When I moved from Brookline and thus out of delivery range for Brown Sugar Cafe, I wondered what would fill the void.

I couldn't have been happier to stumble upon Joey's Thai Cafe. I have to admit, at first I wondered -- can a place named Joey's really serve delicious thai food? Well, turns out you really shouldn't judge a book by it's cover!

Joey's food is delicious, very veggie friendly, and very affordable. $7.45 for pad see ew or pad thai! The staff is so friendly and the restaurant has a great family run feel.

Huge fan!

Vegetarian-friendly! They know their veggie broths. Had the Tom Yum soup-- yum!

Thai iced teas to go are my typical fare, so I can't comment much on atmosphere or much of the food, but the staff there is all just so friendly and cheerful-- all of them smile and greet me as I walk in-- I just couldn't resist the star inflation. I hope to come back here for a real meal before I leave Boston this week!

This place is adorable! I enjoy the little signs that teach you thai phrases and the hand-drawn menus. They keep stacks and stacks of magazines for lone diners to peruse while they eat, which I think is a cute gesture.

Yes, it offers most of the "standard" Thai dishes you've come to expect. But you know what? That's ok with me! I had the cashew chicken with brown rice and I really liked it.

The people working there were great and I can't wait to go here again!

Great spot for Thai in Davis Square. Great family feel when you enter from behind the counter and also from the open kitchen. Food is terrific from Spicy Pad Thai,  Pad Kee Mao, Drunkin chicken to the awesome Indonisian Fried rice complete with fried egg. Hope they last a long time and compete with the larger restaurants.

i personally couldnt say more great things about this place. i especially appreciate it as a vegetarian with an even pickier vegetarian boyfriend, they will make ANY item on the menu with tofu in place of chicken, and everything is made to order so the bf can get pad thai with no eggs. everything is very fast and fresh with a decent amount of fresh, perfectly  cooked vegetables in it (which i think many fast food asian places are pretty half-assed on) and brown rice instead of white on request (to make you feel vaguely less guilty about eating takeout AGAIN). ive eaten there about 20 times now, and never had a dish i didnt like.

the atmosphere in the place is always so cheerful, with a sweet girl at the counter and some adorable old people cooking in back. once the bf cleared a messy table next to us before leaving (the table bussing is pretty much self-serve), and the guy at the counter thanked him so much and never forgot, and now whenever he delivers food to our house he asks me how chad is doing. once we went in for dinner and they told us it was thai new years and told is to rinse our hands with a bowl of rosewater that was sitting by the door. theyre all very sweet and try to make their place very nice and i like supporting a place like theirs.

as far as food im a big fan of the terryaki tofu (usually chicken), and pinapple fried rice... the pad thai is a great stand-by too... for dessert the sweet sticky rice with mango is the BEST!

I enjoy picking up some dishes which they're able to make Gluten Free for me, such as the Rama Garden -- Prices are good, and I'm able to order and pick it up in just a few minutes.  Conveniently located.

Why such a low average rating for Joey's Thai Cafe?! I, too, had the Tom Yum soup (with tofu) and it was spicy and d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s!

While the service was very fast and the prices are cheap, the food was bland and nothing compared to Tip Top Thai in Teele Square or Sugar and Spice in Porter Square.  I ordered Chicken Pad See Ew (no, that's really that name of the dish.. it''s usually delicious).  The vegetables were undercooked, there was hardly any sauce on the noodles, and there was almost a complete absence of chicken.

I consider this more of a fast-food Thai restaurant than anything else.  In just a few minutes, they whip up your dish and you pick it up on a high school lunch tray.  I personally won't be going back.

My Gluten Free BFF loves this place. It's cheap, quick, tasty and never gives her any hassle about switching out her noodles. The food was surprisingly flavorful and the noodles are great. I never see anyone in here but I think that's due to location more than anything else.

Ahhh Joey's Thai. You introduced me to the deliciousness of Tom Yum Soup. I'm in your debt.

