I travel to San Francisco each year, and I'd heard about Joe's through his partners excellent blog, Dogpoet.  (read it)
I made an appointment online from Scotland which was a care free process, and I turned up on the day.
Joe was at the ready, and he asked what I was after. I gave him minimal instruction, preferring his advice. He began.
Okay, so I have to say, the guy gave me the best haircut I've had in 20 years. And I'm a hairdresser. But that's not all. His chat was good, the shop and all of the guys are so cool, I am in love with this place!
I'm, like late 40ish. I've had a lot of haircuts. This is the best one I've had in years, but the best part of it was-  Joe Gallagher is a lovely man, in every way. Go. Just go.

3 out of 4 awesome haircuts!  I've had three great cuts from Joe's and one okay haircut.  Overall I'd say this is my new favorite place to get my haircut.  It's kind of drive for me, but honestly it's worth the miles to know I'm going to get a business professional style cut.  I'm sad that Samantha isn't there anymore, but everyone at this place is always really friendly and they offer a good haircut that won't empty your wallet.

Going to a new barber can always be a little nerve-wracking, you never know how it's going to turn out. I went to Joe's for the first time from the recommendation of a coworker and have been satisfied every time. Basil can tell exactly what I want done to my hair and it turns out just how I want it. The quality and price ($25+tip) are unbeatable and it's refreshing to avoid all the pretentiousness that comes with many hair salons.

I'm the kind of guy who likes to get a haircut right away when I'm feeling the need. I hate to have to make an appointment  days in advance, so on the positive side, you can always walk in anytime and get a cut here without a long wait. This place is definitely a Barber Shop and not a salon. No one's ever asked if I want my hair washed, I've never gotten blow dried afterward, no styling was done & no products were ever put in my hair to make it look polished. Just a basic cut at $25 +tip.

I've been here 4 times and have had 4 different barbers.  The problem is that everyone here rents their chairs and works different days and different hours, Each time I walked in the guy who cut my hair before wasn't working, so I had to try who ever was available.

The guys here have always been really friendly, but  his place is difficult to review as a whole because actually each barber rents a chair and does his own thing. Because of that, I question the skill level and commitment of some of the guys. Some of the barbers only work here 1 or 2 days a week and I get the feeling they're just here to  get you cut and get paid. I've gotten 2 pretty good cuts here and 2 real disasters.

Each time I've been here, I brought a picture of what i want and described problem areas in my hair and each time I walked out of here with a COMPLETELY different haircut from the picture I started with. These guys really do like to shave, buzz and cut SHORT! This is Clipper City. That's not a problem for me and 2 times I ended up with a nice even cut that grew out well. 2 other times, not so great

For example, I got my hair cut here 2 weeks ago and the sides were literally Whitewalled. I do like my hair on the shorter side, but I'm not in the military. When he was through I resembled Jake Gyllenhaal in Jarhead! Now as it's growing out I've got areas that are sticking up, parts are block cut , strangely angled and won't blend together. I seriously have to use a ton of pomade and hairspray just to get it to lie flat and it looks uneven.  I had been specifically clear that the back of my hair would stick straight up if cut too short and still I walked out with an Alfalfa. Unfortunately, it's still too short to get fixed, so I'll have to deal with it for a few more weeks at least. Ugh!

I just think some of  the guys here are used to giving a certain type of Castro cut (short military style) and sort of forget about what the client might want.

I guess if you have a good experience here you should take the time to make an appointment and stick with that barber. (Kind of defeats the purpose of the walk in though.)  Otherwise, it's a gamble...

I will come back to this barbershop because I was recommended by a friend and so I would give it a second chance regardless.

Came in with a bit of an emergency situation; my shaggy-cute 8-year-old got fed up with his bangs and tried to solve the problem on his own, resulting in an unfortunate bang situation. He ended up with a buzz cut, which, incidentally he loves. The barber (I didn't get his name; I had made an appointment with Mike the night before online but I guess he was busy) really took care with my son and did a really great job. I especially liked the baby powder brush down at the end.

I did feel a little uncomfortable with the amount of erotica that was on the walls at the different stations (not our barber's station). My five year old was checking some stuff out and it was definitely not even PG-13. I happen to think that this is part of what makes SF great, but it actually would have been nice to get a heads up ahead of time that there is an illustration of a man with an erect penis at child-eye level. Right, it's the Castro, I get it; and a heads up would have let us feel more welcome.

I usually go to a different Castro barbershop, but my favorite guy wasn't working on Monday so I thought I'd try the place my friends have been raving about - Joe's.
Even as a walk-in I only had to wait about 5 minutes before Sean was free and invited me into his chair.  Sean was super-friendly and went out of his way to find common ground with me so we could have a nice conversation.  Now, I'm not really one to love conversation in my haircut, but Sean made it pretty natural.  He cut my hair in less than 20 minutes - exactly the way I wanted it.
    Thanks Sean!

