4 reviews for Jasmine Asian cuisine
I was meeting my girlfriend for dinner one day, and wanted to go somewhere different than our usual spots of Wasabi or anything Mexican. She suggested a little family owned Asian restaurant in her neck of the woods, so I made the trek down to Jasmine. It's a very cute little place that uses fresh ingredients, some of which they grow themselves. They do not use any additives or preservatives in their cooking. Their entrees are inspired by the cuisine of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, and East India.
The little old Asian lady who runs the joint seated and served us. My only complaint was that she had difficulty speaking and understanding English (although she got the important one right: no onions), and was definitely not in a hurry. She took her sweet time refilling our drinks, but the food did come out quick and hot every time.
We started with soup and I ordered the Egg Drop, which was good...but not the best Egg Drop Soup I've had. My friend chose the Hot and Sour, which was amazing. We split an appetizer of Chicken Spring Rolls. It was very delicious with fresh, crisp veggies and a yummy Thai peanut dipping sauce. We then split an entre of Bonfire Chicken. It was amazinginly good: lightly panki breaded chicken with veggies in a sweet chili sauce. It was slightly sweet with a bit of a kick, and not greasy or oily at all. My favorite part of the dish was some type of eggplant mixed in....maybe Japanese eggplant? I chose fried rice to go with it and my friend opted for brown. Again, mine was okay but not great. The brown rice was by far the better choice. It was very different than any other brown rice I have had before. Purplish in color, and so fluffy and light.
Having been there many times before, my friend definitely knew what to order. If you plan on dining at Jasmine, take a tip from the expert and order the Hot and Sour Soup and brown rice. She also very highly recommends the Sesame Chicken (and even got an order of it to go for her husband, who was very jelouse that we had dined there....with brown rice of course.)
Though the place is super clean, is pretty cute decor-wise, and the couple who own/run the restaurant are as nice as can be, the food is a solid 3 imo.
We ordered an Egg Roll appetizer ($3.75 for 3). They were ok - very generic and unexceptional. Next, we both decided on the "Bonfire" with chicken ($10.95) and brown rice (an extra $1.50 per person). Tbh there was nothing fire-y about it. I am a complete wimp when it comes to spice/heat, and I thought it just tasted like regular sweet and sour chicken with a few other vegetables tossed in with the super sweet sticky sauce (and damn, it was SWEET). The veggies included eggplant which I HATE. I wish this had been mentioned in the menu description because I would have asked for more onion or whatever instead. Oh well, never mind. The chicken, however, was delicious - the owner/server lady told us they batter the chicken with egg whites and no flour, which makes it so crispy. A few pieces were quite chewy but, for the most part, it was bordering on 4 stars. He liked the brown/oddly purple rice more than I did, but then I'm not much of a rice person.
I wouldn't mind going back for lunch maybe, but dinner here tonight was $35 (inc tip and tax) for some very very average food.
Quaint little Chinese restaurant ran by mom and pop. They are very friendly and care about your opinion. Walking in to this place felt like walking into grandma's, especially with the oldies tunes in the background. My lunch order took all of three minutes to be ready. Chicken and Broccoli with Brown rice.
Brown rice appeared to be multigrain, fluffy and unsticky like so many other rices you get from the typical Chinese joint down the street. The egg roll was crisp, flaky, and didn't taste of grease..yet it was very minuscule on filling. Broccoli florets were not bite size, the dish had a nice flavor but was it soaking in butter or oil? The Chickie was in large unchewy pieces. If I can get them to go light on the glop, I'll return.
Light on the wallet lunch fair from 11am - 3pm.
If you love noodle soups, this is the place to go. The Vietnamese Beef Spicy Noodle Soup is to die for. I order it all of the time. They always use fresh ingredients! Another excellent choice is the Tom Yum Kum hot soup. Simply delicious, and filling! Vietnamese egg-rolls are pretty good too and the fried calamari is tender.
