I made my first visit to Johnnie's earlier tonight, on a coin toss decision between the aforementioned purveyors of pastrami and Tito's Tacos.  I had the house special pastrami on roll.  Pastrami was fatty and delicious, served to table in a veritable instant.  High praise for the rolls that they serve, it holds up to the grease of the pastrami.  Onion rings followed the sandwich, golden brown, small, sweet, with a cracker meal batter (these are old school rings, hard to find these days).  I dined al fresco, on their patio next to the fire pit.  The astro-turf, malibu lighting, and fire pit fused together with the pastrami and rings and I was caught in a Tarrantinoesque scene that you can only find in one of LA classic eateries like Johnnie's.   If you are a Pastrami lover, you know who you are, try Johnnies for yourself.  I think you will like it.

I've lived near c.c. pretty much my whole life and I have only been to Johnnie's a handful of times. They have not changed a thing for decades and the pastrami sandwich is pretty much the staple here. Order it with pickles and mustard and it's stuffed on top of a nice soft French roll. It's heavy, greasy, fatty, and tasty. They serve crinkle fries (you know the ones your mom used to bake in the oven for you on school nights) which are not my favorite so usually just get the pastrami.

They have al fresco dining with patio heaters and a nice fire pit which is turned on during the cooler nights. This makes for somewhat of a nice ambiance versus the counter style dining and cramped booths that are inside.

They have good service and the food comes fast and hot!!!

It's also open late which is a plus in my book.

PASTRAMI LOVERS HEAVEN!!!

I love this place for the pastrami.  I agree with whoever said "screw the Hat."  I've tried to like the Hat.  Johnnie's is just better.  I've been coming over here for the past 10 years.  I've driven 50 miles out of my way a few times to get here.

My typical order is the pastrami sandwich with double swiss.  I add a little mustard, and good to go.  Fries of course are great on the side.  I love the chili cheese fries.

This place does hot pastrami with a French roll, dipped in the juices beforehand.  I love this type of pastrami sandwich.  I can't stand the jewish deli thing, where they stuff cold pastrami piled high in between rye.  Ugh.

While you wait, they serve pickles which are pretty damn good too.

I love this place.  I've introduced a lot of my friends to Johnnie's as well.  For the most part people agreed with my opinion.  I've had a few friends who thought, eh, it's good but couldn't understand why I completely just loved it.

So to each their own.  I think you'll like it.  I do admit, the recent price hikes... it's making Johnnie's pastrami pretty costly.  But everytime I go it's packed.  Bottom line is people are still paying!

Soy lovers beware!  This place has great pastrami.  It's not the best I've ever had but they are consistently delicious!  The sandwich is big, but not ridiculously big.  It's served plain and simple: lightly toasted bun, heaps of pastrami, and your choice of condiments and toppings.  Personally, I like it with regular mustard and a side of sliced pickles... their pickles are thick, crunchy, juicy, and always fresh.  The Texas fries are always soft and warm and compliment the sandwich quite well.

3.75- I LOVE CHILLI FRIES

Came here last weekend with my sister and wife.  Lately I've been craving junk food, and my sister said she knew a good place to grab a chilli dog and fries.  She wasn't kidding.

As we were walking in, we saw that they had two sections for outdoor seating.  Both sections had a mini bonfire in the middle which was pretty cool, though considering it was 75 out, really not that necessary.

Ambience- definitely had the feel of a little diner.  If it wasn't for the outdoor seating, they'd only have enough seats for about 20-30 people at most.

Menu- pretty simple.  Burgers, hot dogs and sandwiches and the like.  My sister and I both rocked some chilli dogs, while my wife got a pastrami sandwich.  It would've been a shame not to get the item for which they are famous.  We also ordered a plate of chilli cheese fries for the table.  We were told one plate should do the trick.  Sandwich was about $11, hot dogs, about $6.  A $6 chilli dog?  Better be good.

Service- Our server was an older lady, very friendly and attentive.

