Review Highlights
Java Jungle is downtown Reno's gem. It's a cozy coffeehouse with great coffee, tea, mochas, pizza, sandwiches and other goodies. I'll admit, I mostly use them for the free WiFi haha. Out of the dozens of times I've used their internet, it's never once failed or slowed down. The paintings displayed on their walls from local artists is ever-changing and a visual delight. Sitting by the windows on weeknights is perfect for watching drunk people stumble around downtown Reno, prime real estate.
The only "downside" is how cramped the place gets in the winter, I feel like there aren't enough tables or places for individual seating. Also, some of the customers are completely nuts, which can be funny or bad, depending on how mean you are. Oh, and watch out for Wine Walk! Java Jungle is packed shoulder-to-shoulder with tipsy Renoites during Wine Walk, don't expect to find a place to sit.
Highly recommended!
Java Jungle is one of my favorite places to work remotely in Reno. Not because they have such great coffee, or sandwiches or whatever. But because their internet is consistently fast and dependable.
The decor is weird, bordering on bizarre without any specific direction other than loud (jungle-themed?). But, it's a great spot to grab a well-worn seat on the couch, pop your headphones in, and get some stuff done. There's ample people-watching to distract you every so often if you're so inclined.
Coffee is decent, and they have some pretty okay chai teas. I've always had prompt service, but the pace of the drink making is slower than a starbucks aficionado might prefer.
Smokers: There is a big patio area that you smoking types seem to love. You'll have plenty of chain smoking company from the regulars who hang out 18 hours a day.
Bottom line: not the best in the world, but certainly not bad. I go there a few times a week because it's conveniently located.
Really good coffee, great location by the river in downtown Reno. Park is right there if you want to swim around or get your feet wet.
Brownie was really good and massive cookies - biggest I've seen in my life.
Recommended...!
I had the chai coffee cold and the strawberry smoothie & both were really good! Free WiFi too =)
There are a number of reasons why I like this place. Good coffee and friendly service are not among them.
I've been coming to java jungle for a really long time and have watched as this place has gone back and fourth from really great to really crappy. Currently they are inbetween.
It's location to downtown and the river are great! The variety of customers is truely interesting and is constantly a good source of humor. I enjoy the local artist work that they but up for sale and have purchased a couple of works..
I would never tell someone to not go here. But I wouldn't give it any 'rave' reviews either.
I gave three stars for loyality, location, hours of operation, and the bizarre customers.
I realize that times are hard but over two dollars for a medium drop coffee (with no free refill) is a tad out of the question. I got better service and coffee at dennys.
Why don't I go hang out at dennys? No out door seating nor by the river.
I recently went to Java Jungle, and I tried their hot chocolate with hazelnut. It was fantastic! Their customer service could have been better at the time, but this might be a result of the crowds I encountered when I was there.
I would never discourage anyone from going here if they haven't before.
Wierdos, goths, elitists, hipsters, college kids, poets, artists, anarchists; they're all here. Trust me, I"ve had experiences with all kinds and combinations of them.
Coffee is mostly yummy- my soy chai lattes haven't been very good though.
Fun to go with smaller groups- couch space and tables are usually taken.
Although Java Jungle feels a bit like home, I'm over it; people there are usually pretentious and annoying (besides the baristas). Art displayed sometimes reflects that. It's just a trendy place to be seen in general.
I don't drink coffee, but if I lived in Reno, I'd come here. Their unique sweet and spicy tuna melt tickled my taste buds in the right way.
Every college town has a place like this. Some have more than one. You know what I mean: walls painted by a tagger with ADD. Heavily inked clientele living off Mom n Dad. An edgy menu wittily chalked up in multi colors on a board.
This place is the coolest coffeehouse ever. Until you go to another town and find one just like it. It's sort of like the first time you leave home and discover that the wacky morning crew you listen to on your favorite radio station is the same in every city.
Yet we did find the staff to be very friendly and useful and they made the best foam I've probably had all year. The espresso? Not so much though I don't blame that on the staff. I don't think they were the ones who took Starbucks beans and ground them up with charcoal.
Stop by here for a custom made sandwich and free wi-fi. Or don't. It gets plenty of business without you.
This is a well thought of place in a pretty good location. I do a lot of online work, but I rarely if ever find the need to go online when I am out for lunch. So I don't take advantage of the wifi service available. I'm not a coffee drinker, but I likes me tea and cocoa.
I've seen the motif plenty of times, so no surprises for me, and like so many boutique eateries, the service was very good. I think when you don't have too much imagination, you just slap it together ala 90's eclectic. I wont go out of my way to stop in but I can honestly say I will never avoid the joint.
This place is awesome.
If you want to step aside from the Starbucks hum drum (I love Starbucks, but sometimes I need a good ole' hometown coffee shop) then head to Java Jungle!
The staff is always smiling and kind and willing to do whatever they can to make your coffee experience perfect.
On a sunny afternoon there is nothing better than an italian soda with a bit of cream, a good book or laptop computer (to take advantage of the free wi-fi) and a myriad of people cruising past the patio area.
The best people watching and coffee in downtown Reno. You CAN'T beat a combo like that.
Vanilla cap when it's chilly outside and italian sodas on summer days.
Drop by and enjoy a sip of Reno.
Dropped in for a morning cup of chai after six years of avoidance--a latte on 09/08/01 lead to an argument with my fiance that lead to a car crash that almost killed us on 09/11/01. But I won't hold that against them.
