I would agree with previous posters that there's nothing INCREDIBLY about Jimmy John's, and the hype doesn't make a ton of sense.
However, they do very speedily make a fairly tasty sandwich. And they're conveniently located right next door to my house (so maybe I should rate it more highly to draw you over to visit me, but I'll be truthful).
I had a BLT sub this afternoon for lunch, and i enjoyed it. It didn't have the standard problem of way too much or way too little bacon, so points for that. The people didn't seem to think I was odd when I stared at the menu helplessly for a few minutes while trying to decide. I'll definitely end up going back, and if you have to stop and grab a quick lunch, this isn't a bad place to do it.
I don't know why I love Jimmy John's so much, I just do. I can totally relate on a rational level to people's complaints about their lack of menu variety and the corporate chainness of the place, but on an irrational level, I just don't care. Maybe it's the mayo. Or the bread. Maybe it's the tasty Provolone cheese. Maybe it's because I always get the #6 without all the weird green stuff on it. All I know is that I plunk down my $4.51 there a lot.
Oh Jimmy Johns... How I miss thee!!
There's just something about the bread. My favorites: The #5 and #1.
Please come to NYC.
I am not a sandwich gal, but this one was really good. When you walk in the smell of fresh baked bread wafts through the air...you order and by the time you pay your sandwich is ready.
I had the beach club and it was great! Be sure to ask them to cut your sandwich in half, as it is hard to manuver.
Reasonably priced, clean bathroom...good experience. Great place for a tight lunch break!
There are something like 237 Jimmy John's sub shops scattered in Ann Arbor, but this is probably the one I visited the most. Jimmy John's is great because it is cheap , fast (they make a sub in under a minute, literally), and consistent. When I was a particularly poor undergrad (poor undergrad...it almost sounds like an oxymoron now that I am a grad student at Stanford) I used to by the salmi and capicola slim jim, which also contained swiss cheese (just those three items and bread...no topping!) and cost something like $2.25. Man those were the days. I remember the week after my sophomore year when I was working as a paid lab assistant (before I got my first paycheck) I was particularly poor and would buy day old bread for $0.25 apiece and eat that with a large cup of water and Boone's Farm wine and that would be my dinner (why do I keep putting stuff in parenthesis?).
Anyway that was a weird summer. I was splitting a one bedroom sublet with my friend Grant for $375/month total. Yeah...I was poor. That was also the summer my parents had this huge marriage-threatening argument so, while they were never particularly generous with the funds to begin with, I got like no financial help whatsoever. It was actually pretty liberating, to be living in a hell hole poor as dirt with a good friend, getting drunk every night on $1.75 bottle wine.
Funny story...one time the power went out. My friend Grant is a huge video game fan - he used to play them until his fingers bled - so I always came home to find him playing some game. Well this one day I came home and he was sitting on the porch reading a book. So I was really confused. He told me the power was out. but it wasn't just out, it had been TURNED OFF. Except what was funny was that the guy we were subletting from was supposed to pay our electric bill. Interestingly, the other apartment in the house (the upstairs, basically) had power. Only our power was turned off. Eventually, we found out from our heroin addict house mate (yes, he was actually a heroin addict) that it we HE who did not pay the electric bill. So our heroin-addict housemate forgets to pay the freakin' electric bill and OUR power gets turned off. W...T...F.
Anyhoo, we (the three of us) finally figured out how to get that bill paid and everything turned out ok. We actually got to be decent friends with the heroin-addict, who we eventually named Hoss.
In conclusion, Jimmy John's rules.
PROS:
1. Quick. By the time you finish paying, you will probably have your sandwich in hand.
2. Good variety. Something for everyone, including vegetarians. Lots of meat combos. Tuna too.
3. Cheap. Can escape with sandwich, drink and chips for under $6.
4. Many locations nearby (South Univ, Packard, S. State) and open until 3am.
CONS:
1. Similar to a Subway sandwich (similar bread, too much lettuce and not enough meat) or one you may be able to make yourself.
2. Tends to glop on the mayo. Even if you say "easy."
3. 8" sub may not be filling enough, so best to order Giant Club.
