I am not a flower-type girl.  So when my now-husband and I were planning our wedding, I just wanted something simple.  And I saw no reason why I should sell a kidney for some blooms that would be relegated to dry flakes in the span of a week anyway.

With my aforementioned animosity toward all things floral, I had no idea where to start.  A friend recommended a florist near Union Square.  I got quoted $250 for a bouquet of six calla lilies wrapped in ribbon.  I'm no horticulture expert, but excuse me?  Are you on crack?  These are FLOWERS, people!  Needless to say, I walked out fast, furious and flower-less.

Enter John Street Florist.  My fiance and I pulled open the door to a rain forest of beautiful and varied potted plants on display up to the fifteen-foot ceiling, a veritable rainbow of colored vases catching rays of sunshine in the window, and an entire garden of cut flowers on every available inch of countertop.

I  approached the counter guy with a purpose.  "Hi," I said.  "We're planning a wedding.  I'd like a bouquet of callas, and I'm not paying more than $100 for it.  What can you do?"

The counter guy nodded soothingly and began to list the amazing possibilities, all within my price range.  How would I like the ribbon around my bouquet?  What type of bouttonieres were the men wearing?  What type of lapel did my fiance have on his suit?  Did I want delivery?  The questions kept coming, but the prices stayed sane!!

My bouquet of callas priced out at $75 flat.  Add three bridesmaids' bouquets, five bouttonieres and a special orchid corsage for my mom, the final bill was still under $300.  I walked out with a smile and my wallet intact.

I'm happy to say these guys also know their customer service.  I got a call a week in advance to review the order and finalize timing.  I say again: THEY called ME!  The delivery arrived on time, every piece cooled and packaged with care.  Five stars!
