I came on a Monday. I found out that usually Joe's is not open on Monday's, but because Thanksgiving was this week Joe decided to open up. We talked about the holidays, wine, music, Italy, and the whole time I was getting a great haircut. He trimmed my beard, and gave me advice as to how I should trim it myself.
The cut did take some time, but it was because he would stop to talk, or show you something, and it was not because he was disinterested. If you are short on time I would put off your cut until you have some free time. It is worth it for the conversation, and for the great hair cut.
The cut was $15, and totally worth it. Better than Great Clips, for basically the same price.
So, for the price, the quality, and the service, I am going to Joe's for life. -

When I moved to Chicago in March, I had no luck going to a convenient loop shop. After 2 cuts with car payment prices, and lifeless barbers...I found Joe's after I picked up the Reader.
Wow was I impressed! Great prices, and more importantly they take pride in their work, while keeping you entertained. I have had my cuts done by Joe Jr. and Mike. Both are great. This place is the real deal, and you can even catch a movie while you are in the chair. Guys beware they do not perform manicures, or any other type of prissy services. If you want a great hair cut, and shave GO TO JOE'S, You will quickly break up with you last barber! -

First time I was there Mike cut my hair and it looked great. I'd go see him.
The second time I was there, I was lucky to get cut by Joe himself. It looked great. I'd go see him.
And he gave me some fresh cucumbers from his garden on my way out.
He comes from a family of farmers.
Italian farmers.
The third time I went I got cut by Joe Jr., on a Sunday afternoon. He was great. A little bit of an old school soul in the new generation. Love it.
So, I'm gonna keep getting my haircut by them. They're cool, straightforward, no nonsense and affordable.
And they have this season's produce. -

These gentlemen know what they're doing. My hair is a light blonde and very fine, so every cut shows. If you're not a really knowledgeable barber, I end up looking not-so-great. Joe Jr is the first guy I've been to in probably 7 years who has given a good all-around cut. The price is excellent and conversation down to earth as well.
I make the haul up from Little Italy just to get a trim. Well worth it.
P.S. Free street parking right out front. I've never had to park any further than across the street. -

Joe's been my barber for 30 years, and we've still got pictures of the booster seat I needed for those first few of those.
He's maintained the atmosphere and high level of service through multiple waves of change in the neighborhood. I can't say enough good things, and I'm glad to see Joe Jr building on the legacy. -
Review from Jason Z.
I popped in here for a quick beard trim, and I'm hooked. See, my wedding is coming up, and I want to make sure my beard looks nice and pretty for pictures. So I stopped by here for a test run.
I walked in, and Joe Jr put me right in the chair. He trimmed the beard with the clippers, then tipped back the seat, put on 2 hot towels and lathered up the neck and cheeks. Over the next 10 minutes he artfully took used his straight razor to clean up my neck in ways I never could by myself. He took his time, and after he was done, there was a great straight line, better than you can do with a bic and a mirror. On top of all that, the beard trim was only $15.
The place is great. It's an "old school" barber shop. It reminds me of going with my grandfather every other saturday to get his hair cut. Memories came rushing in that I didn't even know I remembered. Such a great place. See you the morning of my wedding. -

Old School, Inexpensive, Professional Hair Cut.
I grew up going to my uncle's barber shop on the East-Side, he cut hair for 40 years, until he closed the shop, it was an old school place. This is that place, where real guys go to get a real hair cut.
Now this is the story, my GIRL of all people....she hooked me up with this place. It was my b-day and she wanted to surprise me, and take me to a real barber, and have my hair cut right..I dont blame her I was way over due, for a good cut. I guess she called of all things and quizzed Joe on his place and what they do there! I can just see her now on the phone, asking all kinda questions!
So Joe gave her the breakdown on the phone...told her about the shop, everything. I can only imagine what he said after he hung up the phone...lolol. She really had no idea what or how an old school place like this works.
So we get there, walk in and the place its right out of the 70's, I know I was going to get a great cut, just based on how the shop looked and the two guys behind the chairs. All the waiting seats were full...two guys in the chairs getting cut up...place was jumpin.
I finally got in the chair, Mike the other guy working beside Joe assesses my situation, which was a month and a half over due for a cut.
He goes to work, does everything I asked him to do...worked the clippers like magic, the scissors even better.
Now this is where the true "professional" barber knows wtf he is doing...at the end of a "real" haircut, you always get latherd up and they straight razor all the edges, clean your neck up and your sideburns, Mike did it to perfection. Let them girls in the strip-mall joints try and do that!
That was the best $15 dollar haircut I ever had in the last 15 years. Thanks Joes, and my GIRL...for finding that place and hooking Me up! I'll be back. -

