Review Highlights
Stopped by here because the ribcook off was nearby.
The craps table only let's you do 2x odds unless you bet $25 on the pass line (which then you get to do the standard 3-4-5 odds).
My husband and I stayed here for two nights on my birthday. There were some good things and some bad things! First off the staff in all areas of the hotel were very nice. From valet to check-in to room service the staff was spot on. We stayed in the newly renovated East Tower. The room was nicely decorated and seemed very well maintained however the walls are super thin and it can get a bit noisey between the train and the freeway. We ate at the Noodle Hut and loved it. We both had the Pad Thai, some of the best I have had!! truly
They have cut back on employees, mainly cocktail waitresses so you have to flag down one of the casino employees to get a drink. They are usually busy refilling machines so this can take a long time. Also there machines seemed really tight. We only played a little bit but there wasn't any winning going on!
A nice little in town get away but just don't expect too much!

Lord knows John tries his hardest to run this place since his son almost lost it for them in the late 90's. The hotel is nice, but could use some modernization. When I stayed there back in December is was fine, except the hotel seemed to be over-run with Asians.
The pool boy, Charlie was a fine young man, he helped me whenever I needed it, but the woman in the morning, I forget her name but she looks to be about 150 years old under a layer of 80 year old make up was very rude to me. She didn't believe I was a guest due to my age, but every time I showed her my name in the computer she shut up. The security team was great, they were always on the ball and patrolling the floor. In Rosie's, the food was only ok, but the service was great, make sure you sit at the bar.
But if you are going to stay in Reno, stay somewhere like the Peppermill, they have a lot going on for the entire family, but if you get a nice suit facing the west to view the mountains, you over look a ghetto ass apartment complex. Someone should burn that shit to the ground.

We stay at the Nugget 3 to 4 times a year. It's very convenient to what our activities in Reno are, which is not always gambling!
We stayed over the Labor Day weekend to enjoy the Rib Cook-Off (which was great, see that review).
Our room was in the West Tower, and I know to ask for the train yard side which is a lot quieter than the freeway side. We never heard the trains. The room is fine, not the latest decor, but I'm not here for the decor. Everything was clean and everything worked, the room was pleasant. It was non-smoking and I could not smell smoke. We never heard our neighbors, but we could hear people in the hall. The TV is outdated, but OK. We used the gym which could use some upgrading of equipment. The pool is very nice, it's good to be swimming out of the direct hot sun under their glass roof. The locker room was very clean. Poolside room service was exactly on time as they promised.
We used Rosie's the most for non-rib food. Our experience has been very good here, the staff is very nice no matter the time of day or night and the food is good. We have fun playing and losing at Keno, and the Keno runners are always sweet and upbeat.
We'll be staying there again, due to the convenience for us and the pleasant experience we always have there.

An old timey, worn out casino. I can't see a lot of merit to the Nugget. Well, there is the golden rooster that you can observe in the case in the lobby. That's about it!
Highly impressed. This place is nice but don't compare it to any casino/resort in Vegas. For Reno its pretty good, big gaming area and decent rooms. Very similar to the Peppermill in Reno, with lots of glittering lights and free booze. I appreciate a good, quick waitress that brings you a drink without asking! I will definitely be back to kick it soon.
Oh and room service offers the famous Awful Awful burger.

I stayed at the Nugget during May 14 and 15. My room was on the 11th floor (nonsmoking), and to my disappointment the room smelled on cigarettes, it was awful. The color scheme of the room was a nightmare, and the bathroom had water stains on the ceiling, cracks and then some dark spots that looked suspicious. The 5 o'clock wake up call was on time except the 4 AM train whistles had taken care of waking me up.
I ate at the restaurant Rosie's, the food was alright, except a vanilla milkshake was confused with chocolate and I still had to pay for it. It is a little on the expensive side.

