The best place to watch football while procrastinating on getting to the airport.
Delicious mixed nuts.
Marvin (90% sure that was his name...) the bartender was a delight. Relaxed yet professional, knowledgeable and friendly.
Reasonable (for an upscale hotel's bar) prices.
While the bathrooms are a short walk and off the lobby, they are worth the trip. Quality hand-towels.
I give this bar my blessing.
My girlfriend and I went to this place a few months ago. Since it was valentines day, and I managed to get reservations at 6 pm less than a week ahead of time, it should have been an indication on the quality of the dining experience. I received a call that thursday from a stuffy woman that asked if I had any special requests for the maître d' and to remind me that the establishment is "upscale casual". Having never heard of such a required level of dress I was worried I would not have the requisite vestments. This also brought into question what the vibe of the place would actually be like.
When we got to the restaurant we were seated immediately. If I was optimistic I would say the dining room was half-full, and the place probably only seats 60 people. The server was a jolly man with an eastern european accent and a good level of charm. Overall, the atmosphere tasted like a milkshake made from two scoops stuck-up WASP, one scoop trying-to-hard-to-be-cool scenester and a flavor shot of euro-envy. It wasn't really dreadful, just different...
It was bad form that they did not serve wine by the bottle, which was just the first link in the culinary disappointment chain. The appetizer we ordered, butternut squash risotto, was delivered post-haste and was quite good. I was saddened that the addition of squash was just in cube form lumped in with the risotto, but it was still a quality starter. For dinner I had beef short ribs with sweet potato gnocchi and my gf had Acadian red fish. Both plates were tepid and the food was not very warm, but the portion size was ethical. The temperature quandary was shocking since the place was still relatively empty. I wouldn't be so bold as to admit the food was bad, I just did not feel like we were reciprocated with a proper return on investment.
The saving grace of the evening was dessert. We ordered the Dueling Crème Brulée, which rose into the awesome category based on nomenclature alone. This dish comes with two different crème brulées, one cinnamon the other maple, and some orange madeleine cookies. It was extremely good and perfect to share.
All in all, I doubt I will ever make a return journey. (bad joke for a bad restaurant, it is all the justification I need)
I give it four stars because I actually love hanging out at the bar there, especially before/after a movie. The bar food is upscale and the regular course meals don't disappoint but they are nothing special. Essentially ou can go and you'll be satisfied. The service is impeccable...probably because its connected to the Ritz-Carlton which also carries with it higher pricing.
There are no drink specials or a cocktail menu but they make good classic drinks.
I first discovered Jar-ne a few years ago while looking for a place to grab a drink and chat after a matinee at the Opera House. At first I was cautious entering the bar/lounge connected to The Ritz, worried it would be too swanky and uptight for me and my friends. As it turns out, it is a pretty laid back, relaxed place with a nice bar area and a nice seating area.
Given that you are at The Ritz, the prices are higher than other bars around, but I will say that the drinks are pretty powerful and made really well. They have a nice drink menu with familiar drinks as well as Ritz specialties. I have never had a bad drink there (and I have tried many!).
I have eaten mostly off of the pre-dinner and appetizer menu and felt the food was good with a really nice presentation. The wait staff are very nice and meet your every need. There are some sections of the seating that allow you to people watch from the big windows they have. This is nice.
If you are interested in going to Jar-ne for dinner, I strongly recommend reservations. I tried to get a table without them and was told it would be a several hour wait. Luckily the bar area was not as congested, so I sat there instead.
I really like the look and feel of Jar-ne. It is a comfortable place to go while out and about in Boston for a strong drink and good food.
First of all, the prices here are reasonable - considering what you get.
I can't stand when people give a place lower ratings based on price.
My husband and I went here for dinner and we were both extremely impressed by the food.
The bread and butter were really delicious. There were four types of bread served and they all had very distinctly different flavors. When we asked our waiter for more bread, he asked us if we preferred any one of them in particular. We told him we both loved the one with the berries and he came back with a whole serving of the berries bread as well as the other flavors in a second server. We both noted that it was great attention to detail.
