Having grown up in El Cajon, I'm not exactly sure how I never made it to Jolt'n Joes before this week. I went with a large group of people for Monday night football and we did it VIP style! Well, as VIP as it gets in La Mesa;  my friends were camped out in the living room style area on the second floor, the homey atmosphere definitely added to the MNF experience. I think my favorite part was the 20 second time delay between our television and the televisions in the rest of the bar. You could, literally, watch every play twice... and the novelty of hearing the cheers (or boos, which I guess would be more applicable) 20 seconds after eventually lost its novelty and become annoying.

I think our waitress would rather have  slit her wrists then been there. I was there for at least 45 minutes before she appeared.

So why am I awarding 3 stars? Because it looked like a lot of fun could be had. It was freakin' huge and they had more pool tables and dart boards than I had ever seen in one place.

I've had many a drunken night at Jolt'n Joe's. MANY. We've celebrated birthdays full of debochary and fun. The girl bartenders and cocktail waitresses are hot and loads of fun if you encourage them to be. The joint itself is large, has plenty of pool tables upstairs and down stairs and a number of other bar games like shuffle board, ping pong, darts and that fun punch the bag game. Large patio for the smokers. They actually have some decent food here.

Problems with this place is that it tends to be a typical E-County bar. On weekends you will find your fair share of bro's and ho's. Fights are inevitable.

Overall, good place to go with a good size group of people, plenty of room, some cute eye candy and cheap drinks...

I'm not sure about this place. The prices are decent and the pool tables are tip top. I was just weird to see a place this big only have like 8 people in it. If I'm not playing one of their many bar games like pool shuffleboard or ping pong I find my eyes and mind wandering to where I don't know. There is nobody else here and I just feel like a weirdo. Anyway, I'm gonna give it another shot another day but for now...I've seen better

I use to come here a lot to play some pool, chill with friends when they come into town, and have some beers. They price of pool is the cheapest anywhere I've been. Beer is cheap and on tap.

This place is like a large dive bar with tons of pool tables.

Just like the star rating says:  A-OK.

The food isn't too bad, but it's standard bar fare.  The beer selection is standard bar fare.  The decor is great.  The atmosphere is standard bar fare.

We went on a Thursday with only 3 other people eating there and it was sad the amount of service we got.

Better than Taste & Thirst, but only on the merits of the Chicken Quesadilla.

Joltn Joes is a pretty cool laid back bar.  They have shuffle board, pool tables, darts, etc. It's a good atmosphere for a bunch of friends to hang out as they have a lot of space.  The drinks are ok - I order the same thing and everytime I go it's a different color so that is kinda strange.  BUT - they let ANYONE into this bar.  Everytime I have gone, we have spent more time talking and laughing at the sluts in the place.  And we are talking about SLUTS.  I have never seen so many girls in mini shirts with their legs spread open.  Gives the place a bad rep!  They need to have a dress code of some sort as it makes the place look trashy.

I thought the downtown location was pretty much of a train wreck (http://www.yelp.com/us...), but I've been working lots in La Mesa this month, and decided to check out their La Mesa location, in hopes that it was better than their downtown turd. Turns out, the La Mesa location is just a much larger turd.

Layout is 90% games: 6 electronic dart boards, two ping pong tables, shuffleboard, and a variety of arcade games downstairs. Lots of big (and outdated) projection screens for sports, and an upstairs full of pool tables. That's the good news.

The rest of the place (decor, furnishings, menu, food quality, and service) is just ridiculously bad. The place is generally in disrepair, poorly lit, and the paint appears to be more of a graffiti cover up than any attempt to make the place comfortable. Bar stools in the bar area are falling apart. Menus written in a 6 point font, in the form of those free point of sale table tents (that distributors make for free.) Bartender had no personality to go with her short-shorts and undersized football jersey.

Note, there's an office window on the second floor that looks straight down on the bar, and the entire time we were there for lunch, the staff was being observed through the blinds by what I can only imagine is a very depressed owner. At one point, our bartender took a seat on a barstool behind the bar, and took a sip of a soda. The shadowy figure wagged a finger, and she begrudgingly set the soda down, and began pacing behind the bar like a caged animal.

With a culinary school a stone's throw away, and reviews asserting that culinary students frequent the place, it's a wonder that the food is so craptacular.

Sad to see a place with this much square footage, in a community that's clearly dying for a quality watering hole, operated by folks that are either not making enough money to keep the place up, or are too busy torturing employees from above to notice that they are on a crash course.

