I admit, I am not 100% sure which one we got but I think it was the Pina Colada. I could be wrong about that because we asked the guy to choose one for us and he just gave us the most popular one. So we split a small, which was actually too big for us.

The shaved ice is really good, which kind of surprised me. I grew up with shaved ice and it was always too sugary for me. But this was a nice blend, a good combination of the various flavours but wait, there's ice cream at the bottom with macadamia nuts! Yum! This is a really great spot to go grab something to cool down with.

Cheap and delicious! We got shaved ice for 4 people for $13. Their specials are really great places to start on the menu if you don't know what you want. They go through a line pretty quickly, and got all our orders right.

Be sure to get it with the macadamia nut ice cream in the bottom! Yum!

I really don't know how this spot is so well-reviewed... the shave ice here was truly disappointing.  You know when the ice is crunchy, there's a problem.

There was only one guy working, though the girl in the break room looked to be an employee as well.  The counter guy kept looking back at her like, "really?  You're not going to help me out with this sudden influx of people?  Alright..."

He was really struggling.  It took almost 10 minutes for us to order (six people in front of us) and another 5 to receive our partially-melted shave ice.  Come to think of it, that may have been at least in part responsible for the icy texture.

    I couldn't care less that it's a glorified shack - that's kinda Kaua'i's style.

    ABSOUTELY DELICIOUS!!!!!

Yes, the service was not speedy (one guy behind the counter), yes the decor was ugly (come on people it's a shaved ice shack) and yes there is nowhere to sit inside so you are plopped down outside on hard benches on the highway, but really??? As I have previously stated - It's a shaved ice shack.

I ordered  the Colada Special and he ordered the Haupia Special and both were absolutely knock your socks off unbelievably amazing! The drizzle of coconut over the top and the macadamia nut ice cream at the bottom sandwich in a delicious blend of great shaved ice. I am not a shaved ice expert so I don't know exactly what the exact texture of a shaved ice is supposed to be, but I can tell you that this is absolutely delectable. It was just a big ol' cup full of heaven.

I can see where the wait could be exceedingly long, but we did not experience that. If we did it still would have been worth it. You have to try this place!!!

Yes the serve is slow but........the counter person has to personally shave the ice, add ice cream and the flavorings.  There was only one guy working his arse off and seemed to be a but grumpy.  I would be a lot grumpier if I was doing his job.

So please leave a big tip for a thankless job.

I had the BEST shaved ice ever!

I chose #2 Tropical Rainbow (Mango, Lilikoi, Guava with MacNut Ice cream on the bottom). OMG X 1000!---I was in Sugar Heaven from the first to last bites.   I think I felt like i was reliving all my favorite taste sensations.

The ice is powdery fine and the syrups are all made from scratch.

The Macadamia nut ice cream was so rich and creamy with lots of macadamia nuts---full  of calories ---too yummy!!

Mr. Rinky had a trio of tropical flavors and LOVED them all.  I  don't know what he had I was too busy being mesmerized by my cup of deliciousness.

The price for two "small" but filling cups was under $6!

Definitely worth a visit but the hours are limited  11 am ish to 5 pm ish.

Why isn't there a Jo Jo's in the Bay Area?  Don't you think a shaved ice place would make a killing in the Bay Area?

Okay, I'm a fan of Jo Jo's but not the shaved ice. Nothing wrong with Jo Jo's... I just don't like fruity flavors, but there's a saving grace. The macadamia nut ice cream was GOOD! I should have had a cup of that. DANG IT!

Yum yum yum...on a good day!  We made two trips and the first was just so so, but the second trip was delicious!!  Yes, the service is slow, but its Kauai and chances are you are on vacation, so you shouldn't really be in much of a rush anyways.  The one guy behind the counter didn't seem thrilled to be there but was working as hard and as fast as he possibly could...its busy for a reason.

The mac nut ice cream is an absolute must!!  Colada Special was great and my boyfriend loved the coconut shavings and cream.  I opted to make my own with a combination of three of their 60+ flavors and thought the butterscotch and vanilla were the best.  You really can't go wrong with whatever you choose.

    FOR THE QUANTITY EATER

If getting a lot for your money is what you're after, this is the place.  They have very generous portions.  You can choose between small, med or large. Basic shave ice with 2 topping in a medium was $3. And it was HUGE. They serve it in a styrofoam cup and it's piled high.

