Think Central Perk from Friends;
Now imagine it was tucked away on a residential part of Upper East Side, was tinier, and had a couple of sun tanning chairs resting in its front door...
so what's similar? The vibe!
Start with cool decor and unconventional mixed furniture occupied by neighborhood regulars, add two scoops of friendly staff familiar with most patrons, and finish with some good (but not great!) coffee. You can then sit back, and chat with friends completely relaxed without any intimidation of emptying your seats.
Bonus perk: they sell their coffee in bulk and it's often on special!
I agree with the review below me, think Central Perk from Friends...
Except way tinier & with terrible coffee. I go to Hunter so I'm always looking for coffee shops other then cookie cutter Starbucks. So, my cousin & I decided to stop by Java Girl. It looks like a little hole in the wall with gems inside.
Starting out with the positives, cute little place in an unexpected area; mixed matched decor. I didn't try their food because it looks really "bland" but I tried their chocolate covered items by the register. I had a 1/4 pound ($3.75) mix of chocolate covered cherries/blueberries/pistachios & they were great! Def. a must have.
Now the bad, the workers looked bored and as if they didn't want to be there. I ordered a Cafe Au Lait & I've definitely had better. There was too much foam on top for something that's half steamed and the coffee tasted a little watered down & burnt. My cousin ordered a Chai Latte & it tasted like a watered down apple cinnamon drink. She didn't finish it which I don't blame her for.
If I passed by again I would stop by for some chocolate covered goodies but nothing I would go out of the way for.
I had high expectations for Java Girl when it opened many years ago. And was disappointed from the start. There selection of what they would call fresh brewed coffee is limited to 2 or so pots on burners. I am not a big fan of foofy flavored coffee of which one of the two usually is.
People seem to love this place ..."it's so cute"..."oh look at the Central American decor"...as they are snuggled up to their little ity bitty cutesy table drinking what they think is really good coffee. Well the coffee is OK and the service is sub par. I get a sense the Java Girl staff think they are better then they really are.
Bottom line on Java Girl is it's overrated and overpriced.
This place is adorable!! There isn't much seating, which is the downside for me because I don't live close enough to pop over and see if there's a free spot, but I thought this place had really cute decor, tasty coffee, and a scrumptious coffee aroma that was just what I needed on a cold, rainy day. There need to be more places like this on the UES.
Yelp lead me to this cafe. My friend and I were looking for a place to drink coffee and converse before attending a nearby art show. After reading the mixed reviews on yelp, I was pleasantly surprised by Java Girl. I thought the coffee was good, the decor adorable and the atmosphere quite welcoming. I found the service to be good and the music playing was great. It brought me back to the 90's! My friend and I ended up staying longer than intended and we both agree that Java Girl has a lot to offer.
GREAT coffee, terrible service. Food is average but pricey. The coffee though, is great. Especially the french mexican brew - outstanding!
This is a great place to get coffee. The atmosphere, as well as the coffee, is warm and inviting. Not necessarily a place to sit and study if you require absolute silence, but a soothing environment in which to sit back and enjoy a delicious cup of coffee, cappuccino or tea nonetheless. Very enjoyable and laid-back, without that typical nauseating hipster vibe to it. A definite must! Plus, their coffee is EXCELLENT!
I stumbled upon this place on my way to LPQ. I poked my head in, thought it looked cute and decided to stay.
I ordered the cafe creme fresco (espresso blended with milk and ice). It has just the right amount of espresso taste and despite requesting mine be made with lowfat milk, it still tasted creamy.
The cafe itself also has a very homey, neighborhood friendly vibe.
I'm officially a fan :)
This place is absolutely adorable. Mismatched antique chairs, old wooden tables and beautiful Mexican paper laterns make the atmosphere really cozy and original. The coffee was great and they have a huge selection of loose-leaf teas. The food also looked great... but we didn't try it. Outside lawn chairs, wooden benches, a bird feeder and a lounging black cat gave the place a really homey feel and created a sense that your in a quiet lazy neighborhood. Perfect for a Saturday morning. I had read a lot of bad reviews about this place on Yelp and was totally bummed because it is so close to my apt and adorable from the outside. Thankfully I ignored the hype and tried it anyways. It is definitely my new favorite coffee shop in the City.
The atmosphere here is really, really nice. In the summer they open the front doors and there's a nice breeze that comes through. There are benches in front. Their hours are great - they open at 6:30AM. Haven't had the service problems that others mentioned - the staff have always been friendly.
On the other hand, there's no wi-fi, and no power outlets that I could see. So it's not always conducive to doing work. Still a nice place though, and worth checking out.
