I am so pleased that we decided to make Jewell animal hospital our new vet for our dog.  I saw all the great reviews on Yelp and we needed one sooner rather than later and boy oh boy did this place live up to the reviews!

My first impression was a good one, walking up and seeing the pet area outside as well as the people area.  It was very calm when we walked inside and not busy at all as it was a Saturday morning.  The girl at the front desk was very polite and helpful although I will say that we had to wait a good 15 minutes before being seen.  Granted we WERE 15 minutes early but there was nobody else there.

When we went back to our room, the vet tech was also very helpful and very calm which was great as our dog is a little anxious.  Then again, whose dog isn't when you go the vet??  We saw Dr. Jewell and he was the best part of our visit.  He came in and sat down on the floor and actually cuddled with our dog.  Love it!  He gave her some treats and really got her to trust him.  Her exam was quick, he was able assist us with our list of reasons we were there and she was wagging her tail when we left.  On top of all that, it really wasn't too expensive AND they gave her a rawhide bone which she is very happily chewing on.

We are new to the area and she has had the same vet for the past few years so this was a big deal to me.  I am so glad I followed my fellow Yelpers because Jewell Animal Hospital rocks!  We will recommend them to any and everyone!

I could not be happier with using Jewell Animal Hospital as our vet.

We have taken our cats here for two initial exams when we first adopted them, and once for an upper respiratory infection.  Each time, scheduling an appointment within 24 hours was easy.

On-site parking is great, and for us, the location is very convenient.

Every member of the staff we interacted with us great to us, and to our cats too.  The complimentary bag of treats at checkout is nice, and so is the no pressure approach to purchasing different things that they offer or suggest (food, additional screenings).

This morning, I got an email from them letting me know that we can access Mook & Ninja's medical records online.. how cool is that?  My doctor's office certainly does not offer that!

I've not often had animals to take to the vet, but it was time for my boys to get their rabies & distemper boosters. I've passed Jewell many times before, and thought that it would be a good, nearby place to take them; luckily, now that we've moved from West Ridge to Ravenswood, the hospital is even closer.

Right off the bat, they get points for having a private parking lot. It would be a nightmare trying to get the kittens in without it. They even have a cute little "people park" outside. What fun.

The inside of the office is nice and clean, but not sterile; they have a mini-fridge stocked with water, Perrier and fruit juice for the humans. There's a little table for the childlike humans to keep themselves busy at, too. The exam rooms are nice and bright - I don't even think the lights were on in the room we were in.

All the staff we interacted with were kind and really helpful. The tech was soothing and helped our cats relax; they weren't real happy with being shoved in the kitty cab and taken to a new place. Dr. Mitchell was also very informative, quick and the cats didn't give any problem with being examined nor getting their shots. We were also told of their dental month in February, where you can get 15% off of some dental services, including cleaning, which both need. I must confessed I was kind of impressed with Dr. Mitchell sharing that when he noticed some  common tartar buildup on the teeth; he easily could have suggested (as I feel many others would) that we make an appointment for sometime soon to get that taken care of, instead letting us know about it almost 5 months in advance and encouraging us to make our appointment them (which we certainly will!).

All in all, the staff and facility here are fantastic. I'm almost kicking myself that we didn't go earlier, even if they didn't really need it. But it's good to know they have a perfect bill of health, and that we have such a great place resource to aid in our care of the furkids!

Five stars for Dr. Jewell and Dr. Mitchel, and all the other doctors, assistants, and front desk employees. From our first visit to get Riot, our stray boxer checked out, we've all felt like family here. Now when we visit Riot is recognized and greeted with a big hi and smile, followed by a treat. If he doesn't like that treat, someone will go and find one that he does. These doctors mean business, and by that I mean they check out my pup, diagnose him, prescribe him and then when he returns in a week he's cured! And the whole process is entirely accomodating, friendly, and sincere.

I chose this place because:
a) I can walk to it (I don't have a car)
b) It was well-reviewed
and c) They're open until 7 on most weeknights - which is helpful since I don't get home until about 6:30.

Now, I'm a first-time dog owner, so I have no basis of comparison, but Dr. Mitchell is awesome. He's a very positive, upbeat guy who will tell you exactly what's going to happen and how much it's all going to cost, and if you need to leave your little dog at the office during the day for observation, he'll give you a call midway through to let you know how she is.

It's not the cheapest vet situation that I am aware of, but the office staff LOVES my dog. Literally. When I adopted her, she had a pretty crappy case of heartworm - which entailed THREE days of being left at the office for observation after treatment. And when I went to pick her up the last time, the ENTIRE OFFICE STAFF came out to hug my dog and say bye to her.

So in the event that something awful were to happen, I'd be okay with leaving Ruby in the hands of the awesome people at Jewell.

I like this place. Dr Mitchell & Dr Jewell clearly care for your animals, and their techs are great! Yes, it's expensive, but everyone is friendly and very helpful. They are wonderful about taking quick questions over the phone and give the most thorough answers available. I will always take my dogs here when the need arises.

