I am SO glad I found Jonah. A good acupuncturist is hard to find in San Francisco. My search is over, and I couldn't be happier. Jonah is an exceptional person, and he knows acupuncture and herbal medicine, not only because he's a genius (of course, Jonah is a genius, but he's also super-humble) but because he loves his art/science.
Jonah is a fearless acupuncturist: he knows his art/science so well that he gets right to the heart of the matter. If you are in pain, be prepared to have your pain addressed. Jonah is right there with you: it's like he feels the pain you feel (intuition?) and therefore knows exactly what to do.
Jonah helped me this week by resolving, in one session, a terrible shooting pain in my belly that had been plaguing me for several days. It arose every time I went to eat something. Jonah said the pain was in the location of my stomach and stuck a needle right into the area. It was a little scary at first but then an incredible sense of calm came over me. I fell asleep, and when I awoke, Jonah was there smiling at me. I knew I'd be able to eat a nice big meal that evening thanks to the fearless genius with the needles.

So I develop this terrible pain in my leg, butt, knee, and foot, that they tell me is sciatica, probably the result of too much weight on the leg press machine at the gym. It's pinched a disk, and the pain is shooting down my backside, funneling at the knee, and making it painful to walk on my foot in the morning. That is, if I sleep all night without waking up with the pain....
I've tried acupuncture before, way back in the 70's, from a Chinese doctor here in the City, together with herbs he sent me home with. It was helpful, so I thought I'd give it a shot in the new millenium, especially since I can't sleep!
So I take me to an acupuncturist someone recommended in East Bay, and she's good. I get immediate relief, but it doesn't last. It's a mild, restful kind of therapy, helpful for a few hours, but gone by the next day.
I decide to look for someone closer to home, here in the City, and go casting about on the internet, coming upon Yelp in the process, and Jonah in particular, since he's got so many 5 star recommendations.
From the very first visit, I get relief, and after a couple of visits, the relief begins to last. Jonah asked me a whole bunch of questions about the pain, where it starts, where it goes, how it lasts. Then he goes right to work and I feel his treatment immediately. "It's unnerving" I tell him, enjoying my little pun while I'm a bit surprised by the force of the work he's doing. Much more powerful than the treatment I got in East Bay. And much more effective, lasting longer each session, until today. I am pain free now, something I never thought would happen given the frequency and intensity of the pain not too long ago. The nerve is no longer inflamed. I don't wake up with pain in the night. I don't get up with it in the morning. True, I still get pain at the site where Jonah treats me occasionally, especially after I have been driving for a while, but it's NOTHING like it was before. NOTHING.
I can't recommend him enough. I like to say that there's BJ and AJ, meaning "before Jonah" and "after Jonah". WOW , what a diference he's made, and continues to make.

I love seeing Jonah for various reasons
1 he's a talented herbalist and has been keeping my immune system primed during cold and flu season
2 the trigger point/neuromuscular needling he does is really effective and i've seen it help a great number of people besides myself.
2 He is a truly dedicated practitioner who listens and delivers sound advice with humor and wisdom
Jonah is smart, intuitive, and knows about pain. Most importantly, he knows how to take the pain away. I came to Jonah with chronic pain in my upper back. He has a technique with the needles that helped release the tension in that area right away. He has a great touch and kind manner. I know that I am in very competent hands with Jonah.

I was having intense sinus pain before seeing Jonah. I've been a total of three or four times now and every time I go it's very worth it. He cleared up my sinus issue right away with the needles and gave me a tincture to try and everything seemed to work great!
The needles can sometimes be painful, but he always hits the right spots and I am usually passed out snoring (and I don't snore) within ten minutes. Oh, and the first time I went he worked a knot out in my shoulder and I felt like a new man after.
If anyone is looking to do acupuncture for the first time, he's your man. Thanks Jonah!
Let me start by saying that I am very new to accupuncture. I will also say that after 3 treatments I haven't felt this good in a very long time. I'm definitely sold on accupuncture. But this is not a review of accupuncture. This is a review for Jonah, a person who is incredlibly gifted and has been such a huge help to me. He is just a pleasure to work with and so warm and friendly. In a world of medicine where we're rushed in and out of doctor's offices, over prescribed, and personal relationships with our doctors are a rarity, it is SO refreshing to meet someone who gets that. He cares about your overall health and takes the time to look at the bigger picture. Very glad to have met him.