One of the truly old-school barbershops!
Had my first haircut here after receiving a gift certificate for a cut and shave from my aunt (1st ever gift certificate of the shop).
Can't beat the $15 for a haircut, especially since I just get a buzz. Company and conversation is always fun and pleasant. Joe, Jr is really bringing the shop into the 21st century with social media and 'Sunday Fundays'!! -

There are so many barbers around town and most of them require appointments, I was glad that Joe's Barber Shop has none of those requirements. Just come in and wait your turn, plenty of space and vintage items to look at or you just want to sit down and watch movies, just ask Joe and he will pop in any movies you like.
Joe Jr did a really good job on my haircut, I think I counted 5 different scissors he used on my hair. The price for my cut was $15 (Cash only) not too bad and guess what, no metered parking for miles.
Give Joe's a try, you won't be disappointed.Listed in: Personal Tune-ups

It's all been said so well by others that I'm cutting and pasting some of my favorite comments about Joe's, all of which are dead on:
-Joe's is the quintessential barbershop experience. A great cut, $15. They trim your neck and ears with a straight razor and hot shaving cream, which is awesome. The wait is never long, and Joe will always have a warm chair and a story for you. If you need a vaccuum cleaner or an old VHS movie he's got those too.
-The haircut was right, the price was right, and Joe and Pete made it a place that a person could feel like a regular after going there just once
-Old time barber shop vibe, ambiance like the living room of that old uncle who hasn't thrown anything out since 1968, and an excellent shave at an unbeatable price.
-Joe and his crew aren't trying to be trendy, they aren't looking to be the new hot spot. They're just very good at what they do.
-If you need a shave they use one of those super-sharp Sweeney Todd straight razors, allowing you (if you like) to contemplate death by exsanguination while getting a superior facial depilation. I enjoyed my visit and found Joe's barbers to be gracious, friendly, and expert at cutting hair.
-Look, this place is sacred. I'm not kidding...I'm telling you, this place is a real Barber Shop and you will get a real hair cut.
-It's right across the street from the Fireside Bowl in a tiny little brick building. If Wesley Willis were still alive he'd tell you to cut your mullet at Joe's.
Indeed. -

I stumbled into Joe's while on a mission to get a haircut, and am I ever glad that my usual place had a long wait. The place is tiny, but the second you walk in, you feel right at home. This is exactly how I imagine an old-school barber shop would've been in the 60s and 70s.
The decor is a mix of things hung on the wall and all sorts of old electronics and other assorted goods that Joe repairs and sells. I'm talking about the most random items in the world: CD's for a buck, cassette tapes,VHS tapes and players, and even and 8-track player and cartridges.
Joe reminds me of a good friend of mine from Queen's New York, and he is absolutely hilarious. He's a quick talker, and you've gotta be quick on your feet to catch the many little jokes he throws in. Everyone in the shop was talking and making jokes, it really was like I'd stepped into a movie.
Most importantly, the haircut: Joe knows what he's doing. He paused a couple of times along the way to show me the progress, and confirm that he was doing it the way I wanted. Attention to detail is obvious here, and its pretty awesome that they use straight razors to shave the back hairline/neck and behind the ears.
All in all, I can't imagine going anywhere else for my haircut now, and I'll probably even look forward to heading over. Not only can I get a great haircut, but an old Earth Wind & Fire cassette and an electric fan. -

Great low key place to get your hair cut. The guys that work there are easy going and are clearly well known and respected in the neighborhood. I've been there a few times since moving here and all I can say is they are going to have my business for years to come.

