Barbecue snob here!
Notice I didn't call myself a barbecue expert. Hell I've never even been to places like Memphis or KC. But I tend to judge barbecue places on harsher standards. Let's put it this way... Although I enjoy places like Famous Dave's I don't consider them "real barbecue". In order to pass that test in my world there has to be an owner on premises who is dedicated to making the best possible barbecue they can. It has to be a sense of pride. You can't get that in a chain restaurant.
I'm here to report that Jimmy's has passed my test. And I'm sure Jimmy would be so relieved.
Is it the best barbecue I've ever had? Well, no. That's a tough competition. But the food here is worthy of the competition. That much I can say.
I'm personally a fan of the pulled chicken because it has flavor and it isn't dry. If you can pull that off on simple pulled chicken then you care about the quality of your food. And one tip... Never hesitate to get the whipped sweet potatoes. I had some for lunch and I damn near licked the inside of the container in public. Thankfully Jimmy keeps a sink in the dining room to wash up at without having to trudge to the bathroom. Nice touch. -

Not bad. The meats were good but what really makes the food here is the sauce. If the BBQ sauce weren't as good as it was it would be a very average BBQ joint. I feel all BBQ spots are overrated, and this one is no exception. I feel lunch shouldn't be more than 5 bucks, ever.
Bottom line; Sauce makes this place good, but lunch will run you 10 to 15 smackers. -

This is my favorite place in town and considering we're north of the Mason/Dixon Line, it is a positive. I love their hot sausage, ribs and pulled pork and agree with several people that the puled pork is a little dry and the sausage is not too spicy although people around here might think it is. I just started trying the ribs and they were delicious and meaty and have a nice smoked flavor.
They also have these kick ass spices and seasonings that you can put on your pulled pork, brisket or sausage to add a little kick and the employees are quite friendly and go out of their way to make it a rewarding dining experience.
You'll definitely see my face at this place unless the prices get crazy or the food takes a nosedive but I think this place definitely shines over Mabel's & Bull Durhams! -
Review from Matt K.
I had the pulled pork sandwich. It was nice and large with plenty of pork. The pork was fairly lean, a little bit on the fry side, but very tender. When you put sauce on it, of course, it gets wet. So I put the hot sauce on it, and it was excellent. The bun was tasty and soft, but not squeeze-it-into-a-ball-and-chuck-it-against-the-wa ll soft.
The cole slaw that came with it was nice, and possibly an original recipe.
I will be back. -

Jimmy's has the best barbecue in town! I stop by every few months for lunch. It's $13 for a platter, which includes a meat (brisket, pulled pork, etc.), a slice of bread, and 2 sides. I always go for the mac and cheese, which is super creamy and has bread crumbs in it, and the whipped sweet potatoes. I've also had the cornbread, which, honestly, is a little drier than I like, but they give you a huge piece.
The tables have rolls of paper towels and 3 types of BBQ sauce. On top of the awesome food, the people there are always very warm and friendly. -

Dear Jimmy,
I've been thinking for several days about how I was going to say this to you. After our chance encounter a few days ago I knew in my heart that our relationship was one that could not last.
You see, outwardly you have everything that I could ever want ; visibly clean environment, friendly employees, a sufficient number of menu choices...
But it's what's on the inside that counts and when you get down to the heart of it we're simply not compatible. First, let's start with the fact that I like to be fiscally responsible. You want me to pay $7 for a chicken sandwich alone? True, the bread was soft and delicious and the meat lightly seasoned but 7? Unless the bird that produced this chicken was prone to laying golden eggs, I can't justify the expense on a regular basis.
Now let's talk about your side dishes. Your whipped sweet potatoes are not so sweet. Where's the cinnamon? Nutmeg? Brown sugar? Butter? I'm convinced you served me waterlogged sweets and put no effort into making them any more appealing.
Then as I sit in your establishment, precariously trying to to hold together and eat the saucy covered lunch that is my sandwich, I'm continuously interrupted by gnats. I get it, it's summer, it was a 97° day and there's bottles of sweet delicious BBQ sauce on every table but that was annoying.
When it comes down to it $13 for a chicken sandwich, bland potatoes and a fountain drink just ain't my style. I'm sure you'll meet a suburban gal that loves you in spite of all of these facts. There are few like you in the area so I know you'll sparkle like a gem..but for me, I've been places and seen too much. So, I suppose I left my heart with another who lives south of the Mason-Dixie. So until I reconnect with him I'll just stick with "Lashonda's BBQ."
Even though we won't be seeing one another again, know that I wish nothing but the best for you.
Sincerely,
Lashonda
P.S. Who gave you the moniker "famous?" I mean you're an okay guy and all but famous? I don't think you are, or at least you shouldn't be. -