And they have parking...definite plus!

I took my kittens Donny and Bunny here for a wellness exam, and was impressed by the Jewell Animal Hospital.  Before you even arrive inside there is a nice parking lot adjacent to the office (key for lugging in said kittens) and some benches outside to sit with your pets while you wait.  They have a colorful waiting room, which was clean but not at all "animal hospital septic" like (have you ever noticed that some vet's offices look like a waiting room at NASA?  Ok, or what I would imagine a waiting room at NASA would be like.  I digress).  The receptionst was very friendly and came out to meet D+B before one of the technicians took us all back for our appointment.

The appointment, although mainly just a meet and great so the staff could get to know D+B when they're healthy, was very throughough and lasted almost an hour.  Both Dr. Mitchell and the vet attendant (vet nurse?) were awesome -- kind, calm and great with both my kittens and my questions.  They even took the time to teach me how to clip their claws so I could do it at home.  I like how this vet is both in my neighborhood and has great customer service.  Hopefully D+B will stay in good health, but I feel confident in taking them to Jewell Animal Hospital if they're ever under the weather.

Jewell Animal Hospital is wonderful!  It's so refreshing to see a place where all of the employees truly love their job.  We've gone to both Dr. Mitchell and Dr. Jewell and they're both so kind, patient, and loving to our Havanese puppy.  They do have weekend hours which is very helpful and they offer a few different days for surgeries which make it easy to make work with work schedules.

They give our puppy lots of love and attention.  This is not just a job for them.  And they always send us home with a bag of treats which our dog is obsessed with.

Not a big yelper by far but after having so many friends/aquaintances ask latley about whom to go to, I cant not want to write about Jewel Animal Hospital.   I too was referred by another aquaintance over 2 and a half years ago, pretty soon after they had opened.   Dr. Jewel was amazing off of the bat since I had adopted a neglected, very underweight and sick Pug.

Not only did Bogie get everything he needed, including surgery at only 8 months (just a hernia); the WHOLE staff guided me along the way.    Yes, they will instruct and show you how to clip nails, what to expect and how to treat any breed of dog or cats.  I cant say Bogie wanted to stay with the staff after his surgery as others have but I was called after surgery to find out he was A-OK and received follow up calls as well.

To date Bogie has all characteristics of a crazy Pug.   Loveable, energetic and hilarious.   He came a long way from being detached, sick and afraid of humans.  Previous pets have always known when they were at "The Vet" and put up a fight to enter a room.  Bogie runs right in to their colorful rooms and curtious staff.

As for cost, I would say that they are just under the radar of being mid-line for the field, (maybe thats why they do have so many dedicated clients - especially right now) so thats a plus; but a lot of customers know you have to go past Western going west and farther north than Montrose to not have to pay an arm & leg, just because you may be in a "prime" neighborhood.  And if you are on a tight budget, there are many options to go on - shots being one year or two or three.   You can always get a print out of cost that stays at that rate for 30 days (I had to save up a bit for his surgery).   Only item to avoid is the plastic guard that goes around their necks after surgery.  A Pug is a smaller dog and it was $20 bucks after surgery - save your money and spend $3 at Petco.

On a lasting note, a prior employee of mine was in vet school and wanted and put in his app to do his externship with Dr. Jewel.    In the field, they are known as one of the best where you learn the most and the hospital is so dedicated that there is always someone (usually an extern) there 24-7 to answer questions, concerns and emergencies.  Thats in comparison to saying Med students want to do their externship at Northwestern.   And it must be hard to get into for I have seen the same faces there going on 3 years now.  Low to no turnover says a lot as well.

All in all Dr. Jewel & Dr. Mitchell run a top notch shop :)

After moving to Lincoln Square in May, my wee (okay she's "voluptuous"), 9yr-old Pug, Gigi, was in desperate need of a mani/pedi but I was loathe to try and find another vet that would have the gonads to take on the talons of terror. Naturally, and as usual, I yelped and zeroed in on the vet that had the most and highest number of ratings and was close enough for me to walk to should the mood strike my salt & pepper hair-covered goddess. needless to say, if you've ever met Gigi, 'twas 75 and sunny and we took the jeep...with the top down, natch.

