Neighborhood: Manhattan/Gramercy-FlatironAfter a night out and sleeping till 11:30, I was in the mood for breakfast. 2 eggs over easy, bacon, potatoes, toast, coffee, and tomato juice. Joe Jr looked like the type of cafe that could satisfy my hunger.
The service was good, the coffee was fresh and piping hot, and the eggs were perfectly over easy. But, the potatoes were mushy and cold and the bacon was horrible. Tasted like it was cooked 3 days ago, left out to dry to a crisp, and reheated 3 or 4 different times. All I can say is YUK.

When my friend Deb lived near Gramercy Park, this was a mainstay eatery. It's super simple -- a plain Jane diner that happens to make really excellent food. I don't think I've ever ventured beyond the cheeseburger or grilled cheese, but I'd certainly feel safe doing so.
Last night, after the Pulver party, I stopped in to eat before catching the L home. I got the cheeseburger deluxe, medium well, a cup of split pea soup -- their special for Wednesday -- and a cup of coffee.
Everything was excellent. Cheeseburger, excellent. French fries, excellent. Soup, excellent. Coffee, excellent. The soup came served with some garlicky croutons dropped on top -- turned out to be OK.
I'll go again, and if I lived in the neighborhood, it could very well be a weekly thing.

joe jr. has perfected the new york coffee shop/diner. no better place to get eggs from in the morning or a sandwich for lunch or a comfort food dinner. joe jr. doesn't try to pretend to be anything it isn't; it is exactly what it is.
