I think it's evil to eat innocent little vegetables alive! You cruel, vile vegans!
Joking. Actually I am a pretty voracious carnivore, and I love Jills. I haven't had extended experience with this place, but the kale, mango, pineapple, chia (yes like chia pet) smoothie is fantastic. Also sampled some of their muffins and tasty sun dried tomato/flax snax.
I agree that it is unfortunately pricey, but the health (or at least idea of health) will keep me going back there if I'm in the area.
I am shocked at the 5 star rating, SHOCKED! I love raw/ live food. And I have gone to raw, live, vegan, vegetarian restaurants all over the country, and this restaurant is so fully over priced it's amazing!
Sure the staff is wonderful, and they are without question. The first time I went, and spent $16, I did a sampler. A choice of 3 or 4 of their cold, glass case salads, and I left hungry. Very small portions. I paid $16.
The second time I went, I ordered the open-faced hummus sandwich. I received a single piece of bread with half a radish, a baby carrot, and 2 slices of cucumber over a table spoon of hummus. FOR $11 DOLLARS!!!
Read it again.
$11 dollars is outrageous.
I know the live-food/vegan/vegetarian movement has left you unsatiated and hanging on for dear life; but there are other options out there for you. And they are not far. Park Slope, the East Village, the West Village; and they won't have you fund their meditative vacations. No, they will ask that you try their lifestyle, and sample their beliefs. Without ego or ambition. Just with hopes you will see their bend on food, and offer you an alternative.
I LOVE this place. H and I tried the leafy vegetables rolls, beets, hijiki salad, carrot halveh, and pecan blondies -- all of which were delicious!
I highly recommend the carrot halva - it was sweet but not too sweet. It contained grounded pecans, shredded coconut, raisins, spices, agave nectar, and of course, carrot. It tasted like spicy carrot cake but without the butter and bad stuff.
The hijiki salad was perfectly seasoned with ginger and sesame. Its definitely savory goodness.
Kind of small, but I find it quaint. I wouldn't go here for parties larger than 4.
MMMMmmm my new favorite vegan place.
UPDATE 1/15/09: Jill's has closed this week. Jill told me she might be relocating to Manhattan, but will continue doing her cleanse program via delivery through the cafe's website which will still be running. Send her an email for more info.
Once upon a time, I used to be a health fanatic. A strange cross between a vegan-vegetarian and a pizza-ice cream eater. I've since then become much more lenient in my eating habits, but I did learn a lot about eating healthfully during those years. So I can only chalk up my hesitation about going into Jill's (which is a few doors down from me) to my feeling guilty about letting chocolate back into my life.
Seriously, the food here is delicious. Very clean, as my sister would say. (For those of you who don't know my sister, please note that this is a compliment of the highest degree regarding food). Order the combo with the kale salad, quinoa salad, and avocado. Or the brown rice curry. It's all organic and raw, so you don't even have to feel bad about having a little dessert. You can order your meals to go or eat in, although there is no scene here whatsoever--the place is always practically empty. And very clean.
This place is brand-spanking new. Well, not spanking since it advertises that it's "kindly cooked food." So, it's brand-sparkling new. I was looking for something different, cool, and healthy. I saw the chalkboard that said "Now Open!" and it also stated that it was vegan. I thought, Wow! I don't have to bother flipping to the "vegetarian" area of the menu! And I walked right in.
It's small; it's modern; it's filled with delicious looking biscotti and truffly looking things. It also has a killer (oops!) homemade soup that I drank down like it was, well, a drink.
It's pricy by my standards, but I'm cheap. And I wasn't thinking MEAL, so my price threshold was even lower. Still, I gave up the $5 for the soup, and I enjoyed it tremendously. I took a take-out menu for your convenience. Here are a few things of note"
*Mini Raw Pizzas with Sundried Tomato Basil and Olives. $8.50
*A Mixed Green Salad with fennel and grapefruit. ditto. (This sounded really good, but I only had $7 with me and I didn't want to charge that little.)
*Black Rice with Spring Veggies and Curried Yam Sauce. $12.50
*Strawberry Tiramisu $7 (I almost got this, but I wanted to stick to food food. But tempting!)
*Carrot Halva $1.25
All of those items are raw. Uncooked. There are a couple of cooked items (a risotto, for instance).