So, in chronological order, my rundown of our first visit to Jewell...
1. the office is SPOTLESS
2. they encouraged me to let Gigi run around; they have double-doors (like in prison?) so it's nearly impossible for our 4-legged friend to sneak out to the street
3. THEY HAVE TREATS FOR PEOPLE!!! chocolate everywhere...my sweet tooth was temporarily appeased
4. the guy working the front desk was a little "snarky" at first but seemed to have lightened up by the time i went to pay our bill
5. barely sat down before they whisked Gigi away to weigh her (she lost 2.2lbs!!!!)
6. waited a mere 10 minutes MAX before we were ushered into a spotless examination room and "interviewed" by...can't remember her name...but she was nice enough and kind to Gigi, which is all that matters
7. the tech was gentle and sweet and patient and maintained eye-contact while taking her temperature;)
8. THEY HAD CHICK MAGAZINES IN THE EXAM ROOM!!!! i got my Cosmo fix and didn't have to spend $200 at the hair salon
9. Dr. Leonard Jewell is a doggie god dressed in hair-covered blue scrubs. The man introduced himself as "Leonard," shook my hand and proceeded to get down on the floor and coo to my Pug for a good 5 minutes...she was in heaven. Treats aplenty, especially after Leonard knocked an entire jar full to the floor (I don't think they as yet understood the ferocity of Gigi's appetite, so I helped pick them up while corralling her behind my legs)
10. Leonard asked a bunch of questions, laughed at my stupid jokes, cooed adoringly, as is expected when in the company of an alpha Pug, and spent time just being a good doctor
11. After spending an inordinate amount of time explaining and apologizing for the futileness of their attempting to trim her nails without a sedative, Leonard and his tech returned to the room less than 5 minutes later with an impeccably groomed Pug. I was incredulous. Doc explained that a simple tool called a "Pug muzzle" was all that was needed. PUG MUZZLE?!?!?! Without even having to ask, he retrieves aforementioned muzzle so that i can see that it's a harmless piece of soft fabric that is more comfy for Pug and that also blocks her eyes, giving a result similar to that if you used blinders on a horse. If she can't see what's coming, she can't use all 20lbs of terrified strength to wrestle out of your arms
12. Rather than hit me up for more medicine for Gigi's chronic ear infections, he advised me to just use up what i had left and how to use it best to her advantage
13. They also took care of those pesky anal glands...blech
14. The price was great. well...maybe it wasn't great-great but considering my overall experience, the price is better than average and so completely worth it
15. DID I MENTION CHOCOLATE?!?!?
16. This morning i received an email from Jewell Animal Hospital that included my log-in and password information and I was able to make an appointment for her in 4 weeks time to get those pesky nails trimmed again
17. Nearly forgot...FREE PARKING and a well-maintained lil' doggie park with a free supply of poopie bags.

Thank you, Jewell Animal Hospital!!!
xoxoxo

Boy, this place has quite the reputation.  I picked this vet because it is:

a) less than 5 minutes from my place
b) I like to support local businesses, and,
c) it is highly rated

It seems that people have had life-changing experiences here.  Ella the miniature red dachshund, well, had a pleasant, run-of-the-mill, "hey! someone just stuck a thermometer up my butt but it's okay they just gave me a treat" kind of experience.

I did a little research beforehand on Jewell's website and had to laugh when we showed up...their website touts a "living room like waiting area" and colorful exam rooms.  Yes, they achieve this with some paint on the walls and a few houseplants.  But it was still a little comical to walk in...I mean, it is still, after all, a vet's office.  They do have complimentary Perrier in a mini-fridge; so I guess that is a little spa-like.  And I would be lying if I said I didn't help myself to one!

The staff....one receptionist was particularly congenial.  Dr. Jewell himself is very nice...a great, funny guy who puts you and your furry friend at ease, which is much appreciated.  As with any doctor, I would just make sure that you pipe up and get your questions in!  I just felt a little rushed on a Wednesday morning, even though we were maybe one of the only sets of patients in the office at the time.  Make your concerns heard!

(Nice bonus that they have the private parking lot behind the office).

Sometimes it can be quite painful to visit the doggie doc, because let's face it...200 bones for some stuff you don't see a direct result from = sadness.

However, rabies, distemper, bordatella, etc: all necessary vaccines/tests for pup. Buck up!

At Jewell: $200 for 3 year rabies, 2 year distemper, 3 year bordatella + a very through exam by Dr. Mitchell.

Not so bad, considering it's generally the only vet visit we make each year. It also means if we run into a rabid raccoon on the sidewalk (again) that my dog will not have to fret about contracting rabies should she decide to defend my honor.

Appointment making: Easy peasy.
Record transfer:  they got it done, retrieved from other vet. Cinch.
Location:  right by Welles Park, to reward pooch after endurance.
Parking: Check, private lot or easy, non-permit street parking.
Staff:  Very helpful, kind and seemed genuinely interested in her health.

A solid vet in Chicago. They even have a little roaming cat (cute)! They were very accommodating to my dog's VIP complex (doesn't do well with other dogs) and cleared a path for her to diva herself into a private waiting room while I filled out paperwork. I much appreciated this...

Another appreciated item: no pushing of extra "services." Nothing out of the ordinary, and all choices were laid out matter-of-factly. None of this "Well, if you really loved your dog you'd go ahead and get her hair implants and dentures, and ya know...if you really loved her." I hate that. It's annoying, and its insulting...Jewell staff/vet did a great job of just giving the basics and telling me my dog is as healthy as a horse.

I mean she's a dog, but you get it.