We ordered the twice cooked steak fries and they were crunchy on the outside and perfectly soft on the inside. So good...
We also ordered the seared duck with mushrooms, cooked medium. The duck was served in bite size morsels and the tastes were very balanced.
For the entree, I ordered the braised short ribs with gnocchi. The beef was very tender, of course, and the flavors were just right. The sauce was a nice balance of saltiness and complexity. My husband got the organic salmon and he loved it.
The decor was contemporary and relaxing. It was not too dark to me. There were several families with young children dining while I was there. There are children-friendly choices on the menu (like burgers and hot dogs or hearty soup). The service was excellent with a casual feel.
So for all this, the bill came to $100. That's really reasonable, right? We think so!!!
Eugene Herban is the best server in Boston.
Strolling in off the street, dressed to watch a movie (t-shirt and jeans), Eugene greeted us warmly and, for the duration of our brief drink, was everything a person could ask for in a server.
I must admit that I loved being referred to always as "Young Ms." and "Young Lady." His presentation of the Tropical Jer-ne had me tasting it before it hit the table. He may very well be a psychic. When I stood up to find the restroom, he was not in my field of vision, however, before I had crossed into the lobby, he was beside me saying "Young Ms., may I show you to where?" Which I was thankful for since the restroom is not within Jer-ne. As well, he is clearly an expert at name pronunciation. Reading the name on the credit card, he bid us farewell with a perfect pronunciation of a name that begins with nearly 5 vowels and contains more than 1 "z."
The Tropical Jer-ne is a delicious beverage, but you can find delicious beverages all over Boston. Eugene is the charming sort of server who makes you willing to sit down and pay $15 for one. If you're looking for service that is not only technically masterful, but also uniquely pleasant, try to get seated in Eugene's section.
Stopped in here randomly for dinner before seeing Iron Man last night. We were seated immediately (at 8:15 on a Thursday night, the dining room was relatively empty, though the bar area looked active), and our waitress was with us in less than two minutes to take our drink order. I wasn't in the mood for a martini, the boyfriend had a beer. Drinks looked good, but expensive.
This is not a cheap place to eat. Appetizers run in the $15-$25 range, entrees are $27-$40. Since we were in a hurry we skipped appetizers; I ordered the lobster ragout, the boyfriend had the beef short ribs. Both came quickly and were delicious. Portions were larger than I expected, not the "elf food" you see in some upscale restaurants.
The decor is almost interesting, but stops just short of making a real statement and feels a bit hotel-y. The crowd was well-heeled corporate types and a few trust fund kids. The service was perfect.
If you're looking for a place to take a client, or if you want to make the "dinner" half of dinner-and-a-movie a bit more impressive, this is a good bet.
Thought process: "The name must convey... a journey.... yes... on luxurious canoe...yes! $100 martinis! pillows with the feathers of purebred doves! Cartier watches dipped in chocolate! $18 glasses of wine oh glorious luxury! oh wealth!
Journey yes... but we can't spell it that way! Nay, that would be ABSURD! Let's phonetically spell it like a hayseed from Texas would pronounce it! By jove... Everyone in Boston will call it "Jar-naay? I don't know how to say it, that place in the Ritz."
Oh, yes, brilliance! Genius, I am a marketing GOD!!!!"
So that's idiotic, but the bartender was wicked nice.
Strange and unsatisfying is the best I can conjure up for Jer-ne. Sunday night right before going to see Spamalot we ventured out to Jer-ne for a quick app and drinks. We were greeted by an extremely nice host and were seated promptly but then the strangeness began.
Three different people came over to welcome us to the restaurant and asked if we wanted drinks. We were shown a short menu and could not believe the prices even considering the location. We ordered and while waiting we noticed that people around us were getting food that we did not see on the menu we received. When asked we were informed that there were two different types of menus. Why two menu's I ask.?????
