My family and I spent a day here while our car was repaired next door.  Pretty darn good diner chow, with an interesting mix of locals and all manner of laser by eating there.  The folks the were very friendly and did not mind at all us taking up a booth for 9 hours.

We wound up eating breakfast and lunch there.  Among us we had a veggie and a bacon/mushroom omelet, pancakes, patty melt, BBQ beef sandwich, wild salmon burger, spaghetti, grilled ham and cheese sandwich, and hamburger.  All of it was at least decent, and some was fantastic.  The wild salmon burger in particular was really very good.

Good hash browns.  Nice whole wheat toasted buns. Good homemade salsa. Excellent onion rings and fries.  Good spaghetti sauce.  But, canned mushrooms in omelet, no tomato on the grilled ham and cheese sandwich, our only complaints.

As my wife said, really good diner food.

A nice stop on Highway 395.
Simple American food with basic service.
The only down side is the restroom is outside, behind the store, and you need to ask for a key.

I would like to start of by saying I am not by any means a fancy type of a gal. With that being said this place is disgusting. If you can get past the horrid stench (think pigs feet pickling juice) and the disturbing sight of uncleanliness , then maybe you might be able to enjoy a meal here.

We stopped here for breakfast, I wasn't hungry to begin with, once my other senses analyzed the situation any appetite I had flew out the window. My family ordered and said the food was not bad, God bless them for being good sports.

    1/2 star for good service
    1/2 for my fams liking

I think it's really called Jeff's or Jefferey's Country Kitchen, but that doesn't matter much.

It's conveniently located, and there's not much going on in Big Pine, so I'm glad it exists.  But I was expecting better.  OK, I wasn't really expecting better, but I wanted it to be better.  Some of these small-town diners are really good.  Some are ordinary but have a lot of character.  And then there are the ones that are just disappointing.

The service is very friendly, but the food isn't so hot.  My omelet was all right except that the mushroom slices tasted funny.  They weren't bad or anything, but they definitely were from a can, and I have a feeling that can had been sitting around for a while.  The restaurant also isn't very clean.  There were flies buzzing around everywhere, and while that can be a universal problem in some geographic areas, it combined with the general lack of cleanliness to sort of gross me out.

    Sort of.

Honestly, in order to get a really good sense of what this place is all about, I'd probably have to have some kind of crazy dessert.  But a diner should shine at breakfast as well, and it didn't.  It's also odd that you have to go outside and walk around the building to enter the rest rooms, gas-station style.

A pretty standard diner along Highway 395.  Friendy service, typical American food offerings.

As far as small mountain town restaurants go, this might be better than most.  But in the grand scheme of things, it's just a little diner.

We stopped here for breakfast this morning. This place is a simple, old school diner. Nothing fancy but when you're hungry and out on the 395, who cares. I had the basic  eggs, sausage, toast, hash browns. All good! The hash browns were exceptional.  My brother had the sausage and jack cheese omelette. The thing was smothered in cheese and he said it was fantastic.  We will definitely be stopping by this place next time we are out that way. It was also nice to see that Flo got another job after working at Mel's diner. Thanks for the great service!

(I have to repost this because I had it under the wrong business!)

Always discouraged by the clusterf**k of parking at Schat's in Bishop, and the crowds looking for a getaway meal in the town of Mammoth Lakes, but hungry for some good grub before the long ride home to Southern Cal?

If you can hold out for a few minutes longer, hit the Country Kitchen for some delicious diner-style comfort food just a little bit south of the main Bishop drag (where Schat's is) on the 395, in Big Pine.   It's on the west side of the street.

There's tons of parking, and was nice and un-crowded even when we pulled in even at 11:45am after a holiday weekend.  Only 1 waitress services the whole place, but she is so fast and efficient that you won't likely have to wait.

Homestyle diner selections, all fried up on the grill fresh to order!  I had a tuna melt with side of onion rings.  The t-melt was crispy and buttery delicious, and the tuna itself had yummy relish in it.  Jessie and Leila split an order of french fries, chicken tenders, and biscuits & gravy.  They said the biscuits needed sausage (gravy didn't have it in there.)   Fries were fresh and tasty with Season Salt on them.

And it is pretty cheap too.   Worth the wait to not have to suffer through crowded Mammoth breakfast places, and not have to deal with bad parking and crazy tourists who want to buy some cheese-stuffed Schats bread.

We ate here a couple times over the Fourth of July holiday when we climbed White Mountain.

The place is a mixture of locals and tourists using the 395, and not to be bad, you can tell the difference.  It has simple decor, but the service was really good and we had the same server both times and she was great.