Much recommended!

My older (13+) cat had a dental emergency a couple of weeks ago...he hadn't been to a vet in years.  I called Jewell on the recommendation of a couple of friends, and also because it's walking distance from my home.  They were able to get him in the same day, on a Saturday when they had to be pretty busy.

Everyone there was wonderful and welcoming -- the receptionists, the techs, and Dr. Mitchell.  Very caring, and they obviously love and respect animals.  Dr. Mitchell quickly located the problem and extracted the tooth, then had me bring my cat back a week later for more needed dental work.  The staff subsequently called twice to find out how he was doing.

Unfortunately, during the dental work Dr. Mitchell found a growth that turned out to indicate an inoperable tumor.  He was really compassionate when he called to give me the news, and was upfront with me about what I might expect.  He didn't try to talk me into exorbitant, painful and ultimately pointless treatment, but told me just to be good to my cat and keep him eating, give him painkiller if needed, bring him in free of charge for a follow-up, and call anytime if I had questions. He also cited a similar case of his where the cat was still going strong 10 months after the diagnosis.  This was extremely comforting news to me.

Anyway, even though I didn't have the best outcome (nobody's fault!), I loved this place and will certainly take my other cat there.  It was undeniably expensive, but no more than other vets I've patronized, and well worth it, I thought.

P.S.  I really enjoyed their mellow office cat Saxby, too.  You have to love an animal hospital that has an resident cat!

This really is the best vet I have EVER been to.  I love, love, love Dr. Jewell and Dr. Mitchell is great, too.  They are just so great, and have such fantastic bedside manner (which is more than I can say for North Center Animal Hospital---shame on you!).

Last time I was there they had an unexpected emergency come in and so I was going to have to wait about an hour.  I said I was going to pop over to the library and they offered to watch my two dogs for me!!!!  Do you understand this?  Do you have any idea what it is like to be able to get a free hour not worrying if my dogs are getting enough love?  It was heavenly.

Unfortunately I don't feel my experience at Jewell has been adequate over the last six months, and I have since changed vets.  My cat had an ongoing ear infection and after three visits to Dr. Mitchell, it still hadn't been resolved.

At the first visit, we tried Med #1 which wasn't too expensive.  Then at the second visit, we tried Meds #2 and #3, pretty expensive.  Then at the third visit, Dr. Mitchell was grasping at straws and not able to diagnose the real problem, so he sent me home with more of Med #1.

It takes a lot to get my cat in the carrier, trek to the office -- not to mention a lot of money each time.  At the third visit, the doctor said he thought it could be one ailment, or another, or another...he just kept guessing.  In the end, he wanted to wait even longer to see what happened.  In the meantime, my 7-year-old cat, who had been very healthy up to this point, was MISERABLE and it definitely showed at my appointment.  I really don't see why he couldn't do tests while I was there that third time for the inner ear infection he guessed was the culprit.

I just couldn't wait and see anymore -- my cat was obviously sick and needed better care.

Also...I was told about February Dental Care Month last October when I first came here.  The person at the front desk told me dental cleanings for cats would be discounted in February and would cost about $200 each.  I saved up, made appointments for both cats, and the day before the scheduled cleanings, I called to confirm the time.  I also asked, "So there's a discount, right?  How much will it be?"  At that time, I was told $400 each.  SO not what I was told the first time.  I canceled both appointments even though they tried hard to make me understand they give the "best" cleanings and other clinics are inferior.  Really?

I adopted a cat from a rescue and took him in for a wellness exam.  He had some discharge from his left eye and the rescue people had given me some medication for him that didn't seem to be working.

When Dr. Jewel came in to the exam room he immediately put his head down to "kitty level" so that my cat could head butt him and become friends.  I thought this was pretty hilarious and the cat seemed to think it was pretty cool.  That alone would have sold me on Dr. Jewel.

The thing that will keep me coming back is the fact that he told me right away that the problem with the cat's eye was completely misdiagnosed and that the medication I was giving him was not going to clear it up.  He told me that the problem was chronic, but managable and he gave me some different medication that cleared the problem up within a few days.

The office is really clean and the staff is all very friendly and helpful.  I was able to get an appointment without any problem.

They saved our puppy's life. She was 9 weeks old, she had parvo, she had to live there for a week, she had puppy plasma transfusions, and the staff at Jewell saved her life.

While she was sick they were sincere and sympathetic, they called often with updates--even on weekends, and really loved her.

We usually see Dr. Mitchell and Jodi the vet tech, and they're both great (all seem very nice).

Sure, it's pricey, but probably comparable to other urban vets. In fairness, saving a puppy from parvo is not cheap. (Just ask Oprah)

Fantastic.  The vets are great and do not charge if you come in with a  quick question.  They even gave us some free lean treats.  When our puppy got neutered, they went over all of the costs and made sure we felt comfortable with the prices they were charging.

