First time experience with Jax. Despite reading a few of the negative reviews, I decided to get some work done on my bike out of mere convenience, being one of the closest bike shops around. I was greeted by a woman named Sarah who quickly and easily helped me get my new headset installed. Surprisingly it was much cheaper than msrp, however, the installation was quite high. normally $15 at other bike shops, i got charged $35. I asked for a discount but none was given.  If not for the high service charge, i would have given Jax 5 stars.

DON'T COME HERE! Bad customer service. An asshole associate named Josh ruined our day of bike shopping. Pretty much rudely told us not to touch and lay off a $3500 bike. Acted as if I couldn't afford the f-in bike.  It was on clearance for a discounted price for gosh sakes. When asked for his name, he wouldn't give to us.  We had to speak to his manager to get his name.  What a dick!  It's 2008 and I can't believe this lil biatch type casted my cousin and I.

Store itself looked alright but Josh just ruined the Jax Bicycle experience for me. I will never return to this store. Sad how one incompetent salesperson can ruin a potentially decent stores reputation.  Blah!

This used to be the local bike shop I frequented when I lived in Lakewood - and would give them business simply out of simplicity to ride, buy, and ride. They do have lots of items in stock, are willing to transfer items from other stores.

But, when it comes to the parts and their service department, I was a little annoyed at being charged an $8-10 to have a tube changed on my bike, when I had just purchased the tube from them. And on a different occasion a $8-10 charge to have a chain put on, when I had just purchased the chain from them. This was not me bringing in outside parts and asking for the service - I just had paid for it and asked them to put it on (since I didn't have tools with me on either occasion.)

I would expect that if you're willing to buy the part from them, a 3-5 minute job shouldn't be costing you another $8-10.

Disappointing that a chain store doing a high volume of business can't do small services for customers that just purchased their parts.

Not impressed.  I went to four bike shops today.  Jax was by far the worst in terms of customer service.  I was looking at bikes for 20 minutes, nobody would approach so I went to ask 2 girls there for help, they were not interested.   Then I caught this 20-something typical bike shop guy, and he was a dick.  He was a real smart ass and eluded the "I am a cool biker, you are a poser, vibe".  I took a bike out on for a test spin, and he came with me, and once again was a dick.  I was sick of him talking to me like I was an idiot and asked him if he was pissed off; his surly ass denied it and huffed away.  I don't know what it is with some of these bike shop losers, Jax is not free of them.  I had a much better experience at BikeEcology in Hawthorne, although far, they were way nice, more knowledgeable, and didn't have the whole scenester judgmental holier than thou attitude that I found at Jax.  To top it off, Jax was pricing the trek I wanted for over 10% more than what BikeEcology was selling it for, which sealed the deal.

I went into this shop to pick up some tires, tubes, and a pump since it was the only one that I could think of in the area.

I entered the store and wasn't greeted or asked if I needed help by any employee, which I can deal with since that can be annoying. Not knowing my way around the shop made it a little difficult to find everything that I needed, but I managed to deal with it and found all the stuff that I needed.

When I went to pay for the items, I put them all on the counter next to the register. I then proceeded to stand there with credit card in hand waiting for someone to take my money so that I could get out of there and on with my life. After standing there for a good fifteen minutes and being completely and totally ignored (all I wanted was for someone to acknowledge the fact that they would help me at some point), I walked out of the store. I was completely ignored by the employees the entire time I was in there. Nobody said a word to me. Absolutely horrible service.

We just recently got a bike for my fianc and she spent a lot of time researching.  She called the Long Beach Jax as it was close to her work, and although they didn't have they bike she was looking for in stock, they called another store right away and had it transferred with no deposit or anything.  We went in, tried out a few different bikes, and she ended up going with that one she had picked from research.  they were very nice there, the manager was helping us and she took the time to show us other options.   Also, she told us we could bring it to any Jax for a tune-up whenever we needed.  That's pretty good, although cruisers don't need much maintenance.  We were happy with our experience there.

I bought my yellow Trek beach cruiser here... and do have to agree if you hit the store at the same moment that a handful of other people have, you might be waiting around for a bit.   But I looked at all the bikes and took my time. You definitely can't be in a hurry here.

The staff I found was helpful and rode w/ me in testing a couple of the cruisers.   Great selection of name brand bikes.

I think the week that I decided to seriously shop for a road bike must have been opposite-week.  Every small, individually owned bike shop that I went into didn't seem to offer very much service.  I went to Jax primarily because it's a chain and offers better prices, but ended up getting way high-end service.  Sarah P. helped me out and she was an awesome sales person.  She spent so much time going over the different bikes and even rode them with me, and in the end I ended up with the perfect bike.  She even spent time fitting it to me by perfectly setting the seat hight and changing the handle bar extension.  I ended up spending way more money than I planned on, but that's not the fault of their prices, I just ended up choosing higher end gear than I planned.  But, in hindsight I'm totally satisfied with my purchase.  I definitely recommend you ask for Sarah P. if you're looking for a serious bike.

Ok, so I haven't actually been here, but this was the second place I've called in the area that doesn't man it's phones with rude idiots.
The lady who answered the phone was friendly, well-informed, and was able to recommend a series of bikes *over*the*phone* based on my requirements in a matter of *minutes*!!!  She even quoted prices and encouraged me to look them up on the web, or come in.
I will quite literally be able to walk in, test ride three, and ride my new bike home.  *This* is the way to shop - fast, efficient, and a great value, without days or weeks of comparison shopping under the suspicious glares of pushy salespeople.  I *hate* shopping as I don't have time, money, or acetylcholine to waste!
And they have reasonable hours - I've tried two other shops but could never make it between 10a-4p M-F.

First time walking into the store and the place is quite busy due to the Labor Day holiday.  I stepped over to the racing bikes and within 1 minute a employee asked me how I was doing.  Polite questions and not the normal service questions.  I was just looking so I told him that.  Since the place was full of people he went on to someone else.  After assisting them he came back over and asked if was riding the specialized outside.  Perhaps the sweat drenched face and shirt was the clue.  I picked his brain a bit on bike maintance and he was very knowledgeable.   I asked if he could look at my bike and tell me what he thought from its condition.  We stepped outside and he gave it a full  inspection.  explaining everything he would change if it were his own bike and if he was using it to commute as I was.  I had some questions on chain wear and he explained how to know when to get a new chain.
One thing to another and I decided to buy a chain.  I came home and checked out the price of it and I could not have gotten it any cheaper from online retailers.

I will defiantly be going back again for more answers and a friendly face.

Also,
They offer you to ride the bike before any purchase and they are Trek certified for Maintance and customer service.

In general, I prefer to support smaller shops as opposed to chain stores like Jax. This shop has a large selection of bikes from high end road bikes to children's bikes and everything in between. They also have a decent selection of parts. The staff seems knowledgeable if you can ever manage to get the attention of one of them. They offer good personalized service, but since there are usually only 2-4 employees on the floor, if you are the 5th person to walk in, you may have to wait a while for help. The service department also takes forever to get served if there are others waiting. The mechanics seem good, but they charge more than I feel they should ($10 to put a tire on a rim, a job that will take 3 minutes at the most). They also charge for any little parts you may need. $.20 for a cable end. Smaller shops will often give you small parts like that, or install a tire for free if you purchase it from them, which is why I prefer them.
