Review Highlights
Johnny Mack's has a really nice neighborhood feel. The menu is wide-ranging and seems to have something for everyone. I ordered a roasted chicken special and was very pleased. The chicken with gorgonzola seemed a little too creamy, but the burger looked great and my friend enjoyed it.
A good place if you're going with a good-sized group and looking for a casual place to relax.
I could be confused (I don't think I am, but one never knows), but it seems as though the Johnny Mack's Belgian White Ale on tap is $4 at all times. Right? Yes. Your reason to stop by. You're welcome.
But if you need more reasons (picky bastards!), I'd suggest the fries, spinach and artichoke dip and the Simpsons pinball machine.
Oh, you want more? GUINNESS FLOAT. Thanks, I'll be here all week.
I'm pretty damn sure I know how to cook a burger. It's an astonishingly simple technique; you learn once and never forget...you poke it with your middle finger and take it off the grill or plancha, when it's done. So when I walked into Johnny Mack's, I figured I'd get a decent burger to settle my stomach after taking down that egg yolk soda from Hanco's. My friend and I stood around for a while, got tired of waiting to be seated and seated ourselves.
Me: Can I get a burger with cheddar and bacon; medium-rare?
Waitress: Burger, cheddar and bacon, medium-rare?
Me: Yeah.
Approximately 5 minutes later my burger came out...sans bun-top, and a minute later when I asked for and then received my bun-top I took a bite; and a funny thing happened...no juice (like the juice that would normally run out of a medium-rare burger?) came out. I stared quizzically at the greyish-brown meat and took another small bite, then I cut it in half. My medium-rare burger had been hammered to a tasteless well done...as in ZERO pink.
I notified our waitress, who asked me, "it's not cooked medium-rare, really?" No, it was not medium-rare.
I sent it back and waited for the arrival of my medium-rare burger. My new burger arrived with a nice char on the outside and I took a bite. I was met with cold red flesh, which my friend, upon seeing it, asked me "how's your bacteria burger?" Now, far be it from me to cast dispersions towards their kitchen, but I'm pretty sure that the only way you get char on a raw burger is by throwing it in the salamander...not cool. Here's a thought: cook my burger right the first time, and then you won't have to cut corners and send me raw meat wrapped in char.
They get an extra star because the waitress was nice and didn't try to push some kind of seasonal Six Points nonsense on me.
Just heard Johnnys is opening a second location at the old Elementi site on 7th between Carroll and Garfield. Woo Hoo!!
Great place but service is a little slow. Will go again.
Johnny Mack's is good for burgers and bar food. The atmosphere is okay and the patio is nice.
The service is a little lacking, but it has a nice neighborhood feel to it.
The burgers are great, wonderfully seasoned with skinny fries, but I ordered mine medium and it was definitely overcooked. Also, it's a little pricey for the food they're serving. A friend and I had two beers each and two burgers and it was $50. I almost regretted not just going to Five Guys.
I went to Johnny Mack's with a few friends, and we sat at the bar. We all ordered the pumpkin spice ale, and didn't get any food. Does that make this review pretty narrow? Yes, but I had to rave about the ale. It's their own ale, and they rim the glass with cinnamon sugar. My drink tasted less like beer and more like a delicious, autumn dessert in liquid form. Am I exaggerating? Yes, but only a little. The bartender was friendly and attentive, and the drinks? $4 a pint, at 9PM at night. Can't beat that, and I'm now on a mission to get ALL my drinks lined with a cinnamon rim. Well, maybe not all of them.
Okay, so sometimes the service is less-than-stellar. And they often run out of the one special you were looking forward to. And sometimes there are very strange mafia families dining next to you. (hmmm... that might have just been the one time) This place has amazing wings. Delicious, please-don't-make-me-stop-eating wings.
Go there. Settle in. Order the wings. Actually, make that two orders.
Oh yeah, and there's a pinball machine.
Weekday early evenings during the school year this is a local spot for PS 107 students and their families (the school is 2 blocks away). The staff is used to and more than tolerant of kids, which is great if you have them. My older son loves the Simpson's pinball machine. I'm a fan of their fries. Food is good solid basic fare. I just wish that they had a brunch menu on the weekends. Instead they have their basic lunch menu and the only thing "brunchy" on that menu is a tiny omelet. Come on, you guys could triple your Sat & Sun. crowd since there aren't many restaurants on 8th Ave.