It has been over thirty years since I have been to Reno, if this visit to the Nugget is any indication of the best they can do, it may very well be another thirty plus years. Yet in all fairness, I must say that there were some bright shinning moments during our stay through the Thanksgiving weekend.
When my wife and I arrived on Friday afternoon, about 3:10 pm (check-in is no sooner than 3:00 pm) we pulled into the lane indicating Valet Parking, when we pulled in, we saw an office sign for Valet, but no marker, sign, or personnel indicating where we should be to receive the service, we realized that perhaps, we should go to the office area and ask. Yep, we had to ask and then they took the keys.
We then went inside to stand in a loooong line to check in, now it seems to me that if you know that people can not check in until 3:00 pm that maybe there should full staffing on duty to receive them, guess not. They had three people checking the looong line in and it was very slow. Almost everyone in line was complaining about the wait. When I finally got to the check-in I discovered he was a new supervisor and although polite he was learning the system.
We then went to our room and found although we had asked for a non smoking room, it truly didn't matter. The recirculated air from the casino was just pumped into the room anyway, in other casinos in Las Vagas and Laughlin the non smoking rooms we have had are very clean smelling. We layed down to take a nap (wife had been up early shopping the sales) and the guest next door came in and called everyone he knew about the $20 bill he had found on the street, we know because the rooms are so poorly sound proofed/insulated that the whole conversation was clearly heard. Also, what is with the honking horns outside along with the traffic noise of the freeway, napping was not possible.
We then showered and had dinner at the The Steakhouse Grill (this was a bright moment). We were seated in the back section and Donovan our waiter immediately appeared and took our drink order. They were very well done, the Manhattan was excellent (is this drink making a come back?) and my wife enjoyed her Grey Goose Lemon Drop immensely. Donovan answered our questions and took our order. The wife had prime rib, superbly done and my bone-in rib-eye was to tender, hot and succulent. Service was attentive, yet unobtrusive.
We gambled a bit and then went to bed and slept until the horns started in again...geez, what is the the attraction?
We left the casino to do some birthday gift shopping (we were there to share a birthday celebration for a relative) and went to the mall, nice place. On our return, we toured the grounds and were suitably impressed with the 5th floor pool, my wife needed a haircut and we went to the salon. Harold cut her hair and did a great job, she is very happy with the results and I have to admit, so am I (another bright spot).
While she was getting her haircut I went to Leroy's Sports Bar and watched football, nice but nothing like the casinos in Las Vegas, this one had a few screens with the games, not every game like I am used to.
We lunched at Jon's Oyster Bar---can we say greasy spoon??? It was pretty unimpressive to say the least.
Saturday evening we had dinner in the Rotisserie Grill, blah! The server Stacy was great, but the food was limited and very bland. We believe that Home Town Buffet may be able to give them some pointers.
Overall, the personnel were very polite and professional, they are understaffed, and under trained. The accommodations are poor, given no thought to quality in an effort to stuff as many people in as possible at the lowest cost and effort. The food was also blah (except at The Steakhouse Grill).
My wife and I have decided that we will be staying elsewhere next time we visit Reno as this experience was not all that and a bag of chips.

I am very surprised by all of the good reviews on this place, granted I went there a few years ago, however I can't see how this place got any better with age... It probably also doesn't help that I had just returned from a week in Ibiza Spain before landing at SFO and driving directly to Reno for a bachelor party.
When we arrived we found out that there Rib Festival was going on, I thought, cool I can eat some great ribs while I am here. What I didn't think about was that quality of the people who also would be visiting this fine festival. People who alone were risking the weight limit of the elevator and were smoking with their air tanks still hooked up. Food coolers on wheels that also doubled as their suit case, hand bags which was a plastic shopping bag with some duct tape to keep things together. I grew up in Montana and there is plenty of hicks out in those parts of the woods however this place was the convention hall for all of the red necks from all over the states!
Since I am writing about John Ascuaga's Nugget Casino Resort I will do my best to write about the resort itself since I hope that every weekend is not like this. We arrived late at night and they did not have enough staff so we waited forever to be checked in, while we waited we wanted a girl face plant and pass out, another lady fight with her boyfriend and we took bets on whether the person working behind the counter actually passed the fourth grade. When we did get our room and had requested non smoking when we reserved the room weeks before they told us that that a non smoking room was not available...
The hotel room pretty much sucked since it was smoking, I enjoy casinos however I also enjoy not being in the smoke all day so having a non smoking room is important to me. The casino is decent on a Reno scale, if your thinking Vegas the place is a dump. The people working there were not very friendly however I probably wouldn't be if I had to deal with the crowd that came for the Rib Festival which was right outside. I can't remember if I won or lost money, I do remember that the trip was a total culture shock and my experience at the hotel was no where what I was hoping for.

