fun little diner-esque place in downtown san mateo. i've always passed by this place and never even gave it a second thought. once again, i was passing and said to my husband, "jeffrey's? what is that place?" husband - "you've never been? we'll have to go sometime."

months later...

after a smorgasbord of cupcakes (http://www.yelp.com/bi...), we needed real food...so, we slopped it up at jeffrey's. i look at the menu and say, "hmm, i'll get the double cheeseburger" thinking it must be the same caliber of a double double from in-n-out. husband - "whoa, really?!" wife - "oh, is that too big?" now the image of two 1 pound patties together freaks me out. wife - "okay, the bacon cheeseburger". we proceed, ask for medium rare, a side of chili cheese fries, and a soda to share.

there's a little station with all the condiments (which people should really not offer endless amounts of pickles because i will take advantage). so, i load my burger with the goods, and a-1, and a few extra pickle spears. the burger was good for the most part, but mine was not super perfect...it wasn't medium rare, it was more like medium to medium-well and my bacon was a little more crispy than i prefer, but all in all, a good burger. the chili cheese fries were good, but honestly, i think it's a little difficult to eff up a chili cheese fry.

yeah, definitely a fan.

Not terrible, not great. They got the glass window where you can see the guy in the back grinding his meat, so I thought wow, the meat will be very fresh! I got excited when I saw that, but when I had the burger, it was just ok. Maybe I should give them another try.

By the way. One time I walked by the place, I saw this very hefty woman sitting down with her back to the window. I saw her butt almost completely exposed. Her butt must have been almost 3 feet across!

After a long bike ride, all I wanted was a burger.  I allowed a friend to take me wherever, since she knew the Peninsula much better than me.  She chose Jeffrey's, and I was not let down.
We arrived at opening time and the staff were buzzing about cleaning tables and setting up.  I ordered an Avocado Burger with Blue Cheese and was happy that they asked me how I wanted it prepared.  I was a bit disappointed that there were no sweet potato fries, but I'll live.  The burger was good, although it seemed to have fallen apart during cooking and shoved into the bun anyway.  This made it hard to eat, but I devoured it anyway.
I like the condiments bar--everything is fresh and there are all the pickles you can eat!

Best burgers in the world!  Whether you get a regular beef burger or a turkey burger, the meats are juicy and delicious!  I usually get the avocado cheeseburger and my man gets the turkey burger.  According to him, turkey burgers are often dry and taste a bit like cardboard but the ones here are so flavorful, you might mistake it for beef.  So if you are allergic to beef (like he is) or just want to eat healthier, I highly recommend the turkey burgers here.

Of course, you can't have burgers without fries and the fries here are definitely mouthwatering good: always crunchy and never under- or over-cooked.  However, if you like thinner fries (e.g., McDonald's fries), you may be a bit disappointed.

Also noteworthy is their service.  Though the staff don't talk much, they are always cordial and prompt at cleaning the tables for the next patron.  I wish more people would leave them tips.

Jeffrey's is where it's at, hamburgerwise. They aren't sliders or huge baseball patties, they're just right. Cooked to whatever you actually ask for (is medium-rare hard to achieve?) and seasoned well. One of my favorite burgers of all time. Their fries are terrific as well.

Got a mushroom burger with swiss, cheddar and grilled onions.  loved the burger.  very filling, could only eat half.  Had a side of onion rings.  Ive had better onion rings, will definitely get fries next time.  If you are in the mood for a good burger, try this place out.

I like to try different types of burgers from different restaurants but whenever I'm at Jeffrey's, I keep it classic. Bacon cheeseburger and fries. I don't know what makes it so good. Maybe the beef, or the condiments bar, who knows. It's just great. Make use of the self serve condiments bar and you're set. I love the dill pickles they serve here. Doesn't compare to the grocery jarred pickles for some reason.

and I took my family here and they loved it as much as I did.

This place rocks my world.

I love being able to customize my food, and Jeffrey's makes this possible.   This place is so cute, so fun, with great service and awesome food.   The friend who took me here has been going here forever and swears it is a carnivore's dream.

It is also a vegatarian's dream.   The veggie burger was terrific.  (Although they didn't mention that is came with a wheat bun which I hate, so if you want a regular bun, be sure to ask for it.)  The toppings bar was so cool.   The onion rings were top-notch.  And the price was right.

I love Jeffrey's!!