I'm still in love with this vet - I actually was kind of excited about taking my cats in so Dr Jewell could see them!  Greeted with a big hug, I felt welcome as always.

The tech (whose name I don't remember - I have repeatedly seen Jodi and she's lovely, but she wasn't there) was patient and kind with both of my cats whose personalities are polar opposites - one is a spaz and can't stay still, and the other freezes with fear at the vet.  But she was accommodating to their different personalities.

My frequent-flier at the vet (my wiggle-worm) was in for a check-up (and a bit of constipation), and the other (who freezes in fear) I took in for bloody stool.  TMI?  You're reading a review for a vet, sorry.  After cooing over her to help make her feel better, Dr Jewell did a fecal analysis, urinalysis, blood draw and testing, general exam on my girl.  She got the works this time.  After getting the results back, Dr Jewell tried to call, and since my phone was broken, mailed a copy to me.  Turns out both are healthy :)

That makes me think they're drumming up symptoms because they secretly want to go to the vet too.

my reviews might suggest i am flip-flopper with this place... but all in all, jewell certainly hits the 4 to 5 star mark and the positive reviews are well-deserved. since my last not-fantastic experience, i did return to Jewell for some check-ups and such and the care is really top notch. on a busy day, you may have some waiting to do, but that's not really the kind of stuff i care too much about at a vet (unless it's an emergency).

it's still on the pricier side compared to other neighborhood vets (i may be speaking bitterly after just shelling out $300 mere hours ago...) , but you do get what you pay for as far as the care that both dr. mitchell and dr. jewell provide. i am not huge on updating reviews... but they certainly made every attempt possible to address the earlier concerns I had and i certainly feel comfortable bringing my pets to jewell.

Zac G's cat, Professor, came down with a miserable case of the scoots over the weekend.  Being a great lover of animals and having a car he asked me for my help in taking the Professor to the vet.  At first we were going to take her to a vet in the Logan Square area, but after doing our research on Yelp we could not pass up taking a trip to the Jewell Animal Hospital.  Luckily we were able to schedule an appointment for the same day and we were out the door with our kitty carrier in tow.

The animal hospital waiting room was thoughtfully laid out.  The chairs were paired into coves so if you animal isn't interacting with others they can at least have their own space.  There is also a very friendly office cat that likes to play with the puppies that come in and he stopped by to say "hi" to the professor in her cage.  The tech that worked with the cat was so skilled with wooing Professor and using her kitty charms, that the cat didn't even flinch when she had her temperature taken.  Dr. Mitchell came in and also charmed Professor very well.  They were able to remedy her scoots, a process I would rather not divulge on the internet.  All I can say is that involves constructing a kitty burrito by wrapping a towel around the cat's head.

I don't know if the staff bathes in cat nip but they did such a great job with good ol' Prof I will have to schedule an appointment for my little guy to come here for his check ups!

We brought Abbie, our Beagle-Mix,  to Dr. Jewel for an infection that she had in her paw. Dr. Jewel was comforting, understanding and extremely friendly with Abbie's issues and tended to her with lots of love and know-how. The staff was comparably friendly and treated our pet with the utmost professionalism and care that, unfortunately,  just doesn't seem to be commonplace (at least with my limited experiences). Their knowledge and experience was incredible, alleviating any worries we had, replacing them with solid information and a sense of calmness that will make us come back anytime (hopefully not too much!).

Veterinarians are expensive.  Some come closer to earning their exorbitant fees than others.  Jewell is one of the former.  The staff care about your pets and take time to help them.  I called for advice a couple of weeks ago, and two different people in the office talked me through my beagle's issues and gave advice.  Then, two different people called to follow up over the next two days, asking how ol' beagle pup was doing and advising me on next steps.  In-office visits have also been consistently pleasant experiences, except for paying the bill of course.

I really can't begin to say enough about this place - it is single-handedly THE best veterinary experience of my/my cat's life.

Dr. Jewell is amazing with my pet, upfront about price/cost and really very nice - I swear you will want to go have a beer with him after he's done caring for your animal.

I'm in there at least once a month to pick up prescription food for my cat and the staff is always fast, courteous and just amazingly kind and polite.

Just went in for Rabies/Distemper shots today and had another great experience.

No matter where I live in Chicago, Dr. Jewell will always be my Vet.

I recently got a second cat and despite a lengthy "by the book" introduction and random moments of the two getting along, there are still fights.  Well, this morning there was a big fight.  And the calico didn't look too hot.  She had scratched her eye pretty badly and blood was pooling in her duct.  After slightly freaking out, I called the first place I could think of in my neighborhood.

The receptionist said that they were booked all day but said she would "double book" me (or some mumbojumbo like that-- either way, she got me in the books right away).  They have a parking lot, which is helpful when you're lugging a 12 pound cat in a box.  I had to wait about 20 minutes or so which, honestly, really isn't bad considering I didn't officially have an appointment.

