The chicken fried steak is top notch. The whipped potatoes are a good too, if you like skins in your potatoes.

We've eaten at the dixie probably six times a year for the eight years we've lived in the area.

The service has varied from totally disconnected and distracted to stellar.

We've had breakfast, lunch in house and lunch and dinner take out. We highly recommend the take out. On Sundays there is a quick to order luncheon special, my personal favorite is the cornbread dressing with turkey. Included in the Sunday special is dessert, usually peach cobbler and banana pudding. Not to impressed with the desserts but for the complete meal price not a biggy.

Some menu faves are: chicken fried steak, chicken tenders, hamburger steak and turkey and dressing.

If you're appetizer junkies like us, try the fried mushrooms, hand battered large and juicy, worth stopping in for.

Have eaten here about 40 times over the last 5 years, always with a group as this was their favorite regular meeting place.   We always reserved the tables in the back so the 10-20 of us could all sit together.     They are good at dealing with groups and expected us almost every other weekend.

Service has always been acceptable overall, considering how many different types of things we ordered with so many changes.   It young local kids working there.   I have no idea how they got all of our orders correct as they did so many times.

I've tried almost everything on the menu and have never been let down with the quality.  As mentioned by others, the chicken fried steak is about Texas perfection.    It's authentic here and done just right.

This was really hard for me to decide on a rating between 3-4 stars.   And the reason I have decided on a 3 star is that technically I am not in the "I'm a fan" category, as someone else in our group always selected this place.    While the service was good 95% of the time, a few times it was poor as when they were too busy and gave away our reserved seats, and a few times the employees have acted very overworked, which if that is something that can be detected by the customer, is simply poor management.

For chicken fried steak in Hearne, this is 4 star as I am a fan of their steaks, meat and chicken.

This is family friendly, tea has always been fresh and if you ever need anything like extra lemons or have any special requests, they will get it out right, and fast.     Cool place for certain.    Someone on vacation in Texas from New York City would likely give this place a 5 star after gorging on one of the chicken fried steaks.    Price is not bad either.

If you are looking for authentic, Texas Chicken Fried Steak then this is the place to be.

I was there on Tuesday night, which happens to be the Chicken Fried Steak (or Chicken) special. For a mere $6.99 you get a large, perfectly battered and fried, chicken fried steak (or chicken), and 2 sides. The sides choices are what you'd expect from a greasy spoon type dive... Canned green beans, mashed "taters", fries, fried okra, cooked carrots, etc. For just $1 more you can add a salad with your choice of dressings (but don't get crazy!).

The meal starts off with a basket of fresh baked bread. They have yeast rolls and sweet cornbread muffins served with whipped butter. HEAVEN! But, its important to not make a glutton of yourself!

I ordered a salad with ranch dressing. It wasn't bad... Lettuce a couple of carrots and a slice of tomato. Over the years, their salad has improved and contains more than just iceberg lettuce. Again... This is not the reason to come here!

The ONLY thing I have ever ordered here is their Chicken Fried Steak. Again, as always, it was perfect... What I grade all other Chicken Fried Steaks against. It wasn't too greasy and didn't have too much extra "batter" hanging on to the edges. It was tender enough to cut with just my fork. The gravy is white, peppered gravy... What my Daddy calls "40 weight gravy" and wasn't too thick or too watery. As my sides, I chose the fried okra and the green beans. The okra was a little greasy and the green beans were from a can... but lets face it... I don't come here for the veggies either!!

Overall, I love the Dixie Cafe! It's certainly not fine dining, but if you want a big ol' Chicken Fried Steak... There isn't a better place (that I have found anyway!).

Oh, one other thing, if you are easily offended, I should warn you... There are several Confederate Flags and pictures of civil War heroes on the walls. It's part of the kitsch of the establishment! It's truly all in good fun! I mean, really, the name of the place is the Dixie Cafe!!!

Overall, pretty good place.

I found the chicken fried steak to be just what the doctor ordered - crispy outside, savory meat inside. Excellent sides, just like my grandma used to make.

The biggest positive is the atmosphere, it feels like you are in a little country restaurant because you are. That's also the biggest negative.

I don't get off on telling other people what to do with their lives, but for goodness' sakes, some of the patrons walking in here are wearing wife beaters, some of them wearing no shoes when I was there (NOT KIDDING). Now, this was about a month and a half ago, so maybe it's changed. Maybe.

It's a good place, but kick out the fools and have a better place. The food is worth coming for!

If you're looking for excellent comfort food options, and you happen to be in the Hearne, TX area, look no further.  Johnny Reb's has everything from meatloaf to chicken fried steak, burgers, and fried seafood.  Don't come here for heart-healthy fare, although I guess you could get a salad, but you'd miss out on what's best here.  The restaurant itself is pretty cool, with lots of Civil War memorabilia on the walls.  The restaurant has an interesting mix of locals and visitors to the College Station area.  I will go so far to say that Johnny Reb's may have the best home cookin' in TX.  Get a t-shirt while you're there.