Stop in and give them a try. It's good for single eaters or for small groups (2-4). I'll be back for more at some point, although I don't think my stroller will fit well in there. I'll have to go at a major down-time.
NB: The web address listed is for the owner's Nutritional Cleanse, not for the cafe.
This place is definitely my favorite cafe! Not only is the live food so delicious, but the people who work there are really nice. I have a big sweet tooth, so this place caters to my desire for raw live sweetness.
P.S. I'm in love with the thumbprint brownies... oh! So good!
I am a huge bacon eater, so normally spend a little more time at the neighborhood butcher (Staubitz - highly recommended). However, I live around the corner from this place and they have EXCELLENT food. I am eating a dish of the brown rice curry salad right now, and it's superb. It actually would not be made better by the addition of bacon, if you can believe that. Unlike some vegan food I've had, the "cook" (sorry, I know it's mostly raw) at this place has a good handle on using enough acid, so the food actually tastes good without being too salty. I think it was probably lemon or lime juice in the rice salad, and it was perfect.
I have also had their chocolate cake, and it is really, really delicious.
It's true that the prices are a tad steep, but I think it's worth it because they obviously are using really nice ingredients. The women who staff the counter are super-friendly. Making this kind of food at home wouldn't be that much cheaper, so I think the prices are fair.
The chairs are high, so probably not great for kids, but it would be fine for a small group.
They take Amex, which I love.
Yum! I live one block away from Jill's and have to stop myself from going every day.
The deli salads (quinoa, kale, hijiki, and wild rice are my favorites) are delicious and unique, full of flavor.
The desserts (especially the pear crumble, blueberry biscotti, and carrot cake) are decadent and delicious, and the serve is always very friendly and pleasant.
I have had the raw falafel platter (dine-in only) a few times and love the hummus that accompanies it, as well as the generous side salad you get with it.
Although a small side for $5.25 may sound expensive, the food is very filling, largely due to the high fiber content.
I work next door and have become addicted to Jill's! It is a bit pricey, but I always feel good about what I'm eating. Plus, it's really delicious!
My favorites are the kale salad, the macro-bowl, and open faced sandwich. The desserts are also awesome! Try the chocolate thumbprint and the mini-pecan pies.
Even if you think you won't/don't like vegan/organic/raw foods, try it. You will be pleasantly surprise at how flavorful, filling, and overall satisfying it is! Yum!
I'm vegetarian.. was really disappointed here.. Uncomfortable seating, slow service, way too expensive for a tiny meal that left me starving. The bathroom was so so cold.
This is a truly incredible place. It's filling, luxurious, sublime. Eating here is as good as it gets, great staff, lovely atmosphere. I just wish that it could expand and be a real "sit down" place--then again, I also love ordering at the counter. I would go here every day if I could...But I am not often enough in Cobble Hill...
The food is so delicious, and completely beyond reproach. I took off a star because the stools are prohibitive for over-weight people (like my mom) who would really benefit from eating that kind of food, and want to stay at Jill's to eat it. ALso, there are a lot of people who eat raw, vegan food for health reasons (they might have cancer, for instance) so again, I find the impetus behind the backless stools a nagging mystery . I also wish the menu had a few more savory options. There are too many [delicious] raw treats at the expense of main courses. But the food is just so fresh and flavorful, and the textures are blended so brilliantly in every dish. I love the chocolate muesli bar and the kale salad! Their lunch special is an insane deal. Green juice, a sandwich or wrap, and a chocolate or vanilla muesli bar for like $10.
Sarah P.'s review below echoes my thoughts exactly. I was horrified by the prices at Jill's; there comes a point when there is no excuse in charging that much. It isn't "Oh well" so much as "I am speechless". I, too, payed $16 or $17 for a lunch sampler of tiny portions that left me hungry. I, too, on the second visit ordered the hummus "sandwich" only to be confronted with one tiny slice of bread with one bite's worth of vegetables dropped onto a dollop of hummus. She said it.... $11. Not to mention that the second time I was there, the service was so bad that I vowed to never return, and I haven't. There are countless other places in the city to get good raw/vegan/vegetarian food; I would never waste my time or money on this place again. The preposterousness of charging so much for so little is outrageous, especially when it is served by a half-checked-out staff that forgets to bring me my soup for 20 minutes. I don't care how quality the ingredients are; other places are doing the same thing, with the same foods, but doing it better, and for much less money. I wouldn't waste my time on Jill's again.