Food- What does a $6 chilli dog look like?  It looks like 4 or 5 "regular" chilli dogs combined together.  The thing was pretty freaking huge.  This was only the second time in my life that I have had to eat a chilli dog with a fork and knife.  Chilli cheese fries used shredded cheese, which was nice.  At one point, I think my sinuses were clogged with chilli and cheese.  Very tasty overall.  Even managed to steal a few bites of my wife's sandwich.  Delicious, even if it had swiss cheese on it.  Oh yeah, when you sit down, they hook you up with some pickles.  Those certainly help appease your appetite until your food comes around.

Overall- this is a great little joint to grab a bite to eat.  Nothing fancy, just good food at good prices.  If I were visiting LA, would this be in my "must do" list?  Probably not, but if you're local, or staying a while, check this place out when your'e craving "less healthy" food.

This place is heavenly and devilish all at the same time!

Friday night and we wanted to go out to dinner, but didn't feel like putting up with a scene or waiting for a table. Hubby suggested Johnnie's ... as he does often ever since having added it to his lunch spot rotation. I'd never been and have said no to dinner there at least half a dozen times. He'd suggest and I'd veto on the grounds that you don't go out for sandwiches for dinner. Make no mistake ... these sandwiches are meals!

The fire pit and outdoor seating were just what I was looking for ... totally relaxing. The service was kind, attentive, and prompt. The food was delish! We opted for the Pastrami with cheese and a basket of fries.

Thank God my husband knew that the portions were HUGE and recommended sharing the sandwich and fries. Between the two of us, there was still a 1/2 basket of fries left when we were done. At $20 for the meal, splitting it was the way to go. It was a great meal and the price was totally do-able for a casual meal for two. Now, had we not known to spit the order, I would have been right on with the folks who complained that it was too expensive. Forty bucks for a sandwich meal for two people would have been a little crazy.

Now for the devilish part ... please, guys and girls ... no matter how good it tastes ... do not scarf or womfph down these sandwiches. This is a public service announcement. You must chew the meat and doughy carbs very, very well. If you don't, the tasty meal that you just enjoyed will make you absolutely miserable within 30 minutes after eating. You will be a bloated fool, cursing Johnnie and the Pastrami he rode in on.

What have we learned ... it's good, sandwiches can be dinner, split an order, and chew well. Enjoy!

I love this place!  I was visiting Ca from Tx and had to come here.  It was worth travelling for.  Okay, maybe I visited Ca for more than the pastrami sandwiches, but it was still a highlight of my trip.
The pastrami sandwich is perfectly yummy and absolutely huge.  I didn't even finish half of my sandwich.  I don't remember the last time I had such a great pastrami sandwich.  They give you pickles too which were delightful.  They sell them to take home too if you are interested.
The fries were only ok.  The onion rings were pretty good.
One warning: they accept cash only.  They do have an ATM there, but you might as well bring cash with you.

I'll add my review to this large list.  We drove to Culver City from Orange County just to try the pastrami.  My wife was introduced to this place many years ago when she lived in the Culver City / Venice / Mar Vista area.  It was apparantly good then.

We found that it's still good.  And they were huge.  My wife and daughter shared one sandwich - I pigged out on an entire sandwich. I would guess that it wasn't particularly healthy and put me one step closer to a medical trauma.

We order fries and onion rings.  They were OK.  The special treat was the serving of kosher pickles.  I haven't had such tasty pickles since ... probably the last time we were here (7 years ago).

It seems I do this often, but I walked out stuffed.

Stopped off here on my way to LAX after a weekend spent stuffing my face at various places across L.A.

My friend and I split a pastrami sandwich and order of onion rings.  The sandwich was freaking huge and stuffed full of luscious, fatty pastrami.  Your arteries will hate you for the full frontal attack on their well being, but it was tender and delicious.  Onion rings were bomb too.

In a way, I am sort of glad we don't have this in SF.  I could definitely see myself eating here everytime I go out drinking.  That wouldn't be so good on the wallet and REALLY not good on the waistline.