The shrimp cocktail came and was delicious and my chicken Cesar salad was also very tasty. Our server was very nice just junior and distracted. My drink of choice was something of their drink menu "old fashion" and it was poorly made as it tasted like a punch from my days of going frat parties. The lighting was way too dark and over all I was just disappointed. Of course I will try it again but they have to step it up a notch!
I stop here on my way home from the office quite often. If I were rating this on drinks and the service alone; Jer ne would have 4 starts. As a result of the lacking and usually disappointing food I have to give it a 2. I was most recently disappointed by the crab cakes. Stick to drinks only.
I'll start this off by saying I'm a sucker for hotel bars. I just love them.
I've been to Jer-ne many, many times. Though to be honest, I'm not sure why.
The drinks are out of control expensive. I mean, I know it's the Ritz and all, but there's no need for a glass of wine to be pricier ($16) than a martini. And if I'm paying $16 a glass, it better be good! Too bad I've never had a good glass of wine here. But that's ok, because now I always get a martini and therefore don't have a decision to make (I've been known to hem and haw over which drink to order for much longer than necessary, so ridiculous).
I like hotel bars, so I like the atmosphere of them and this one is really no different.
The other plus is the free snacks they give you. Crunchy spicy goodness in your personal little bowl every time you go. I wonder if this stuff is what's driving the price of the wine up?!!
It's a good place to sit and unwind and spend a good amount of time sipping your drink, or definitely a great option for your last drink of the night.
Went on a Saturday night and there was just about no one there. Very dressy and sophisticated. Luckily I was out with my man and we were dressed to the 9s anyway. The drinks are super expensive, so if you're out to just leisurely have some drinks, this is not the place. But if you are having one of those nights where you think to yourself, "Damn, I"m fine and I want a drink to match" then this is a nice place.
Service was great. Had an attentive, friendly bartender who made amazing drinks. I recommend the vanilla brulee martini. Taste just like the dessert.
I was slightly disappointed with this place. For a hotel bar for the Ritz, it was not that great. The people there were kind of rude, but our server was very nice. I just didn't feel like the restaurant had the right feel or was the right caliber for the hotel. Their drinks were either too strong, or completely watered down.
bar is nice but kind of confusing in terms of the feel. it felt like a sports bar with the plasma and the game on and other nice, earthy furniture in the back.
drinks were ridunkulously expensive and service was crap. mario was at the bar and i oveheard him talk to another person and i couldnt help but pay attention to him rather than my date because i've never heard a man swear so much. f-bombs were everywhere!!
ritzy, you can do better than that.
The prices here are absolutely ridiculous for what you get. The food is good but I don't think I'd have a meal here again, perhaps just appetizers with my cocktails. Most bars in Boston have pricey drinks but here they are at least $5 more. It's a good place to get away, it's quite and beautiful so if you want to avoid the pompous ladders district crowd this isn't a bad place to choose. This is a great place for a romantic drink before or after a show, but if you want to spend this much on dinner head on over to Teatro.
The food wasn't spectacular but the attentiveness of the staff earned the stars. I had lunch here with my daughter yesterday and the wait staff was very helpful in providing items for my daughter to amuse herself with as well as just doing everything in a timely manner. They even staked out a bigger table just for my daughter and myself so that I can have her sit next to me. I really appreciated the accommodations especially during a busy lunch hour.
Had dinner here once in the dining room for New Years. Very interesting pre fixed menu, and at $200 total per couple it was a great deal for the Ritz. Love the bar on the first floor, totally cool decor and non stuffy atmopshere. Waitstaff knows the meaning of customer service. Good bar menu.
I'm a sucker for anything associated with the Ritz and I head in here fairly frequently if I'm in the neighborhood, but it's always for just a drink. Why? It's so expensive, and it lacks a real "put on the Ritz" type of feel. It's nice, the cocktails are top notch, but you're definately paying for it. It can also get a little loud and crowded- so not exactly what you would expect or really want when paying top dollar for a cocktail. I like it, but you definately dont' get what you're paying for.
for the price, one would really think they could afford better servers. sort of pricey and pretentious but with the large open windows and fun lighting fixtures, its definitely an attactive place to hang out.
