2 people + 1lb of steamed shrimp + 4 cups of cocktail sauce = bliss.
That's all I've ever come here for - the steamed shrimp. And it's excellent. It can be a bit crowded and noisy. But I like the atmosphere. I love the brick patio.
3.5 Stars.
First choice Faidley's was closed on Sundays, then Duda's was closed for the weekend too, so we settled on trying John Steven's for crab cakes.
The crabcakes were baseball sized with some lump and also some filler. Crisp on the outside and tender juicy on the inside. There were a few little hard pieces that I had to spit out (does that mean it's not lumpy enough?). Otherwise, tasty. Served with fries, veggies, tarter sauce and cocktail sauce for $24. The Lobster Cobb salad had bacon, blue cheese, and a few very small pieces of lobster. At $13, not expensive, but was expecting a little more than 1.5 ounces of lobster. Oysters good. Prince William mussels good. The service was great.
Unfortunately, I haven't tried that many crab cakes so I can't compare this to any of the other local places that serve this. Sounds like Faidley's is the one to beat and I really wish I could've tried that.

Pretty friendly service, pretty empty on a Tuesday night. They have a little over a dozen beers on tap, and the bartender is very happy to discuss each of them at length with you, offering generous free samples.
OK, I've gotta admit that I've been going here for ... let's see... over 2 decades!? The bar anyway. The relatively recent dining room & patio are a whole different world where I've never even ventured, but hang in the bar with its beat up tables and tin ceiling, and you're back in the Fell's Point of old. The outdoor tables are great too- watch the tugs pollute the harbor as you editorialize on the strange, wonderful mix of old-time locals and new yuppie invaders shuffling by. The draw for me has always been the steamed clams, mussels, and shrimp at the bar. Alas I do miss their little sushi counter. Yes their menu food is worthy, but for whiling away an afternoon with some cold ones and steamers... nirvana.
Great big shrimp, yummy Rockfish, tasty beer battered fish, hand cut chips, good selection of beers, ales and stouts.
Beautiful old bar, nice back dining room and outside patio. One of our favorites in all of Bmore!
Outdoor dining and people watching are the highlights of this pub.
Beers were cool, shaded patio seating was comfortable, but the food was less than stellar. Fish and chips were undercooked - fish was cooked through, but the breading was mushy under its crispy exterior. Sandwiches were deemed "okay" by the rest of our group - not stellar. Fries and potato chips were over-salted.
The bartender's mixed drinks were on the weak side, and not as creative as we've come to expect from Fells and Canton. Stick to the beers.
Excellent seafood and a large wine list in the warehouse district.. Try the snapper.
John Stevens is the kind of joint that I wished we had more of in Philly. Something about a seriously tattooed middle aged rough looking female with a missing front tooth making your sushi at her in view little satellite kitchen that says everything about Fells Point that made it infamous. A spit from the water and across the street from the "police station" where "Homicide" was filmed, the bar is great and the trencherman's menu terrific with a huge gulp of seldom seen beers. Talk about atmosphere/ When they say that Baltimore is unapologetically a blue collar town, John Stevens says Amen!

Sit outside. Order Rockfish.
The saffron sauce and lump crab topping will leave you chasing this flavor for months after you've enjoyed it...
When I first moved to Baltimore my boyfriend and I stumbled across this place, and I was delighted to find a portobello mushroom sandwich on the menu. Our waiter confessed that mine was the first they'd ever made, but it was still absolutely amazing. Yum.
Just one problem however - it's since been removed from the menu, much to my chagrin. I've heard rumors that it's trying to be an "upscale seafood restaurant," which it is so not. The selection of vegetarian food is minimal, and the kitchen closes much too early. While the quesadillas are pretty tasty, and the salads are nice, there's not even a black bean burger which is pretty standard veg*n pub fare and usually keeps me happy. I think people forget that those who don't eat meat still like to drink and would prefer to do both in one location every once in a while!
Anyway, the lack of veggie burger or portobello sandwich is my main complaint (what else would I eat with fries? The fries, by the way, alternate between awesome and terrible - ask the bartenders, they'll tell you if it's a good fry night or not). I give it four stars because one of my besties works there, and most of the other staff are super friendly. Great place to drink, okay place to eat, probably a great place to eat if you're an omnivore. Still, I keep going back.