Really great place. I've been in Chicago for three years now trying to find a place to get my hair cut for a reasonable price. I went to Twisted Scissors for awhile and they're pretty good, but hell yeah, I found Joe's. Very amiable nice place. Very old school. Great haircut. The amount of five-stars these guys get are not a lie. Go.

Welcome to the barber shop that time forgot. You need the best of Sam Cooke on 8-Track? They got it. You need VHS copies of the Star Wars trilogy, you know, the ones before Lucas decided Han didn't shoot first? $2 a tape.
You need an excellent straight razor shave at a price that seems to have missed a decade or so of men's grooming service price inflation? Hot damn does Joe's have your back on this one. $15. FIFTEEN DOLLARS! When Joe Jr. mentioned that they would be raising the price to $20 after the new year I laughed because that's still absurdly cheap for the level of service involved.
The shave was exactly what a straight razor shave should be. I went in with a pretty good beard, so Joe took the beard down with the clippers before going to work. Two applications of hot towels to get everything nice and supple and on the surface. Warm lather gently applied to the skin. A chance to have Joe take a goofy picture of my face with 1/2 before and 1/2 after. A sure and steady hand working with a very sharp razor against my throat, never slipping despite the vigorous smack talking going back and forth between father and son as they worked on their respective clients. Cool towels and a good stinging after shave lotion.
Did I mention this was FIFTEEN DOLLARS?! I wish Yelp had the option to use 400 point Comic Sans font in a review, so I could properly emphasize this point. I've given good reviews to other barbers, and they deserved them for good work. But this was certainly every bit as good as shaves that were three times the price. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Old time barber shop vibe, ambience like the living room of that old uncle who hasn't thrown anything out since 1968, and an excellent shave at an unbeatable price. -

I doubt this shop ever loses customers to anything but geography--the only reason a person wouldn't come back is if the distance were prohibitive. After getting your haircut here, you'll say to yourself, "Oh, so that's what a haircut is supposed to be like. Okay, now I get it."

For years I've had a hard time figuring out where to get my hair cut. I'd never really thought about going to a barber shop (as opposed to a salon or a cheap haircut joint) because, well, I'd just never been.
I only had to go to Joe's once to know I'd keep going back. Yeah, the ambiance is great. But the haircut was right, the price was right, and Joe and Pete made it a place that a person could feel like a regular after going there just once. The eight-tracks, the vacuum cleaners, the 19-year-old emails taped to the wall - they might all be worth another star, but Joe's is five-star without it all. -

Did I mention the haircuts are great? Well they are. A great place if you've been searching for a place that you can stop into when you need a great haircut and good conversation. -

Best haircut ever... JOE'S BARBER SHOP.
I walked into JOE's wearing the worst haircut I've ever had in my life,
compliments of Floyd's. So bad I was contemplating shaving my head.
I had been wearing a hat for a week after getting that haircut. Luckily I passed by JOE's.
Joe Jr. didn't even laugh at my goofy haircut. He just got right down to the business of fixing me up to look like a normal guy again.
Everything about this place was right on the money from the time I stepped up to the time I walked out.
As long as I live in Chicago, I'll be heading over to Joe's to get cut. -

A fact about me: I never, ever know, how I want my hair cut. When asked, I wave my hands and make nebulous statements like 'Kinda short, but not really' or 'Well, I want to grow it out at some point, so shape it so I can do that?'. When I try this routine at $30 salons, I'm met with a strange look, but no real expulsion of disbelief, because it's impolite to tell me flat out I'm an idiot. Instead I tend to be gently steered into making a choice - my hand held along the way.
Another fact about me: Deep, deep down, I think it's morally wrong to pay $30 for a haircut. As my former hero James Hetfield of Metallica said (when they cut their locks circa 'Reload') - 'It's just dead shit that grows back on your head'
Welcome to Joe's. Within 6 minutes and 18 seconds of my having taken a seat (Walk-in, +1), he proceeded to try and sell me his old vacuum, re-winded 3 times to re-watch a scene from a B grade horror movie (on a VHS!! +1), took a bite out of a sando that was clearly too spicy for him (and manfully wiped away tears while insisting it wasn't too hot), had Pete mock him, and had Pete recommend an excellent movie to me (JCVD - watch it now).
Seriously, this is an old school barbershop. Note I said barbershop and not hair salon. When I tried my vague 'Well maybe we could try this ...' with him, Joe told me I would look like a fool and never get a date, and then proceeded to have his way with my hair.
I've gotten a date since, so clearly Joe is a fantastic behind the scenes match maker in addition to being as excellent barber as well. -

