I stopped by for lunch. I had the pan-roasted tilapia with red wine sauce, mashed potatoes, and sauteed broccoli ($18).
PROS & CONS:
+ nice ambience (better for dinner)
+ good service
+ good complimentary bread & butter
+ cute individual sized pitchers for your refills (for tea or water)
+ big portions - definitely will fill you up
+ one of the best tilapia I've had in a very very very long time.
- pricey (tilapia is only what, $1 to $5 per pound unless if you shop at Whole Foods - so what's the deal with $18?! And don't come for lunch expecting lunch prices - there simply isn't one)
- sides were just okay. The mashed potatoes were too much; the sauteed broccoli was just okay, not seasoned enough (but the lemon, butter for the bread, and the red wine sauce for the tilapia all helped).
so if i'm coming here again, it probably would make sense to come for dinner so i could justify the prices a bit more (and the ambience would be even more intimate)
An overall great restaurant. It's low key, local, and has great service (something very hard to come by in Miami). I've had a few different things on the menu, but my favorite is the beet salad. It has beets, endives, and goat cheese. It's a decent sized salad and I am always so happy to have a veggie plate that looks as if they put some care into putting them together. The beets are hearty, the endives are crunchy, and the dressing is just right. I also love their iced tea. When you order it they give you your own little refill pitcher, which I think is just the cutest thing ever.
The people I have gone with (who are not vegetarian) have ordered the hamburgers. They said they were really good.
The crowd is a mix of families, old folks, and the random young local. I love going here with my grandma because they are really patient with older people- you know, people who don't remember what they ordered. It's quiet in their during lunch time- a bit dark too. But, it's all good. It makes this place different from other places on the beach.
Excellent ambience and quality service. Joe Allen is the perfect spot for a long quiet dinner where you will not be able to decide what to order. Everything on the menu sounds mouth watering with perfect food, side and sauce pairings.
Right off of the new Venetian causeway on Purdy Ave., the location offers plenty of metered parking and a nice view of the bay. Just don't miss it... look for the neon blue sign.
I consider Joe Allen to be the grandfather of comfort food on Miami Beach. Thankfully it's still around. I love the neighbourhood and even the view you may get of the Bay from some tables. I had dinner there recently and enjoyed their warm spinach and goat cheese salad - always delicious. Luckily I was dining with a large group as I was then able to try everyone else's choices. The pizza is pretty good, the pizza bread is amazing, the mussels are always excellent and their desserts, namely the bread pudding and peanut brittle are delicious. The portions are medium to large across the board.
I also had lunch there last week and ordered my favourite dish the poached salmon with a basil mayo and an olive, arugula and tomato salad. However, their burger and blt are amazing!
This restaurant is one of the most positively consistent in all respects.
This Restaurant is like a hidden secret in Sobe. If you drive by you barely notice is there. The restaurant has a cool classic American decoration. The menu has a lot of variety but I think is expensive even for lunch. I like their salads, fries and salmon panini.
Joe Allen is a neighborhood restaurant that I've been to a million times before. The food is good but nothing special. Its a great place for casual dining, I prefer it for lunch though. Tonight I went with two friends to get a light meal after a yoga class. The place was pretty empty. We ordered the La Scala salad and asked that they replace the iceburg lettuce for romaine. My girlfriend orders it this way honestly every week. The server came back and said that this couldnt be done according to his manager. My friend asked to speak to the manager. She asked for the lettuce change and he said they dont do that with ANY meals because it causes too much trouble and confusion. She explained that she does this every week and he goes "Who does this for you!". It was pretty comical but also kind of sad, this is not a huge request and they know that we are regulars. He finally said he'd do it but that it was the last time it was allowed and that it wont ever be done again. The dressing usually comes on the side but came on it tonight, which is fine. This is not a huge deal but when its a slow night and you are a restaurant that caters to locals, I would think this is pretty simple.
A friend took me to Joe Allen last September and said that only locals know about this place. It is definitely not on a main street, nor would it be easy for tourists to find. Probably at least two reasons the locals prefer it here.
I ordered the salmon and my friend had the steak. The salmon was good, and my friend ate all the fries and had to take the rest of the steak home. I can't remember if we had an appetizer, but overall the experience was good.
First, unless you have an address you would never run into the place. Second, if you were standing outside the place you would never get any idea of what it is like inside. Opening the door reveals the pleasant surprise to a hidden cove away from the surrounding area. If there is a theme for the food I am not sure what it is and it is an interesting mix. All of us at the table were satisfied but not amazed.
I eat here at least once a week. The food is always consistent. The black bean soup is amazing. The la scala salad is simple but great. Bread is always warm. Fish and chicken entrees always good. Old style of veggie stew is missed but new versian is ok. Everyone loves the bolognese. Glasses of wine are oversized. Desserts stand out- toll house cookies, date bread pudding, rice krispies treats...
My party of regulars is often asked to "keep it down"- Joe Allen gets us that excited.
Go to Joe Al on a weeknight with good friends for good food.
I am having trouble including Joe Allen's on Yelp because I want to jealously guard it and keep it to myself.
I love it dearly - like an old friend.