Excellent coffee! I regret not buying beans when I stopped by this morning before returning to Chicago. Tasty baked goods. Very efficient and kind staff.
LOVE java girl. FANTASTIC coffee selection, lots of teas to choose from, one of the best oatmeal raisin cookies i've ever had, incredibly friendly staff and a great vibe, including lots of neighborhood regulars. This is exactly what you want a New York coffee shop to feel like. They even have a nice row of comfy 'patio furniture' chairs outside to add to the-- come hang out with us whenever you want-- vibe. LOVE IT!
This place is the epitome of a cute little coffee shop. It is very tiny, and often there is no room to sit down, but it's a wonderful place to study or take a break if you get a seat. The decor couldn't be more adorable and the people that work here are very courteous. If you're into flavored coffee, this is the place for you- they rotate their different flavored coffees daily, and most are very good. Overall, great little coffee place.
I found myself rather disappointed with this coffee/sandwich shop. First of all, it attempts to evoke a relaxed, homey feeling what with the random chairs and pillows and magazines, but instead gives off a messy and unkempt vibe. The people behind the counter are a bit odd too; I did not order a drink with my sandwich and the cashier kept on asking me if I was sure...of course I'm sure. I don't know..it's a minor detail but it annoyed the hell out of me. Secondly, after my friend and I ordered, it took forever for the sandwiches to come. One was a pressed sandwich, but there are plenty of other establishments who can do it in a quarter of the time, and the place wasn't even crowded.
No matter. My sandwich with swiss and a bunch of vegetables and balsamic dressing on wheat bread was good though boring at times. My friend's turkey, mozarella, and pesto sandwich, girlled, was much better.
The bathroom is another curiosity. The door, despite the presence of a hook, does not close all the way, leaving a large crack open for all customers to watch one piss. Furthermore, there is a huge wooden box of sorts hovering over the sink, making it next to impossible for one to reach their hands under, turn on the sink, and wash his hands with the soap coming from the empty sauce bottle up top.
Again, far too messy and unfocused.
First, the coffee there is great. My friend got an iced coffee, and I stole it and had to drink half of it. But that is where my great impression ends.
The girl behind the counter (maybe the owner) is a little too pleased with working at the restaurant. When you ask her opinion of the food, her answer is, "It's all good". No other help.
Second, I had the hot egg sandwich, which was good, but it was literally 2 slices of wheat bread, plain sliced eggs, and a piece of cheese. For $7. I liked it, but $7?? No pickle, no chips, $7. A little much.
Last, the restaurant itself is very cute but it's cluttered and I can see how it would get claustrophobic in about 3 minutes. And the bathroom? Please. It is so small, it is almost comedic. You have to reach UNDER a big brown box to wash your hands. Scary. However, the coffee is enough to make me go back, but probably not for food.
This looked like a cute, funky little coffee shop, an we made the mistake of going for breakfast, not wanting to fall back on Starbucks. Bad move.
- their coffee is prepared diner-style and left on burners for customers to pour themselves. Naturally, it tastes burned and gross, like bad diner coffee, or old Dunkin' Donuts brew.
- the "fresh-squeezed" juice was not fresh; in fact it had turned, and tasted like turpentine. I alerted the owner, who shrugged and gave me a bottled juice.
- the muffins, while served from a case as though made on the premises, were obviously bought at a grocery-store, or maybe Dunkin Donuts.
- the servers were none too friendly, but given the bad food, I can understand the low morale.
Yes, the decor is adorable. No, it is not a great coffee place.
I love this place. It's my neighborhood java spot. The coffee is good. Nothing special......but anything is better than starbucks! I have never eaten there so I can't speak on that. What I know is that there fresh ground coffee selection is awesome. You can take whole beans or have it ground for you. So if your in the neighboorhood and looking for coffee go on in. If it's a nice day and your lucky you might get to lounge outside.
My neighborhood coffee shop. Love the location, love that it's not Starbucks, love the friendly service. Cute setting, limited seating, dog friendly. The unfortunate thing is the coffee is nothing spectacular. The vanilla iced lattes are great, but the typical $5 price tag. You would think for the number of times I frequent I would get a discount.
Yeah it's a little messy looking but I have always found that to be part of the charm of this tiny little spot. I stop here often for coffee to go, and it's strong and tasty every time. The pastries look brought-in but I've tried a couple of things and have never disappointed. Not a great place to sit down and relax (there are only like 2 tables, which are nearly on top of each other) but it's a coffee shop after all, and if it's coffee you're after, this place delivers!
I really want to like this place. I've been trying to break my bad habit of Starbucks but this place isn't helping me out. The space is really small and uncomfortable unless it's empty. The people working there are also not the friendliest people.