The tech was awesome-- she was extremely gentle and sweet with my poor cat.  My cat purred the entire time despite having a gouge in her eye or a thermometer up her butt.  Dr. Jewell was amazing.  He's straight-forward, no-nonsense, and has this calming aura about him.  He did a cool Fluorescein Stain on her eye to see where exactly the scratch was and gave me some ointment for her.  (Lucky cat-- she just had her third eyelid scratched, not the eye itself!)  Both Dr. Jewell and the tech gave her some treats, immediately becoming her best friends.

All said and done, I was in and out of the vet in about an hour!  And get this-- didn't even cost $100.  It was $90.12 for the visit, the stain, the ointment and they even threw in a bag of cat treats.

I highly recommend this place for a friendly, down-to-earth neighborhood animal hospital.

I found a mangy, stray cat on my back porch during a rain storm. I took him in but could not find its owner. My cat friends all recommended Jewell Animal hospital to take the cat to for a check up. Dr. Mithcell along with a vet tech, named Andrienne conducted the check up. The cat was treated for an ear infection, fleas, and got some shots. Tests were also run. We had to come back to have some teeth pulled because they were rotten and nerves were exposed.  Dr. Mitchell thoroughly explained the procedure and the cost. The cat is now healthy and  running and jumping around keeping me up all night. I feel the staff here, from the doctors to the technicians to the front desk staff,  truely love all animals. You can even hear this love in the way they greet and interact with the animal patients as they come in. And they just doted over my cat so much so that my cat struggled and fought  when the vet tech and I tried to put him in the carrier to go home (or maybe that cat just doesn't like me so much) . Anyway, I feel confident in the staff and their ability to look after the health of my animal. I highly recommend them. And there is a plus for you dogs out there. The hospital is across the street from Wells park so after a visit you can go for a nice romp in the park.

I went to Jewell Animal Hospital based purely on the reviews from Yelp.  Well, that and my need to find a new vet for my two kitties.

These guys were everything the reviews promised them to be!  We didn't see Dr. Jewell, but Dr. Mitchell and we liked him quite well - he was very personable and seemed genuinely interested in my pets as family members, as opposed to some animal to be checked out.  Bonus - no one cried out in humor or shock when they saw my hugely obese kitty emerge, nor did they judge me, but rather we discussed what made him so fat (health problems!) and how to make him less fat.  Many people whip out their camera phones for a shot of him and fat-kitty is grateful to have been saved the embarrassment this time.

The office is still new and quite clean and comfortable.  Our exam room had a skylight which was, I thought, a really nice touch.  They also have parking!

The price is no worse than other places in the city and a bit better considering the level of care!  I had two kitties (they give you a discount on the office visit for multiple animals at a time) get their rabies and that FVCP or whatever shot and some cans of food for under $250!

Sigh...discovering black specks on my Oxford, googling it, finding it to be "flea dirt", learning that flea dirt = flea poo...I called Dr. Jewell, itchy from the thought of fleas. I called on a Monday evening, they squeezed me in Tuesday after work.

I showed up, a vet confirmed my suspicions (and that there IS truth on the internets)...yep, flea dirt (I know it's poo, just say it), and hooked me up with some treatment.

I was once again pleased with the friendliness of all the staff and the fact that rather than insisting that I pay for a full vet check-up, I just paid for a tech visit. Yay! Another win for Jewell Animal Hospital!

I own a wonderful, rescued, lovable, deaf pit bull She wants to play with you. She can look in two directions as once -- really. She sees you when you're sleeping, she knows when you're awake -- heh!

On to the reviewage!

Pros:
Jody, the vet tech., was great with my dog. She spent the right amount of time giving her attention and getting her acclimated to the office, new people, etc.

Dr. Jewel was great, got right down on the floor with my pup and let her kiss the heck out of him. He knows how to deal with dogs and doesn't treat them like humans.

Did not change me for the antibiotics - not sure it this was an oversight or not -- but SCORE for me!

Jody offered to let me leave my puppy there whilst I went to get more cash across the street.

Cons:
One office staff member behaved in that "too-cool-for-school" aging, gen-x-er way that I abhor (hence, the loss of the whole 5 star rating thing from yours truly)

The prices are too high overall -- comparatively speaking (shots, check-up, fecal test 300 smackeroos!)

Staff is not racially diverse -- (more star disadvantage in my book)

Overall, a decent experience. I'll take my little picaso head back.

Dr. Jewell and his staff are amazing.

First we brought our adult cat in because she had been leaking fluid, we thought from her ear. Our prior vet (City Cat Doctor) told us that her ears looked fine, and that it was probably coming from her mouth due to a rotten tooth (which she has had since we got her almost 7 years ago and has never caused issues). They recommended x-rays for her tooth and that was it. Dr. Jewell took one look at kitty's ears and diagnosed an ear infection, gave us meds and a week later the leaking had stopped (and did we mention this trip cost half as much as the last vet?).