An http://Entertainment.com coupon reminded me of the cafe and that they were still in business. That the discount was on the least expensive item pissed off the wife, but she chilled as we sipped the chai and the steamed milk out on the patio, saving $10 by using their wifi instead of the Eldorado to check on e-mail and confirm that Amtrak was running on time.
The only other "bad" was the city maintenance guy using a leaf blower to clean off the neighboring pubic space.
Java Jungle reminds me of the coffee houses I used to haunt in the early '90s before Starbucks took over the world...hip and casual with lots of culture and events, plenty of local charm. The location is convenient to the movie theater and the river, making this a great place to hang out or just to stop by before a show. Free wifi means that there are usually plenty of folks working on their laptops, and there are several tables, a couple of couches, and a counter to accommodate them. In the warmer months, their patio is a fantastic place to linger, with a view of the river, Wingfield park, and the courtyard-formerly-known-as-the Christmas-Tree-Plaza.
I always seem to have the Mexican Mocha because it is just SO yummy, but I have subtracted one star for their poor selection of baked goods.
This is Reno's hippest, hipsterest coffee shop. The little location it is in is cool - near the river in the "Arts District". I tried to order the pumpkin latte, and they diverted me tot he pumpkin chai which was a lot like pumpkin pie. I liked it, but was sort of sick of the sweetness about halfway through. Baristas were helpful and nice.
Fun spot, very bohemian/artist crowd. Music, official and unofficial, indoors and out. Lots of ambient energy! Vanilla chai was fantastic. I can see why it's a hangout, though probably not a comfortable choice for socially conservative folks.
This was my second home. It sits right on the river, so after swimming, kayaking or intertubing, You can slip in and grab a spiffy sammich and a cup of Joe. I recommend the "Mexican Mocha," it rules just like the staff. If you are more in a spirited mood you can walk just across the hall into the wine bar. It has suave personality and good wine as well.
Environment does not lack crowd watching. I remember a regular crazy kook that had tattoos of flames on his eyelids and a car rim on chains strung around his neck like a shield. mmm good times.
It did lose one star for letting Eric "Emo" take over the mike for poetry night and botching everything that was worth going.
Also watch out for the "LongJohnson" (officer Long and officer Johnson) bicycle police that watch the area. They are real dicks
Free Wireless, good coffee, next to the park, and right on the river. Unless the river floods, great place to network, flirt, and spend the afternoon.
On the third Saturday of the month, the Wine Walk goes right in front of Java Jungle, so get a seat early. With only 252 wireless connections, sometimes you can't get a signal.
Java Jungle is open early and a great place to meet that "blind date."
I have always liked Java Jungle's location: right downtown, near the movie theater if you are early for a movie or you want a quick jolt afterwards, and it is near the river if you want to go for a stroll. I ordered the Mexican coffee, which I always do. It is so hard to branch out when you find something so great and you can't find it anywhere else. Here are the bad things: the parking sucks, and they don't validate for the parking garage, I found a SWEET parking spot right in front, but the bike police are always out in full force, handing out tickets like candy to small children.
The coffee drinks here definitely get five stars, as does the staff. Those poor kids put up with more crap than anyone should have to deal with in their entire lives. My best friend Skott worked here for several years. He's a very cute boy and has one of those sparkly personalities that draws people to him. He didn't get paid much, but he loved coffee and loved being social and meeting new people. In the course of his last year there he had knives pulled on him twice, had some crazy bitch come behind the counter and try and taze him (because she got kicked out of the wine bar next door for not being 21) and had his jar of tips stolen on both Thanksgiving AND Christmas Eve. The final straw from him was when, just two days after some guy had peed in the hallway because he was drunk, some cracked out woman tried to pee on HIM. So, he quit and went off to become a chef at Ciao Italiano, where no one flings any bodily fluids in his general direction. I guess my point is, if you're buying a coffee at Java Jungle, tip those poor kids that work behind the counter. They make $8 an hour and people try to pee on them for no reason.
Okay, onto the coffee. I am personally a big fan of the Flatliner. Chai, espresso, coffee... all mixed together into one amazing cup of liquid methamphetamine. The Mexican Mocha, as stated previously, is awesome. One of the best things about this place though is that the employees are all really into the whole art of coffee mixology. There's always some wacky special on the board, or you can just tell the barista that you want something good and to just surprise you, and they always come through. So, yeah, highly recommended. And be nice to those poor mistreated coffee slingers. Colorful crazies are all edgy and fun when you're just stopping in for a coffee, but they're hell when they constantly hang out at your place of business.
Cute decor, bookshelves with random books to pass time with. The hot chocolate sucked, but they do serve other coffee drinks which might be good (I don't drink coffee, so I couldn't say if they are actually good or not). Also have the usual pastries/bagels/donut selection, but not a very large selection. Good prices, service was just ok. Not many tables, but they're pretty spaced out which is nice - I hate sitting super close to other people in restaurants, and bumping them when I'm walking down the aisles. Pretty busy morning crowd, but everyone seemed to buy and bounce.
Location. Location. Location. If I am looking for coffee while in the river walk area this place beats out dreamers by a long shot. The coffee is okay, the espresso shot could use some adjustment, but all in all not a terrible cup of joe. Service is consistently nice and friendly and for once I got plenty of cream cheese with my bagel without even asking!
every town has the de facto freak coffee house and java jungle is that place in reno.homeless folks, youth of all persuasions of hipness, musicians, crazies.i cant say i come here for the coffee (pretty average) or the service (varies from day to day) but simply because this place is never uptight and i always feel i belong here.i guess that makes me one of the crazies.nice outdoor patio, near the river, often musicians playing outside, its a guilty pleasure and a good http://hangout.free wifi and plenty of inappropriate music.
