I had a vicious hunger for BBQ and more than once I had walked past Jim N Nicks in 5 Points.  Of course Birmingham has no shortage of BBQ joints.  It seems the Alabama equivalent of peanut butter n jelly.  This is not a bad or wrong thing.  So far Jim N Nick's is the best example of Alabama BBQ which I have discovered.

Come in, sit your butt down and order up some delicious BBQ.  At Jim N Nick's the operative word is sweet.  Everything is sweet.  Whether you are talking about the divine sweet tea, the immaculate sweet corn muffins which come with every meal, or the syrupy sweet BBQ, this place may be a diabetic's nightmare.

I still prefer Texas BBQ, and the service was a little slow, but for an easy lunch in Birmingham a loaded baked potato here is a sure winner.

The Chocolate Cream Pie! Yum Fever!  Good BBQ, but ridiculously sweet.  They started us out with a basket of complimentary seemingly-cornbread mufffins, which were so sweet they were like cake.  Each muffin had a crunchy sugar shell.  The BBQ sandwiches are good.  I'm a fan.  The mac and cheese is really good.  It's all perhaps a bit too sweet, which i knew going into, after reading other yelpers.  The pie hit the spot.

The key to Jim and Nick's, and indeed any barbecue place worth its salt, is to request the 'cue unsauced and add the sauces you like albeit sparingly.  Jim and Nick's pulled is good "city" barbecue.  Their habanero sauce is delicious, especially cut with some of the vinegar-based sauce.

Great BBQ.
It's a chain and a little pricey but it's one of the best places I've ever been to.
The sides are generous and very tasty. I stopped here with some friends on the way to Florida and it was great. We got seated right away even though the place was packed. The waitress was really nice and quick.

They bring out these cheese biscuits which are small but amazing. They even brought us a refill the second we had snapped up the last one in the basket.

The food was great. Our friend who loves BBQ said her sliced beef brisket was the best she ever had and my girlfriend said that she thought the pulled pork was awesome. My sausage sandwich was pretty good as well. Two links, served on sourdough and smothered in sauce found themselves quickly devoured. We all agreed it was an excellent place to eat and very good for a BBQ joint. We would stop here again in a heatbeat!

Wow. I was in Birmingham over the weekend for a wedding, but my primary objective was to eat as much BBQ as possible. Jim n Nicks was my first stop and it did not disappoint. I ordered the Pulled Pork and Beef Brisket combo. A massive plate of food arrived heaped with meat and sauce. The two sides (baked beans, potato salad) and cheese biscuits were incredible. My mouth is actually watering as I write this review. The meat was super tender, but the sauces really set me off. I threw some of their habanero sauce over the regular BBQ and I was in hog heaven. I used most of my napkins to wipe the sweat off my face.

As I understand it, Jim n Nicks has built itself into a small chain of 20 or so locations throughout the South. The 11th street location in the Five Points neighborhood is not the original restaurant, but Jim n Nicks did originate in Birmingham. Although the Five Points location has a chain restaurant look to it, it's very comfortable and they played nothing but old blues tunes like Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, and Elmore James. If I ever go back to Birmingham, I'm definitely going to visit the original restaurant.

Great food.  They are always incredibly busy which is a good sign.  I would advise you to go either for early dinner or later dinner to avoid the crowd.  I highly recommend this wonderful place.  Try the riblets.

When I come back to my hometown to visit, Jim N Nicks is on the list as a must have. We feast on great BBQ, salads, biscuits and sweet tea.  We always had great service and we usually leave with t-shirts and bbq sauce to take back to California friends.  Wish I could get there more often!

We had just gotten off a long plane ride and were tired and hungry. Both a lady on our plane and the hotel concierge recommended this place.

The corn rolls were heavenly--I could have eaten a couple baskets of those. We both ordered the pulled pork sandwich and beers.

What a good way to kick off a fun Birmingham visit!

OMG!!!  I'm going to explode...I was full halfway into the meal but I could not stop eating.  Great place, great food, great people (staff was top notch and Kelly the bartender was great) great atmosphere even if it is a chain.  I had the two meat platter with baby backs and brisket, sides of beans, apples, and greens (they threw these in)  More beer selections than I have ever seen in a BBQ joint but why not...everyone has their own taste.  The ribs were smokin, no pun intended.  Tender, great smoky flavor, just the way I like em.  Brisket could be the best I ever had, again great undertone of smoke and wood and tender is an understatement.  Sauce was perfect for the meat.  Too many people get wrapped around a pole over the flavor of the sauce, its the combination of everything involved that makes great Q...word of caution, their habenaro sauce is extremely spicy....go easy to start and add to taste.  Overall , I had a great experience and I like the part of town it's in.  Lord knows I needed a walk after that grub session...I will definatley go back on my next trip to Birmingham.

Best BBQ I've eaten in Birmingham.  Others agree, as the original location has now spread to several states in the South and West.  Fortunately, the quality has not declined.

My favorite location is the one on Oxmoor Road, which I believe is the original location, although the one on Southside (11th Ave South) is nearly as good.

Favorite items: the cheese biscuits (what the previous reviewer referred to as corn cakes) which recently became all-you-can-eat (dangerous! :-), the pulled pork, and the baby back ribs.  The latter has really been growing on me and I have ordered them the last several times I have visited.  Also love their brisket, creamed spinach, and unsweet tea.  For something different, try the company pig salad - a fresh garden salad with pulled pork on top.  Sounds weird, tastes wonderful.

The traditional favorite around here is Dreamland BBQ, and I'll be ostracized for saying it, but Dreamland to me is not even top three BBQ in this town.  Their sauce is far inferior, and their ribs vary greatly in quality depending on the night.  Jim N Nicks is consistently good every time, and offers more variety as well.

I've tried more BBQ restaurants and shacks in this town than I can remember, and Jim N Nicks is still my favorite.  Don't be fooled by the polished, chain-restaurant look - this is genuine, good old fashioned BBQ Birmingham style.  The only place in the entire state that I like better than this is Big Bob Gibson's up in Decatur, but in Birmingham with a BBQ craving, you can't do any better than Jim N Nicks.

Jim N' Nick's is my favorite bbq place ever.  It's my boyfriend's favorite restaurant in Birmingham, so we come fairly often.  The atmosphere isn't anything special, but the food makes up for it.   I usually get the bbq chicken, but the babyback ribs are great too.  Good sauce, tender meat.  All the trimmings I've tasted were good as well.  The cheddar biscuits (really corn bread muffins) are wonderful, as are their pies.  When any of my out of town friends come to visit, I have to bring them here... when my parents came for my graduation, they liked it so much we ate here two meals in a row.