Perks: -I can walk here.

Negs: -I went here with friends when I was doing a dry month and found they don't have any non-alcoholic beer (gross, but hey, give me some credit).
- Apparently people literally got tossed out the door here frequently.
- Not much of a scene.

In the ghett-ooooo!

This place has more east county rednecks than a monster truck show. That's not necessarily a bad thing though, I mean, they need somewhere to hang out too, right? What better place than Jolt n' Joes, La Mesa to knock back a few while curling the bill of your cap up. The drinks are moderately priced for the grade of venue, it's kinda dingy and dirty. Balls firmly in hand I went upstairs to find that there were people already using the table I was allocated, so I chose a different table and a semi decent cue. Many rounds of 9 ball ensued, and many heinekens were consumed.

Not a bad experience at all, just not really worth the drive out there for the money, there's nicer places to go with better tables for the same price. I was diggin the gangster rap though!

I stopped by here during Comicon weekend for lunch because it was one of the less crowded places in the Gaslamp District at the time.  And after my experience there, I could see why.  The place itself is really large, and has multiple entrances so when we walked in, no one greeted us, so we really didn't know where to go.  After walking through the dining area, and still not being greeted, we decided to sit ourselves. It took a good 5 minutes before anyone even recognized the fact that we were sitting there with no menus and no food.  It wasn't like the place was jam packed or anything.  Strike 1

So as we got seated and the waitress finally got to our table, we decided to order just in case we didn't get to see her again.  I guess to put it constructively, the food was uninspiring. I had the chicken wrap, and a beer.  The beer was awesome (as Fat Tire always is), but the wrap was something that i could've gotten at a supermarket deli, and for less!  It was bland, and overly simple.  I wasn't expecting a gourmet dish or anything, but come on, put some flavor into it please. Strike 2

After we finished our food, we wanted to get going back to the convention center, but not only did it take forever for our waitress to come near our table, it took a few tries just to even get her attention to get the check! The whole place just seemed like it didn't know what it was doing. I don't ask for much when i dine for lunch, but i at least expect some cohesion among the staff.  Well, that was Strike 3 and this place struck out with me......

It works. Me and some buds frequent this place to shoot some pool once in a while. I don't give a crap about decor and furnishings, as long as we can play some pool.

However, they serve their overpriced 16oz beers in plastic cups. Nothing sets off a Guinness or Fat Tire like a plastic cup....not.

If you're looking for five star, go somewhere else.

if you want to b.s. with your boys/girls and relax, it'll do just fine.

As a student at San Diego Culinary Institute, Jolt'n Joe's patio has become a staple for lunch breaks and after school beer drinking sessions.  SDCI is literally across the parking lot (or in my class' case) and right next door to Jolt'n Joe's.  More often than not, come 5 PM or 5:30 PM, you'll see culinary students clad in their white chef coats and black and white striped trousers sitting on the patio with a couple of pitchers of beer and cigarettes hanging around, decompressing after a day of cooking and running around the kitchen.  They have $3 well drinks, and plenty of beers on tap (Beach Bum, Blue Moon, Newcastle, Fat Tire).  Inside there's a digital jukebox, ping-pong table, video games, and a floor full of pool tables downstairs, as well as tons of TVs to catch up on your sports and news.  The only drawback is the random local yokels who come to play pool or get wasted, because you kind of feel like you might've stepped back into time to Dukes of Hazzard, but I guess that comes with the territory (being La Mesa).  Too bad beer's not included in my tuition!!

Jolt'n Joe's is the diamond in the rough of La Mesa. And it is some rough shit. This place has goddamn everything. Pool tables, dart boards, that basketball game that has the moving backboard, shuffleboard, video games, bar-video games, and ping-pong. That's right, ping-pong. They also have huge TV's everywhere and serve food. The food is shit, but after a few of their four dollar pitchers it doesn't really matter. Man this place is actually pretty bad ass. One of the downfalls, however, is The Bartender of The Year that works there. He is a big oaf that pours weak drinks and cards you for pretty much every drink you order. When he is not there, though, anything goes. I have gotten away with some serious shit there; dancing on the bar, wrestling on pool tables, pretty much being an asshole. That, however, was the result of drinking Jeremiah Reds at BJ's before I showed up at J'n J's. It was the Wednesday Combo, oh yeah.

i would totally disagree with the other reviewer:  the drinks are crap, and overpriced!  the bartenders are bitchy and ignore girls to flirt with their male customers.  i have been here several times for birthdays and stuff... but would never pick this place myself.