Spent three days in Baltimore. Had lunch on two of those days at John Steven. The crab cakes and asian coleslaw are delicious! My girlfriend had the fish and chips - twice - and she liked it as well. The vegetarian spring rolls are tasty and there's a decent beer selection. In the touristy part of the city, but it's not a tourist trap.
Local Pub that has pretty darn good food. The beer selection is varied enough and extensive enough to suit anyone in your party. The fact that it is right on/ near the water is pretty neat as well as you can easily stroll through Fells Point waterfront before or after your meal.
The steamed shrimp are large and worth it as is the sushi stand that was recently re-established there. It is a little dark inside and a table in the bar area can be hard to get at times, but this bar is unpretentious and a good pick if you want to see what Fells was like before all of the additions and renovations that has left the general area feeling less like a working waterfront neighborhood and more like Georgetown.
Pretty good bar in a great area of Baltimore. First time in Baltimore and this neighborhood made me respect Baltimore a lot more as an artsy, down to earth city. The service was a little slow, but a quiet Saturday lunch was very enjoyable. The place specialized in seafood, and although I wanted a crab cake sandwich, the waiter recommended the fish and chips. I split raw oyster with someone which was 6 for $8.99 and fish and chips were $11.99. My friend cut is lip from teh oyster shell as they seemed to be a little dirty, but enjoyed them as they were his first. The Fish was very good and flaky with a beer battered exterior and the fries were hand cut, but not as crispy as they could have been. Overall a nice place. If it wasn't, it probably wouldn't be in business with all the competition around it.
Have to disagree about the crabcakes, I got the jumbo lump crab cakes and they shredded the lumps with the spices and filler and lung pieces, I asked the Chef why he did it, he said "to hold it together", I said "how do you know Its jumbo lump (as stated on menu at market price) if you break up the lumps?, He assured me it was all jumbo lump. This is the ONLY place in Baltimore who does this. ld it together. Excellent sushi and other items.

Nice neighborhood hang-out. Service is friendly, food is good if not spectacular. Selections range from nicer dining room fare to simple pub grub and even sushi. Prices are reasonable for a neighborhood haunt. Can't say enough about the nice waitstaff - it is the kinda place you just want to drop into on a regular basis and hang.
This place slays. Great decor and ambiance, great beers, excellent seafood, and an attentive staff. When they saw our disappointment with one item being taken off the menu, they whipped it up special for us. Great place!
Food was Ok - but with new ownership, verey sad - no reflection of previous life. Bar was full of life, food was great and the shushi hit the spot.
I will not go back -
If you love seafood; you'll love John Stevens LTD. I didn't have to ask for a thing because every time I have gone the service has been excellent even on the bar side. They also have a great outdoor area even for the winter. I recommend the "Stuffed Mahi"- the name alone makes my mouth water. Their crabcakes are huge and worth every penny. The prices are a bit steep only because I would like to eat there everyday. Check it out you will be pleased.
After having been on the West Coast for so long, I'd forgotten how much local color and character there is in Fells Point. Of course, I knew I could always find a good bar with a nice mix of beers, but I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. I basically used The Force to pick this place.... I was meeting up with an old friend & her fiance, walking along Thames in search of food, and I just happened to glance at their menu as we passed. Little did I know that there was a whole covered patio area in the back behind the classic bar and outdoor seating. The menu claimed "baseball-sized crabcakes", so you know I had to try it. EASILY the best crabcakes I've had in years (sorry, Mom :-)). Meaty, but with the right amount of stuffing and seasoning to make it a full main course. And, yes, they actually were baseball sized. Two of those, plus a pretty nice imported beer who's name escapes me right now, and I was right as rain for the rest of the night. I'll definitely come back the next time I'm home.