PS - I would have given you 5 stars, except it's hard to beat my usual guy's scalp massage.

Amazing! Joe knows his stuff and is very good. You have to work your way into his schedule (I highly recommend making an appointment online) but he is very much worth it.

I've also been cut by Mike M who is amazing as well. Total perfectionist at getting the fade right.

For walk ins, Sean is the best. Great convo with him too if you're so inclined.

There I was, needing a haircut. As a straight guy who looks like as much like a bear as possible without actually being one, I usually DIY it... #2 on the head, #2 on the beard. done. but every once and a while, I either don't have time or am just too plain lazy. So to yelp I went... I live near the Castro, so it seemed like the logical place to look as a dude needing a simple haircut and beard trim. Enter Joe's barbershop. walked in, put my name on the list, and in 5 minutes was getting my cut. In 20 minutes I was out the door. They have a special "1 blade" price of $15, and a secondary special of $5 beard trim with haircut ($10 without). Out the door looking much more civilized for $20 +tip. I got Basil. he was pro and fast and friendly. I'll definitely be back!

The best barbershop I've visited.  I've been here about a dozen times since I've moved to San Francisco, all walk-ins with four or five different barbers.  My haircuts were consistently good, and occasionally great -- really, that's all that I can ask for.

Cuts are $25, which are steep for a barbershop, but for the quality of the cut you're getting a good deal.

I usually come in right before the lunch hour, and I only have to wait a few minutes to get a haircut.

    1. Mark Denton - Awesome!  5 stars!
    2. Joe the Owner - first class a**hole!

The place is great - clean, talented barbers, never a long wait - but twice now, I've been disrespected completely as a customer by Joe, who cuts at the first chair (and also serves as guard dog).
I brought my front bike wheel in, as it doesn't fit in my lock, set it down against the wall  to sign in, and Joe disdainfully says (loudly, so everyone in the place can hear), "Put that in the backyard so no one trips over it" - and turns back to his client, slowly, shaking his head like I'm some twit who oughta know better...who trips over bike wheels leaning against a fricking wall?  Bite me, Joe!  Hope you get run over by a bike!

Every time you move to a new city, there are few things you need to find:

    1. A reasonable mechanic
    2. A good barber*
    3. A place to live, friends, blah blah blah, whatever

Anyway, I used to go to a barber in Palo Alto who would always cut a lot more hair off the left side of my head than the right. It was like she wanted to make room to showcase my left ear to the world.

I actually got to Joe's through Yelp, and I drive 1.5 hours round trip to keep going back. My barber, Joshua, is essentially an artist who chose hair as his medium. He can do anything you want, or he can figure out something that will look good. It costs $25, but take it from someone who shops at the Gap: it's worth the money.

Boy I wanted to like this place. It's a great, spacious storefront right on a well-traveled stretch of Market, and their web site seemed to encourage walk-ins, so I thought I'd swing by for an afternoon trim. It was surprisingly busy with most staff already at work, so I got the one guy left over. Maybe the other guys are better, but mine ignored what I asked for and gave me a pretty bad haircut. I hate the Castro clone/military look and asked just for a trim for my shaggy do, but next thing I know the guy has the clippers out and has pretty much shaved the side of my head. So now it's all gotta go, and I look like I'm a fresh-faced recruit.

The worst thing was, I have a crazy cowlick in the back that makes my hair line goofy and gives me a naturally-occurring ugly off-center tail, and I made mention multiple times that he'd need to do some trickery back there to make it look even. When he finishes he turns me around, and it's like the tail had been *emphasized*, poking out like I'm in the Thompson Twins. I asked for him to even it out and he did, but seriously, were you listening?

Again, since I'm not really into the lets-pretend-we're-in-the-army look, maybe I'm going to the wrong spot, but I thought maybe they could pull off a normal trim for a gay dude who's living in 2010 and not 1977. Probably won't go back.

So if I spent any more time next door at Lucky 13 I'd start having my mail forwarded there.  Because of this, I've walked past Joe's a million times before and noticed guys getting their haircut at really convenient times.  My current barber is a pain in the ass to get an appointment with, is only open till 5, and does an average at best job, so I've been in the market for a new one.

Well after a couple Bulleits at 13, I decided I needed a haircut, and walked into Joe's.  Yes, this place does have a strong "bear" vibe to it, but honestly I couldn't care less as long as I get a decent haircut.  I'll also add that it turns out that straight hair cuts exactly the same as gay hair, so to any other straight guys reading this, don't be afraid of this place.   Anyway, I was greeted at the door by a cheerful guy who I'm assuming is Joe, and within 5 minutes or so the barber who I believe was named Sean was cutting my hair.  He was quite personable and really communicated with me about what I was looking for, and made sure everything was done exactly as I wished.  As far as I'm concerned, the $25 (before tip) price was a great bargain, and I couldn't be happier with my haircut.  I'll be a regular customer from now on for sure.

