I was always so happy when I would get to come out to California from Toronto for work trips cause it meant I got to go see Joey.  Now I live here and can see her anytime I want!  She's the best hairdresser I've ever had, her cuts look good on me from day one and they grow out super good too.

Also I love how well Joey knows her business.  I know she goes to classes regularly and keeps her skills up to date.  She's the most knowledgeable person when it comes to how to cut hair, and great with thick curly hair like mine.

Everyone asks me, "Who does your hair?", and I am sure it's because my haircut is always so perfect!

Joey has been doing my hair for about 5 years now, and this past year I trusted her enough to go from long hair to a short bob.

I am impressed how she keeps notes about each haircut, so she knows how it was cut the last time. She is a super professional stylist and a great person to chat with every 6 weeks!

I always get, "Your haircut is really cute! Where'd you get it done?" from my BFF Joey. She has been cutting my hair now for almost 2 years. She is the honest to goodness BEST out there. I refer all my friends to her. My cousin just got her hair done by Joey and it is soooo cute!

Joey has this amazing ability to see the future. You can tell her what you want and she'll be able to tell you if it'll work or not. She actually takes time to find a look that will work for you. When I chopped off all my hair and got an A-line cut, everyone was asking me who did it. Go to her! She'll be your new BFF..

Joey is amazing!   I've been going to her for my hair exclusively for over a year.  I wouldn't go to anyone else.

She's great with color and style.  She's so nice and very talented.  I told her I was allergic to sulfates and she even has sulfate free products.  If you need a cut and color, go see her!!!

One of my biggest regrets:  discovering Joey right about the time I decided to leave San Francisco.

I had gone to so many places and spent an arm and a leg on a basic cut and then I walked into see Joey on a whim and I just knew she was gonna GET me.  Seriously, best and nicest lady and she doesn't just pretend to listen but actually does!!

Everything she's done to my hair has always grown out fabulously and I actually haven't had it touched since I've moved back in fear of not getting styled as well.

I mean, I suppose I could always fly out from DC to SF just for a hair cut but that would sort of defeat the excellent prices that Joey offers for her awesome services.

I miss her!

Okay, so I know I can be kind of five star happy.  like, "dude in starbucks looked like Gavin but without the hair gel -- five stars!" but seriously?  Nothing about Joey doesn't get five stars.  From, like, the awesome music playing to the banter about Michigan Womyn's Festival to -- most importantly -- *my totally awesome hair.*

You might not know this if you don't have totally perfectly straight hair, but if you do have totally perfectly straight hair then the person who does your hair needs to be a perfectionist.  Frankly, curly hair girls, I'm tired of hearing you complain about how hard it is for you to find someone who can cut your hair.  If one little hair is cut wrong on my head you can tell from a mile a way.  Its like there's a fog horn on my shoulder calling out 'bad hair cut here, bad hair cut here....'

But Joey's hair cuts are so perfect that little girls on the bus ask if they can touch my hair and old queens ask if its a wig.  And I'm totally into that.   Cause you know what?...  Its not a wig!  Its my perfect hair cut!  And Joey is the only person who's ever been able to do it!

After years of growing up in New Jersey and leaving the salon with feathered hair and wisky bangs- I finally packed my bags and walked out west.  Yes, I walked.  My hair was a shambles for so long.  I heard about this fantastic stylist in San Francisco- so I had to see for myself.

Upon walking into the salon- I instantly fell in love.  Joey cut my hair like no other and rid me of the feather'd hair.  Its one of the most beautiful cuts I've ever had.  I feel refreshed and happy and can walk down the street with confidence.

I was on my walk back to New Jersey, but I had to return to San Francisco because I didn't have the heart to leave Joey.

With all seriousness, Joey is a fantastic stylist.  She is not afraid to try new things and is open to new ideas.

Besides, with the talent she has and the price.. you really can't go wrong.

Joey- can't wait to see you at my next cut!

Everyone else.. go call Joey!

Joey is an honest to goodness authentic and unique individual who loves what she does -- amazingly refreshing.  Unlike a lot of salon experiences, there is not one bit of pretension here.  It's like going to see a trusted friend who is dedicated to helping you better your hair situation.  I saw her ad in Bitch magazine a few years ago and have been going to her for cuts ever since.

