I was impressed! We went on a weekend night and ordered the steam pots which were delicious. Everything was the perfect temperature and the waiter was very nice. We asked to sit outside because we wanted a view of the water, but the outside seats were full. They did a good job putting us at a window seat inside, so I didn't mind. My boyfriend and I then walked around the pier afterward which was a cool way to end the dinner. Nice location, Joe's!
The only 2 things I didn't like were 1. We did wait awhile for our food and didn't know why because the restaurant was only crowded outside and 2. There was this really weird kid that kept walking past our table and staring at me. I have no idea if he worked there or was a visitor because he didn't wear a uniform but I never saw him actually sit at a table. Strange. Was a little freaked out.
The Waterside in downtown Norfolk borders Town Point Park, the Elizabeth River and the Norfolk business district. While the building is still in good shape, the offerings have dimmed, grayed, and disappeared over the years.
One of our favorite places to go here is Joe's! Yes, it's a chain, but a really good one! Recently took family there visiting from our of town (non-seafood areas of the country), and they were extremely pleased with the service, selection and price. The setting is beautiful, too, especially when seated outside.
Several of us had their buckets of crab. YUMMY! And, we can walk there whenever we want.
After I had the combo; crap, shimp, sausage, 1/2 corn of the cob and a few small potatoes.........I was still hungry even after the bill! Oh well, we live and learn.
I know, I know - this is a chain and all but for some reason every time I am down in Norfolk I end up here and have 1) a great meal and 2) a damn good time.
The wait staff is always johnny-on-the-spot and the food is usually very good.

There is an out door deck on the Elizabeth River but to be honest, views of the Newport News shipyards don't really cut it for me.
The most lousy seafood restaurant. The seafood menu was very limited and the prices were crazy. Almost everything were fried, which is a big disappointment to the true seafood lovers. I grew up on the seafoods and I can't believe that this seafood restaurant is one of the most popular chains. Please stick to the local seafood restaurants. The family owned restaurants serve the best seafoods, trust me on this one!
I gave this restaurant two stars for its location - right next to the pier on the Waterside and it is a good place to chill for a drink and a view of the fireworks on the Fourth of July.
I work across the street so went for lunch one day with a friend. The service was horrible and our food was cold. I don't usually say anything but our experience was so terrible I complained to the manager and he gave us 1/2 off our bill.

I went to the waterside location once for lunch with some co-workers. Joe's would probably have to do when your seafood options are limited. However, this is Norfolk, the ocean is 20 minutes away and there are a zillion places that have better prices, better quality and even better views.
Only ate at Joe's because we took the ferry over from Portsmouth and it was the only kid-friendly restaurant in the area. Kids area is great! they have their own contained play area...everything else about Joe's-not so much. I ordered some type of blackened fish sammie and it was blech. no flavor what-so-ever. My friend ordered the chicken sandwich...same deal. It was supposed to come with avocado but none in there. When we asked the waitress, she said, yeah it is supposed to come with avocado but none of the avocados we have are ripe enough. Wish we would have known that when we ordered it. I also ordered some apple sauce for my 9 month old and out came a Mott's single serve package...no problem...except when I saw it on our bill, it was almost $3 for that! I can buy a whole 6-pack at the store for that price. Unfortunately, applesauce wasn't the only thing overpriced at Joe's. So NOT worth a trip there, even for the playground.
