Review from Sarah D.
Bristol, CT
We hung around Putney literally ALL afternoon to check out the Irish music and have some eats. Figured it would be your standard pub fare but didn't expect anything special. As it turned out, the food was anything but standard! We both ordered from the specials board (a rarity!)...
I tried the chilled cucumber soup, served with a dollop of sour cream and beautiful edible flower. Holy Moses, yes!! Never thought a cold soup could so move me. Derek tried the grilled quarter of chicken with twice baked potato and sweet corn on the cob. Based on the enthusiasm with which he tucked in, I'd say it was a win. On the waitress' recommendation I opted for the nachos with chicken and veggies (again with the appetizer meal...) She did not steer me wrong: my chips were beautifully smothered in black beans, cheese, diced chicken, a medley of diced peppers, onions, and zucchini, and toasted to perfection. Wash it down with a pint or two of the elusive Vermont Switchback and this Nutmegger was happy!
This is not mentioning the top notch service, coziness and friendly atmosphere, and fantastic live Irish tunes to cap off a lovely evening in Putney. ... Well... that and a Dewar's ;-) -

Putney, VT
A pub that serves rancid fish and chips and dry overcooked burgers on stale buns. They may have been good at one time but they have just stopped trying. There are better places in Putney to get pub food.

If Wednesday night is open in your book, stop by! The Wednesday Irish Sessions night is such a great experience for the whole family with lots of great music played by local musicians. The food is descent, the atmosphere is cozy and welcoming - an overall great place!

J.D. McCliment's Pub is overall good and it does serve the needs of Putney and the campus nearby, I would recommend it to anyone stopping by. They make decent drinks though Everclear cannot be sold in Vermont so don't expect them to make anything that will tear you to pieces. When it comes to interiors JD's as it is known locally has great amounts of New England charm ( I remember it being cozy on the various winter nights). The food is usually good I would recommend the Cheesecake and their burgers. The staff is usually prompt and friendly, basically it is one of the best places to eat in Putney.

JD's just so happens to be located literally across the street from a college that just so happens to be a dry campus. Yeah, JD must make a fortune. I sure hope so, he is one hell of a guy. This place was quite popular when I went to school there, both with locals and students. I just wish it had opened 6 months earlier (JD's wasn't around until the end of summer 04.) I'm sure it still draws a great crowd. I haven't been for at least a couple years, but I've heard it has undergone some renovations. Heck, it even has a website!
I actually drove by the other afternoon when I was visiting friends nearby. I wish I could have stayed later to drop by and say hello.
*Was once the Old Welsh Tavern, but that was before my time. -

Amazing (and pretty reasonably priced) food. Best black bean burger I've ever had, hands down. And the small, cozy atmosphere was really nice. Definitely a must if you're in the area.