I have stayed at the Nugget at least five times and each time it seems to go another notch down hill. They have revamped the rooms, but you pay a premium price for a HDTV and a few extras. What I really resent is the automatic bill for a "resort fee" when you do not even use those facilities. Also they will not grantee a non smoking room. The restaurants are a bit pricey for Reno standards, so I would eat somewhere else. There are much better deals at nicer places so I really can not recommend this place at all. Sorry.

My wife and I married in Reno, and we decided to stay at The Nugget for the weekend. We had the absolute best time that a young couple could have had. Our suite was a little too gaudy for my taste (too much gold) and the view was garbage (literally, overlooking a waste facility and a train yard), but the amenities, features, food, and service were all exemplary.
For starters, the reservations desk was a pleasure to deal with. They took time to explain their room rates, their package deals, and weren't pushy at all. They let us make the decisions and simply supplied the necessary paperwork to fill out. Having not stayed overnight in Reno prior to this occasion (I have since), I can't really compare their room rates to other casinos. I do know that there are cheaper places out there, but since we were getting married, of course we wanted to go all out. Additionally, upon arrival, their front desk and concierge service were also very professional and courteous.
The package we chose came with the room for a few days, complementary breakfast buffet, and more. I'll get into the food later.
Next, the room -- as I stated earlier, the room was a little over-the-top for my tastes (I'm a 'less is more' kind of guy), but I should have expected the gold trim on everything if we were staying at The Nugget. I can't remember the name of the suite that we stayed in, but it was more than spacious and comfortable.
The casino is very nice, but this is coming from your typical 'Oooh, look at the pretty lights' Californian who makes their way to Nevada maybe once a year. All I do know is, they kept our drinks coming and we paid for most of our wedding through slot play. Damn fine if you ask me.
Lastly, the food. Oh lord, the food. The breakfast buffet is absolutely delicious (think of any traditional breakfast item and they had it), and comes with complimentary mimosas. For dinner (post-wedding), we ate at The Nugget's steakhouse... again, amazing food. Have you ever had food so perfect that words couldn't describe? Yeah, it was like that. Steak and lobster cooked to perfection, baby veggies, loaded mashed potatoes, and the freshest post-meal coffee served on a silver platter? Beautiful.
We cannot wait till we return. If you're heading to Reno and are looking for a casino a step above the rest, I strongly recommend John Ascuaga's Nugget .

The newly renovated rooms are nice and spacious, while the elevators are lightning quick! However, the temperature everywhere in the casino was kept at an uncomfortable 70+ degrees for some reason or another. Their maintenance said that even when you set the room temperature to the lowest setting, which is 60 degrees, it'll still feel like 70 degrees. He said that the air conditioner was not an air conditioner, rather, a cooling system in which the air is run through a bunch of coils with cold water going through them. Go figure!

DISCLAIMER: The room was free. Boyf's coworker gets comps often, and so my whole trip to Reno was seen through rosy-hued glasses.
We stayed in a room in the recently-remodeled East Tower last weekend for a quick getaway, and I was actually fairly impressed. Though the room was smaller than I'd hoped, it had a great flat-screen TV (though no HD programming, which didn't make any sense to me). The TV came in handy as the baseball playoffs were on, and I was NOT going to watch my Sox anywhere where people might be betting against them.
The beds were quite comfortable, though a little too soft for my taste. The bathroom and room were decorated with a beige/gold/brown theme that was soothing and a welcome respite from the shiny, loud casino-ness downstairs. I would have liked a little more light in the bathroom, however--ladies need LIGHT to put on makeup and make themselves look lovely!!
DISCLAIMER #2: I don't really gamble. I spent a week in Vegas a while ago and spent maybe $10 gambling. However, the Boyf managed to NET $200 in penny slots, so apparently this is the place to go for loose slot machines! Cocktail waitresses were quick and friendly, though I was asked for my ID more during the three days in Reno than I was my entire senior year of college in Boston. If you tip $1 a drink, they'll be back to find you, trust me!
We visited one bar and two restaurants here (reviews to come) and everyone seemed really friendly and happy to be working there, which is always a plus. Also went to the sports book, where I won $16 on the Pats, which pretty much covered the beer I'd been drinking all day. Incidentally, charging $1.50 total for a hot dog and a beer is BRILLIANT, and everyone should do it. Really. I'd eat way more hot dogs that way.
Also, keep in mind--at 25, the boyf and I were the youngest people there probably by at least 15 years on any given day, except for the tiki bar on Saturday night. Reno is not Vegas.