It's hard to find good pastrami or corned beef when you aren't in a deli, but Johnnie's is the next best thing.  Excellent sandwiches and a great late night stop.  What more do you need?

Based on taste, the food was really good.  The pastrami was tasty with a heaping portion of meat.  The onion rings were divine. Maybe 2nd to Sonics.

However, the price is pretty ridiculous.  $11 for a pastrami sandwich with cheese.  That's the cost for JUST the sandwich.  $2 for a soda, which I was afraid to finish for fear of no free refills.  We split an order of onion rings.  Our total came up to $34.

PARKING:  All prices aside, I'd probably go back for an order of onion rings since they had a private lot in the back with a security guard roaming the parking lot.

Plenty of outdoor seating as well as counter service.  The patio we were in had a pretty sweet fire pit with lava rocks, which would probably be nice in the fall when you want to enjoy a root beer float and a sandwich.

All in all, I'd go back for some onion rings to go, but I would never make this place my weekly food stop.

It's really amazing how people who know nothing about LA, truly KNOW NOTHING ABOUT LA!

If you took to former morons such as myself, full of himself with seven years tenure in wonderful San Francisco, you'd LA is nothing but a pretentious place full of only thumping and trendy clubs and expensive restaurants.  These places exist obviously, but there are so many East Coastish hole in the wall places in LA that I had no idea even existed due to my stereotypical (and uninformed) LA views.

Johnnie's is one of these places.  The pastrami sandwich looks great, but even so I did not have it.  That's next time.  I am a sucker for anything with a chili-cheese mix on it so I got the hot dog with said toppings.  Good quality dog, burnt a little just how I like it.  And an order of fries, too much food, a tad pricey, but good hole in the wall junk food.  Not going there often, but it fits the bill well, no doubt.

So this is just to say don't believe the hype, LA can be every bit east coast, every bit San Francisco, every bit grungy, every bit down home, every bit you name it.... NO OTHER place can really make this claim ALL WHILE keeping its own amazing and unique identity.

Screw the haters!!!!

Pastrami sandwiches, fries and pickles are great. Nice late night place. Yeah its a bit pricey for a sandwich, but, try shelling out  $16 for a pastrami sandwich at Katz's in New York. I am happy with Johnnie's any day.

This is the place for pastrami on a french roll, its Vienna beef brand all their stuff is,  thats why its expensive! They cook their food on a grill i like the onion rings and fries, also like their ice that comes in the drinks, this place has not changed since it opened same music machines, tables and chairs, even waitresses...do not come here if you want pastrami on rye or a greasy cheaper version like the Hat. They also have shrimp and chicken, pies and most importantly BEER!

Waitress:  (Incredulously eyeing me, my date, and my empty plate).  "Did you each get your own pastrami sandwich?"

Me:  "Yes, of course!"  (Looking at her funny for even asking.)

Waitress:  "You were able to finish all that?"

Me:  ....  (Yes.  I may be thin, but I CAN pack it in!!!)

Gawd this place is good!!!

Screw The Hat!!  Their pastrami sandwiches are pretty  much the same size as The Hats and it's much less greasier!  They serve you freakin pickles while you wait! They're very delicious.  They're chilli cheese fries are to die for, they don't taste greasy (even though they probably are).

They have their own parking seperate from Tito's Tacos and Cinco De Mayo.  4 stars because this place is cash only, and it's a bit pricey. still I love this place!

It's definitely worth trying!

SYNOPSIS - two ana half stars for mediocre sammies, friendly service, airy patios, and overpriced menu items.

I know going into this, veg options are limited. We're talking swiss or american cheese sammy. I went with the $6 swiss cheese option. Boyfriend got the pastrami (FYI it comes pre-dipped, if you want extra dip let your server know. It also looks like the stuff you tip out of a Styrofoam tray when you purchase a steak. Janky.).

