Review from Raj K.
Huntington Beach, CA
I was in town for a few days and wanted a good slice before I left. I'll admit, it's "touristy" notoriety (As seen in the movie "Spiderman") alerted my spidey senses that this could be overrated. But, I was pleased to find a really good slice with a crust that's got just a little bit of tang to it (I swear it's gotta be the water).
I did luck out and get there just moments before a big tour group came in and crowded up the joint. But from the looks of it, a few tour groups come in throughout the day. -

So I don't get the exact hype about NY pizza, but since I was wandering the NYU area, I stepped in to check out a slice since I've heard of this place so many times.
It was not bad, not amazing good like most people make it out to be on TV...but the thin crust was good enough to fold, but besides that...meh, just a regular ol' slice of pepperoni pie to me.
But hey, it made my criteria of a NY slice of pizza. I was amazed how hard it was to find actual slices of NY pizza, but this one makes the cut.
Is it worth the line? Ehhh...not so much, but for the price, it will help a NYU student out anytime. -

Standard Pizza at a cheap price!
Thin crust, run-of-the-mill pizza. Good if you want a quick snack, but if you want something more tasty (but way more expensive) hit up luzzos! Or if you want something more filling and heavenly, hit up gruppos!
If ya haven't noticed, luzzos and gruppos are my two favorite pizza joints.. the former for its heavenly light/then crust, and the latter for its solid ingredients.
Sorry Joe's, I didn't mean to use your review as a plug for luzzos and gruppos, but every thin crust pizza i eat must be compared it these two.
BUT, for a cheap, quick n easy pick-me-up, Joe's slices ain't too shabby! -
Review from Mike K.
Joe's is not only a neighborhood institution but also something of a city-wide one. Take a straw poll of New Yorkers' favorite pizza places around the office and Joe's will turn up at least once, if not twice or more.
I wouldn't go that far, but Joe's makes a solid slice of pizza. The crust is thin, but foldable (+), but lacks a distinct flavor (-). There isn't anything tantalizing about the sauce or the cheese, but they have the proportions right and they taste right.
It's a little pricier than what I'd like to pay for a quick slice, but it's alright.
Gotta go to Joe's! [if you're in the west village, at least] -

I went today for the first time after passing in front of Joe's Pizza a million times. Now I can see why this place is so popular. I got a plain slice of pizza and it was perfect! I loved how cheesy the pizza is.

As a rule of thumb, drunk eating should be the best eating, shouldn't it? I was feeling pretty buzzed and the slice I gobbled down from another pizza joint down the street didn't give me that expanded feeling I was looking for. I walked by Joe's en route to the subway station and grabbed a slice to fully stretch my belly. Even in my buzzness, I thought the slice was "meh" at best. They didn't heat it up, but good slices can be consumed cold...not this one though. The sauce was bland. I drenched it with seasonings, but it still didn't make it a slice worth coming back for.

The Original on the corner of Carmine & Bleeker was the bomb.
Something is amiss since they moved.
But at 4 AM, who am I to judge. -

My favorite pizza in new York city. Nothing fabulous .or I should say nothing fancy.
But - you always get a quality - fresh - good slice.
A bit pricey for pizza - but , hey , if it's good , then indulge.your in ny!! -

a friend/co-worker introduced me to this place a few months ago. I'm surprised I didn't know about it sooner. I do love my pizza.
It's a pretty basic slice, especially compared to some of the other, fancier pizza places in the area. Everything it does have though, it nails pretty perfectly.
Decently priced, open late. I recommend you eat it all of the time. -

What can I say about Joes that has not already been said a million times. I have been going here for over 15 years and it still remains one of my favs. Fresh mozzarella is the way to go.

Review from Jimmy M.
This place is decent for NY pizza, but I think the flavor lacks a bit. It's open late which is great.
Definitely overrated though... -
Review from Jenny S.
the pizza here is better than Lombardi's! a solid, cheap, chewy thin crust pizza you can order by the slice (from the pizza joint as seen in Spiderman the movie)
THANK YOU SCOUTMOB for a free slice of cheese pizza from Joe's
HOWEVER it's no where near the godly thin crust or quality ingredients of Luzzo's or Pizza Gruppo
NOTE: the shop is SMALL w/ little counter space to eat PLUS maybe one table inside & one outside (this is why i always see people eating pizza while walking down the streets of Manhattan)Listed in: NYC PIZZA ADVENTURES

Always good for a slice of pizza. It's best late at night (past 12:00 am). They have a couple of cheese pies ready to go....and will throw on whatever toppings you want before warming them up.