We also had our kitten spayed at Dr. Jewell's office. Following surgery she appeared lethargic and we had to rush her after hours to an emergency vet in the suburbs (referred by Dr. Jewell). We learned she had a congenital heart problem, likely triggered by the surgery. Dr. Jewell was wonderful in helping us deal with this - he took her in the next day for follow up ultrasounds and gave her oxygen, all at no charge, and called to follow up several times just to see how she was doing.

We are SO glad we found this vet.

We've had our adopted cat for a year and decided it was time to take her to the vet.

I opted for Jewell because of the rave reviews and because of the parking lot. Everything went smoothly and I especially  like how you can print  the forms from their website and fill them out before the appointment.

The vet assistant (blonde woman) was truly the kitty whisperer. My cat is not good around new people but you never would have known. I mean, heck, my cat was very calm even with a thermometer up her butt.

While waiting for Dr. Jewell to administer the shots, I heard him on the phone with someone who had recently lost a pet. It was very touching to hear how he consoled the person by saying not to be embarrassed about grieving and recounted his personal experience with losing a pet. The people at Jewell really care about animals.

The icing on the cake? Dr. Jewell even kissed my cat on the head AND after giving her shots, picked her up and cradled her like a baby (complete with baby talk).

After a bad experience with Dr. Gordon in Hyde Park, I chose this hospital after reading several reviews here on Yelp.   I brought in my 6 month old cat to get some sutures removed and check out the healing status of her spay incision.

The lobby is lovely, well-decorated with lively prints and murals.  It has a very clean smell, free of both animal odors AND free of that heavy medicinal smell you can sometimes detect in veterinary hospitals.  The receptionists were talkative and friendly, which relaxed me quite a bit since I was a bit gun-shy after my last vet ordeal at another place.

I saw Dr. Mitchel (sp?), who was very friendly and informative.  I appreciated his patience with me, as I can be a bit of a tough customer when it comes to the health of my cat (I've been known to ask a zillion questions and make certain I understand everything, which can irk a lot of busy vets).

My cat can be quite uppity when it comes to the vet, but both the Doctor and the tech (or assistant) were SO sweet to her, and she was perfectly behaved aside from some grumbling when the Doc was snipping the sutures out (a far cry from "I think I'll go ahead and eat your face now").  And while we were in the exam room, I heard one of the staff members in the lab singing.  SINGING.  Not only did that tickle me, but it gave me the impression that the staff there are upbeat, friendly and have great patience with their critter clients.

The office visit and suture removal was 55 bucks and some change, but I would have happily paid twice that amount.

I am signing my cats up with this Doctor.  I think you'll agree that once you find that perfect vet, you just don't go anywhere else.

Boris, my pug puppy, is the first pet I've had since living in my family home, and therefore is the first pet for whom I am solely responsible for the veterinary care of. I found Dr. Jewell's Animal Hospital on Yelp, and liked the good reviews and proximity to my house.

Boris was nervous on his first vet visit, but everyone from the front desk receptionist to the techs who weighed and checked him out to the doctor who gave him his vaccines were kind, caring, and soothing to his nerves. Even the cat in the lobby was gentle and friendly! When I had questions, they were answered completely and thoughtfully. I was surprised at how reasonable the price of the bill was. Whenever I call to schedule another appointment, the receptionist asks me how Boris is doing and if I've noticed anything of concern or have questions about his health. I just scheduled our second appointment for the day after Thanksgiving... THEY'RE OPEN! I feel good about choosing Dr. Jewell's for our veterinary care.

My dogs and I love Dr. Jewell!  I'm not exaggerating either...one of our dogs had surgery and needed to spend the day here.  When we came to pick her up, she did not want to leave!

Dr. Jewell is very friendly and you can tell that he really loves animals.  Our dog Audrey had an emergency the night before our appointment to see Dr. Jewell for our other dog.  We took Audrey to an emergency vet that night, but wanted to get Dr. Jewell's advice regarding Audrey when we brought our other dog in.  He went above and beyond checking on Audrey for us and talking to the emergency vet.  He made several phone calls while we waited in his office and coordinated transferring Audrey to a neurologist.  We were so grateful since we thought we may have to put Audrey down and were completely grief-stricken (she's doing fine now.)

Dr. Jewell is an incredibly caring person and I would highly recommend him!

I was out of town for Christmas when my cat got really sick and my boyfriend got her into Jewell only a few hours later.  I was driving home when they told me they were going to have to put her to sleep, but the staff was so great they kept her awake and OK until I got there 3 hours later.  They let me stay as long as I needed to be with her and I felt like my cat really mattered to them, not that I was just some other client.  When I finally said goodbye to Princess Meow Dr. Jewell gave me one of the best hugs of my life and that is why I take my new cat to him now.

Best. Vet. Ever.

I took Sophie here for her annual checkup, since it's in the neighborhood. Everyone I spoke to here, on the phone and in person, was personable and professional. There was some confusion about my total -- I was quoted only the price of the visit, not including the shots she would be needing -- but I suppose that was only a misunderstanding.