His sammy was stuffed with a generous heap of pastrami. Mine was lettuce, tomato, and a couple slices of Costco-tasting swiss on a roll that was a wee stale. However, the onion rings were hot, fried hoops of fabulousness. ORDER THE ONION RINGS!! You can also order pitchers of beer here, that is awesome and noteworthy.

A vegetarian accompanying her omnivore boyfriend to a pastrami place is bad news from the get-go. Jenn L tries to be fair & balanced - I'm NOT knocking J.P. on the sparse veg options, I WILL knock them for my sammy being pricey and tasteless (even with the addition of mustard). Boyfriend said his pastrami wasn't that spectacular. the winner: ONION RINGS!!

Nice airy patio seating available with a fire pit. Our waitress was sweet and attentive (she kindly made sure our bowl of dill pickles stayed full). Park in the lot behind or on the street. CASH ONLY.

**Some of you jokers checked off "yes" to J.P. accepting cards. You clowns clearly cannot read or hit the sauce prior to writing your review.

Love, love Johnnie's!

I've been coming here with my family for over 15 years. No, we don't live near here but my parents used to eat here when they were dating and we visited as a family whenever we went to LAX or made trips out to LA and Culver City to visit friends and family.

Their pastrami sandwich, which I will admit is a bit pricey, to me is SO worth it! Pretty lean, large generous portion and soft fresh bun. Make sure you get it dipped with an order of their onion rings. The fries are the old school steak fries and are quite yummy but their onion rings are scrumptious! They also toss in their homemade pickles which give a great accent to the sandwich and add a bit of "green" to your meal :)
The place is definitely old school, it hasn't changed since I was a wee youngin. They have a few indoor booths with table top juke boxes but the best seats are the ones on the patio near the outdoor fire pits. One word of warning though, they don't take credit cards!

This place has the best pastrami sandwich....I like it a lot better than the Hat and other joints that I've been to.  The slices are cut so nice and thin, and the bread is perfect.  What I like to do is (and my friends like to do this as well) ask the waiters for some extra pastrami sauce (juice)....Dip it in or pour it over the sandwich and mmmm...perrrfect!

Favorite late night hang out locale. They have firepits outside. Chill place to hang out. Mom pop pastrami place that's been around forever. Pastrami is pretty good, but why so expensive I don't know. I like their onion rings. I just mainly like coming here with group of friends and hanging out, sharing a pitcher, and being mesmerized by the fire.

I was introduced to this place by my homies Kevin C and John W back when we were at USC.  One late Thursday night we were hungry but didn't want to make the regular Chano's run.  SO John W comes up with the idea let's hit Johnnies.

I'd never had pastrami by itself before.  The only thing I had to compare it to was Chano's mixup burger where we considered it more like a topping.

So we all jumped in Kev's mustang at like 1:30 in the morning and made the run down Adams near Crenshaw.  When we got their, I chased off a couple of crack heads and  dapped up the local corner boy.

If you are not from the hood, you might want to go to the Culver City location because the Adams spot can be a bit, shall we say... intimidating.  So in the words of John C, "If youre a punk ass bitch and you know it, you may want to jump on the freeway."

Once you get there, you have only one option: The Pastrami Sandwich  Special.  Anything else is like going to Morton's and ordering a hamburger.  However heed my warning, Johnnie's in not something you should eat more than once a month.  Anything more and your life insurance policy will deny your claim when you die under it's suicide exemption clause.

Bring cash and if you are on Adam's leave your wallet, credit cards and jewelry at home.

I've only gotten take-out so I will change my rating if a future sit-down experience is different.

I ordered a burger and side salad, totaling 12 something.  My boyfriend and I showed up to discover it was cash only.

Me: Do you want me to go back and get my wallet?

Front counter lady: How much do you have?

Boyfriend: 11 dollars.

Front counter lady: That's fine.

Wow.  We walked away bowled over by the anachronistic flexibility.

