If you've ever heard "Riverwalk Jazz" on National Public Radio, it's broadcast live from this little bar attached to the San Antonio Hyatt hotel.
This is one of the brightest culture spots in San Antonio, and certainly on the River Walk. Austin's got a lot more live music, but Jim and his musicians are the REAL DEAL.
I'm not a fan of Dixieland or even jazz, really - but their musicianship is so incredible that none of that matters. Jim's cornet is just the start, glorious as it is, the band is all-pro, the riffs wash over you, each better than the last. The radio show is good, but doesn't hold a candle to the live experience.
I love that they keep jazz history alive, too, and make it interesting with backstory. Jim has a thing for Bix Beiderbecke; try a drinking game on mentions of Bix (if you can afford it, and aren't driving home).
WELL worth the cover and the stiff drink prices; it's a treat to hear music of this quality in a small bar venue.

This is definitely a great way to spend a night on the boardwalk, even if you are not too into jazz. The musicianship itself will impress you. I played the trumpet for several years and I was impressed by every musician. I can't believe the cover charge was only $6.50. In LA it would have been more like $20. The drinks were $10 each, but were made well (strong and tasted great). The ambience fit the event. Downsides- the food was so-so, and we got stuck with a crappy server. If I ever go back to San Antonio, I will definitely go back here.

There are two areas to the Landing; a patio with live music, or the indoor area featuring the Jim Cullum Band or the touring artists. We were there to see the JCB and had a fun time. There is a $6.50 'artists charge' per person, in addition to a one drink minimum. Our drink menu didn't have any prices, but each selection used top shelf liquor so we weren't surprised to receive a $70 ticket after ordering five drinks. Beware the Riverwalk Rita - it's very strong, deceptively so. If you want a bit of a buzz but don't want to buy more than one drink, this is a good choice. Worth the $10, and if you sip, you'll be working on it for a while.

Sat outside on the river with friends to enjoy a cocktail and the excellent jazz. Friendly service, good music, European ambiance. Really, the only drawback is the mosquitoes.