There are 3 things that I LOVE.. Roller Disco's, Farmers Markets and BBQ! Mmmmm Hmmmmm!
Oh and my Husband of course (forgive me my love). lol
I can't stand these new "classy" or "trendy" formal BBQ restaurants that have been popping up lately. When I think of BBQ, I think of a dump/shack on the side of a road or a small space attached to a strip mall, something extremely casual, cafeteria style eating & a jolly large man/woman taking my order.
Well at Jimmy's BBQ in MALVERN PA (don't ask me where that is, we got lost about 3 times trying to find this place from Philadelphia) is what I consider my type of BBQ joint!
- Casual no thrills dining
- Attached to a strip mall
- Huge smoker parked right in the parking lot
- Jolly large man (I'm assuming is Jimmy) taking my order, suggesting some of his favorites, explaining how he cooks his meats and checking in on us throughout our meal
- Blues Music playing in the background
- 3 Selections of extremely tasty homemade BBQ sauces on the table
- Great selection on BBQ meat platters, specials & sandwiches
- Sides that will have you licking that fork clean
Is Jimmy's worth the drive from Philadelphia? Sure why not! If your craving BBQ, don't exactly feel like being around loud city people or crowded spaces and happen to own a car go for it! I enjoyed my meal and would go back to try more.
There is no wait. You walk in, order at the counter, grab a seat, food is dropped off at your table and then all that's left is to GO TO TOWN ON THAT BBQ! Hands dirty, greasy face and BBQ sauce all over your chin. Who cares, it's the only way to do BBQ baby! ;-) -

While some folks like to order sandwiches such as the pulled pork, I measure a BBQ joint by its mastery of meat-on-the-bone. Be it pork or beef ribs or even the chicken, meat has the most flavor and juices when cooked and served on the bone. At Jimmy's I ordered a 2-meat combo that included a half-rack of huge pork ribs and a full chicken leg (thigh and drum). It came with a choice of two sides. I selected the mac-n-cheese and the collard greens, reluctantly passing up the whipped sweet potatoes.
I thought the counter service was friendly, and the food came fast enough. It was not cheap! $17 for my platter and sides (however, there was enough left over for another meal). The collards were nicely seasoned with hot spice, but they were more bitter than normal. Did not enjoy them. Mac'n'cheese was creamy and tasty, I ate it all. The chicken was fair. I think it was a tad overcooked, it was not juicy or greasy. The ribs were very good. Huge, meaty, juicy, with great flavor on their own and great sauces on the side.
A fellow diner noted "I grew up on pulled pork BBQ in and around Memphis, Tennessee, so my frame of reference is defined by the predominate style in that area. The pulled pork at Jimmy's tasted good, but was slightly dry, due primarily to the fact that the meat was shredded more than it should have been. Leaving more of the meat in small chunks might help. The "hot" table sauce was only mild, in my opinion. That being said, I give it a 7/10. I will definitely return, although I might opt for the ribs next time. They looked mighty good."
For me, Tommy Gunn's in Manyunk sets the standard for BBQ. JImmy's was good, but well short of the sublime BBQ experience at Tommy Gunn's. I give the physical space a 7, the sides a 6, the chicken a 5, and the ribs a 7.5. I would go back, it's a worthy pit stop but as FEEB3 notes, it's not "destination" dining that calls for a road trip.

