I was thoroughly disappointed by their shabu shabu sauces. Except for the creamy sauce, which is hard to get wrong, the spicy and sour sauces were both not very appetizing for me.

And again I as disappointed by the quantity of their mushroom.

Service was pretty good, and food was alright. It gets down to this question though- Would you ever come back/recommend this place to others?

Nay.

my favorite shabu shabu place
for those who gave bad ratings for this place, i guess you guess do not enjoy shabu shabu itself.
shabu shabu places do not give out lots of ban chan or side dishes
you're suppose to eat shabu shabu itself
and the meat is supposingly to be bland
it's not like american restaraunts where it's poured with sauces.okay?
and originally shabu shabu restaraunts are suppose to be pricey
the food itself is considered somewhat pricey

if you are someone who's food taste is very americanized and like to eat greasy, over sauced food i do not recommend you this place.
more than this place, this kind of food.
it's more for people who like healthy food and who enjoys less sauce and msg.

I had high hopes for this restaurant based on the glowing reviews and the swank interior.  But I must say I was rather disappointed with the food.    I ordered the lettuce wrap shabu shabu, maybe that was my first mistake.  It came with a lovely tray containing 2 kinds of kimchi, sauce, and an empty bowl.  WTF am I supposed to do with an empty bowl?  Where's my banchan??  The meat was so bland and they didn't provide any dipping sauce other than the ssam jang.  The lettuce pieces come prefilled with rice and weird crunchy stuff which I guess is cool, but this place definitely left my wanting something more.  Maybe a slice of pizza or something...

Cloth napkins at a Korean joint?? I'm already impressed.

I had the prime sukiyaki here not the shabu shabu. It was delicious. Now...I've tried both the prime and choice...by far...prime is the way to go...but I don't think you needed me to tell you that. It's a no brainer.

Now for those of you unfamiliar with sukiyaki...it's much like shabu shabu but you cook the veggies and meat in a semi sweet broth (you can decide how sweet you want it with the soup they give you) then you dip it in raw egg. You mix one egg and shredded dried roasted seaweed (ghim) in a little saucer and dip the meat and veggies in there and eat it. Don't be scared. It's fine. It's absolutely delicious. It's about $25 per person (without alcohol). Not bad for the great quality food and excellent service. The servers pretty much do all the cooking for you. All you have to do is eat. Yay!

Edit 9/20/2007: OMG. How could I forget?? They make you this fried rice thing after you finish your meat and veggies. Ummm...yummy.

From a cheapskate's POV, this place is a little pricey, I must say, but at least you get full. The cheapest set was around 15.00, and you're getting about 8 THIN slices  of meat.  If you're going here, you're paying extra moola on the ambience (artfully lit booths), the presentation (cute dipping tray and nicely arranged meat) and service (you basically do NOTHING, which is odd at a shabu shabu place). After finishing my lettuce wraps, they throw in a whole melange of veggies/tofu/dumplings.  After that, they ask you if you want rice or noodles.  I chose the noodles, slurped up the creamy soup, and finally, I was full.  The fact that I was full upped it up a notch.

I love shabu shabu but this is the first time I've ever tried korean style shabu shabu. It's definitely different from your traditional japanese version. The interesting part is the meat is wrapped in lettuce and of course there's plenty of the side dishes that makes this experience unmistakably korean.

Unfortunately I had to leave before I could enjoy the end, which I hear consist of either noodles or rice dish. I'm excited for the next time I get to try the entire course from start to finish.

It is definitely a very modern restaurant.
High-class representation with moderate amounts.
I am a big fan of food representation so, i love it there.
The best shabu shabu.
The only thing is it is pricey!

i enjoyed the sangchussam shabu.  it comes with lettuce and rice, wrapped individually into the perfect bite.  they give you your own trays of banchan.  service was great!  after the shabu, you have a choice of either noodles (kal gook soo) or rice porridge (jook) that they mix with kimchee and the beef broth.  so yum!   it's a little pricey but you'll be full after.  i came here on a sunday night and it was pretty empty.

Their appetizers are great.  Good quality meat, but as usual they don't give you that much meat... I need more.  : )  Try their Beef Carpaccio and Pacific Fajita (Goo-Jul-Pan).  As a main meal, I'd suggest you pick "Sangchussam Shabu" and maybe another order of regular shabu shabu.  Little pricey, but definitely recommended.

quality of beef (the choice or prime cuts) were not that great.

i liked their kimchi. and the seaweed little appetizer thing that they give you.  the dipping sauces were interesting.

i didn't like how they rush you. and dump everything in the water for you.  all your veggies and some of your meat.  they rush you like crazy.
and they keep the water boiling at really high heat which totally overcooks my meat. i tried lowering it, but they put it back up and poured the rest of my veggies and meat into the pot.

i want to dip at my own pace!

on the bright side, the kimchi kal gooksu is good.
and i like the mochi + kiwi "dessert".

one order of prime and choice each came to about  49$+ tip. not worth it in my opinion.

average at best.

jinsang has been one of my favorite places in seoul (they have several branches all over kangnam-gu; the first one opened in chungdam about 20 years ago) for a light shabu shabu lunch. one day i was cruising in k-town on olympics and whoa, there it was. jin sang. food is pretty much the same. interior deco is the same. good heaven. are you kidding me? i've never thought i would be able to savor my favorite sangchu (red lettuce leaves) shabu shabu ssam (wrap) in los angeles. although this place is getting a bit old now, it is still a delightful place for shabu shabu in korean style.  make sure you sit tight for the complimentary hot and spicy kimchi knife-cut noodle soup they serve after you finish digging out  all the shabu shabu meat from the pot. enjoy!