I've never had a bad experience at Johnny Mack's...the food is always on point. My latest addiction is the chicken club sandwich...the chicken is juicy and the bacon crispy. O yeah...the buffalo wings are perfect...great spicy, and sauce...you gotta lick your fingers after eating one, and it's perfectly acceptable...everyone is doing it.
I like this place, I tend to sit in the bar area. The bartender is always personable and attentive. When I have sat at tables the wait-staff has been too. The food is definitely standard American fare, but it is executed fairly well. The beer is cold the food cooked properly and the staff friendly for what more can you ask?
Got take out burgers. Solid. No nonsense bun, the key to a good burger. Shoestring fries are also key. Friendly people as well.
The burgers are great and fries here are excellent (thin-cut, shoestring-style), the service is usually very good and they have a nice selection of beers on draught. I haven't had their wings, but friends I was with raved about them.
The prices are also pretty good for Park Slope and the atmosphere is vibrant and provides a nice variety of patrons (from young to old). There is also a lot of space here so you generally don't have to wait long for a table, even on weekends. Available outdoor seating overlooking Eighth Avenue is a nice touch in good weather.
I'm giving this 4 stars because they have AWESOME chicken wings. Great burgers and frieds -- but the beer selection leaves a bit to be desired.
This is a great little neighborhood spot. The french fries are those awesome tiny little ones with the skins on them. That was enough to sell me on coming back. Nothing spectacular, but if you're in the mood for a burger (or the chicken club is also delicious) you won't lose here.
This winter, Johnny Mack's put a heavy velour curtain just inside the front door. The place is still lousy with kids, but at least my butt isn't frozen anymore.

The burger is much better then the crowd, although it would be awfully hard for this not to be true.
This is my fav place for burgers in the slope. The fries are extremely tasty, although a little less crisp than I would like.
Being one of the closest bars/restaurants to home, I come here. The food is quite, you know, meh. Fine. Whatever. The atmosphere is very typical Irish bar/restaurant. We made them make us Irish Car Bombs on St. Patty's day, which were awesome, but way overpriced, methinks. Small bar pool table, wait staff is alright.
They have the self-proclaimed "best burger in Brooklyn." While one of my friend agrees with this, my other friend refers to pretty much everything on the menu as "fine." I more agree with the "fine."
The place is really big with open air seating and outdoor seating too. Menu was classic American food and very reasonable. All of us enjoyed our meals: pulled pork, burger, spinach salad and turkey/ brie wrap. (Well, turkey wrap was a little dry, but the fries were good!) Service was very friendly, but made a lot of apologies for little mistakes. I would go back.
I would give them three and a half stars for being a nice neighborhood bar. I find the food to be good, wings are so-so and they do not have the best burger in Brooklyn. But it is a great place to linger awhile over a beer and talk to your neighbors. Good bartenders too-no waiting for your drinks while he converses with his tatted up friend at the other end of the bar.
I've been there on a few occasions and have not been disappointed. Their beers are deliciously cold (which for some reason is important since the last few places I have been to have been lukewarm). I've had their burger, absolutely amazing, they know the meaning of medium-well and they serve their sandwiches with AMAZING french fries. Nice and crispy, thin enough to be fully cooked and not too "potatoey", but delicious dipped in ketchup!! I just had their pulled pork sandwich two weeks ago, and it was absolutely RIDICULOUS! I am a huge pulled pork sandwich girl, and theirs is CRAZY. SO GOOD! I highly recommend going in there and just having it, you will thank me!! Their pulled pork, not too saucy, is served with onions inside a roll, HEAVEN!!!
I would definitely go here for a beer and sit outside on a summer day. Had dinner there and the special fish sandwich was really fishy...I gave it the benefit of the doubt and assumed it was just the flavor of the catfish. The special french onion soup was really really salty. The fries were really salty but that was probably the Old Bay which I love.
I've mostly had burgers here and they're really good. I also had one other meal (goat cheese stuffed chicken breast) which was really good. I'm not a big fan of skinny fries though... and fries are half the enjoyment of getting a burger.
Half pub, half restaurant, Johnny Mack's has great burgers and beer on tap. I love the chicken fingers and the restaurant comes up with some interesting specials from time to time. This is not fine dining by any means, but the outdoor seating is perfect on a steamy Brooklyn evening, and there's a pool table in the back that's almost always in use. Lots of local character!