Boyfriend really liked the ambience (he's into greasy spoon looking places) and outdoor fire pit seating.  I'm not so hot on charbroiled burgers and the 5 dollar salad turned out to be just chopped lettuce and tomatoes exactly like my burger toppings.  I liked the groovy throwback feel of three elder ladies slowly making shakes and overseeing the late night crowd at their owned place.

4 stars because it is a bit pricey but their service was so uncharacteristically L.A. that I have a fantastic impression of them.

The biggest overall drawback to Johnnie's is that most everything on the menu is really just too expensive.  While what you do get is quality, the cost is just a little too high.  It's charmingly excessive though: chilli dogs, pastrami sandwiches, and other retro, health-unconscious diner fare.

Both the onion rings and french fries are quality.  Crispy and always exceptionally fresh.

The garlic pickles that they bring to the table after you sit down are fantastic.  I'll often get cravings just for those.

Always nice to sit outside by the fire pits to see semi-scenic Sepulvida, though I've been buzzed by a few stark raving crazy folks shuffling their way down the block.

The waitstaff is always nice, down to earth and attentive.

While I don't go here often, it's always fun to head here everyone in a while, with a group of friends and just enjoy a leisurely late night dinner.

What is pastrami anyway? And why is it $9.95 for one sandwich? I had the chili hot dog which was worth the $4.95, because with all that excess chili, I got to have a few chili fries, too. Good for a post-business trip, coming-from-the-airport-starving stop.

FOOD

We decided to come here one night after some persuasion from a friend that we should try something besides the Jack in the Box. I give the food about 2 or 3 stars based on the price and the quality:

Pastrami Sandwich - Overpriced (at about $10 for just a sandwich [no sides]) but they do pile on the pastrami, so I have to give that to 'em.

Onion Rings - 5 bucks for a pretty sizeable portion which was enough for the four of us to share

SERVICE

The service here was great, I must admit. Our waitress said she had been working at the restaurant for over 20 years and she also lectured to be sure to do something nice for out mothers on Mothers Day. I also liked how she didn't put up with any crap from my drunk friend. It was entertaining to watch.

Good!  just too fuckin expensive....

BUT it's a good place to take a girl after you've already courted her awhile.  meaning don't take her here on the first date, but the 4th or 5th date would be acceptable.  sit outside by the fire.

i like Harvey's Pastrami on Motor and Palms for the best pastrami on the block...

also, Johnny Pastrami's doesn't take credit cards...the management is fucking stupid.  they have no idea how severely limited they are by not coming into the 21st century and accepting plastic... it's a pain in the ass to go to the bank/ATM and then go to johnny's.

If you're looking for great pastrami, you've found the right place.

Sure, the parking isn't ideal. Sure, the lighting and decor do not create a romantic ambience. Sure, that girl's phone number you got earlier that night at the club was fake. Sure, there aren't really cute waitresses in short skirts. Sure, that shirt you're wearing does not look good at all. Sure, the prices are a tad higher than other pastrami joints. But none of these things should really affect you that much when you get this great of a pastrami sandwich.

Now, if you don't like pastrami that much or don't really think their pastrami sandwich isn't all that and then some, then I can see why you're not a fan of this place.

But any other pastrami sandwich in southern california doesn't even seem to compare. Hat? Please. Jerry's? Don't make me laugh. Tommy's? Even worse. Sure these places make a good one, but they're not nearly as good as what Johnnie's has to offer. Johnnie's has a great combination of saltiness, juiciness, awesomeness and richness to make a great pastrami sandwich. I'm not really sure what they're putting in here to make it this great, but whatever they're doing, they're doing it better than anyone else in SoCal. Honestly I wouldn't even both with the burgers, fries or anything else they have. It's like going to Japan and trying to get a taco. Why would you even waste your money and stomach on that?

One thing that makes me laugh is people complaining about the price. If anyone can show me a decent sized pastrami sandwich that's under seven dollars, please show me. So paying a couple more bucks(which you would probably spend on parking somewhere around los angeles in meters anyways) doesn't seem to unreasonable.

