Review from Josh S.

Love these beers. Probably my favorite is Bam Noire, but really they are all excellent. I used to come here to pick up cases before they were distributing more widely. Now they have a brew pub in downtown Ann Arbor.
They started out with mostly belgian style ales, but they have expanded. And now they are perhaps the best crafted beers in Michigan (which says a lot when you have Bell's, Founder's, Leopold Bros, AA Brewing Co, etc).
These days it's much easier to find these beers locally at grocery store, so I'm not sure if they still selling out of their back door. -

My sister carries the Calabaza Blanca in her wine shop in Sisters, OR. So during our visit to Michigan for the holiday, we ended up talking them into letting us join another tour that was going on this past Monday (i.e., not a typical day they are open to the public - please check their website for information on hours). The owner and his wife were great - tons of information, and very friendly and inviting. The place looks totally different on the outside now... well, they are putting bricks on the outside of the building as I type... so if you decide to head over there... just ask around - people will help you out.
The tour was great... but make sure that you understand that you are going to be trying beers that are of the sour type. They are ALL barrel aged, which is where some wild yeasts hang out and give the beer another round of fermentation. They also add more yeast for bottle fermentation (so the longer it's in the bottle, the more sour taste you will get) If you have tried a farmhouse beer, then you have experienced something similar.
That being said, the beers are very well made. And it is totally worth checking it out, if only to see what barrel aged beer is all about. Completely worth a visit... but be sure to bring a checkbook or cash! Cheers, and enjoy! -

My husband and I stopped here back in July 2007. Jolly Pumpkin doesn't have a brewpub or a tasting room at this time. However, they are open to the public during certain hours on Fridays for tastings and sales. We met the brewer's wife, who was very nice and personable. Obviously knowledgeable about the beer as well. We got to sample each of the available beers. We also decided to stock up on some bottles of their beer, since it's not always easy to find in Chicago. The prices for the beer were extremely reasonable. Oh, I almost left out an important piece of information. Most of the beers are very good, and they also have a tendency to be unique enough that they don't necessarily fall into any certain category of beer. However, most of the beers are in the belgian style.