    Mixed feelings about this place.
Granted I did walk in and barely had to wait...the guy that cut my hair was a bit of a drudge.  Not sure if he was stoned off of hair spray, a brain injury survivor or just inexperienced..but the cut wasn't quite what i asked for...and he handled my head like it was a bladder on the end of a stick...i kept wanting to remind him my head was attached to my neck, and probably wont come off no matter how much he pull on it....but i figured they covered that in Chapter one in Beautician school.
Then as he is raping my hair with his clippers..hair keeps falling in my face (I HATE THIS FEELING!!!)
I haven't had that much hair in my mouth since......Wellllllll.... thats a different Yelp review!

    So, $25 bucks...plus a $5 tip (yeah, i tipped, i am not a complete ass!)...hardly barbershop fees....

Anyway...lesson learned...will stick with my normal do do'er.

These reviews totally give the wrong impression.  As a straight dude, there are barber shops where I'm not welcome - like Male Image on Market.  That is not the case at Joe's.  Yeah, most of the guys there are gay, but this is a business, not the friggin' Folsom Street Fair.

Besides, in this day and age, a straight dude wants a gay dude in charge of his hair.  As Dan Savage noted, a gay guy can pretend to be straight by getting Dockers, an expired gym membership and a bad haircut.  Don't be that guy - and don't listen to these stupid comments about leather and muscles...But be careful - they will cut your hair way short, just like they like it - not like your girlfriend likes it...

Me & my Jewfro grew up on Long Island. As such, I grew up with my mother schlepping me to salons, rather than barbers, for maintenance on said Jewfro.

In my mid 20s, I started having my hair cut short so that if you didn't know I had curly hair you could no longer tell. But, I kept going to salons.

Until recently, I was paying $40 + $10 tip for a good haircut with a good stylist. Then, he told me he was moving to a new salon and that his prices were going up to $45. So, now I'd be at $45+$10 tip=$55 every 3.5 weeks. So, at about 14 haircuts a year, I'd be spending $770 a year on my almost nonexistent head of hair. Time to economize!

So, I started coming to see Jeff. Jeff's great. And, most importantly his haircuts are consistent. And only $25 (37.5% less than I was paying). I give him a $7 tip. So $32x14=$448. So, I'm saving $322 a year over what I would've been spending at my old stylist's new salon. And, Jeff cuts my hair 15 minutes faster. All around great savings in tough economic times!

    Absolutely fantastic.

I was a walk-in client the other night and waited only 5 minutes to get my haircut. Sean, my barber, was personable and did a fantastic job.

The atmosphere at Joe's is certainly different than a "traditional" barbershop, but that's part of what makes this place unique. This is a great place to go for interesting, insightful conversation, as well as a great haircut.

Price of the basic cut was $25, $30 with tip. You'll pay a bit more than you might at other places, but I guarantee that it's worth it.

Probably the best Barbershop in the neighborhood.  I have tried a few and while my cuts where good, the station side manner of some is a turn off.  As if I was inconveniencing them as a walk-in.  Not here!   I did not have an appointment but was immediantely seen by Mark D.  I asked for and got exactly what I needed and wanted.  While $30 (including gratuity) may be a tad steep, I felt it was worth it for not only a sharp cut but a pleasant experience.  Thank you and see you again in about 5 weeks!  Joshua W.

These guys are great. I have curly thick Jew-fro, so in the past I've had to pay $50+ for getting a decent haircut, which always left me feeling like I had just squandered a chunk of change
Anyway, under some self-enforced frugality, I decided to give this place a try. Turns out it was a great move!
My barber was Mike, I showed him a picture of what I wanted to do, and he got right to work on it, and did a great job. I will definitely be a repeat customer!

One note: Bring something to read if you are going to do a drop-in instead of scheduling online. About the only options to read while waiting there is high-brow Bear porn. Not exactly The New Yorker.

Where do you take your serious barber fantasies? Joe's Barbershop. Clean, efficient and super friendly. Mike McGinty took my dear friend Dan (with dog Lola) in for a cut as a walk in.  Nice to have a snarly hot barber, but then to stumble upon a VERY hardcore and hot mag with a broad range of Fetish/S&M/B&D/Electro I knew I was in the right place.

As Dan continued to fire off his witty repartee, I indulged my photogog finger with snapped shots of the space, the barber & Dan and even Lola at his feet.

Fun, fresh and fully of testosterone this place reeked Castro - in the best way possible.  Living in very straight OC, it was a joy to be in such an affirming, unpretentious space.  I would almost take a JetBlue (out of Long Beach of course!) flight to get my haircut here.