Seriously though. I had my first bowl of Tom Yum Soup on a whim at Joey's Thai and I've been hooked every since. I've tried it other places and to be honest, this is one of the best ones I've had. The vegetables are crisp despite the fact that they are floating in soup, the broth is just the right amount of spicy. AND they cook it to order, which is awesome.

Their Vegetable Rolls are always crisp and packed full of veggie goodness. And the sweet and spicy sauce is perfect.

I've also tried their Basil Fried Rice dish which isn't the best I've ever had but worth ordering.

Good prices. Eat In, Take Out, and Delivery. Not to mention Joey himself is often there and super friendly.

I love this place... Super friendy staff...
They always give you an abundance of tofu in the pad thai.. and unlike most thai places.. they use a lot of sauce in their dishes! I hate dry pad thai.  And the Thai Basil with Crispy Chicken is to DIE FOR.   yum!

Update:  I have been back 3 times and out of the 4 total I still give 4 stars.  Now that's been said, I love Joey's!  It's my new charming no frills tasty Thai spot.  Where can you get yummy Pad Thai made by a cute mom and pop served up fresh for just $7.45?  Really.  The Tom Yum soup has a wonderful broth and the crab rangoon is good (with a tasty sweet chili sauce), save for the more cream cheese than crab ratio.  I also started ordering my Pad Thai with extra peanuts at no extra charge.

Just remember that Joey's is a savior for your stomach in these thin wallet days..

Update: They have sidewalk seating in the summertime! This is rad! But still not enough for me to up my stars. Just thought you should know. ;-)

-------------------------------------------------- --------

Just like it's predecessor, Benjapon, this place burns everything that hits the pan.

Questions for the owners: Are you the same as Benjapon? Did you just change the name and keep everything else exactly the same? Why do you insist on burning all of my food? No, really. Why is my broccoli black and why are my rice noodles smokey?

That's really all I got... 2 plates of burned food later, I finally decided not to go back, no matter how hungry I am.

this place is so close to where i live, that i had to try it out.
i live even closer to "sugar & spice", but am not a fan of that place.
so i was excited to find joey's thai.
my boyfriend & i walked in and were the only ones eating there.
it seems very clean.
and the girl that took our order was super nice.
we shared, beef pad kee mao (if i remember the name correctly), the chicken pad thai, chicken coconut soup & crab rangoons.
we really liked all of it.
only reason i won't give it a 5 is because i've had much better thai at this place that doesn't even exist anymore that was in china town.
that place was the best!!!
this place was good, but not 5 star good!
still, better than sugar & spice.  and i'd happily walk over to joey's about once a month or so.  :)

This place wasn't so bad (certainly better than 2.5 stars)...I think the trick is to order their spiciest dishes. The drunken chicken had a decent amount of heat, with plenty of fresh basil and crisp veggies.

In regards to earlier claims about the Pad Thai being overly sweet, I didn't try it, but a woman in my party preferred this Pad Thai to the one at Tamarind House, which surprised me.
Also, one of my lunch companions is a picky eater, and the staff were happy to whip up steamed chicken and veggies without any sauce added. Super-fast and friendly service.

Also, it's much easier to find parking down here than near Tamarind House (which, admittedly, is a nicer place for Thai).

They will deliver for dinner, but not lunch. Lunch entrees are generally around $6.95.

Joey's has pretty good Thai food and is quite far from expensive.  The Crab Rangoons are really tasty and you can ask for anything on the menu to be more spicy or less spicy if you want.  Everytime I have ordered, everyone I speak to is extremely friendly and nice.

Dinner for 2 (Pad Thai, Cashewnut Chicken and an order of Crab Rangoon) = $19.85

When my friend suggested ordering from the American-named "Joey's Thai" and I saw that their Pad See-Ew oddly included carrots, I had my doubts.  While the delivery order appeared in a reasonable amount of time, the quality of the food was marginal.  The Spring Roll appetizer and Pad See-Ew entree were nothing special.  We also wound up feeling quite ill after the meal, but we had eaten a bunch of food that day, so I am not sure if I can blame Joey's...just keep that in mind though!

