I really really like this place. It's way far and out in the country, but it's nice to get away sometime, especially in the Fall.
When I was there, the orchard was picked over, but I was able to get a bag of apples in the Barn Shop. First and foremost, this place is only getting 5 stars because their bakery and homemade donuts are SCRUMPTIOUS! You have to try them. The line for the bakery was out the door and now I know why! MMMMmmmmmm!
Besides, the apple orchard & bakery, they have a great play area for kids and a corn maze that'll rawk your socks off. Jonamac's is worth the drive.
This place is so cute. I love it. One of my favorite things about fall are places like this that make the fall months so awesome! So while I was going to NIU down the street, my friends & I decided to check out the haunted corn maze. The first time I went, it was really fun because it was like a few of us who went...I mean it wasn't scary or anything...just fun :) Then the following year, we went with like 20 to 30 people (no joke), and it totally sucked because it was just like a huge cluster f*CK while we were walking. Haha. So if you ever go to that maze, don't bring too many people.
The general store is a must see. They have a bunch of apple stuff. Please do yourself a favor and try the dutch apple pie--it is amazing. They also have apple donuts, apple slush, apple dumplings, apples!, and so many other things. I def recommend getting the apple cider...that is my favorite thing to get there. The only con is that things do get a little pricey if you want everything in that little store :)
There is also a pumpkin patch in the back for the little ones and the corn maze also runs in the day for those to afraid to go at night.
So, if your ever out in the cornfields of Dekalb County during the fall, check out Jonamac. It's worth it!
Oh yeah....back to the farmlands. I grew up in nearby De Kalb, and have visited this orchard countless times since they opened up in 1974. They have always had a cute little petting zoo, pumpkin patch, hay & pony rides, and an adorable and fun 'country store'. I have great memories of this place, and love to go back & feel like a kid! Apple picking and sampling of fudge & fresh made donuts, etc. is a sweet treat...you can even borrow a wagon ! Just a fun day & great for kids, and me. The corn-maze is a blast ! The season is coming to a close, so you should visit before there is frost on the pumpkins!
Very nicely laid out spot for Fall festivities and pumpkin picking. Little kids will have fun. Apple dumplings are excellent. Only disappointment was the apple donuts. We tried several; they were flat tasting with little apple flavor. Do they really add cider when they make these? However, this is still a great little spot.
I found this to be one of the cheaper places to take the kids for apple picking. Now that they are older, we don't go, because what I am going to do with all those apples?
One warning, however - the last time we were there they starting charging to access the play area and required an adult to accompany each kid and charged for the adult! I think that's B.S. considering there's nothing for the adults to do in there.
To add to the whole Midwest Fall experience with the leaves changing colors, my family and I drove out to Malta, IL - right next to Dekalb and NIU. This is definitely a family experience from the very beginning.
For the kids, there is the Barn Yard activity area with huge bales of hay, Apple Train (even adults can fit in these cute little apple shaped seats), Apple Launcher, Petting Zoo (they even have a llama and camel, too!), Pony rides, Hay rides, and to top it all off, there is the apple orchard, pumpkin patch and the corn maze, as well.
For the apple orchard, you have to purchase your own bag - personally, purchase a smaller bag and you'll have fun running through the rows of the apple trees trying to find the different types of apples. There are three types of bags - $9.00 for a 1/2 peck (5 lbs), $15.00 for a peck (10 lbs) and $27 for a 1/2 bushel (20 lbs). We were greedy and picked a bushel of apples but now, we're still trying to figure out what else we can make with apples! But if you're there for a deal - inside of their grocery store are fresh hand-picked apples already in bags that are cheaper than the the one that you'll pick by yourself. They also have a bakery section that serves fresh hot apple doughnuts and cider - either hot or slushy form.
Also, inside of the store includes homemade jams, jellies, and apple butter. The bakery also has fresh baked breads, apple pies, hand made caramel apples, and apple pizzas. Overall, a fun family experience and we look back to coming again next year.

Another great one-stop-shop for apples and punkins! The shop isn't as sweet as Curtis Orchard's, but it is a neat little place. There are rows and rows of all sorts of apple varieties, pumpkins and other fruits and vegetables to pick. You can even take a hay ride out to the fields! But don't get lost in the corn maze!
Get your live music fix with the bluegrass bands setting the right soundtrack for the pickin'!
Oh, and get there early if you go on a weekend. There are only so many carts available and many acres to walk if you decide not to wait for the hay rides. My friend Mandy and I got there a little later in the afternoon and had to be creative with our stash (over-stuffed apple bags slung onto and cutting into our arms and huge pumpkins hoisted over our heads). We had to stop and rest a couple of times because you know...we ain't Amazons.

Good place to shop for apple donuts and apples in the fall. It is pretty small but its nice inside. They only have a small selection to shop from; this orchard is more for the kids. I've had better apple donuts but if your in dekalb it's worth stopping by.