If you want cheaper prices, greater quantity and lower quality, go visit a place called Hometown Buffet. They should have exactly what you're looking for.

Inspired by reviews that I read on Yelp and curiosity, I made the trek today to Johnnie's for the first time.  Just a stones throw from the infamous Tito's Taco, it is on sacred food real estate.
I wanted to get a taste for the entire place so we shared a pastrami sandwich, the two hot dogs plate with chili, cheddar, pinto beans and grilled onions and the chili cheese fries.
Let me save you some time here....go for the pastrami, its juicy, tender and among the best I have ever had including Katz's deli in NY. It's served on a really fresh steamed roll or you can have it on rye.
They use crinkle cut fries which is a plus, the chili was so-so, the hot dogs were 1/4 Vienna beef, nothing special.
Next time I go for a pastrami, I will try the burger and let you know. Bring lots of cash because it is expensive and they don't take plastic.

Overhyped, Overpriced, Overrated.

I went here after a late night in West L.A. for the famous Johnnie's Pastrami.  Why people give this place such high praise is beyond me.  There are so many other places to get cheaper, tastier pastrami.

Three examples: The Hat, Oinkster, and Canter's Deli.

My brother said it was an off night for the joint, but for 10 bucks a sandwich, I can't afford to have another off night here.

The jukeboxes at each booth were cool, though.

3 stars, without the hype and adjusted for inflation.

My coworkers and I went to this place after a late night of working. I wasn't floored by the atmosphere or the food. The pastrami was OK, the proportions were a bit on the hefty side, which is very American. I didn't like the greasy feel of the menu, I'd rather get greasy fingers from my fries, not the menu. There were a boat load of people who had ordered to go streaming in the whole time we were there.

I wuold come here again for a late night meat and grease fix, but if I find another late night joint. I'll go there.

Sandwiches are great, but pretty pricey....could get similar at The Hat for half the price. Bring a HAT to the WESTSIDE PLEASE.

I've tried Pastrami at Canters, Brents Deli, The Hat, and Phillipe's and I still think Johnnie's has the best taste. The portion is huge so it's worth the price. I also like their vanilla milkshake...especially with fries. They also open late which is a plus if you're a nocturnal creature like me.

I remember as a kid in the 80's going to this little joint... ordering a Pastrami sandwich or a chili-dog... chili-fries... shake... man... thinking about this place just makes me drool.

So when I go visit now (I don't go as often because I try to eat healthy), I savor it.  The joint looks the same as I remember when I was 8.  I think even the waitresses are the same.

The pickles are fantastic... and this place is open really late!  One of the few places in LA that really are... so after a night out you can always count on Johnnie's being open.  It's nice to chill at the outdoor patio w/ the fire-pits.

YUM YUM EAT 'EM UP!!!!  'nuff said.

Johnnie's is good...my only thing is the prices. I don't really want to pay almost $10 for a pastrami sandwich (I mean we're not at Jerry' s Deli right?) Make sure you eat there and get your share of pickles and soda with crushed ice! The combo with fries is about $4 more. My friend Jon swears by the chili cheese fries. Don't get me wrong it is a pretty good pastrami...just remember they don't take credit cards!

This place kept getting better and better for me...It's open late, they serve corned beef and they have GOOD potato salad (which is extremely hard to find-anywhere).  They have actual working juke boxes at each table and it's only 25 cents for two songs!  Everything tastes great -helping make up for the price, which really isn't that bad.  The only thing I would change is the waitresses who could be a little...ummm...happier?

And they have take-out!

Great pastrami, but smaller portions than the Hat and more expensive. If I only hadn't discovered the Hat maybe this spot would have gotten 4 stars, but sadly this place doesn't compare to the Hat.

If you love pastrami, this is definitely the place to go. They give you a cup of aus ju (i think?) if you ask for it. I've only been here late night after a night on the town and it always hits the spot. It helped that I lived a few blocks away too. The outdoor area is fantastic too, especially with the lovely weather down south.