Hey Gals and Guys!

A friend of mine recommended Joey when I asked her about hair salons in SF (thanks, Dao!).  I really liked her haircut and have never had much luck finding hair stylists that I would stick with.  So I followed my friend's advice and saw Joey.

Things I Loved about Joey:
1. The cut she gave me was totally original and fun.  It even looked great a month later!
2. She has great ideas even if you don't have a Clue what you want to do with your hair. She knows her stuff.
3. The highlights she added were flawless - great coloring technique.
4.  She was detail oriented and attentive
5. She used great products and high quality color
6.  She is located in the heart of Castro - so you can grab some yummy food afterwards and enjoy some "Oohs and Aahs" as you are walking around with your glorious hair!
7.  There is an ATM machine right downstairs from the salon if you are short on cash
8. I walked out with a fun haircut and great color and did not have to take out a second mortgage to pay for it !!

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

this is a repost of the review I originally wrote Joey in Sept.07 on the Notorious page.  all of it is still true, true, true.

JOEY!  JOEY!  JOEY!

seriously the best hair cut i have had in my 30+ years.

I'm always really nervous about letting anyone do anything to my hair.  And I am fickle when it comes to hairdressers.  Not any more...  Joey Stevenson does good hair and I am hooked.  I have her highlight and cut my hair every 9 weeks.  She keeps good records so neither of us have to guess what worked so well last time.  She's honest, down to earth, fun to talk to, and lovely.

reasons to see Joey:
*skilled, seriously skilled
*honest
*easy to talk to
*affordable
*centrally located

When I told a well-known Berkeley stylist that I wanted the short look with long hair, he told me he wants to eat pie and lose weight, but we can't all have what we want. Well, when I went to Joey, she made it happen and more. She understood what it's like to grow long hair for years and not feel like letting it go, and didn't chop off too much. She gave me the best cut I've ever had, a rockin euro-mullet that still lets me show off my long hair when I want to. Last Saturday I pinned up the long parts and went short for the night. The look is so versatile, Joey was the perfect person to do it and she really enjoyed doing it.

I went back a week later for purple streaks, and they look great. I didn't think I could feel any better about my hair. I'm never going to anyone else again! I also really appreciate Notorious' reasonable prices. It's nice not to have to pay $70 for a good haircut.

The Berkeley stylist was wrong, you can eat pie every day and not get fat! Joey is proof.

joey totally rocks. i've had many a hairdresser, but she takes the cake. and believe me, i don't give out cake to just anyone, i usually eat it all myself. i hate it when you go to a salon and the person cutting your hair doesn't listen to a word you have to say. this is definitely not the case with joey, she listens. but if you need guidance, she can help there, too. once we had established what i wanted out of my haircut, joey took notes, which she references whenever i come in. i love this. before i found joey i was going to another hairdresser who never quite seemed to remember me or what my haircut was supposed to be. thanks to joey and her notecards, those days are over! and i know she has range b/c she cuts my girlfriend's hair which is super super short - completely opposite my long, thick locks. also, joey is really funny and totally somebody you can see yourself hanging out with, which is always a nice bonus when you sit down in a chair and let somebody get close to your head with sharp implements like razors and scissors.

my friend gina convinced me to go to joey firstly because she said joey, unlike most hairstylists i've been to, won't take off too much length if you tell her not to and secondly cause of gina's very cute cut... i checked out yelp and was further convinced by everybody's reviews, all of which i confirm now: good music, good price, great girl, and most importantly: my favorite haircut to date! i went in there debating between rounded out bangs or side sweepy ones. joey was excited about the first idea and then came up with an exciting addition by giving me a poof in the back, à la brigitte bardot. when she said that, i knew we were on the same page. to sum it up: joey talked me through the whole thing, so i wouldn't worry about the longer pieces falling to the floor. my hair looks healthier without losing too much length. i loved the cut right away (a rarity for me) and i've washed it since and blow dried the bangs (me, miss low maintenance can at least do that) and i still love it! to repeat a previous review, my only regret is that i heard about joey right before i leave sf (although i do have an apt scheduled days before i move away)
