A wash-and-dry that serves Mitchell's ice cream and sausages?? When I passed this place on the street, I knew I had to go in.
Mitchell's is probably the best ice cream place in San Francisco, but the downside is there is usually a substantial wait (last time we went it was a 30 minute wait at 10:30 at night!) Joey's has a decent selection of Mitchell's flavors and no wait! Plus it's cheaper! ($2.65 for the small size, which is quite a bit of ice cream - bigger than a single at Mitchell's.) The ice cream is super thick (as is characteristic of Mitchell's), so it is a challenge to eat with their weak plastic spoons, but it is so worth it.
I didn't see any sausages in sight, and frankly, I was a little afraid to inquire (a fellow reviewer assures me they are in a freezer somewhere). Too bad -- I think the universe would explode (with joy) if Joey's served Mitchell's ice cream AND Rosamunde sausages.
Alright, so here's the deal. For the past 2 or 3 laundry days, I noticed that I practically spend almost the entire day doing my laundry. I just moved in to this new apartment on Geary and Taylor in downtown SF, and there is laundry in the building... or in the dingy basement to be more precise. Problem is, the washers are basically antiquated and small. AND, there are only 3 of them. I only do my laundry once every 2 weeks, and I have a lot of dirty workout clothes, so at the end of 2 weeks, I have a HUGE load. In other words, I need to do 2 batches because the 3 washers can't accommodate my 2-week load at once. Plus the dryers are not of the powerful kind, so most of the time, I end up doing 2 cycles for each load in the dryer. And it's definitely not a joy going down to the basement to do laundry.... it's a creepy site.
So, after doing the math and figuring out why in the world I end up spending my Saturday doing laundry instead of going out and living life, I decided to scout for another laundromat.
I spotted Joey's, not because of the washers, but because of "ice cream, espresso and sausage" on it's sign. and oh, there's "wash and dry"? perfect. i couldn't wait to do laundry there.
So, here i am right now, at Joey's doing my first ever Joey laundry. yay. I'm impressed. first, i like the card mechanism. instead of using coins, i buy a card for 5/10/20 bucks and use it for almost everything - washer/dryer/detergent. Now, I don't have to carry heavy, clinking quarters around.
And then, the equipment look very decent to me. Well-maintained, clean and functioning. The whole place looks pretty clean to me actually. I got here at 8 am (a few minutes ago) and at 8:30, a guy was already sweeping the place.
Then there's the free WiFi. I LOVE it. It was so easy to connect, and it's very fast - unlike most free WiFi services. Oh yes, it's free.
While waiting for my laundry, I got coffee. Pretty good. It's so early in the morning, so no ice cream for me now. Maybe next time. And I want to try the sausages. Maybe next time.
And the lady attendant, who seems to be a manager or something, seems quite friendly. I left my detergent and luggage in the laundry area while I worked on my laptop in the cafe area, and she told me to move my stuff to the counter area where she worked, to keep them safe. I thought that was nice. Most employees wouldn't volunteer to watch over the customers' stuff.
SO, I woke up 7:10 am, got here to Joey's a few minutes before 8, and now it's 9:05, and my clothes are almost dry. That's more like it. Now, I can enjoy the rest of my Saturday. :D
BTW, 4 stars (i can never give 5 stars for anything related to doing laundry even if the washers were made of gold or something - sorry.)
Forest Gump should change his catchphrase from "We go together like peas and carrots" to "We go together like sausage, espresso, ice cream, and laundry". It's something a lot more people can relate to.
At least on the corner of O'Farrell and Jones.
I finally stopped in to quench my curiosity this Saturday and ordered an italian sausage sandwich. The preparation process went something like this:
-Guy rummages around in the freezer for a sausage for about five minutes (do people actually order these?)
-Guy finally finds sausage and nukes it for about 5 minutes on high.
-Guy plops it on a regular-old foreman grill for another few minutes.
The actual end product wasn't bad, and I'd get one if it was a convenient laundry stop. But if you want a GREAT fresh sausage, stop by Rosemunde in the Haight or Top Dog in the East Bay.
Standard laundry and icecream parlour. I like this place better than anything I've found in the TL and it's affordable. The machines are set back in the building so there isn't a bunch of riff-raff running around. Minus a star, please clean the trash cans in the middle of the room..there were flies - ick.
Their official name is "Joey's Ice Cream, Espresso and Sausage."
That NAME...I couldn't resist.
I wish I had thought of that name first, except I would have made it a little more descriptive...maybe something like: "Kristina's Back Fat, Caffeine Shakes and Clogged Arteries."
Bleah location, and no parking...but Joey's has a little bit of everything...add to that, Laundry and Internet Cafe, and your day is set.
5 stars, without a doubt, even though I know nothing about this place except that is has wonderful signs and an amazing hodgepodge of services. After a few drinks at Bourbon and Branch, the existence of the place may or may not have caused my friend to pee her pants.
PTERY D anyone?
We all have at least one in the family, right? My particularly special relative lives in the TL.
When I visit, I ask if there is anything I can get for him, anywhere he wants to go. Why I ask is a mystery, because the answer is always the same: "$20... and ice cream at that place." That place would be Joey's around the corner. What flavor do you want? I ask. Again, I don't know why I ask, because the answer is always the same: small New York Cherry.