The shave ice itself is between the fluffy flakey snow known in Hawaii and the granular snowcones known in the mainland.  It was good, but not the same experience.

And yes, the service is that slow. One guy taking orders, working the cash register, shaving the ice, pouring the syrups, scooping the ice cream, refilling the syrup bottles.  Ridiculous., With as much business as they do, they can't have a second clerk? Really?

If it were just a review of the finished product, this place would get 6 stars. The shaved ice is so good, and far better than any other I've ever had. We tried 4 different combinations of flavors over 2 trips to this place and all were really exceptional. Our favorite was the pina colada, daquiri with coconut cream and macadamia nut ice cream. AMAZING!

Why only 3 stars? The service sucks bad. Only 1 guy works in this place and he is working his backside off because it is very busy. But that means that it takes a minimum of 20-30 minutes to get your dessert on. Don't get me wrong, it's worth it, but oh so agonizingly slow.

Go here knowing how long it will take, sit back and enjoy the frustration of the process, and enjoy the end product. Loved it!

A true local fav! So, yes, it takes a long time, yes, there isn't a lot of space to move around in, and yes, it's all still worth it.  My favorite and go-to: #2 on the menu, the Haupia Special.  If you love coconut and/or haupia, this is an absolute MUST!  My family and I regularly make it to Kauai and make a point to stop in at JoJo's!

Shave Ice does not equal...CRUNCHY Ice.  Other than Jo Jo's offering 60 flavors and $2/small cup, I'm not really sure why it has such high ratings.  Other than the fab Mac Nut Ice Cream on the bottom, great flavors (I had lilikoi, honeydew, guava w/ haupia on top)...I just wasn't a fan of crunching down on my deformed ice cubes in my cup.  That kind of ruined it for me.  My husband had the same issue with his batch of shave ice.  Lets just say, I'm still in search of the best shave ice on Kauai and have still to find it.

Painfully slow service... when we went there was only one employee (who was a dead ringer for Vanilla Ice) doing everything. It is super cheap shave ice, but def not the best or at all worth going out of your way to find. This place seems like the only reason tourists go to this town and couldn't have been more of a let-down. I give it two stars because, despite its popularity, it is frankly basically a shanty on the side of the road and the "local flavor" factor is charming.

We stopped at Jo Jo's because it was recommended in the "Kauai Revealed" tour book.  We used "Maui Revealed" when we visited that island and everything the author recommended that we did, we agreed with his review.  Where Jo Jo's is concerned, that was not the case.  If you're stuck in Waimea and want shave ice, this is the place to go.  However if you want the "best on the island" then take a drive!

Shave ice should be snowlike.  It should start melting as soon as it hits your tongue.  The ice a Jo Jo's was granular and had a crunch to it.  Maybe they need to sharpen their blade, I don't know, but I was disappointed.  There is a shave ice place in Lihue (attached to the Burger Hut).  It's tiny and you may have to wait a few minutes for your treat, but it's worth the wait!

Unfriendly service and ugly decor aside at Jo Jo's, the shave ice was more of a snow cone, which is NOT the same as shave ice.  As children, Dad used to make us shave ice in the summers.  Having it on the islands took me right back to my long lost years as a youth.

We (4 of us) stopped by Jo Jo's on the highway (7-26-11) after returning back from Waimea Canyon.  We saw Jo Jo's from the outside, which looked like a cool hole in the wall joint.  We made it a point to try shaved ice everyday while in Kauai and thought this would be a great spot.

What a HUGE disappointment!!  The guy with the tatts taking the orders was a joke.  His had such a BAD attitude I couldn't believe it.  He hardly spoke and when he did, he mumbled like WE were wasting his time. Are you kidding me?

After paying for our order, the guy held out his hand with my change like it was a struggle to hand it over.  Then, NO eye contact and NO "hey thanks for stopping by". It wasn't like he was a shy kid, he acted like he was just totally put out having to work and with a bad attitude.

The ice was decent at best, but like other reviews pointed out, it was not the fluffy ice we had come to expect from other places we tried.

Seriously, read the RECENT posts.  Many say the same thing about this "attitude" and how lousy the service was!!