This is not a gourmet "experience" but a local place with comfort food. Great fish, meatloaf, pasta, pizzas, salads and desserts.
It is truly simple yet elegant. At first glance, it's nothing fancy. Soon, however, you start to appreciate the little touches of the decor. Cute surfer cut-outs on the walls, cool lighting fixtures that provide perfect lighting, clever table placement.
The staff are professional and tend to stick around for years - making this feel like more of a club than restaurant.
My only real issue I have with it: they don't take American Express. Harsh complaint, huh?
So, go if you must. I guess I can't stop you.
I really liked Joe Allen. It's the perfect comfort food/unpretentious type of spot to go when you're not in the mood to deal with the South Beach "scene". We hit Joe Allen New Year's Day around 10:00 and sat right at the bar. Sean the bartender was our server and we had a ball with him. I had a nice qtr litre of "Sin Zin" red zinfandel and he had Stoli rasberry on the rocks.
We started with the steamed mussels with ginger, scallions and a white wine sesame soy sauce. Very good, very fresh. Next, we shared the La Scala which consisted of diced salami, provolone (a LOT of), iceberg lettuce, chopped red peppers, and chickpeas. VERY good and a nice portion for two to share. We actually had some to take home after.
For entrees, he had the pan-roasted grouper (should have been mahi-mahi, but they 86'd it from the menu as they ran out) with soy sweet chili sauce and stir friend vegtables. Generous portion and tasty fish. I had the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and broccoli. Enormous portions and very yummy. I was quite happy with my choice as it was the perfect thing for my post New Year's Eve haze.
Dessert was a toss-up between the bread pudding and the date pudding, but in the end bread pudding won.
Joe Allen has a wonderful unpretentious vibe, very minimal decor and awesome waitstaff. I will definitely be back at some point.
Had dinner at Joe Allen with a friend last night. Dinner was completely forgetable, actually a let down. I stared with the Pumpkin Soup which was rather bland with some funnny pumpkin seed pesto that left lots of inedible pieces in my mouth. Next I ordered the Thai vegetable/brown rice/coconut milk dish. Why should I pay $22+ for a dish with canned mushrooms? I get upset when fresh ingredients are not used at places charging $20+ for an entree. Simple ingredients that they could have purchased from the Publix around the corner for $1.25 a pound. Big turnoff on the dinner side, but then came dessert....
Dessert saved this place and will probably bring me back. After having listened to the New Orleans Jazz Funeral performance by Seraphic Fire at Miami Beach Community Church earlier in the evening, I was feeling homesick. What a delight to see New Orleans Bread Pudding on the menu. My friend Gail told, or rather warned, me of the awesome-ness of their desserts. She had the Date Cake which was heaven. My bread pudding was equally out of this world. Nothing exciting about dinner but dessert rocked!
I have loved this restaurant for years! Sometimes just to go in for a drink at the bar and to listen to Etta James..
I have taken many a guest to enjoy this little gem, and no matter what I order off the menu, I get a side of spinach. There's is so good!
I had dinner with some friends at Joe Allen's this week. I went with the recommended Meatloaf with Mashed Potatoes and Broccoli. It was a well impressive meal. The meatloaf was good , the broccoli was great (i think it was the yummy amount of garlic on it) and the mashed potatoes were normal. NOTE: Please do not try to do anything productive after eating this meal the only place you are headed is for bed. The place itself is very nice and cozy. However I did find it odd they didn't add gratuity to a party of 9 , but that's another story. I'd like to come back to try the Rigatoni Bolognese which I've heard is very good.
This is comfort food with a good selection of salads at it best in this off Lincoln road location. It's located west of Alton Road near the Publix and South Beach Towing (if you've ever been towed). My wife and I had the strip steak and daughter (home from college) the liver. That said, the peanut brittle and vanilla ice cream dessert and the mixed berry tart would be worth a "repeat".
The atmosphere is dark and the service is good. There won't be any people watching since there are only a few restaurants in this industrial area near the Marina. For parking, don't forget to bring your change or your Miami Beach Parking card because there is only metered parking around. It also says right on their menu that if you park in the vacant on the corner, you will be towed. With South Beach Towing around the corner, there is probably a 99.9% chance of it.
nought too exciting--bit farty
nice little trio of restaurants on Purdy -- this one, sardinia, and ouzo.
several other worldwide locations.
food is good, the homemade ravioli with ricotta and spinach stuffing, basil marinara sauce was tasty, and had a nice sweetness to it.
tagliarini with grilled chicken more traditional sun-dried tomato tartness. i'd try a few other dishes. i saw someone with the ice cream cookie sandwich -- massive 3 scoops.
Hard to go wrong with any meal at Joe Allen (or drink for what its worth). The stuff pork is amazing. I think the "Date dessert" with toffee they serve could be the best I have ever had. Service is good and while it always is packed I have never had trouble getting a table. Brunch is excellent there as well.
Joe Allen is definately worth it. It's off the beaten path but well known by the locals. The prices are reasonable and the food is good! I highly recommend their mojitos, pizzas, and salmon sandwich. (Meatloaf if you're looking for comforrt food) Also, you can park in the lot in front of the restaurant.