My cat got a little, uh, nervous in the car, so the staff helped me clean her up and brush her long fur when we got there. The rooms each have skylights, so you don't feel too claustrophobic. They offered me something to drink while I was there, too, and sent us on our way with some kitty treats.

Sophie developed a sneeze a couple days afterwards, so I called them back to ask what's up. They said it was possibly a reaction to the shots she had, but I have to wonder if it was something she picked up while at the office.

Thank you, Yelp!  I was frantic to find a vet for my new puppy yesterday afternoon, convinced that his regression in house training was due to a medical issue and not any fault of my own (or my genius puppy's), so I keyed in Chicago vet into the search bar and up came Dr.  Jewell.  I called and was able to get an appointment for today.  After a very irritating drive with puppy humping my arm all the fricking way down Lake Shore, we made it right on time and parked in the back lot.  A BACK LOT!  Yay.

After a few minute wait, a tech came and got me and the puppy promptly peed on her.  He has only done this once and he made a life long friend so I think he thinks its like a hug.  Hmmm.... gotta work on that.  Anyway, the tech spent a lot of time with me and my laundry list of crazy concerns-- pee, poop, pee in house, pee in hallway, pee in garage, shrieking while peeing, pooping while walking, peeing, pooping, peeing some more and pooping all over, etc etc.  Lots of pee and poop.  I realize now that I probably sounded hysterical and the fact that she took all of my concerns seriously and researched them in earnest was really nice.  She got down on the floor with my baby and played with him and when the time came to stick a greased up thermometer in his ass, he was so happy he barely noticed!

Then Dr. Jewell came in and Sueno peed again.  All over his shirt.  Oops.  I wasn't even embarrassed and the doctor moved right along to playing with him on the floor.  I think he was more excited to play with my puppy than I was the day I got him!  He was so good with Sueno that I now feel a wee bit inadequate as a mother.

Shots were next, along with the conclusion that I have a sassy dog indeed, one who will need lots of guidance and training.  It's in the genes.  Dr. Jewell even suggested a trainer who I have already made an appointment with.

Anyways, it was the funnest doctor visit ever and we will be back next month for the last round of shots.  I have also managed to tell myself that it is still not my fault that little puppy has bathroom issues.  It is the elevator's fault.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I have been looking for a vet I liked as well as I liked Barbara Stein from the Chicago Cat Clinic, and I've found him.  Dr. Jewell couldn't be more aptly named.  He is a delightful, caring vet, who took the time to talk to my cat as well as to me.  He was gentle and thorough, and all the staffers who worked with my cat were the same.  It's hard to find a vet with a good bedside manner these days.

There was no leg-pulling about what Caddy needed either.  I've been to places where they've tried to talk me in to ten or twelve different vaccinations or procedures.  I got none of that at Jewell.  In fact the scrip the doctor wrote for Caddy was very reasonably priced as was the visit, IMO.  Medical stuff costs, that's just a fact of life.  I've paid more for a cursory checkup and a couple of shots than I did here, and never got the same kindness and attention.

Bottom line is I like to see the same vet whenever I go to an animal hospital, I want one who doesn't scare my cat silly, and who doesn't make up things to do to him just to pad the bill.  I want a staff that's friendly and helpful (One of them gave me a bottle of cold water while I waited!)  I pretty much figure I've found that, and I'm going to hang on with both hands.

ETA on 7/16/07:  Caddy and I have just had our third visit with Dr. Jewell, and every time I come here I like it better.  Caddy had a rough time  with a massive ear infection, but he got a bag of treats afterwards, and not for being a good  cat either!  This place and the doctor, are both way up at the top in my cool book.

We took our cat to Dr. Jewell after reading all of the amazing reviews.  Our first impression was that the staff was very helpful and Dr. Jewell was so passionate about his practice.

Sadly, the test results from that visit revealed that our little boy had severe issues with his kidneys.  Dr. Jewell called us the very next day (his day off) when he got the test results back.  We had him spend a few days in their care to try to get his "numbers" back down.  The staff were so great, and we were allowed to visit him during this time.  There wasn't a moment when we felt like Dr. Jewell had given up or moved on.

Ultimately, kitty didn't last much longer, but even at the appointment to put him down the utmost care and sympathy was given.   I can't say enough good things about this veterinarian office and plan on bringing any future pets to Dr. Jewell.

This place is wonderful - everyone on staff is friendly and they all clearly love the animals they work with.  Dr. Jewell is great - every time I've been there he's taken the time to get to know both me and my cats, even getting down on the ground to play with them and getting on their good side with treats.  I usually get a little something (new toy, treats) to take home for my pets, too.

The pricing is very reasonable - I spent about $100 per cat for their annual shots.  If you bring two pets in at once, you get a discount on the "office visit" fee for the second one, which is very nice.

As an added bonus, their office is near my apartment.  Even if it wasn't, they would be worth making a drive across town for.