If you're the owner reading this, I hope you take note for the future people who use "YELP" looking for a shaved ice place near you.  Kauai is not that big and you do not have to drive far to hit the next town offering shaved ice.  If your the one who took the orders with the lousy attitude, take note and act like you're not put out by people who come from ALL OVER the US and beyond to try Jo Jo's.

I don't pay for attitude, especially in the "Aloha" state on vacation.........We will not return unless we see the "attitude" is gone.

I love snack food that comes out of places that look like hovels. There was the soup guy in the tarp-covered shack in Brooklyn, the sandwiches out of a garage, and now Jo Jo's Shave Ice.

I got the #2. After you get to the macadamia ice cream past the ice, it's just what you need to cut the juicy fruitiness. With fat and nuts, of course.

    Yum.

I had mine half-melty because I needed to drive our group back to the hotel in order to get to the wedding in time. Half-melty was still delicious. The fruit syrup mingled well with the ice cream drippings.

You don't go to a hovel for good service.

Okay. So I went there years ago. The time we went, they had over 80 flavors for your shaved ice including vanilla ice cream! I had your typical strawberry syrup with ice cream. My son had his mango and pineapple, and my wife had coffee with heavy cream. They were all very delicious. I recommend if you head to Kaua'i during the summer or any hot day, hit Jo Jo's and try their many flavors. I promise, you'll enjoy it!

For those of you not familiar of Waimea, Kauai. Its the last big town before you hit Waimea Canyon. So when you take a drive to the west side (the hottest place in Hawaii) you need the treat to satisfies you on a typical Hawaiian Tropical day....shave ice.

Apparently Jo Jo's Shave Ice is the place to go to trench your shave ice thirst. It is definitely a hole in the wall, but don't go crazy of the not so modernized decor. This is typical for any good shave ice place.

I consider myself a shave ice connoisseur, so I think I have a good idea of what is good. The pinnacle of shave ice is Waiola, Tats and Shimuzu so this will be my comparison.

Unfortunately the shave ice doesn't meet the shave ice standard. The ice was to hard. Trust me you need taste the pinnacle for you to understand my last statment. However the wonderful combinations, creations and location makes this a place to visit while in Waimea, Kauai. There are better shave ice places but this place will definitely cure the shave ice crave. So before you make the trek to Waimea Canyon make a stop at Jo Jo's Shave Ice.

He had the tropical rainbow over mac nut ice cream.  Mine was the tropical colada over mac nut and coconut ice cream.  Double yum!  The creamy coconut added over the shave ice was a delight!

This place has an interesting atmosphere!  Yuck!  We went outside and consumed the treat on the rough benches outside.  About four bites into the treat, I was blissfully cool and loving life!

    Yum!

What won't happen at Jo Jo's: you will be wowed by the friendly service and modern decor

What will happen at Jo Jo's: you will get a massive, delicious shave ice and you will eat it and you will love it.

The Halu halu is intense-- its like a whole meal of beans and gummy bits.  BF had one of the recommended combos, which was great.

I don't know about the "Shave Ice Nazi" or "bad attitude" references, that wasn't our experience, the white guy with piercings just seemed busy. Give the kid a break.

For an individual serving, I'd recommend the small unless you want to make a meal out of it . . . a medium is huge if you have it with ice cream and azuki beans.

It's all about the ice. A snow cone isn't a shave ice. The ice here is between snow cone pebbly texture and the snow-like texture of an old-fashioned shave ice.

Syrups were good, but ice cream seemed to be "cheap". The main turnoff was the azuki beans, definitely not filipino-style like in a halo-halo. The beans were mushy and in a very sugary syrup at the bottom of the cup. Probably corn syrup. But it was all too sweet. Imagine eating two teaspoons of sugar and you get the idea. [found out later that this is was canned azuki beans that weren't drained]

Maybe it's a Waimea thing, the Lilikoi Chiffon pie at Wong's Bakery was also much too sweet. If you want a tasty Hawaiian treat, try the Hula Pie at Duke's, Nawiliwili Bay.

This place has good shave ice if you are out on the Westside of the island.
As with most of the businesses/buildings on the Westside, it looks closed and condemned.
Blonde surfer dude with tatoos serves the ice and seems to hate tourists.
I probably wouldn't go back because the Eastside has its share of good shave ice stands.