Work it boys and men. This place is where we ALL should go for just "a bit off the top" - God, I love double entendres. Don't you?

I went to Joe's and Mark gave me an awesome cut that totally fixes everything.

OK, so as mentioned in a previous review, I hate moving to a new city for two reasons: 1. Needing to find a new good barber, and 2. Needing to find a new good doctor. As luck would have it, I located both on the same day.

Without knowing that appointments were almost a "must" at Joe's, I lucked out and walked in and was taken in immediately by Joe himself. I told him what I wanted, and he went right to work. While getting my buzz cut done, I took in the scenery/decor, and must say that it was pretty fucking cool. This place obviously caters to the leather scene (hot.) and it shows with the gay anime-ish cartoons on the walls, the Craftsman tool cabinets around the shop, and well, Joe himself! My haircut was great, and let me tell you, my hair ain't the easiest to cut!

So why the deduction of one tiny half star? Well, that's because maybe I'm just not used to SF pricing yet, but $25 for a buzz cut just seems so damn expensive! I'm used to my $14 buzz cuts in L.A... BUT, I know that good barbers aren't easy to come by, so it is what it is. I even made my appointment for next week already.

I just moved to the city (by car) and after 3 weeks on the road en route my hair was way too long.  That said, I was a bit intimidated by some of the Yelp reviews.  I didn't want to leave with a blatantly "gay" 'do; nor did I want to get some sort of eye-roll for wanting to stick with my pretty conventional haircut.

That was not an issue in the least.  I walked in first thing in the morning and Joe welcomed me and I took a seat in queue.  Other stylists came in and I got Mike.  Mike was polite, skilled, took the time to hear what I wanted and just got to work.  I like that in a person.  He was also really interesting to talk to.

I left feeling the wind through my hair (brr!) again.  I've gotten compliments on it from several people.  The only thing that kinda sticks was the price.  It wasn't a 17 dollar affair like other "functional" barber shops, I walked out for about 30.  On the other hand, you're not getting *just* a barber cut, you're getting some vision and interpretation, not one-size-fits-all.   This price may bother some, but it was OK by me.

Loved it. I do wish it was a bit cheaper, but that's probably because I just moved here from New Hampshire where everything is cheaper. Basil cut my hair and did a fantastic job of it. Someone else did my boyfriend's haircut and also did a fantastic job of it. I don't know his name but I do know today was his first day.

Upon finding out we were new in town, Basil excused himself for a second and grabbed us a pocket guide to all the fun gay stuff the city has to offer, which was probably the most thoughtful thing a barber's ever done for me.

I'm a big fan of this place.  The shop has a great atmosphere with quality barbers.  I usually walk in and wait for the first available barber, all of them have been great.  The place definitely has a strong "bear" vibe to it, but it ought not dissuade any straight fan of a quality haircut.  Like I said  the atmosphere is great and chill.

I have had numerous good barbers, but Joe and Michael stand out as my favorites. Both are very personable guys and good at what they do.  This is a great barbershop.

    - $25 for a haircut
    - Generally a short wait for a walk-in
    - Set appointments online

OK, how many barber shops have their own website, their own webcam, and their own t-shirts for sale? And how many barber shops can you go to and get a thorough education on all facets of BDSM, whether you ask for it or not? Joe's has become a great hang out for lots of different groups of guys, whether into leather, BDSM, bears, or just classical flat tops! Oh, yeah, there are plenty of treats for your dogs, too!

Update: of course Joe is in a new location now. Huge place. Lots of interesting furnishings. More barbers. Best of luck there Joe!

    For all walks of life.

Don't fear red banded tattoo owner nor the Craftsman tool boxes that store the barber's tools.  And no, I'm not talking about "tools" of the trade...just your regular tools of the trade.  Razors, scissors, pomades, gels, water bottles, etc..  This shop is one of a kind in the Castro.  Whether you're a Emo stylin', flat ironing Christian from Project Runway, or a fisting fanatic with a high and tight cut, you'll find the exact stylist/barber you need here.

They do a wonderful job of making you feel like you're part of the family.  Most of them require you to make an appointment, but you may be able to find a free pair of hands every now and then.  Just don't expect to get a cut the Friday before Dore Alley or Folsom Street.

Great cuts to be had here!

Joe has been cutting my hair for years, and I was so happy for him when he opened his own shop.  He's a great guy and we always have a nice visit while he gives me a haircut.

It took me a long time after moving to San Francisco to find a barber I liked and trusted.  Joe has become one of the good things about living in San Francisco.

A few times I have had others in his shop cut my hair and they have done well.  Not quite the same as Joe, of course, but I would feel comfortable having any of them cut my hair.

My most recent haircut was a walk-in, so I didn't get Joe, but I still left looking good and feeling confident after only a modest wait.

The price is reasonable compared to other barbers and a steal compared to the salon I used to go to.