The goal was to find the best New York pizza even though I've never had a NY pizza. So here is my 100% unofficial NY pizza challenge. Here's the problem. I can't cover all of NY in one night. So I had to pick a neighborhood with the highest concentration of highly-rated pizza places. Online searches directed me to the West Village. I hit Joe's, Bleecker Street, and John's all within one hour on one night. Unlike native New Yorkers, my results are not skewed by childhood favorites, historical price, or poor late night drunken memories.
I had a $2.75 basic slice. The key word is basic. I understand that simple can be beautiful, but when there are only three key elements, each part must be perfect. So it's a problem having the cheese slide off the pizza because there was too much sauce and because I folded it like a real New Yorker. It's also a problem when the crust is too dry - particularly on a rainy wet evening where there was so much moisture in the air. Ultimately, Joe's finished second among the three places.
This is not a sit down restaurant, but there is a small area with bar stools and table tops to eat a slice. On a Tuesday evening, they were selling pizza at a quick rate so hot pies were continually coming out of the oven so there was little chance of getting a stale serving. -

If you're looking for the quintessential New York pizza joint, look no farther than Joe's. It's true thin-crust, new york pizza. Fold and devour. $2.75 is the going rate for a cheese slice, and it's worth it. Forget the 99 cent places you see on the walk there. When you're done, go around the corner to Rocco's for a cannoli or other old-world Italian pastry.

Had the pepperoni and fresh mozerella with a mexican coke and it was glorious. Joe, the owner, was there at 5am serving the people with a smile. Great guy. He even took a picture with me no questions asked. This is exactly the kind of place that deserves to get my money =)

One of the best slices in the area, A GO TO spot for a 3AM fix of pizza. One of the best Sicilian slices i have had. There is a reason why the line is always out of the door.
If only the employees had some personality I would give them 5 stars. -
Review from Talia R.
I've been eating slices at joe's many a year. always reliable & price increase has been manageable - I think it was $2 when I moved here & now $2.75. one thing I'm pretty over is the attitude of the staff & how they kind of throw my precious slice of pizza at me in a fit of rage. dude really doesn't like his job, i get it. i want to scream 'but i'm not a tourist, i live here, be decent to me,' and then i think, why should i be alright when them giving the tourist clientele less-than-stellar treatment? shame on them & shame on me!
rant over, nom nom, slice are cheesy & delicious. -
Review from Derik R.
Santa Ana, CA
Love this place, every time we are in the city this is one of the places we always go. A quintessential slice of NYC pizza.
The crust has a great bite and a good chew, the sauce is light with a nice acidity to it, the salt from the cheese is great, really heightens the flavor of all the other components. Personally I like the mozzarella pizza better, but they are all good. -
Review from Mike C.
You get the convenience of ordering a slice right there, no waiting. Finally got to order some "NY style pizza" and this place was one of the few that was recommended to me.
Not bad for $2.75 slice of cheese or $3.50 for a slice of pepperoni. A quick turn in the oven makes this slice a pretty good thing especially whilst walking around in NYC. You definitely need this to get you that energy for more walking. -

It's aiite.
It ain't Grimaldi's. Maybe it was an off night, or maybe I don't know real pizza.
I thought the crust was great, super thin, with some give to it, and it was super chewy.
I wish there was more sauce and cheese on the slices. -
Review from B. T.
San Francisco, CA
The absolute top rung of New York pizza places, in Manhattan anyway, do not offer slices--they sell only whole pies. If you are in Manhattan, alone and hungry for pizza, it's arguable (and when the subject is pizza there will be arguments) you won't do better than Joe's which does sell slices--in fact that's mostly what they sell out of their hole in the wall with only a few stools to sit on. The topping options are also pretty limited, but do yourself a favor and just get plain tomato and cheese, preferably hot from the oven, with the perfect amount of both tomato and cheese, and a sublimely thin crust. Those black charred areas of crust and cheese are the mark of "real New York pizza", cooked in a very hot oven.