THIS is a good place.  Kinda a 50's diner kitsch (and WAY too much 50's coca-cola influence...blah), this is truly a hamburger joint.  We went today and ordered:
- bacon cheeseburger (that would be me, the health nut)
- cheeseburger (the wife, on a diet)
- club sandwich (the wife's nephew...healthy denver kinda guy)

Oh...and basket of fries.  NOT garlic fries (but man did I want to try them...but you can NOT be the only person in a group to order garlic fries...words to live by).

So, the two burgers, awesome.  I LOVE the idea of a burger bar - get served the basics, and go do you own thing.  Screw it up?  Your fault.  Make a masterpiece?  Da best.....(and Jeffey's deserves a bit of credit at that point).

The fries?  Awesome. Crispy. The way fries are meant to be (are you listening, Wendy's?  Burger King? Mac's?  (ok, forget that last one, they never listen)).

So the ONLY ding...and yes, it's worth a star.  To have a burger...and yes, a real burger, cooked to order....served with fake cheese....well, it's borderline a crime.  And CERTAINLY worth the loss of a star.

Everything else is a home run.  I'll be back (fake cheese and all).

This place is cool as hell! Well if you are into that anyway... I entered this hamburger haven just before closing and was still treated like a king! The gentleman behind the counter was very helpful and made some tasteful recommendations. I had the avocado burger with mushrooms and jack cheese it was great. What made my experience better was the decor of this place. It made me feel like I was in an old skool fountain shop and my burger was concocted by a soda jerk.

Hold on a sec, it gets better! The condiment bar.... Wow! I have never ever seen anything like this before! Almost anything you can think of is here for your burger's love! Check it out!

This place is good and the burgers are delicious, but if I'm in the mood for burgers, I don't think this would be my first choice. Nothing against them but very little on the menu screams out at me as "this is one item you will not find anywhere else."

Don't get me wrong, I came here with a group of co-workers during the lunch madness and they were slammed. They quickly cleaned off tables and served food, also very attentive. Good portions but yeah, I'd rather head to another burger joint to get something that I couldn't get anywhere else.

After hearing about how good and fresh the burger is, I had to try it. So I ordered the Mushroom Swiss Burger with garlic fries. The burger was really good, the meat was so juicy. Can't say much for the garlic fries because it just a french fry with minced garlic on it (I think it was raw because it still white) I don't think they fry it with the french fry.  I still think Red Robin taste better with a better atmosphere compared to this joint. But the price is about the same.

Would have been a better rating if I didn't order chili cheese fries. After hyping Jeffrey's up to my girl, we finally had a chance to check it out. this time, it wasn't the Menlo one, it was san mateo, so both of our first times.
It's a lot smaller than the other one, and the customers aren't as happy (although a few were)......
Ordered 2 cheeseburgers, regular fries, and chili cheese fries.
Staff was friendly, bathroom was clean (even though you had to walk thru the kitchen to get there), and the place looked clean altogether except for a little bit of a fly problem. Outside seating had more than a little bit of fly prob., so we kept it inside.
Our food was brought out, and they had marked the medium burger "well" and didn't mark the well, but my girl caught it, so I was happy.....I have to have my burgers burnt!
Condiment station was great.....and everything was good quality and fresh. Burger & fries were very good, but the chili cheese fries were garbage. This was the first time I've had chili cheese fries that tasted sweet......had to deduct a star.
If you're in the area, definitely check it out, but u've been warned about the chili cheese fries.

Not great, not bad, 3 stars is dead on for Jeffrey's if you ask me.

The burgers are average... hate to say it, but I think I'd go to In N Out over this place any and everytime.  Not that that's an insult... In N Out is bomb, but i'd expect more from an actual resteraunt.

I've had a couple differnet kinds, they tend to be messy a bit tough to eat and always a little dry (even when I ordered medium rare).  This time I got the fish and chips and I was pretty impressed.  My friend got shrimp and chips and was equally pleased, so definately try those out too.  I've heard the chicken burger is decent, though I haven't gotten there yet.

All in all it's ok.  Nothing special, so only go if you're running out of ideas.

Jeffrey's makes my favorite super delicious teriyaki burger, complete with pineapple ring. I wish I knew how they made them so tasty and juicy! The milkshakes and malts are heavenly and are served the old fashioned way - enough for 2.

There is plenty of available parking in the Main Street public garage. It's only a block away and free after 6pm and on Sundays.