I've had some great bbq across the country, and Jimmy's just doesn't cut it.
Their smoked meats tend to be dry and tough. This goes for the chicken and pork. Sides aren't much better. The collards were under-cooked and way too bitter. Beans are nothing special. The cole slaw and potato salad are both good.
The sauces are good, but you're going to need alot of it to compensate for the meat; not a good thing.
Even more depressing, prices are high due to Jimmy's location on the Main Line. So you get prices that are higher than some of the rib joints you'll find on your way to the Jersey shore or on South Street, but quality that is not comparable. -

Came here for dinner during a business trip and the smokey smell as I entered had my mouth watering? Could this be a saucy BBQ diamond in the proverbial Great Valley/Malvern Rough?
Eh, it was just okay.
The pulled pork was very dry and flavorless. The brisket was decent, but only with copious amounts of the Spicy BBQ sauce. I was just so surprised the smoke smell that inundates this place doesn't somehow make it into the meat. Maybe if I took a bite and inhaled through my mouth...
Also, I had a side of collard greens (okay) and baked beans (also okay).
Definitely won't be back here my next time visiting the area. -

Sweet Smoky Goodness. I mean, really. I moved to Downingtown from Jersey, where I had access to the Wood Pit BBQ, which is some of the best BBQ in Jersey. I had resigned myself to a BBQ-less life out here in PA, when I heard about Jimmy's. THANK GOD. I can have peace in my life now. I don't have to sit and think about BBQ and how far away good BBQ is and when will I get my next BBQ fix? Because Jimmy's is a short drive away.
The bacon. Let's discuss the bacon, which consists of meaty slabs strung together by smoky fat, in which you want bury you face. Or the brisket, so tender, I want to tuck it in to its little bread bed and then eat it oh-so-lovingly. The sauce, particularly the bold sauce, is excellent. And of course, sweet and savory baked beans. And whipped sweet potatoes, all caramel and brown sugar and deliciousness.
I will be back. Oh, I will be back. -
Review from Gregory D.
I had dinner there tonight and the only word I can come up with is "meh". I found the brisket and pulled pork didn't have a lot of flavor and they were quite dry. I had to juice them up a bit with the sauces (which were alright). The chorizo was tasty but also a bit dry.
The goods: unsweetened iced tea, friendly counter service. The bads: a bit on the pricy side (three meat combo and a drink for 20 bones), food was just ok. -

Very yummy! We've come here a few times and everything I've tried is great! I love getting the pulled pork and 2 sides. All the sides I've tried have been good. I love collard greens and theirs are slightly spicy in a good way. The mac and cheese is great as is the cornbread (slightly sweet). Service is relatively fast.

I have to say I am a bit under whelmed by Jimmy's so far. It wasn't bad but it wasn't as good as I expected either. I ordered a full rack of Ribs, some smoked Bacon (after hearing everyone rave about it I had to try it), Mac n Cheese and Cornbread.
Okay to start, the number of ribs was like wow. There were a lot of them and they had a wonderful Smokey aroma. I could not wait to dig in. Now the underwhelming part, they were not the tenderest ribs I have had, in fact they were a bit chewy. They had a good flavor, and I liked the BBQ sauces, but the meat definitely did not fall off the bone. The Smoked Bacon, hmmmmmmmmmm, it tasted great, but for $3.50 the very few morsels you get just weren't worth it. I was really shocked at just how little you get. The Mac'n cheese was so-so, it was not that creamy at all and nothing to write home about. But the BIGGEST disappointment was the corn bread. I got one small, extremely DRY, piece for $2.50. I love cornbread and maybe it was a bad day or something but I was very disappointed.
I plan on going back at some point. I do want to try the Brisket sandwich and the chicken. So I am willing to give Jimmy's a second shot. -

Places like this are the reason I'm fat. I came here last week and ordered the family platter to get a nice sample of ribs, pork and brisket. It also came with some sides and it came with 4 sides all of which were excellent. We had the sweet potato, cole slaw, beans and mac and cheese. All were excellent and very nice.

