This place is AWESOME for many reasons.
First of all, let me say I avoid PB like the plague. I hate the douchebag frat boy losers from PB more than I would hate getting herpes (I can imagine).
I was passing this place and on a whim decided to pull over and get coffee. The owner made my drink for me. He was very personable and a down to earth guy. Also, the people who were hanging out in there seemed really cool too and not your typical PB crowd.
He took the place over recently and remodeled it himself and hired new staff, so if you read old reviews of this place and they are negative, take note that those reviews reflect a place that no longer exists.
The coffee was very good, and from what I understand they serve organic food and have live music at times.
The interior was very comfortable and cosy. 5 stars all the way. The place also had great air circulation.
The outside seating was 5 stars all the way. It is the most comfortable outside seating for a coffee house that I have experienced in San Diego.
I like this place so much that I am willing to not only drive further to visit, but I am also willing to wade through the douchebag residents of this community to enjoy the coffee and people of Javanican.
Javanican just might be my favorite coffee house in San Diego now.Listed in: Top 10 Spots for Coffee

I go to this coffee shop almost every day. Everyone who works there is very friendly and extremely helpful. The coffee and food is fantastic! A lot of the food is organic and the coffee beans are roasted locally.
Try a bagel with the works!!
It's a great local business and very tied in to the neighborhood. Patrick, the owner, is also a really cool guy. -

I hate pistachio. I will avoid it all cost. Until I came across the pistachio baklava - wow! I'm not saying I will order it, but I will take a bite of someone's else ;)
My usual order is hot chocolate and bagel with cream cheese and tomato. Toasted. Easy and simple order- yet! Somehow the owner manages to make it feel special. How many coffee shops bring your order to your table/sofa? How many will step out from behind the cash register just to make sure you are enjoying your food? I love this place! -

Coffee & Flight school, anyone? Love this place. Aside from the tasty coffee, it has a unique ambiance to it.. The owner is a modern-day renaissance man - business owner, musican, pilot, artist, etc.. He sells his artwork & CDs in the store, and also advertises that he owns a business giving flight lessons. Yes, you can earn your pilot's license from the guy.. They also have open mic nights here.
They are the *only* organic coffee house that I know of in SD, and their food is delicious as well!! Do yourself a favor and order a veggie wrap and mixed fruit smoothie (yes its ALL FRUIT, nothing else) and then top it off with a fresh piece of homemade baklava - YUM!!
Oh here's a link to their Flight Training Website:

I appreciate organic coffee and the Javanican serves up an abundance of organic coffee, but this funky coffee shop kinda grossed me out
I think the Javanican is too dingy and dirty. The place certainly has an earthy feel and the patrons I saw there looked like a cast of characters, but the place is a little too rustic for my taste -- the building didn't even look like it was up to code.
I ordered a vanilla latte with soy and it tasted pretty bland and cost about four bucks.
And how many hippies can afford $4 coffee on a regular basis? -

This was one of the many coffee places I tried out during my initial visits to SD. I give it credit for being purple---on the outside hehe...pretty attention-grabbing. I feel kind of bad saying this especially since the lady at the register was pretty nice, but I had what I consider the worse iced tea I've ever had at this place. The latte was a little better, but I can't shake off the bad tea experience :|
There's def. better cafes in PB.
Oh, and btw on their website it says that "....the name 'Javanican' derives from the idea of a Coffee nationality." -

This is a tough coffeehouse to figure out. In one sense, it is a cute little house/hut near the library that serves up a decent (but by no means exceptional) cuppa joe or cappuccino. In another sense, it is staked out on the mainest of main streets in PB with all attendant noise, and is across the street from an auto garage, so the overall atmosphere could be better.
But in a third sense, it is a very strange shrine to some kind of rock (I want to say heavy metal goth) band and its lead singer, who I think is named Sluka. What I can't get my head around is if that helps or hurts the overall vibe. It is quite weird, granted, but interesting in its own way. I went there more than once when I was walking by, but never had the inclination to stay long. One thing I can say for sure: it ain't corporate. Try it out and maybe you will have an experience to remember.Listed in: San Diego Coffeehouses

This place rocks! It has a new owner and a new vibe, and the entire interior has been redone.
I used to tutor students here before I had my own office. It's tiny, yes, but there is so much character, and they feature live music most nights of the week. Parking is pretty easy most days, and they have outdoor seating areas on both sides of the building. They also keep lots of local newspapers and magazines on hand so that you can catch up on your reading while you get your caffeine fix.
Try ordering the Green Mint Iced Tea...it's amazing! -

I once had some Sluka stuck to the bottom of my shoe, and let me tell you, that's some tenacious shit!
Actually I used to go to the Javanican (how the hell do you pronounce that? no one knows) pretty often when rolling out of town, and the coffee ain't bad.
I too have to agree with Bob H. -- "it ain't corporate!" -

Love this place, love the ambiance, and the owner is a nice guy. There's some reservations I have about the business model as a whole, but that's not relevant for Yelp. Overall, recommended. Above average coffee, I always order the Mocha and like it.

Tasty Americano's with hazelnut!
Regular coffee is OK but I'm not keen on the way a lot of coffee shops make their coffee in the morning and let it sit all day in the flask thing and still sell that all day long.
Iced coffees are good, they have ice made out of coffee INGENIOUS! No more watered down iced coffee!
They even have doggie treats for my little friend! -

it's purple on the outside, pretty big interior for a cafe and plenty of outdoor seating which is great for nice warm days and it's walkable distance from the beach (PB)!
I love that it's pet-friendly. I brought my dog here and sat outside where there's even a small doggie water bowl. It's so nice to be able to take my dog to places like this one. They even said I could bring him inside!
I had the caramel blended drink. Minus one star for wanting to charge me an extra 50 cents for using my debit card.
I also enjoyed the artwork displayed on the walls inside Purple cafe. Some are priced for sale and there seems to be about 3-4 different artists on display, I'm guessing they're local. Abstract, colorful works that I hope to be able to purchase some day.
I will definitely be back here. Especially for the comfy couch. Words don't do justice.. you need to check this place out if you like to have your coffee in a place that feels like home. -

I completely agree with Bob H's post about this place. The name alone is "how bizarre" and the ambiance kind of freaks me out. And I dig a freaky coffee shop as much as the next guy, but this place is so hard to put a finger on that I don't think even the super freaky freaks feel comfortable there. They do have live music now and then, but I've never been drawn to this place and I really don't know anyone who has.

Just like most other reviewers said, I'm not sure what to make of this place. I dig the hippy vibe, including the music. But I definitely didn't like the fact that the lady behind the counter was chit-chatting with her friends on the phone and out front rather than helping me (all I wanted was some coffee!). Also, though the furniture looks cool and antique, it is horrendously uncomforatble. Plus, it was dirty. Not dirty in an unsanitary sort of way, because I would have left immediately and given 1-star, but rather just very untidy. The tables were covered in crap, there were leaves and petals all over the floor, etc. I might go back if I need some coffee in a hurry, but it isn't likely.

This place made one of the best BLT's I've had, for a good price. The new blonde girl did a great job, and she was very nice (at least I think shes new, I've never seen her before). Chill spot; good food.

This Cafe is the best I have ever been to .
It has a great location, great vibe, cool atmosphere and the nicest owner in the world- Patrick.
The bagels rival any I have had and the coffee really packs a punch. The smoothies are 100% fruit and the best hangover cure comes in the shape of a breakfast burrito. It really eases the pain on a sunday morning.
Pacific Beach has a purple jem, that jem is on the corner of cass and grand. I miss that place!