First time, had the cheeseburger, and it was pretty good, and the fries were really good.  It was also a nice treat to get a bottle of Sierra Nevada.  The club sandwich my wife had looked good and she said it was good!

We then had breakfast there on our way back south.  It wasn't bad at all, but I have to say that in a Denver Omelette, it is good to have fresh bell peppers, that would have made the breakfast GREAT!

Over all, I'd eat here again, and most likely will as we travel the 395 often.

A little coffee shop, next to a gas station. The locals seem to frequent the place, and I've been here several times. The last time I had a bad experience with the service and the waitress was snippy and rude, even tho I was in the company of a local resident. Probably won't go back, but the food is passable for the location and it's generally the only place in town. Nothing to write home about, but it will keep you alive.
If you are ravenously hungry, ready to eat anything as long as it is organic, if you are dusty, sweaty, tired and exhausted, and cannot drive another block, this might be the place. Otherwise, keep driving north to Bishop or south to Lone Pine.

Really good home cooking.  Nothing fancy about this place. It's your typical diner with a bunch of booths and a counter with a handful of seats. We stopped here during a lunch break on the long trip back to LA from Mammoth and we were pretty satisfied.

They had chicken fried steak on the dinner portion of the menu (after 3pm).  It was 1pm and we asked.  They were in the middle of a shift change and were able to accommodate the request for the chicken fried steak.  The meal came with a soup or salad and a side of fries or mash potatoes.  On top of that, I ordered a side of onion rings for the group.

I had the soup to start.  It was homemade turkey - vegetable soup.  YUMMY.  It was definitely homemade with shredded turkey with carrots and celery.  Nicely balanced and tasty.  I slurped it up quick!

The chicken fried steak was great!  I know chicken friend steak having worked in Dallas for a year.  This was legit.  The breading was excellent, the steak wasn't the best quality, but good enough for chicken fried steak.  The gravy sealed the deal.  It was rich and a little peppery.

The mashed potatoes seemed to be out of a box, but were adequate, especially since there was gravy on top.

Lastly, don't forget to try the onion rings.  Pretty dang good.  Beats the heck out of Burger King onion rings!

Service was good - quick, friendly.  No complaints there.  I'll definitely come back.

The sign really says it all....about six times.  I'm assuming the clientle in these parts aren't mind giants.  At the top of the sign it says "OPEN"....and then cascades down with:

    Country
    Kitchen
    Restaurant
    Breakfast
    Lunch Dinner

And if that redundancy wasn't enough, the sign transgresses from benign description to commandment and adds:

STOP & EAT at the bottom.

I couldn't help but think "why?"  Why the excessiveness?  The overwhelming redundancy?  Perhaps the original owner was thinking biblically?  eg 'you can drag a horse to water, but you can't make him drink?"  This surely was the closest equivalent to that in advertising....so in the end he felt it necessary to just COMMAND hungry (but stubborn) people to eat here.  Or perhaps maybe the owner was afraid that locals or some passer-bys only could read certain words, so he just decided to throw up as many synonyms associated with food as possible, hoping they'd understand at least one word.

I wasn't one to really talk.  After spending 3 icy nights and 4 brutally cold days camping and hiking like nomads in the back country of Death Valley without electricity, cell phones, running water, bathrooms, mirrors or showers my brother and I kind of looked like the average person I imagine this place intends to attract.  But whereas our troglodyte twins would only see "Kiayanbv rqoekaa EAT," we saw the humor in all of that almost OCD repetitiveness and stepped out of my filthy FJ Cruiser and into the 1950s.  Yeah....this place has the feeling of being a 10 year old diner that had been assembled rather hastily in 1945.  I liked it.   I liked the food, I liked the waitress, I liked the fact that old men were sitting in what they most certainly considered their own tables eating oatmeal and savoring the local paper and some jam.  Wasn't quite a 'day in the life of a Big Pine local' but it definitely was a 'breakfast in the life'....

Minus one star for the cook microwaving the shit out of my bacon because I asked for it 'extra crispy".

We arrived at the restaurant about 7:20pm  (they close at 8:00) and the place was mostly empty, so there is no excuse of arriving during the dinner rush.  My wife ordered the steak sandwich, it was overcooked and tasted of burned grill.  She was unable to eat the steak and resigned herself to having the French fries for dinner.   My friend and I ordered the chicken parmesan, although the spaghetti w/meat sauce was good, the chicken was overcooked to the point of being dry and unchewable.  We both passed on eating the chicken and left it on the plate.  When I paid the bill I told the waitress about the food.  She said 'sorry' and that she would 'let them know' but did not offer to discount our $52.00 bill.  You would be well advised to drive the extra 15 minutes to Bishop for a better selection of restaurants.