    TERRIBLE TERRIBLE SERVICE.

I think this place is popular because it doesn't have any competitors along the main street. The heat sends droves of people looking for some sort of chilly respite, which they hope to find at Jo Jo's Shave Ice. Its when you walk into the small dungeon of a shop that you discover the hell you've gotten yourself into. Store policy requires you to keep the door shut, which is fine by me, if I had been asked nicely. Instead the lone staff member barked orders at patrons. Everyone meekly did as they were told, and waited out the excruciatingly long time it took for the guy to take everyone's order and then prep each one, one at a time.

Not only is the store's work flow completely inefficient, the staff at Jo Jo's are also complete pr*cks. We stopped by twice (yes, we were REALLY desperate) and each time the staff members gave us, and everyone else in the shop, tons of lip and snark.

This is not as big of a deal, but I'm not a huge fan of their syrups; they were WAY too sweet (and I wasn't the only one. I overheard tons of other grumpy customers complaining about the sugar OD). I'd rather they limit their flavors to a smaller number that they do really well.

Never again! If you MUST get shave ice here, remember: CASH ONLY.

Ah, shave ice. Often elusive to the mainlander but well known to the native and we, my family, heard that Jo Jo's was the spot. We were deep fried by the son and a bit tired by the time we made it to Waimea but excited to get some sweetness in our bellies. Perhaps we were too excited...

Pretty much every flavor we wanted was gone. Sigh, oh well. It was fine I guess, I had the root beer float and while I think I prefer a fluffier instead of crunchier experience I hate to complain about eating something sweet in such an awesome location.

Not a fan of shaved ice but enjoyed my colada special. No macnut ice cream in stock so had to take vanilla ice cream at the bottom. Still yummy.

We hit this place up right before a bunch of other people walked in. Yay! But it's true-- service is slow with one order done at a time.

Lower  your expectations please. It is literally a little shack with a little ice shaver and some syrups. No bells and whistles. Come with patience or don't even bother.

My absolute favorite thing I ate in Kauai and possibly anywhere. It might have had something to do with just finishing a 6 hr. hike but none the less this stuff was amazing!

I had tried shave ice in Waikiki years ago and wasn't blown away by it. I was excited to try it again on this trip and did my research and this seemed to be the place to go. The place is real tiny and right across from Waimea HS, those lucky kids!

I ordered the #6, Colada, man this was unlike anything I had ever had. The perfect consistency and the cocount cream on top really made it. I love cocunut and this was a great addition and suprise. Just when I was getting sad that the ice was almost gone I got to the macadamia nut ice cream, whoever thought of that is genius. Who knew that fruity ice would go so well with the macnut ice cream. Even though my mouth was completely numb by the time I was done I seriously considered ordering another one and a large this time but I didn't and I'm really pissed at myself for that. I know I will never find anything even close to that here in CA, I've actually tried since I've gotten home and only been disappointed.

Definitely stop here if you want to try authentic Hawaiian Shave Ice, the hours are not very consistent so try to get there early. Do not go to Kauai without stopping here, I promise you will be hooked!!

As far as shaved ice goes it was pretty good. Choose one of their suggested combos.  I had the three fruit shaved ice with macadamian nut ice cream which was refreshing. The cappuccino one tastes artificial but that could be just my taste. You pay for the ice and the extras like ice cream in the suggested combos are all extra. It's next to the Waimea public library where you might be able to get internet access.

I know nothing about shave ice, but after a trip up Waimea Canyon and back into the dry-dry heat at sea level, I don't think I've ever had a better reward. I got, I think, the no. 2 or no. 3, the tropical flavors escape me, but yes of course you must have the macadamia nut ice cream on the bottom. I have no idea why these flavors work, but work they do. The place is a shack and I can't even tell you it didn't feel like walking into a shack with a urinal nearby, but hell yeah it's worth the stop. Don't listen to people whining about the service. Nothing comes fast (certainly not smiles), but the job is preparing shave ice in a shack for too many tourists - how much would you be smiling?