My favorite barbecue restaurant in the Philly area is still Sweet Lucy's, but Jimmy's BBQ is a close second.
Like Sweet Lucy's, it's the type of place you'd miss if you were just driving down the street looking for a place to eat. As soon as you walk in, you can smell the barbecue smoke in the air which is nice. The guy behind the counter was really nice and helpful as well. The meat itself is perfect. It comes out just with the dry rub on it--no sauce. They bring three sauces to the table--a hot bbq sauce, a sweet bbq sauce (my favorite), and a vinegar based sauce.
The sides are decent as well. I've only tried the potato salad and cole slaw, but they were both quite good. My boyfriend really liked the mashed sweet potatoes and my mom thought the collard greens were a bit spicy. Definitely worth a try.Listed in: Around the 'Burbs

Jimmys is a victim of the fact that Ive already met and fell in love with another mistress. Her name is Sweet Lucys. Had I not met her already, Id be raving about Jimmy's BBQ.
Its good stuff. BBQ done really well, and for me, its so close. My only problem with my relationship with Sweet Lucy, is that its a long distance. Its good to know I can get a quick BBQ fix, without a lengthy commute. Aside from SL, nothing else can compare in the burbs, at least , nothing fast food.
I wasnt super hungry, so I got a pulled pork sandwich and side of mac and cheese. The meat was very good, but they serve it dry. There are sauces on the table to load it up. I guess this could be a good thing , but I found it a little lacking. The Mac and cheese didnt beat SL either but it was good. They made it almost exactly like I do at home, with elbow macaroni and a breadcrumb topping. Again Ill add, that if there wasnt SL in my life, Id be raving right now. Im already planning to go back and try Jimmys other wares. You gotta love a place that offers 1/4 pound of smoked bacon as an appetizer. Everything else I saw on the menu (ribs, chicken, sausage and brisket) made my mouth water.
The prices were a little disappointing. It was $13 for the sandwich with a refillable drink (BTW their Tea was awesome, its the only area where they beat SL). It was a whopping $4 for a little cup of mac and cheese, almost as much as the sandwich. If Id gotten a meal it would have set me back over $20. Not that its not worth it, but its something that would keep regular joes like me from more frequent visits. (however, considering this is the main line, Jimmy is doing the right thing.).
I didnt want Sweet Lucys to cast a shadow over my experience or my review, but it was impossible not to compare. Its hard to keep afloat in this economy, and I hope Jimmys succeeds. Ill do my part. Ill be back and Ill tell others to do the same. However, If SL opens a location in the area, I will be saying, "Jimmy who?" -
Review from Brian M.
Carnivores and others take note-Jimmy's BBQ has great BBQ ribs, pulled pork, beef brisket and chicken. All were smoked (yes smoked, not grilled or baked) using hickory and cherry woods. This is as authentic as you can find outside of Memphis. And the prices were darn reasonable.
After a few trips into this new BBQ joint here's my take...
Jimmy's ribs are generously-sized pork ribs. Baby back ribs are not on the menu, as expected for Memphis-style BBQ. The rib meat was fall-off-the-bone tender with a great smokey flavor, deep but not over-powering. The half rack portion came with five large ribs and a choice of two side dishes (offerings were mac and cheese, smoked beans, collard greens, cole slaw, mashed sweet potato or a "dirty" corn salad). I've had the smoked beans, cole slaw and sweet potato-all were very good and definitely homemade.
The pulled pork (I had it as a sandwich) was juicy, smokey and full of pork-goodness. I've also had the BBQ chicken and the (beef) brisket. Both were great; juicy and packed full of flavor. And lest I forget, for a more decadent treat-you have to try Jimmy's home-smoked slab bacon-OMG! Jimmy's meats are dry-rubbed and bottles of Jimmy's homemade tangy sauce are provided on each table. Other offerings such as pulled chicken and brisket sandwiches, BBQ sweet and hot sausages looked great and according to the folks seated nearby, were delicious.
Jimmy's decor is simple but pleasant, but that's what a BBQ joint should be. The emphasis is definitely on the food. BBQ fans will love it, most others and kids will too. Vegetarians, well...
Save yourself a road trip to Memphis and go to Jimmy's.Listed in: Good Easy Eats on the Main…