I don't know what else to add on here that hasn't been said already. The guys area all great. They know their cuts and make you feel at home at an amazing price $15. This was the first place I got my haircut after moving out here to Chicago and I have no desire to look else where and end up paying double to double and a half the price of what I pay for what I get, a high and tight. Guys, keep up the great customer service and super fly cuts.

I've spent twice as much on a haircut at other shops and didn't get half the quality (or service) that I do at Joe's Barber Shop. I'll get the basics out of the way first: $15 for a haircut, $10 for a straight razor shave. Both done with precision and care by Joe and Pete.
SUPPORT THIS LOCAL BUSINESSMAN! Joe has been at this spot for 30 some years. This is truly a community meeting place. Whenever I go for a cut I actually hope there is a wait so I can sit and talk (or just listen) to the barbers and characters who pop in to the shop.
As others have said Joe also sells a wide variety of stuff on the side. He also does repairs. Pete and I were talking about turntables a few months back and I mentioned my old beast had crapped out on me. Joe asked "what's wrong with it?" (it powered up but the actual turntable wouldn't turn). "Bring it in. I already know what's wrong with it. I'll fix it."
Joe replaced the belt and cleaned it up for $10. Good as new. I picked up a dual cassette deck this afternoon too. It's like Saturday Audio Exchange with haircuts!
Street parking on Fullerton is easy, and if you don't drive the shop is easily accessible by public transportation. It's right across the street from the Fireside Bowl in a tiny little brick building. Look for the old school barbershop pole.
If Wesley Willis were still alive he'd tell you to cut your mullet at Joe's. -

Thank you for being a real Barber shop
I love a Military high and tight hair cut, and if you don't know what you are doing you can easily F*ck it up
So I saw the event listing on Yelp for Hang Over Sunday haircut beer and a burger for $20, sounded like a deal to me so I told the BF about it and since he is starting a new job tomorrow he was like Hell Yeah I need a new cut for work
we got there late as we got a late start to the day so we skipped the burger but I had a PBR and I got the best haircut I have had in ages, and a shave with a Straight Razor shave, I also told the guy cutting my hair I missed that when in the Army they shaved around my ears and neck when I got it cut every week, so he did that also and $15 for a Haircut or Shave is more than reasonable in my book
Thanks again guys we will be back as we have found a place we both like, and that's not always easy to do
Bring cash I had to run to the ATM after I realized I had used more cash up yesterday then I had figured on, good thing there is a ATM at the end of the block -

I got absolutely scalped at the Hair Cuttery in Wicker Park and decided I needed a new spot to get my wig busted. I turned to Yelp and saw some great reviews for Joe's, so i popped in there one day.
The shop is old school. There are sun bleached 1984 Cubs schedules on the wall and the kind of patina that can't be faked by a shop trying to look like a neighborhood barber shop. Two Chairs, two barbers and an honest haircut is what you'll find inside. They aren't going to try to sell you a can of 25 dollar pomade and they aren't going to try to schedule you for a paraffin cuticle moisturizing wax.
I paid 15 bucks for a haircut that I really liked and I have no complaints about that at all. -

Why get an overpriced haircut when you can go to Joe's and get a meticulous cut and shave old school style by a professional? Hot towels, thick shaving cream, close shave, and a cold towel- too! Great service.
I don't wanna hear it, there isn't a good reason!!
Joe's is a reasonably priced barber shop that gives excellent cuts. Seriously the nape of this cut is the best I have seen, the lines are perfection. -