Classic, unpretentious hamburger joint.  These guys were doing hamburgers right, before it became something of a trend to make upscale hamburgers.  This is the kind of place where you order at the counter, they bring you the burgers, and you go up to the fixins bar to load up on tomato, lettuce, pickles and such.

The bacon cheeseburger is outstanding - loaded up with mounds of really high quality bacon, not that questionable, fatty, bacon-like substance that other places try to hide in the bun.

HONESTLY THIS PLACE WAS NOT THAT GREAT, I WENT THERE TODAY. AND APPARENTLY NOT ONLY THE BURGERS DONT COME WITH A SIDE, U HAVE TO ORDER THE SIDE OF FRIES, BUT U EVEN HAVE TO GO GET YOUR CONDIMENTS DOWN THE HALL -_-* LIKE THEY HAD THE KETCHUP AND VINEGAR ON THE TABLE... BUT THE CONDIMENTS NOT LIKE MUSTARD & MAYO, BUT ALSO ALL THE ONIONS, LETTUCE, AND PICKLES WERE DOWN THERE!! I HAD NEVER EXPERIENCED THAT... THAT WAS WEIRD. I ORDERED THEIR CHEESEBURGER&GARLIC FRIES, THEIR GARLIC FRIES WERE LITERALLY CHOPPED UP PIECES OF GARLIC TOSSED ON TOP OF THEIR REGULAR FRIES... I WAS DISSAPOINTED. THE BURGER WAS ALRIGHT, I EXPERIENCED WAAAAY BETTER. THIS PLACE REMINDED ME OF BURGER JOINT, BUT WORSE. *SIGHS* I WOULD NOT GO BACK. SORRY.

Jeffrey's delivers a solid, straight forward burger with all the basic condiments in a clean diner environment.

Seating cramped and narrow compared with the Menlo Park location. If I didn't have anything to compare it with, I wouldn't have felt as cramped. Patio area no great shakes as it mostly just overlooks a parking lot.

All the talk this past weekend on Yelp on mayo vs mustard on hamburgers got me hankering for a good burger. Not only do they have mayo, mustard and ketchup on tap, they also have brown mustard on the side for us mustard -snobs.

I no longer have to go to Costco for their polish sausage, they have that here at Jeffrey's.
I'm not much of a burger person but if I ever get a craving for non-chain burger, fries and shake, this is the place to go. The mushroom burger here is delish. The mushrooms are thinly sliced and are piled over your choice of medium-rare/medium/well burger patty smothered with cheese. HMMM!!   I also love the garlic fries here. Unlike most places, they do not skimp on the garlic! Just make sure you chew a piece of gum or two after.

Beef patty
And bacon, I do love,
Classic diner menu from up above.
Big juicy burgers I'm often fed,
Ordered well done and slightly bloody red.
Real milkshakes are a rare treat,
They serve salads too if you're not into meat.
Crispy onion rings will do,
Breaded nicely, I'll eat more than two.
Chili hot dogs I do adore,
If it wasn't for my diet, I'd order four more.
But of all the many cuts of meat,
Every mammal fit to eat,
Save some room for the most blessed:
The bacon double cheeseburger is the best.

Thank you Jeffrey's!!!

Useful Notes:
* $6.89 for the bacon cheeseburger.  $4.49 for large onion rings.
* Parking still sucks!  Minus one star.  Bring 50 cents for the meters good for one hour.
* Back patio is still the best seat in the house (provided its sunny)!

I'm going to agree with Kaio, this is one of the best burgers that I've ever had, and I have had a lot (check my comprehensive "Burger List").

The bacon-cheeseburger I had was well done and well-juicy! How do you grill and yet maintain the "jugo" ?? The totality was very much greater than the sum of the parts! The only way I can summarise my 5 Star! experience at Jeffrey's??

I've eaten here a few times.  It's nothing fancy, but definitely good.

What I've tried here;
* Grilled cheese sandwich (tasty)
* Hamburger (cooked to your preferred doneness, thumbs up)
* Fries (hot, fresh, & yummy)
* Vanilla  & chocolate milkshakes (old-fashioned and delicious)

Impressions:
+ Restaurant is clean.
+ Service is quick and friendly.
+ Food is basic and reliable.

My apologies to the other patrons for my son and his friend's squeals of delight (inside voices please, boys!) every time a train goes by.  We can see trains pass a couple blocks east of the restaurant, which always is incredibly exciting stuff.  This is a fun, kid-friendly restaurant.