If you have not tried Jimmy's BBQ, you do not know what you are missing. I heard about it from my barber at Charlie's Barbershop and they did not mislead me. This is the real deal when it comes to BBQ.
I've had a good amount of the menu, and everything is really good. I especially love the brisket, ribs, and bacon. The brisket is so tender and succulent, and the ribs are big, juicy, and have great flavor. If anything you must try the bacon, it is hands down the best bacon I've ever had! It just melts in your mouth. The wings are also good and they are big too! The amount of smoke that is imparted into all of the meats is just the right amount, it's not overpowering or lacking at all.
The food is great, and the service is even better. Everyone is friendly and if you have a question they are more than willing to answer it. If the place is not too busy, they will even serve you your meal, no need to stand around waiting for it.
I love barbecue and am thankful to have such a great place close by. Trust me, just try this place once and you will be hooked.

I agree that this place doesn't look like much from the outside. In fact, it's kind of hidden in a strip plaza type place. The service is great here. You order at the counter and sit down to eat. There's always a lot of seating and there's a sink off to the side to wash your hands (I love this idea). The people who work there are very friendly and fast.
I would strongly recommend the ribs! They are so good, very savory and tasty. We have tried the smoked bacon (slightly too salty), sausage, pulled pork (ok), mac and cheese, smoked beans, sweet corn bread and potato salad. Of all these things, the ribs are by far the best! I don't live that close, but if I did, I would be here more often.
The awesome sink give the place half a star so this is a 4.5 stars! -

A friend of mine and I decided to try this place out. We went for an early lunch, and there was no one else there. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They helped us make decisions, answered our questions patiently and were friendly throughout our interaction.
I had the brisket sandwich. Although I could not find the smoke ring (I'll admit this might be my fault as I am a novice when it comes to BBQ), the flavor was still smokey. Unfortunately, the meat was a little drier than I was hoping for. But the flavor was delicious. The BBQ sauce that they have on the table in squirt bottles was also very delicious.
My friend ordered the collard greens, which were decent (snuck a bite), but her mac and cheese was truly amazing. It was very creamy and cheesy, a heart attack waiting to happen - just the way it is meant to be! My corn bread was only so-so. Big portion of the corn bread, but it was a bit dry. Although I have been spoiled corn bread wise.Comment from Jim M. of Jimmy's BBQ 11/28/2009

I love me some BBQ. I've been there 3 times this month and all 3 teams the food was great. The pulled pork was moist, smokey and pretty darn good for being cooked North of the Mason-Dixon line. The mac and cheese is very good, the collard greens were good as well. I haven't tried anything other then the pulled pork and pulled chicken. Overall, pretty good place to eat!!
PS. not a big fan of the sauces, but if the meat is good, you don't need no stinkin' sauce!! -

One thing I've learned growing up in Philadelphia: Sometimes, the best places for food (I'm *not* talking about fine dining, I'm talking about FOOD) can look like crap from the outside. The best Cheesesteaks I've had was from a place I can't remember (and has since closed down) from when I was a kid in Juniata, across the street from Acme.
Anyway, this brings me to Jimmy's. It occupies a corner of a strip mall, and the only sign it has outside is a vinyl banner hooked up to the front. It would be VERY easy to miss. However, BBQ - good BBQ - Is something in short supply out in the Exton area. So, the family and I decided to give it a try.
Simply put, this is the best BBQ I've had in a long time. The brisket was OK, a little on the drier side but still pull-apart tender. The pork BBQ is extremely good, as is the chicken. The Mac and Cheese is also the way its supposed to be, as are the BBQ beans.
The inside is pretty minimal. They have a big screen TV and some picnic tables and chairs - To me, that's a good thing. Its a BBQ joint, and I get the feel, smell, and taste of one inside.
Just be careful - If you like BBQ, you may find yourself over there every couple of weeks needing a fix... :) -