RECOMMENDED:
Any of the Giant Clubs or 8" if you want a light snack.
AVOID:
Plain Slims options. Too small, might as well bump up to 8".
ATMOSPHERE:
Largely take-out. But well-lit with lots of tables or counters to eat at.
PRICE RANGE:
around $3.50 for a sub
BASED ON:
2 visits (2 people each time)
About as "gourmet" as a Denny's. However, a no frills approach to sub delivery that is a reliable source of food in under 20 minutes.
For all intensive purposes, Jimmy Johns is a corporate powerhouse that is cold, calculating, cold cuts. The franchise is very big on speedy delivery and service. Admittedly, it is rather refreshing to order something and receive it in a timely fashion, instead of waiting an hour for a pizza that took only six minutes to make.
The menu never changes, ever. This irks me, as a fan of the menu items the chef throws on the specials menu after walking in from the market with a handful of fresh ingredients. It appears that Jimmy Johns often sacrifices innovation for the aforementioned quickness. The worst part seems to be that the menu can appear incredibly lacking, and a few new items would be nice.
Very basic sandwiches, served on a chewy French baguette. All are available in a regular size and a "club" size which features double cheese and meat. Standards such as roast beef, tuna salad, turkey, etc. They usually have some hokey name and description, but you won't be confused.
The highlight of the menu, and seemingly the only thing worth ordering, is the Italian Night Club. Cappicola, salami, ham, provolone, onion, tomato, and lettuce. Also, a vinaigrette of sorts tops it off. Definitely order the additional hot peppers (free), as they compliment the sub well.
Skip the combo, don't go for the chips or cookie. The chips are kettle cooked and average. Jalapeno variety tastes nothing like its namesake.
A tip, though. Day old bread is available for well under a dollar. Use it for crostinis, bruschetta, or bread pudding!
I seriously don't know that the fuss about Jimmy Johns is. I would take Quiznos or Potbellies any day. They're big on being quick, but it can be very intimidating if you're there during slow times and there's 5 people making your one sandwich. It's ok, but nothing really sticks in my mind as being noteworthy.
Basically this place is a slightly cheaper subway alternative with some funny crap on the walls. Not a bad lunch option at all though with a good location on campus (I went to the one on South University) The bread seemed higher quality than Subway. I can also vouch for their motto of being crazy fast since they had my sandwich done before I could even get around the corner to pick it up after ordering.
I've tried Jimmy John's a handful of times and always have been left unsatisfied. The first time I had rock-hard bread, which became soggy from the mayo shortly after I started eating. The second time I got wheat bread, which had a peculiar odor. They are scanty on all their toppings, with the exception of lettuce. My sandwich was supposed to have avocado in it, and all I saw was a slight smear of avocado in between two pieces of lettuce. I couldn't even finish my sandwich because it tasted so bland, smelled oddly, and was basically lettuce in between two slices of stinky bread. I don't understand the hype. I'll take Dibella's, or heck, even Subway over this garbage any day.
Nothing 'gourmet' about this place. It used to be a reliable and quick place to find nourishment, until I discovered Amer's, which is about four times better and not a whole lot more expensive. I did still venture here occasionally, but it made me sick once and they kept screwing up my order. Haven't been back since.
I have to agree with most of what Dave said. They make good sandwiches very quickly. I've got no stories about heroin addicted housemates however.
Why is this in the pizza section? As far as I know Jimmy John's is only deli sub sandwiches. Yelp you need to fix this little mistake
i really just don't understand the appeal of jimmy john's. if you put some salt and pepper on cardboard it'd taste pretty much just like jimmy john's. why is this place so ubiquitous?
Freakin delicious! Jimmy Johns is one of the reasons I miss the Midwest! All of their Giant Club Sandwiches are very good! I especially like the Smoked Ham, the Country Club, and the Beach Club. Their club sandwiches makes me drool and their hearty, thick, perfectly moist bread makes my tummy oh so happy. Obviously, I skip their boring french bread. Their avocado spread always tastes fresh and its never too mushy! Even their mayo tastes better than at other places! The fact that they are open late night and that they deliver are definite advantages too! No sandwich shops in Cali deliver....boo hoo!