You have to laugh when you first see the place. Joey's Ice Cream, Espresso, and Sausage... and Wash & Dry... WTF?? But over time, because I have been here - like - one hundred times now, I've come to really like it instead of just finding it amusing. First of all, he likes it and they are nice to him, and that makes me happy. He buys a convenient EZ Card from the cashier and pays for his wash that way. Despite the odds against it in this location, it is not gross inside. In fact, they keep it pretty spic 'n span. Today I counted the flavors of Mitchell's Ice cream, and they beat Baskin-Robbins by a nose with 32. You have your standard flavors, of course, but they also have grasshopper, green tea and the like. They have two computers where you can buy internet time. And free wireless for your laptop. There's a couch with coffee table for laptops and magazines. Then about 8 small tables to compute on while you eat ice cream, sausage, and coffee. and wait out your spin cycle.
Joey's loves signs. There are TONS of signs here and many, many rules to live by. They are all posted on separate pieces of paper taped to the walls.

There's not a lot I can do with my bro. He doesn't talk much. He won't walk more than 2 blocks. There are some good Indian restaurants within that two block radius but he won't eat Indian food because it is too spicy. And I won't eat Indian food with him because the spices set him off and he starts raising his voice at me. He can spend the 20 bucks any ol' way he wants, but I'm not taking him for a TL massage, ever.
So, I'm glad that if he has to do the same thing over and over (and over) again, that his fixation is Joey's. There is a pterodactyl hanging from the ceiling over the ice cream counter. And maybe in reference to this, yet another sign 'Ptery D' on the door. OK, these people are just off. But I love them for existing, for cooking sausages, maintaining washers and dryers, and for keeping one little corner of the TL clean, and safe from bare feet and disturbing behaviors.
Their is color and jazz to this
Lovely laundry in the 'loin, I enjoy
A smoke by the door where I watch
The crackies moan for your
Money and time.
Those inside hold children close,
or chew on grilled sausage,
soda in hand, computer screens
leave a glow on their faces
Free wi-fi leaves a glow in my heart.
The Thai man at the counter smiles,
even when a crazed woman tries to storm
the bathroom, or beg his clients' change
he smiles, when i ask for extra napkins
and doesn't charge me when I ask
to upgrade my soda to the larger size.
As I leave, my laundry bag tugging at my shoulder
My laundry basket squeezing against my stomach
I press my nose into my warm scented towels
and sigh.
Joey is a genius. But what on earth does "D Petry" mean?
And what is with the pterodactyl hanging from the ceiling?
It doesn't matter now; off into the night I go
Back to my overpriced tenderloin studio.
Joey's Ice Cream, Espresso, and Sausage...the perfect place for a romantic date, especially if your date is smart enough to figure out how to eat Mitchell's ice cream with super flimsy spoons, which makes it even more romantic. Also of note is the fact that the sausages are frozen right up until the moment you order them. They are then microwaved (one at a time) and then custom grilled on a George Foreman grill right in front of your very eyes, which is also super romantic.
I walk by here every day I almost wish I didn't have a laundry room in my apts. i would like to eat ice cream and do laundry.
Someone take a picture of the sign.
I haven't eaten here before but I can say that it's a great place to do your laundry. They have plenty of machines in different sizes so you never have to wait around (unless maybe you have to use the jumbo machines, there's only two of them). They've also got more than enough carts so you don't end up with people guarding the carts like their firstborn while their clothes are still in the machine. The easy card system is great because it makes it so you don't have to deal with change machines not taking your bills if they're not fresh from the mint. They also have free wi-fi so you can bring a laptop in to kill some time if you feel like it. Not to mention the fact that you can get ice cream, coffee, etc. while you wait for your clothes to finish. Not to damn bad for a laundromat! My only complaint would be that they are a little pricier than my old laundromat but when you look at what you get for that price it more than makes up for it. Also a couple more jumbo machines would be nice...
This place has it all! A full size laundromat in back, ice cream, drinks, sandwiches, and other little bites up front. It even has a small computer bar, WiFi and couches for lounging on a laptop or waiting for laundry. It's imaginable that doing my laundry here would be semi-enjoyable even though I haven't tried dragging my baskets that far yet. However, the couple of times we have gone in were mostly for ice cream, which by the way is Mitchell's so there no way it can't be delicious. The guy we usually get served by is very friendly, gives good sized portions and is always pleasant. We haven't tried much else off their menu, but the food looks appetizing enough where we will be visiting in the future to try other items and certainly get more ice cream.
i haven't had the ice cream, but it all looks really good. the laundry room is good. lots of machines and the "easy card" is a good idea. there is internet so you can do this.
I'm not a businessman in any way shape or form. Hell, I still can barely manage my money. But having had to use a variety of laundromats over time...and having a laptop....I often thought, you're basically a captive market there. I know there are other people who use laundromats, ESPECIALLY in the Bay Area, who also have laptops. So why not offer free wi-fi at the laundromat? This is the genius (well, to me, just common sense) behind Joey's. Anyway, I love people watching here. Nice big windows, your garden variety selection of baked goods; certainly nothing noteworthy for this fine city....but there's a lot to be said for being able to work on your laptop while your clothes are being cleaned. In fact that is what is happening as I type. As the other reviewers noted, the ice cream is good. I've only had it twice, but it is excellent. The two Thai chaps who I usually see there are very nice, hard-working guys. There's even a nice wicker love seat. They have a couple computers where they offer Internet for I think about $12 an hour or something...maybe a bit more. I remember thinking when I saw the price that it was a bit more than some of the Internet use purveyors around town. That said, beggars can't be choosers right? Anyway, the main attraction is that there's a nice (very nice) Internet connection while you do your laundry. And the bathroom is always kept very nicely too.