Came back and got the smoked wings, hot wings and some more of the smoked bacon. This place is turning out to be my favourite place for lunch in this area.
The smoked bacon, BTW, is one of the best things I've put into my mouth. I think if the outside on the fat part is crispy, it'll be even better (Jimmy, are you reading this?)
Smoked wings were really good. It's dry rubbed. The rub spice and smoky flavor add to the chicken flavor. Yes, these wings really taste like chicken (not like bland, tasteless way...but the robust chicken flavor that seems to be a bit lost these days). I didn't need any sauce eating them and they were perfect companion for the smoked bacons (probably not for your health).
The hot wings weren't as good as the smoked wings. But then I don't really like the hot wings that much. The sauce was traditional, buffalo style sauce--vinegary, almost watery sauce that's not too spicy. They are grilled, not fried. My friend who is pretty well-versed in wings thought that they were good.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I'm with Steve B.- it's not always about what the place looks like from the outside. Seriously, you would miss this place if you weren't really looking for it. I hope that they create a following to make sure that they stay in business.
My husband has been to most of the good/ great BBQ places in the Carolinas. We can't even get to our Weber grill with all the snow that has it anchored in the far corner of our deck to make our own BBQ, which is why we made the quick jaunt to Jimmy's.
After reading everyone's thoughts, we did eat in and tried the bacon, the brisket sandwich, and a plate of the brisket/ pulled pork with collard greens and mac & cheese. Unlike some of the eaters, our brisket was moist, fall apart tender, smoky and just the right amount of fat (from the brisket cap) and meat. The pulled pork for us (this time) was slightly dried out with some tasty burnt ends mixed in. The collard greens were wonderful, slightly sweet, salty and spicy with some great pot liquor that would have been great with some boiled potatoes. The smoked bacon was great! Thank goodness for only a 1/4 lb of the smoky meaty fatty goodness. It would be great to have as base of a smoky corn chowder or clam chowder and gives me ideas for meals later on. Oh, and the sauces...house, vinegar and hot. We really liked that hot one; spicy, sweet with some nice smoky heat on the end.
It was really good BBQ for snowiest February this area has ever seen...and we'll be back soon for more. -

We were very excited when Jimmy's opened up as we did not have a good BBQ restaurant in the area. As someone who grew up with Southern BBQ, my only opportunity to get good BBQ was when I went down south to visit my family. Not anymore!
I have 2 favorites, the smoked wings and the pulled pork. The smoked wings have great flavor and a little bit of burn on them, which only enhanced the yumminess. The pulled pork is not dry at all and I could drink their BBQ sauce (it's that good!) Their cornbread is average as is their macaroni and cheese, but their beans are good and they have this dirty corn salad which is quite good as well. -

Only one trip to Jimmy's and I'm a fan. I think they have to work out a few kinks on customer service (friendly is not necessarily efficient)...but heck, I'm about the food. And the food was great. I went for a sampler plate for the first trip, and left licking my chops and rubbin' my belly.
The brisket and the BBQ beans were absolutely delicious. -

Redbones this is not but it's a hell of a lot closer to home and the bbq is pretty good: moist and flavorful. The pulled pork is decent and the ribs well seasoned and generously portioned. It does the job when I can't get to MA (or down South, for that matter). However, if you're a Lenny's fan, you might find the pulled pork to be subpar.

Jimmy's BBQ serves delicious, real, slow-cooked barbecue (pork, beef and chicken). We found the service to be very friendly and the prices reasonable.

First trip in, I brought a friend and we said "feed us, but L-M said we had to have the bacon". My experience redefined pork fat ecstasy for me. I now bow slightly in the direction of Exton every time I hear the word Bacon.
Been there 6 times since May, each time with a friend who has loved it too. I make everyone I bring eat the bacon. You catch the smoke way out in the parking lot. You see three simple letters "B-B-Q". The smoker is the size of a semi. I couldn't tell you if there was a picture on the walls or music playing. Long tables, rolls of Scott towels, hickory in the air, three bottles of sauce and Bacon.
So, I am like salivating and wondering if I can get to Exton before he closes. I have eaten the entire menu and the sides. Don't expect anything green, or much for desert. It is all simple, honest, roll up your sleeves and wash your hair when you get home BBQ. Almost impossible to find in PA, never mind Exton. Its all really good, but a little uneven at times. I once caught dry brisket and undersmoked wings. Best baked beans I ever ate, slaw, mac n chz, mashed sweets, collards and Smoked Bacon.
Did I mention the Bacon?