Not crazy about it.  We tried this becoz all the great reviews from yelp, but somehow....i don't agree.
I had mushroom burger (medium) and it's a bit dry.  I still like barney's burger or bistro burger better.
My husband had a double cheese turkey burger and he liked it (i guess becoz he skipped his breakfast lol).
the rings..arrh..very disappointed, tasteless.  The garlic fries..nothing special at all.  One thing that I enjoy though, the cozy seating area..that's all.

There were some goods and some bads.

I'll start with the bads (and obviously some of this is subjective):  (1) your burger is served totally plain without sauces, (2) they ask you how your want the burger cooked but I think they pretty much char 'em all, (3) burger was really thin . . . (but let's be honest what do you expect for a $6 burger?)

Goods:  (1)  there was an extensive burger topping bar (tomatoes, lettuce, jalapenos), (2) they have beer on tap and it was good, (3) it was cheap, and (4) the "diner" atmosphere was fun.

All and all a good joint but I won't rush back.

Driving down 101 from sf on a 3pm afternoon with craving for the munchies we ducked in this place in san mateo for its the only place open for late lunch it seems..most restaurants in the area was closed by 2pm.  a typical 50's style diner but with mexican's in the kitchen..wait i think the majority of them were including the cashier...but im not hating for the burgers were awesome~  i ordered the mushroom burger which had a huge all beef patty and melted swiss cheese with a heaping of sauteed mushrooms...side order of onion rings and fries...the fries were actually ok..but the rings they used the huge sweet vidalia onions that was nice and yummy...the burger was cooked well as ordered (medium well) very moist and tasty.. i highly recommend! id give it a 3.5/5 judochops...sorry couldnt give it a 4...i like my fries crispy.

The best non-gourmet burger in the bay!!!! I wouldn't call Jeffrey's a diner, I personally just consider it a burger joint.

Simple but great -- milkshakes & onion rings are also a great addition to any burger.

Its been a few years since we been back to Jeffrey's Hamburgers.  Its good to know the quality of their burgers have not changed.  We arrived on a Sunday morning 11am ish - lots of street parking and nearby parking lots free.

We ordered: cheese burger, bacon cheese burger, fish & chips, & large onion rings.  Soda w/free refills.  The staff was attentive and diner was clean.  At 11:30am the diner was starting to fill up, by noon this joint was packed and lots of phone orders.

Jeffrey's a cool place and their shakes are pretty good too.  YUM!

Best hamburger joint in the peninsula, its up there with Val's in Hayweird, lol

Just had a triple bacon burger last night ($12).  Meat was medium, the real medium, not the dry to the bone medium.  Is it me or are some of these burger joints like Jersey Joe's claiming a medium which is actually well done.  Anyways, the burger was great and will definitely be hitting this place up more often.  Plus I like the fact that you can see the chef cooking your meal from the counter....

I love the burgers here!  They are fresh and juicy! =)

I came here with my boyfriend for lunch on a Saturday, and it was busy.
We had to order the food at the counter, pay, grab a number, and then find a table to sit.

I decided to order a regular hamburger.  My boyfriend ordered a cheeseburger and onion rings.  Our onion rings came out first (after 10 minutes).  They were big, hot, and crispy!  We only got 5 onion rings though..lol.  The onion rings were really tasty.  There were at least 2 rings inside each batter.

Our burgers came out next.  We went to the condiment table to add toppings.  There were tomatoes, lettuce, whole pickles, sliced pickles, onions, ketchup, mustard, and bbq sauce.  I liked how there were no flies around the condiments.

After putting on all the toppings, I thought I would have trouble eating my hamburger.  I couldn't fit the whole width of the burger in one bite, so I had to take at least 2 bites to enjoy the top and bottom. =)  The burger was cooked really well and it was juicy.

I'll definitely come back to Jeffery's for more burgers.

I moved to a downtown San Mateo condo in 1999 when I was approx. twelve. Since then, I cannot recall how many times I have came here for, very specifically, a pineapple-teriyaki hamburger (medium) with lettuce, pickles, and onions. And of course, a soda. Sometimes, I would buy a second to bring back to my office for later. I hope this place NEVER closes.

It has also served countless times as a great hangover-food place within a few minutes walking of my place. It opens at 11am fyi  :-)