I really can't recommend Jonah enough. He's an incredible mix of East meets West. I went in with back pains, and within 2 sessions I was feeling significant progress and relief. I've been to 2 acupuncturists before. The first was pretty miserable, someone rather new. The second was okay, and was helpful. Jonah, however showed me what acupuncture can and should do for someone. Quite honestly I'm not a big fan of having to lie there with needles sticking out of me, but the fantastic results really can't be ignored.
Just so you know, I am a chronic sufferer (12 years) of back pain, with disintegrating lower disks. I've been through my share of physical therapy, chiropractors, osteopaths, and massage therapists. I'm finding that nothing quite gets to the point as Jonah's handiwork.
So between Jonah's pain relief and core strengthening that I am learning from Centered Body Pilates I'm slowing making myself into a new man.

Best back stabber around. Those needles do a world of good! Acupuncture and therapy helping my golf game tremendously! No more pain in my wrists or back. I went to a standard medical doctor and he had me diagnosed and shot up with cortisone in minutes. It's nice to have the issues actually fixed vs having the pain just taken away. He's in the same office with my chiropractor Brian Kerner. These guys are awesome!
No pain, free movement, and feeling of strength again. Thanks Jonah!

Jonah gets a big ol' five-star review. I'm new to acupuncture -- after one treatment and a prescription for supplements, my tummy troubles were in remission for a solid week.
But even better than getting relief from physical symptoms is the fact that Jonah takes an intellectual, eloquent, human, and attentive approach to whatever issues I'm facing on the days I've received treatment -- I've seen lots of doctors for many problems over the years (chronic sinus infections, migraines, broken bones, allergic reactions to tons of medicines -- perhaps I am, shall we say, "delicate"), and Jonah's bedside manner wins above everyone else's (except maybe the ER nurse who gave me four shots of morphine that one time -- but, she was probably just irritated with me rather than numbing my pain out of empathy).

Jonah is great -- I'm new to acupuncture and Jonah made the introduction really positive. After running in the AIDS Marathon, my body was pretty broken up with lots of muscle and joint problems, and Jonah seems to be doing a great job addressing those issues. He really inspires confidence, he's gentle, and his approach feels really intelligent.
I admit, I've got issues with anxiety and stress that are probably a little worse than the average person. I went to Jonah to help with this and I have felt better after 4 acupuncture sessions than I have felt in over a year.
He's very nurturing, thorough and most importantly, he listens to you. For my first session he talked with me for about 40 minutes about my eating/life habits, sleep patterns and my general overall health. I have not met any other medical professional who takes the time to listen and help that Jonah does.
If you are looking for a way, as I was, to "feel better" and have healthier ways of dealing with stress call Jonah.

I had my first visit with Jonah last night... Overall, my impression is that Jonah is an incredibly gifted healer. He not only is very warm and genuine, but he has a technical knowledge of his craft that makes you feel as if you were in a doctor's office.
During my visit I had some accupuncture and then discussed my levels of stress. He did some work on a few 'trouble areas' in my joints with the needles, then discussed my stress, how it may affect my sleep and general productivity, and then the types of changes I could look at making to enhance my health.
I left feeling the tingling lift that acupuncture gives me and full of ideas on how to revitalize my life. I can't reccomend this guy enough, thanks Jonah!

I love Jonah!!! I started seeing him for terrible insomnia when he was still at Schizzandra Health Center (which was 3 blocks from my apartment). He has a very comforting and soothing demeanor - he's just great.
He has now gone off on his own (yay Jonah!) and his new office location is across town in Cow Hollow. It is a testatment to how amazing that Jonah is that I will board the 22 Fillmore on a Saturday morning to get acupuncture treatments. And now I'm sleeping through the night - Thanks Jonah!!!