Review from Sandee L.
Maybe it's that I'm a non-native New Yorker and just don't know an authentic slice of pie when I eat one, or this pizza is extremely overhyped.
I was in the 'hood and came to claim my free slice of pie (cheese pizza) via Scoutmob (valid thru 11/6). Normally, it's $2.75. To me, it wasn't anything special. Kinda crunchy on the bottom after they toast it in the oven upon order, with a slightly tangy tomato sauce and cheese.
Sorry, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here again. -
Review from Lili K.
This place is where the celebs are at (multiple photos of Neil Patrick Harris, a Kardashian, John Stamos etc...and Spiderman was filmed here. But the pizza was just ok. It had some crispiness to it, and there's a lot to chew, but it wasn't piping hot, it lacked cheeese and sauce, etc.
The venue is nothing to brag about, either. As everyone else states, it's just a place to grab a slice when you're hungry late at night/can't tell what's really good/not.
People were nice, but the food was just not up to par. -
Review from Michelle M.
Manhattan, NY
Redeemed the limited time only Scout mob offer (1 free cheese slice). I really love the crispiness of the bottom of the pizza. It's very hard to find a mom & pop pizza joint that makes good pizza. A plain slice is $2.75 and I'd say it's the usual pricing. The seating kinda sucks though because it's pretty limited, but I think it's great on the go.
I would come back for a slice or two. Y not? -
Review from Louis R.
F John's tourist trap pizza.
F Original/Famous blahblahblah's pizza...and blahblahblah's famous/original pizza.
This IS the pizza spot.
I've been coming here for fresh mozzarella slices for about 10 years...and I ain't neva goin to crooklyn for that Grimaldi's shiz. You can keep that shiz to yourselves, you poor, grimey hipsters. -
Review from Kazu O.
This is what I was expecting from NY pizza! It looks like a hole-in-the-wall joint, but they sure do serve quality slices. The nice char on the bottom of the slices added a unique flavor. The crust was crispy, yet still had a softness to it. The fresh mozzarella that they add on top just enhances the flavor and texture.
I'm having a hard time deciding whether I liked the pizza here better, or the surprise contender, Bravo Pizza. However, all I know is.. I went back for a second slice. No joke. -

YUMMY!! We had a slice of the cheese pizza, so flavorful. They use san marzano tomatoes that they crush and put right on the pizza and they use a low moisture mozzarella, you can tell they use quality ingredients.
They have a wall with pics of all kinds of celebrities that have visited this joint. -
Review from Anna K.
New Yorker voted #1 pizza.
sauce - more tomato taste, not as salty, slightly sweet
crust - chewier, translates to foldable slice
temperature - not as hot out of the oven
space - more outdoor seating
price - $2.75/slice

This was a really good slice of obviously authentic New York pizza pie. I was there early on a Saturday night and the line was reasonable. Not sure if the selection is a little more robust when they are slower, but they were only slinging out cheese and cheese (okay the second cheese was the fresh mozz version). Perfect crust, great sauce, and just the right amount of cheese.

Went to the quintecesstial pizza joint in NYC. Greasy slices. Salty aroma. Just the right amount of hole in the wall decor that makes this place a knockout place to get a slice.

Review from Phil H.
A couple bucks a slice and fills your belly after a night of bar hopping. Just a good New York style pizza joint. Slices are fresh, with a nice mix of cheese and sweet enough sauce. Place itself is small with no real seating. So basically it's a good grab and go drunkie meal late night hit-up spot. Or a quickie stop for a cheap pizza lunch.
Nothing more, nothing less. Many other pizza joints in town with just as good or even better pizza. Had a regular slice there last night and it tasted pretty much the same as the thousands of other slices I have had over the time I have lived in the city.
Yes, supposedly there have been celebrity sightings here, and there are some pics on the wall, but don't belive the hype. It's just ok. A little better when drunk too!Listed in: Pizza in my mouth! Shove it…, Over-hyped!

Joe's serves slices of real pizza. The crust is thin and the slices are big enough to fold. But what is the all the hype about? GQ listed Joe's as one of the best pies in the country. I'd go back if I was in the area but would not travel across town for Joe's. Still worthy of four stars for the crust.

Amazing pizza! And this is coming from someone who usually hates pizza. I had a slice on Saturday night after already finishing dinner somewhere else. When the food tastes good when you're not even hungry--you know it's good.
I came back again last night. I hopped on the subway at 2 am-- grabbed a slice of fresh mozzarella-- and walked back to the subway. As my train arrived, I realized I wanted another piece so I walked back out of the subway and went up and got another slice. lol. Yes, it's that good. -

Astoria, NY
A pleasant tomato after-taste that lingered on top of the tongue, chewy hot cheese, crispy crust and overall freshness distinguished this pizza (only $2.75) from the others. Each slice was small enough to be within most budgeted calorie-counts, yet they were unusually satisfying. There were also several containers of, what is, the most effective crushed red pepper lying around on various tabletops in their small disposable containers, which assures freshness.
