Stopped in during a road trip to visit the site of the famous St. Alban's raid, the only Civil War battle launched from Canada... FYI it was a LOT easier to find Jeff's then to find anybody who knew about the raid.
Jeff's Maine Seafood was a wonderful place for a Vermont Saturday lunch. Great ambience and decor in a heritage buidling -- sort of funky brothel/speakeasy style. Jeff's is on the corner overlooking the town square.
Service was friendly and attentive. Menu was beguiling -- as the name suggests, it's seafood heavy... and the food was excellent.
Also, a splendid wine list -- no doubt enhanced by having a pretty good wine shop attached to the restaurant. I was delighted to find Peachy Canyon Zinfandel by the glass -- a great California offering NOT available in Canada.
Started with a seafood bisque -- more creamy than a lobster bisque but smoother than a chowder -- with yummy little Vermont oyster crackers.
For mains we had specials of the day. Mine: grilled scallops and shrimp with balsamic reduction with quinoa salad and grilled ramps (wild scallions). The grilling was a high temp sear -- lots of bold flavors while the seafood stayed moist and tender.
Husband had the fish taco wrap -- upside -- grilled fish, matched with mango salsa was nice. Downside -- could have used more kick in the side salsa (not a red sauce) and coleslaw side was so-so. Horseradish or citrus would have made the slaw sing.
Too full to try the salted caramel cheesecake for dessert, alas. -

Jeff's makes me a little nostalgic. When I walk in, I'm hit with the aroma of various seafoods...and it reminds me a bit of the shops my family would frequent while growing up in Maine.
So...take the hint from the name of the restaurant and stay far away unless you actually care for the smell of fresh seafood.
I've been here for lunch a number of times and have yet to be disappointed with their offerings. Crab salad is always good and their french fries are the perfect blend of salt, oil and crunch.
I went for dinner recently when family was visiting and had scallops and (again) the damned french fries. I was a little sad at the portion size for the scallops, but considering that they aren't likely to get daily shipments from Ipswich Shellfish I can't expect a monumental amount of scallops for $22.....That being said, there was no funk to be detected in my broiled mollusk, and for that i was very happy.
Parent had some sort of scampi thing...with cheese on top...which i thought was a little funky....but she didn't complain either.
If youre in Vermont and a good 4 hours from anything salt water, Jeff's is a safe bet. Check out the interior and feel like your a colonial brit in india back in the day....also, the market is pretty swank. Thumbs up! -

I am sure the cook has burnt off all his taste buds. We had two of the specials offered. My husband had the Fra Diablo...we asked for the hot pepper flakes to be kept out since the tomato sauce was listed as spicy. It was still too hot, the scallops in the dish were like little rubber balls, cooked to death.
I had a curried sea food dish, the menu did not mention it but the soup like concoction was so hot it could remove paint from the walls. They had put triangles of burnt pita right in the liquid.
The waitperson was indignant when we asked for a bowl to put the mussel shells in.
Most restaurants serve some form of bread in a basket, this place gave us each a plate with a small piece of bread, nuked to heat, why else was it so rubbery.
The salad good. The dessert very good.
Will not be going there in the near future, not for the $71.90 cents spent on 2 entrees, 2 glasses of wine and 1 dessert. -

For a town such as St. Albans, this place is probably one of the better restaurants in town.
I love small towns and the small shops and restaurants as you find you get very personal service -- this place in no exception. It is very cozy, in a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and the place is a feast for the eyes . . . from the fabric covered lighting hanging from the pressed tin / copper ceiling (quite possibly original to the old building), antique wooden desk and bar, and the handful of tables which have comfortable love seats at the table which make it condusive for relaxed casual conversation.
The food was very good . . . with locally sourced ingredients when they are able get them and incorporate them into their dishes . . . including local cheeses, produce and local fish as well.
It is not ALL seafood here either, as they offer up steak dishes and other dishes which are wonderful. I personally had the file, but others in my party had the salmon and it was reported to be wonderful as well.
Their soups, made with locally sourced fish, tomatoes and cauliflower were quite pleasant and we were advised of seasonal soups (i.e. pumpkin, etc.), which will join the menu come the fall. The fried calamari appetizer was nice and fresh and the red pepper remoulade it was servied with was tasty.
At the end, the maple creme brulee was tasty with a nice hint of maple and the cappuchino washed it all down nicely -- and it capped off a wonderful and relaxing meal.
If you are in the area -- perhaps on the way to / from Canada -- or elsewhere, dont pass this place up. -

Jeff's is the best restaurant in St Albans. I always have a great experience while dining with friends and family. The waitstaff are attentive and courteous ensuring that you have all that you need. While in the kitchen, the chef's ensure the meals are delicious and are presented beautifully.
Additionally, the menu has a variety of options, therefore anyone in your party will find something to savor the tastes.
The ambiance sets the tone for a comfortable and enjoyable experience.
The next time you are in St. Albans and are looking for a great place to sit and have a delicious dinner, stop by Jeff's Maine Seafood.
Kudos! -

Only been once. Mid week, it was quiet and romantic. Perfect as it was our anniversary. I got the king crab. They were on special for $20! I though that with the side dishes was a great deal. My date got the maple scallops. I had a bite. They were just ok, he certainly had plate envy! I would love to go back and check this place out again!

Worst restaurant experience ever. The dinner was inedible, grossly overpriced, and the service was terrible. Even worse, the table next us had a small child screaming at the top of his lungs and running out of control for the hour we were there. Yes, bad parents, but at some point the restaurant needs to intervene. NEVER AGAIN!!

I have mixed feelings about Jeff's. When I first went, I had a great experience. Karen, not so much. As we kept going back, however, the quality seemed to decline. Fish stews with less and less fish. Watery pasta dishes. Overall, the menu is pretty traditional, so it really should stand up and deliver. It really doesn't.

Dinner here has been a pleasant experience in the past but the last two visits have left me looking for a new dinner spot when I'm in town.
Last Saturday night I had dinner there and it took 20 minutes to get a drink and it was almost an hour before we even saw our salad. Meanwhile, not a piece of bread or anything was offered. Come on jeff's, it's 20 minutes MAX between courses. Finally, dinner arrived on the table after an hour and a half of anticipation - it was ok - nothing great and I thought overpriced for what it was. The soft shelled crabs were soggy rather than crispy - overall, not a great dining experience.
And would it kill your waitress to smile?? Perhaps working there is as painful as dining there. In any case, we won't be back anytime soon. -

Wow, pleasantly surprised! This place is on par with the finest seafood restaurants in Boston. The seafood we had was fresh, hot, perfectly cooked, and delicious. The salads were fresh and cold, the bread was warm.
The restaurant has a great deal of character, unlike what you'd get with a Legal Seafood or other chain. The waitress was awesome and the services was perfect. Let's see, high quality, great ambiance, nice people, great seafood... We will be back. -

Ate there Saturday night with friends who had previously had a terrific experience. Ours collectively was anything but. Was offered choice of rice, garlic mashed or french fries. Then told only one serving of rice was left. Then none. Then no garlic mashed potatoes. Everyone ended up with zucchini despite it not being a good accompaniment for some of the entrees. Steak and shrimp entree was embarrassingly meager. Stuffed shrimp were mushy and tasteless. Whoever was in the kitchen clearly had no pride in their output. Went from a "must go" to a "never again"

Special place - worth a stop while traveling through or while visiting Burlington. Yummy food and a great wine/cheese shop next door. We love Jeff's!