Update: Had some mango curry, it was decent, not bad, not spectacular. If you are in the area and craving Thai, their curry will probably leave you moderately satisfied. On a positive note, their staff are unbelievably friendly and warm.

Blechhh.......
I am not normally this negative, but I have had better Thai food from a box! The place is nice and Joey seems like a gem of a chap, but someone needs to have a chat with the chef.

CAVEAT: I did not try everything on the menu

I went there with three friends and we decided to be super boring - we got Pad Thai, how can you possibly go wrong, right?

WRONG! I got the "spicy" Pad Thai - plain and simple, it was not spicy, it was sweet, very very sweet, kinda like fishy, meaty, peanutty dessert. Shrimp in dessert = bad idea

My friends got the regular Pad Thai and both agreed that it was not worth coming back.

In the spirit of helping out the new guy on the block, I will go back and try some curries next time and update this review accordingly.

Joey, stop by Rod Dee's, try a few of their dishes and try to recreate them, it would be great to have a decent Thai option in the neighborhood.

We've scoured Cambridge for the best pad thai and for us, Joey's gets it. We've found comparable places as far as taste goes, but they're more expensive. Their pad thai has that sweet/savory you look for w/ a good pad thai and it costs less, works for me. This isn't to say I've been disappointed when I've tried their other dishes either- haven't found a Joey's menu item I haven't liked. Also, I love their attention to detail. They have this citrus theme thing going on w/ the awning and wall paint color that I find delightful. And you can't go wrong w/ Family Guy quotes on the walls.

This place is exactly like Benjapon's.  Mediocre, bland, overpriced food -- if you are going to go for a fast food concept the food should be cheap!  The space totally lacks soul and is uncomfortable.  There is waaay too much good cheap Thai food in the area to eat here.  Yuck.

Absolutely horrible! Their pad thai tasted like feet, and smelled much worse! I tried to figure out why, I mean, it should be a very simple and basic dish for them. Apparently it just didn't work out that way. I think they used a dirty pan, that's the only thing I can think of. I just couldn't eat something that smelled and tasted like it came out of someones rear end.

We got the basil fried rice and the spicy pad thai! Both of which were very flavorful. I agree with another reviewer that the spicy dishes are where it's at! They also provide service with a smile. Seeing that it's down the street from us, we'll be getting take out more often.

Too bad they're in that crummy location. I do hope they stay in business unlike some of the other places on that little corner.

A pretty solid place to stop by if you're craving some cheap, fast Thai. My favorites are the mango fried rice and the tom yum noodle soup. The spicy pad thai is decent, but there is something to the previous review about a smoky/burnt flavor. The staff are extremely friendly, and you have to love the rotating Family Guy quotes on the chalkboard.

Joey's provides a fast, friendly, affordable answer to Thai cravings. Their staff is extremely nice, the food is tasty (slightly better than Sugar and Spice, not as good as Tamarind House), and the casual atmosphere (you order and pick up your food at the counter) is perfect for a weeknight when you're too tired to cook. It's also a great place to dine solo - they have an excellent selection of magazines to peruse while you wait and eat. The mango and sticky rice is top notch.

The ultra cheesy slogan "Happy In, Happy Out" that greets you as you walk in is surprisingly accurate here. Brightly colored interior, very friendly service, has the feel of comfort Thai food. Great for noodles, decent for everything else. I compare it to going to a friends house for dinner back in junior high. Their mom always prepared something tasty, even if it was nothing more than mom food. Imagine that, only the metaphor takes place in Thailand.  Gourmet Thai it isn't, but if that's what you're in the market for, there are plenty of fine options around (skip Sugar and Spice, head to the Tamarind House.)