I walked in to Jonah's office with pretty bad repetitive stress pain. Too much time on the computer had resulted in shooting pain through my wrists, arms, and shoulders. He straight away was able to diagnose the type of repetitive stress I have and rule out carpal tunnel. Then we started therapy. Well, let's just say that my pain is 85% gone after 6 visits over the course of 2 months. Yes, I should say that I switched to all of the fancy, expensive ergonomic computer gadgets during this time, but Jonah really is a miracle worker. In addition to the acupuncture and massage, he also taught me how to carry my computer bag, taught me exercises and stretches to do, and reminded me to be mindful of my body and posture.
Okay- to the treatment. Well, it isn't something I really look forward to. It is very intense, deep tissue acupuncture - at least in my case. I am usually sore for a few days after the sessions, but then feel better and I really do feel that there is long term healing going on. I work a lot and depend on my computer- basically without it I am toast. He has helped me tremendously for computer repetitive stress and I highly recommend his therapy.

not only is he zen and awesome, he seems like a very sweet and caring, cool guy to boot. i followed him from schizandra (in the castro) to his new solo practice over in cow hollow.
the first time i went in there it was my first time being poked, and i was scared. but jonah is really gentle and he warns you when something might hurt (which it usually doesnt) if you have an injury he might rub medicinal juice on you. he stocks some pretty rad tincures for sleep, tranquility, etc, and also some supplements that might just make your day. he gives me some kind of tidbid of wisdom pretty much everytime i'm there.
i've gone to see him for things like a pulled muscle, anxiety, and once for a really terrible hangover. he always sets me right!
Jonah's knowledge and personalized treatment has helped me to greatly reduce the unending pain associated with my wrist/arm/shoulder due to daily computer use. After previously seeing my doctor and a physical therapist for several weeks, these symptoms persisted. Then a friend recommended that I try acupuncture. I have now been seeing Jonah for about a month and we are steadily working to prevent the pain instead of just temporarily easing it.

I recently went to Jonah Hershowitz for a consultation and acupuncture session and I left feeling amazing! We spent the first 20 minutes or so discussing my body, my pains, my sleep patterns..everything about myself!
Having never had a session like this, I was thrilled to learn about my body. Jonah created a comfortable environment that allowed me to really share with him.
The actual acupuncture was relaxing and painless. I left feeling lifted and refreshed. I was advised to get a few herbs to calm my busy mind in the evening and since then have felt truly relaxed and calm.

I have received acupuncture from a lot of older Korean and Chinese gentlemen. I usually get it when I have a trauma of some sort because it works.
I did something bad to my neck Monday, and went to Jonah. He is incredible! It's not just about the needles, he gave me so much to loosen up the muscles and to prepare my body for the release that I needed.
He even did cupping which I have never received before and it was very powerful and intense, my body responded right away. This man knows what he's doing. I trust him more than a Western MD in his approach and in depth knowledge of the body.
You will get the best treatment possible if you go to Jonah.

Jonah is superb! He's a very professional, knowledgeable and genuine person. HIs approach to any ailment or illness is from a very thorough, diagnostic place -- helping me really feel that I'm being fully treated. I've loved my treatments that have ranged from deep massage to intensely relaxing rest. i have been seeing jonah for about a year. Jonah has helped me stop taking Rx for anxiety, depression. I enjoy meeting with him and he always has some kind, honest advice. I take herbs for constipation, i go to jonah for strained muscles, sinus trouble, etc. i push my body with marathon and cycle training, acupuncture helps me breathe out the tension and relax. my visits with jonah help me to slow my emotions down so i am more conscious rather than reactionary. i feel like it is a holistic way to take care of myself and a more valuable personal learning experience than taking Rx drugs that just cover my process and impede getting to know myself better. thanks jonah

I have seen many Acupuncturists over the years and I have to say that Jonah is the best. He takes the time to perform a thorough evaluation and his ability to find the acupuncture points is exceptional. After my recent visit, I felt increased energy and balance. As a Doctor of Chiropractic, I have the opportunity to refer my patients to Jonah as well. They are always thankful for my referral. I have repetitive stress syndrome, a product of too much typing and computer time, sadly. It had been getting steadily worse for over a year, and by the time I finally went to Jonah I was in constant pain. Jonah has done amazing, remarkable work for me. Only one month after starting acupuncture with him, I had gone from constant pain to an occasional twinge. He's professional, smart, kind, reassuring -- and effective.

Jonah has the best of both healing worlds: very intuitive hands and a great deal of training and intellectual understanding of pain syndromes. We worked together and after every trade, I said the same thing, "I need to get more work from you."
He has many tools for evaluating and treating musculo-skeletal pain as well as being a great listener for problems such as anxiety, depression, and stress.