If you want a haircut you're going to be very happy with, then Joe's is definitely the place to go. I've been going to Joe's for about 6 or 7 years now, and i can't see myself going anywhere else for a haircut, nor do i trust anyone else to cut my hair.
Anyhow, i've never, ever, EVER had a bad experience at Joe's. Every haircut is done just the way i want it, which is saying something because my hair is a royal pain in the ass. I've brought my little boy in on numerous occasions as well, and he and i are always pleased with the results.
Whether you get your hair cut by Joe Sr. or Jr., you're going to be quite satisfied. On top of the great and friendly service, the rotating cast of regulars that stops in can always be counted on to have everyone engaged in a lively discussion about any topic you can think of.
In short, this is a barber shop that is proud to be what it is, and isn't trying to be something that it's not. If you want a haircut and shave, and you want it done well, this is the only place to go. -

Based on all the 5 star yelp reviews, I had to check this place out and see what all the fuss was about. Everything that has been said is spot on. This is a great old school barbershop and Joe Sr., Joe Jr, and Mike will give you a great cut for $15 and make you feel right at home. There are plenty of interesting nick-nacks scattered all over the shop and endless DVD's that are playing on the set to keep you entertained. Just found out they have a Sunday cookout once a month where you can get a cut or shave plus a PBR and a bite to eat. How can you go wrong? Give them a try, you won't be disappointed.

I'm loathe to write Joe's Barber Shop the review it deserves because it might result in longer wait times for me, but oh well.
This is a barber shop called Joe's. It is run by Joe. Joe will cut your hair and give you a shave with a straight razor. Pete will do the same. They will both do it well. They're also great guys.
Then, in unison with anyone else in there, we all get to argue, complain, discuss, or express whatever feelings we have, or don't have, about any issue under the sun in a beautiful, cacophonous unison. That is a barber shop - and that's what this is, a barber shop. If that's what your looking for, you found it.
p.s. - I can't believe Joe's 8-track Christmas tapes still work. He may have to eventually donate those to science. -

A combination unlike any I have been able to find, in Chicago or otherwise.
Joe's somehow manages to manufacture the perfect blend of a traditional, manly barber shop ambiance with a haircut perfectly shaped to the customers specifications.
At some point, most barber shops got bad at taking direction. A barber shop symbolized a rock of tradition, but also a loss of options, since most only do a few cuts well (crew, princeton, buzz).
As a result men have had to shift towards salons to get an up to date hair style. NOT AT JOES. Their barbers are trained master barbers who will cut your hair to your exact need, but not with a sacrifice to the "guys club" surrounding which you normally lose at a salon.
POSITIVES:
The Cut - (I was very happy with mine, and they establish at the beginning that they will change anything youre not happy with, and they will cut your hair however YOU want it cut)
The Price - $15 for a hair cut done right? $10 for a beard trim? Its less than the Hair Cutterys of the world and its a better cut.
The Barbers - Friendly, traditional, but don't force conversation. Plus they speak English(something that we are beginning to sacrifice for cheaper cuts).
The Location - Right across from Fireside bowl! good opportunity to get your bowl on!
Parking: Easy to park on Fullerton, no meters
The Facebook Page - One of the best applications for a small business FB page I have scene. Routinely promoting deals, discounts and events. Frequent updates on store hours, and notification as to which barbers are in the shop
POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENTS
1)A few minor Facebook upgrades: Before and after photos of their haircuts on Facebook. Because its a traditional barber shop people are going to be skeptical as to whether they can actually give a good cut. but their cuts are great! and they need to put that on display. Also utilize facebook events function to promote the hangover shave event.
2)Add a shoe shine if possible. Not sure of the logistics of this option(they would probably have to bring in a pro shiner or something). But I feel like shoe shines died along with the traditional barber shop, and they really do help to make your shoes last longer for a minimal cost. I would love to go bowling, followed by a cut, shave, and shine. That sound like a good day to me.
3)Overhang sign to more clearly label location. I drove by a couple times and never noticed the place was there until I went on Yelp.