This is one of the casino's that I like. You can always find a friendly card game in a private room, although you do have to have an invite. I like the way the floor plan is layed out. You can't get lost in there. They also have a great selection of video games etc. for the kids with a staff person present in case of problems. Definitly a good place to go. We stayed there for the New Year party to welcome in 2000. Toot, Toot.

Got my girl best friend a room for her birthday and we went swimming and there was a water fall and I just floated around. Their cheapy room was ok, no windows but who cares the rest of the place is awesome!
Character. The location was great and the price was okay. I came here last year in April for a Morrissey concert which was exceptional. Very small venue for a concert. The celebrity showroom had group booths and there was balcony seating as well. I think capacity was 700 or so. The drink lady hardly came to our table though - because we were in the corner?
There are newer rooms that are more modern, but you're paying almost double the cost. I stayed in the older rooms with floral bed coverings. Very old school Reno.
I don't gamble, but the old people were loving those slot machines. No one was at the poker tables and no one offered me a free drink. Careless, half drunken, smokers are everywhere and always seem to flail their cigarettes about to burn my clothes with the cherry.
If for some reason I ever find myself in Reno again (not likely) I would stay here (or at the cheap dive across the street.)
Oh, skip the hotel food. In & Out is 1 block down as well as some pretty nice folkish bars.

Rooms are ok, night time dealers are the best and the bosses are the most annoying. Food is usually pretty good.

We stayed here Sun-Mon for the BBQ Rib Cook-off this year as we did last year too (but I never wrote a review) It was nice to have a place to cool down between eating ribs all day and being out in the sun!
We left Tahoe early so we can arrive in the late morning at JA Nugget and I am so glad we did. We didn't hit traffic and got to park the truck in valet and check-in by 1130am! AWESOME! Just in time for lunch!
This place had everything - so many restaurants that range from a steakhouse to seafood and then a 24hour diner type. Which is good because I got over BBQ quickly!
The casino was packed with gamblers and people enjoying the a/c. There were still some slots that gave out real coins instead of the new moderen tickets. The tables were good - but I stuck to roulette and pretty much got my money back for the whole trip! Woo Hoo!!!!!! Thank you 00!!!
The arcade was pretty cool with air hockey tables, pin ball machines and stuff it was nice to drop a couple of quarters and have it last longer than a pull!!
The atrium pool was smaller than I thought but it was nice to float for a little bit before I get splashed on by some little dude. They also serve food down there if you like! There is an outdoor pool too - but I didn't see it until we left.
The room was nice and spacious. King bed, table and chairs. There was a pinkmotif and the usual flowery wall paper and loud comforter that probably wasn't washed since the 70's. We were on a non smoking floor but I don't they filter the air for a/c because you can still smell the smoke - not as bad as the casino floor but still smoke smell is there. The tv came with cable and movies and stuff and the shower had nice water pressure!
I liked that they had so much to do there that you didn't really need togo anywhere else - especially to the Virginia St area where the Silver Legacy/Circus Circus... are. Which is kinda good in a way because just staying there you don't realize how kinda dirty Reno really is. Ha.
But everything was easy to do and the staff was super friendly and check-out via the tv was cool. Our truck came in less than 5 min from the Valet (which I heard by 3pm it was full).
Didn't see John Ascuaga walking around, he was probably getting his BBQ!

Sorry to hear that other folks thought that this was OK. My sleeping room is large enough, but in the not yet remodeled [as of 9/08] West Tower, meaning it still is deisgned like a brotherl. Flowered wallpaper, mauve velveteen bed covers, etc. Tacky! It's old enough too that the smoky smell lingers everywhere...
The food, shockingy, has been quite good in Rosie's Cafe, much better than one would think. Room service quicker than one expects too. However, the front desk is always overcrowded - there is a huge wait downstairs now and it's 4AM!
Definitely not good for conferences - our trade show was split into 3 areas, none were optimal.
I guess if you can't afford Vegas.... come here?
It's not as depressing as the downtown Reno casinos. Plenty of $5 blackjack tables on superbowl day, mostly double deck with no doubling on splits, but there was one shoe somewhere I was told. Dealer was friendly, cool aquarium bar called Trader Dick's with some good rum drinks and souvenier tiki mugs. Seemed like some good dining, though didn't eat here. Not a bad place to get a gambling and booze fix at for one day or even overnight.

