2 reviews for Jonathan At Gratz Park
Went to Jonathan's At Gratz Park in May for my brother's graduation from UK. We had my family and my bro's wife's family, about 12 of us. What's crazy is that this was a last minute reservation during one of the busiest weekends in Lexiington (aside from Keeneland and every UK home basketball game, maybe) and we got in with 12 in our party.
The restaurant is in the Gratz Park Hotel which seemed like one of the nicer hotels in Lexington, being located downtown and probably kind of pricey. We started at the bar, which of course had a great selection of bourbons, including the Four Rose's Single Barrel, which I believe has only become available outside KY very recently. I had two before dinner.
As an appetizer, I had some sort of berry-vinagrette salad as an appetizer and regretted it as soon as the four people at the table started losing it over the their salad selection: a grilled caesar-style romaine lettuce salad with roasted black-eyed peas. Not that my salad was not very good - it was. It's just that the other was so astoundingly different from anything I'd ever had. The romaine leaves were grilled whole on, I assume from the nearly meaty flavor, the same grill upon which the steaks are done. I had never had grilled romaine lettuce before, or since. The black-eyed peas seemed roasted and were very hard, but complimented the smoky, grilled flavor of the romaine and the caesar vinagrette so well. I ate half my mom's and felt bad about it. I seriously could not get enough.
Honestly, I remember having some cut of meat as an entree, but the salad stole the show. How often can you say that about a restaurant? Oh yeah, I had the Australian verson of Kobe beef - Wagyu or something? I can't even remember the cut.
Oh, one thing I have to mention. It's one of my personal pet-peeves. On the menu itself, instead of using the term ENTREES or MAIN COURSE, they substitute the word SUPPERS. I just can't stand that word. It's bad enough when people say it instead of DINNER. I realize now it's even worse when printed in capital letters on a menu. But I'm over it.

Can you remember that? YOU BETTER IF YOU COME HERE. Hands down one of the best entrees I have ever eaten in my life! Scallops with Roasted Butternut Squash Weisenberger Mill Grits, Wilted Arugula,
Dried Cranberries and Pepitas.....sounds like a mouthful I know, but it is!! And a wonderfully, amazing mouthful it is too! Totally worth the $30 pricetag, it just bursts with flavors in your mouth with every bite--it was our waiters favorite dish and as corny as the phrase goes, it really was "love at first bite!!!"
My boyfriend was jealous of my dish the whole night, but his was also pretty good....but the waiter convinced him to order a steak special dish instead of the tenderloin he thought he would order, and for the increase in price, Matt didn't think it was all that. My dish was cheaper and still kicked its butt, although the steak itself was cooked very well the side dishes served with it were just normal dishes....nothing too amazing.
Our oyster special appetizer made up for it, and there is a reason these are known as aphrodisiacs--something about eating an oyster just makes you feel fancy and lovey dovey, and they do know how to make oysters here!
It is a small, dark, intimate venue inside of a hotel which usually screams, no don't go here, but the wait staff was great and very attentive and pretty funny and even directed us non-locals to a good bar for after dinner drinks, so all in all, a fine lexington dining experience, and if I find another place that makes a scallop dish that amazing, and with all of those flavors that just seem to work together in a way my tastebuds have never known before, then I would be a happy lady!