I heard that this was one of THE shave ice places to hit up while in Kaui.  Well I gotta say that for a place that gets most of its business from tourists I was kinda put off by the attitude of the guys behind the counter.. no "hello" or a "what can I get for you?" I was acknowledge by what I would consider was an annoyed and peeved stare.  Yikes!!  If it wasn't for my kids who were excited for their shave ice I would have walked right out.  The shave ice is ok, the price is o k, and selection is good.  This place is over-hyped and because of the attitude of the folks behind the counter wont be coming back.  This place is no comparison to Matsumoto's on Oahu's North Shore.  There's plenty of shave ice locations on the island...don't patronize these folks who obviously take their customers for granted.

I guess I just don't get it.  Tried shave ice elsewhere on the island during our last trip, and JoJo's this time, and just don't really dig it.  My husband got a tropical one (#2 maybe?) and I got the banana split.  I liked mine except for whatever the red syrup was...cherry or strawberry I guess.  It was pretty strong and too sweet.  I guess the banana flavor is called "real bananas" because I thought there were actual REAL BANANAS in it.  Nope, just yellow syrup.  To their credit, it was one of the better banana flavored products I have had (normally I don't like artificial banana flavoring).  It also had vanilla ice cream on the bottom, which was so cold it was practically a frozen brick.  The chocolate cream also didn't really seem like a cream, but more like a chocolate syrup.  Who knows.

All that said, it was fairly tasty.  I liked the macnut ice cream that was in my husband's a lot better, but the tropical syrups were also too sweet for me.  His ice cream was a lot softer than mine also.

They have a zillion flavors (ok 60) and combinations so the hardest part is picking one.  They've got some suggestions on the board, or you can create your own.

Yes, you should try some shave ice while you're in Hawaii, just don't get TOO excited about it...

Wouldn't know how the shave ice is here since the person at the counter rudely told us that the place was closed and we had to get out.

    bad day?

So many flavors to choose from....we went with the Island favorite and #6 and the #6 was defnately better. The girl working the counter was not super friendly but she was the only one there and doing it all.  Sizes are a bit deceiving. I should have gotten a small or shared the medium.  I was ok until I reached the cream and ice cream and then I had a hard time finishing but it's too good to put down.  Yes, I was mirerably full for about an hour.

I can't compare to other shaved ice stands because this was the only one we visited.  It was very tasty and we'll go back again.

Probably one of the better shave ice options on Kauai.

I had the tropical rainbow (mango, lilikoi, guava) with macnut ice cream and my wife had the halo-halo (which raised an eyebrow or two of some distinctly non-Filipino tourists behind us). Service was fairly quick and polite considering the line was almost out the door.

Man, that was tasty. The macnut ice cream went perfectly with the syrups and finely shaved ice. Wifey enjoyed her halo-halo thoroughly, although hers didn't come with any ice cream, probably was extra and we didn't realize. I shared some of mine, just to be nice. ;)

Next time, we'll have to try the Original Jo Jo's Anueanue Shave Ice down the street for comparison, we only saw it after we finished our treats.

Craving some shaved ice, I need to come back to Jo Jo's for a visit.  A must stop cruising the west side!

ONO! I don't know if its Jo-Jo's or maybe a combination of both the mac nut ice cream and haupia snow cap that has ruined me forever from mediocre shave ice. I mean come on now, after having shave ice why bother with a snow cone?! I loved all the exotic fruit flavors beyond bubble gum and cherry. I got mac nut icream shave ice topped guava, passion fruit and lilikoi and haupia.

Worth the drive from East Side and 2 lactose pills!

The one thing everyone told me that I must eat while in Kauai was shaved ice.  I've never had it before and imagined it would be similar to what you get from a snow cone machine.  Ummm. Nope.  Prepare yourself for a sugar high and major ice cream headache!

After a tiring hike through Waimea Canyon, my husband and I stopped at Jo Jo's to recovery and cool off.  I am obsessed with anything coconut, so I got a small colada special.  The first couple bites were pretty good, but the money bites were towards the bottom of the bowl - MAC NUT ICECREAM IS BOMB!!  I absolutely loved it.  A small was actually pretty big...although I loved it, I couldn't eat it all.

Unless you're allergic, go with the mac-nut ice cream at the bottom.  We tried the first two of the three 'recommended' combinations and loved them both.

The place is a bit run down and there flies by the picnic table, but you can sit on the wall in front of the library next door and enjoy your shave ice instead.

Maybe it was the hot day, or maybe they use more or better syrup, but this was the best shave ice we've had in our many visits to the islands.