We stayed here for two days for a Christmas business party, it was nice.
We had a double queen room all done up in pink(yuck), the room was nice had a few chairs, a small table, a desk, and a makeup mirror. The bathroom was nice as well, pretty typical of a hotel with the shower bath combo but a big enough bath that you could lay down and soak, but not big enough to share.
The beds were uncomfortable, but I think most casino beds are so you can't sleep and get up to gamble more. I was also a little cold at night and had to take the blanket off the other bed to stay warm.
The hotel itself was nice, with 4-5 different restaurants, ranging from nice steak house, oyster bar, cafe, to your typically buffet.(see separate reviews of restaurants)
There were of course many bars, we tended to say at the one in front by the front desk because you could pretty much see everyone who walked by and we were a large party so we pulled a ton of tables together and drank plenty. I noticed on the weekend mornings that they had a make it yourself bloody Mary bar for $5 with an assortment of vodkas and spicy and plain tomato juice with all kinds of condiments to add to your drink, I am not a bloody Mary person so I didn't partake but it looked nice.
Major bonus was the Starbucks right by the bar we took over. I need caffeine in the morning and am pretty partial to a venti white chocolate mocha and I honed in on the Starbucks within seconds of checking in to our room.
The amenities were pretty usual with a free fitness room for guest, a salon/spa(see separate review), and nice looking indoor pool.
As far as gambling went I personally didn't do so well but hey I did break even so I guess I didn't do so bad either, but a few people that were with our group won a few hundred. I played a few slots, they had a good selection of nickle, quarter, dollar, and even penny. Then I hit the $5 black jack table, I went with a single deck and started off doing very good I really like the dealer she was awesome, but then the enviable happened they switched dealers, now I should have walked away when that happened but no I decided I was doing good so I would stay that was my mistake the next dealer was hot, and I lost, but hey you win some and you lose some.
We did have a party in the pool terrace room, it was next to the pool on the 5th floor, they decorated it nice and pretty, had a no host bar, a DJ, a tiny dance floor, and a buffet...we had a good time I can't wait for next year.

We stayed here last year for the BBQ Cook-off, and had a really great time. In between gorging on ribs and other goodies, we hung out at the pool. I really liked staying here because it was where the event took place, and there's a movie theater right across the street. So, there was always something to do. This year, we only spent one night, so we didn't meet the three-night stay criteria at The Nugget. Next year, we plan on making a whole three-day weekend of it.

This review is for courtyard. I've personally never stayed in any of the two towers but I've heard it is not so bad.
I got a good deal for a new years at the Nuggets in courtyard. It is a 5 story building that sit right in front of the main two towers. I thought, hey why not and it was one of the worst decisions I've ever made.
This place is definitely NOT ready to accommodate guests. Literally, this building is falling apart. Starting from the elevator to water facets in the bathroom, I can assure you that you are better off going to a motel.
I could not even complain to the hotel because there were just so many things that were wrong with this place! First of all, they still use metal keys for each rooms, elevators and walls & doors are falling apart, alarm clock is broken, water facets in the bathroom sink is missing, bathroom door doesn't lock, water takes forever to go down the drain in both the sink & tub, and I got charged for $10 for asking for wine glasses and bottle opener to the room.
I will not return to this hotel and I strongly recommend everyone to stay away from this place. The Nugget at courtyard needs some serious remodeling.
I was in town playing in a big softball tournament and this was the host hotel. My wife is in the hospitality industry so after a few emails we were upgraded to a mini suite which was nice. The room was a corner room and very spacious. So big that it was tough to sit on the bed or lay in bed to watch TV as the TV seemed to far away. We were traveling with our baby who just started to crawl and the carpets, well I didn't want my kid crawling on them, so he was confined to his play pen. I always enjoy the crazy mix of people that Reno brings together. While waiting to check in, I shared the line with fellow softball players, professional wake boarders and there girlfriends (I am so happy we had a boy) a bunch of bikers, and the best was all of the people there for the big $100,000 BINGO thing they had going on that weekend. Its awesome how at 1:00 AM all of these different people can have a few drinks, lose a few dollars and all get along.
