They have palty hair dye here!! That stuff is really hard to find. They sell it in the convenience store downstairs.

The food is decently priced... Very clean place. I love it! Lots of good food to choose from.

People make fun of my hair, even here on Yelp.  I stock up on my $10 Gatsby Japanese Styling Wax at JAS Mart lookin like a Gotti Boy.  Asian guys w/ hair need to use hair products daily because if we didn't, we look like Bert and Ernie, FLUFFY.

Not only do I get my styling wax at JAS Mart, but I also pick up my favorite pre-made sammich there aka no crust, diagonal cut, Tonkatsu sandwich on white toast. Recognize!

"Mav, you wanna know who the best is?  That's him, ICEMAN, that's the way he flies, ice cold, no mistakes, just wears you down, you get bored, frustrated, do something stupid, and he's got you".

oh jas mart!  if only you had a larger selection and didn't sell out of everything!!

great for staples (short grain rice, curry blocks, furikake, and a disproportionately large selection of natto--what, do all enterprising japanese people come from tohoku?!) but the snack selection was surprisingly disappointing.  where is the meltykiss?  and country  ma'am?!

all in all, an okay place in a pinch.  not great if you're looking for comfort.

This place is severaly over priced, the selection is poor, and the items are sometimes too old to be consumed by humans.  For example a pack of natto sells at JAS Mart for $1.39 while the exact same item sells for 99 cents at Sunrise Mart on the same block.

Also, none of the employees at this JAS Mart is Japanese, and they don't seem very happy working there.  The mostly-Japanese employees at Sunrise Mart, by contrast, are typically pleasant and efficient.

Not surprisingly, most of the customers there are Americans and non-Japanese Asians--while the Japanese, on the other hand, clearly prefer the Sunrise Mart, right in the neighborhood.

I am giving 4 stars to the market downstairs.
They have groceries, meat, fish, udon, ramen, tofu, sweets, snacks and a lot of Asian products.
I like the Japanese beauty section: I love Shiseido, Kanebo and Mod's. Check for their beauty products sets specials. Reasonable prices and nice products.
Don't worry if you are not familiar with Japanese language. Everything is translated on tags fixed on the product.
Next time I stop by I am planning to eat some of the yummy looking desserts that they have on their first floor. I hope it is just good as it looks.

BEST strawberry shortcake. I typically do not like sponge cakes but this place is to die for. Fluffy sponge cake and fresh whipped cream with huge strawberries makes this dessert a heavenly treat for the gods!

$4/pc Strawberry quartet - strawberry shortcake with filo dough & chocolate layers in btwn
$4/pc Mont blan (chestnut)
$4.20/pc Strawberry shortcake
$4/pc Green Tea cake

~$28-30 for the whole cake

I absolutely love this place. It's really spacious on the upper level, and stocked up with everything Japanese on the lower. It's a supermarket/bakery/fast food joint (and the fast food is not greasy). I love their curry and the cream puffs. Also, you can get a lot of great stuff at the market downstairs.

If I need something from Japan, JAS Mart  is always my first choice. It reminds me the convenience store in Taiwan. It's bright and clean. I can find anything I want here. I come here to shop the food,  beverage, cosmetics, facial wash, hair dye................
almost EVERYTHING!!!

Now I don't need JAS Mart but I still miss it.

where I get my udon, pocky sticks, and super cheap tofu (like, a dollar I think).

the curry is also decent, though sometimes too sweet. the pasta isn't anything to write home about. nice specials each day.

as for the sweets, I've only tried their cream puffs, and beard papas has nothing to worry about.

not a bad place to sit, listen to some japanese pop, and read.

JAS mart is a cute little Japanese outpost that usually serves as both a grocery store and dessert/snack shop. They have really yummy looking desserts that look mouth-watering. It's more cafeteria than cafe but, worth a stop for some groceries or coffee and lite snack.

Though I do think that the store underground is amazing. I recommend not to try the Strawberry Quartet.

It was... disgusting. I wanted to try the Milk Crepe, however the last piece was taken by the person infront of me. I have yet to try the other dishes. I'll post again after I tried it but so far, STAY AWAY FROM THAT CAKE.

A conveniently located underground Japanese market where I do most of my Asian food shopping. The selection here isn't super varied, but they have the essentials, and they're open pretty late. There's a lot in here that's pretty competitively priced (you'd think they'd mark things up more); and they carry nice lines of beauty products.

In the cityside
Oniguiris, and mentaiko around my left and in the chill
I had no illusions
That Id ever find these treats far from the East and with my eyes
Look what have you done to me, now its history I see
Now I'll spend it all in you again
I'll get mochi while I can
Cause I'm going to my JAS tonight, its easy to feel back in japan

And I'm back in japan, tonight
Back in the JAS, kampai, like in japan where the food is just so good
Down in St. Marks, alright, there's Asahi by that side
All is easy when you stroll through the JAS, feels like back in japan

Sake for my naked sins
Plums, Calpico, and strange dessert libation rarities
Shall I buy this drink in blue
Or shall I go and get my small yogurt forever my fixed pick
Look what have you done to me, now its history I see
I'll get mochi while I can
Cause I'm going to my JAS tonight, its easy to feel back in japan

Another great Japanese grocery store in the East Village. JAS Mart doesn't have as much stock as Sunrise Mart but it is there if you need something quick. They have a better selection of Japanese drinks in the cold section in the back of the store, so sometimes if I'm just craving Gogo no kocha, I come here to pick it up.

They are also only getting 4 stars because out of all the items they import from Japan, they don't bring in the carton drinks that are popular in Japan. :(

I got dragged....i mean I was escorted here by Audrey the other night. I had always seen this place but never bothered to go in. When we got there they were already closing up so I did not get to sample the coffee shop upstairs, but it looks quite good.

Downstairs was the Asian market, and what a market it is. Reminded me of Mitsuwa in Edgewater, that big and ginormous Asian market out there. Only this, of course, was much smaller in scale. But they had the requisite Japanese magazines, the requisite Japanese cookware, and of course my favorite, a box of Pocky. YES new york, they have it here! Thats why it automatically gets four stars outta me. I'll be back to check out the coffee shop upstairs soon.

I'm a writer, and sometimes when I am just sick of writing in coffeehouses, I'll go here because they don't care if you're there for 4 hours on your laptop or notebook.

I don't like the cold bento boxes, and the rolls are old, and I'm sure I can get pastries that are better at a million other places in NY, and the coffee is sometimes burnt and their tea comes in small cups, so...why????

I just love watching Japanese TV commercials. I used to speak and read Japanese, so for someone with the comprehension level of a preschooler, the wacky TV shows and commercials with overly white surgically open eyed Japanese girls giving the thumbs up saying, "Oishee!!!" makes me so happy.

Sometimes I look up at the screen in the middle of writing and I can read some of the lettering, or maybe someone will get a pie in the face, but it's all good. It reminds me that there is a big world outside of NY and life isn't so tiny on our little island.

The upside of this place is that they have a good selection of bag tea, like my favorite...genmai cha! And ok, so the desserts are pretty good, not fantastic, but better than that same Barnes and Noble cookie or scone I was going to have at Starbucks.

I read the Yelp reviews and instead of going to M2M or Sunrise Mart tonight for the squid peanuts called "Kasugai Peanut and You" with a dancing pink squid on the bag, I went here.  Being from New Jersey and having had lifetime (mostly) exposure to places like Han Ah Reum, Mitsuwa, etc., I a) love to shop at Asian markets, and b) I love the values you can find.  One adjustment to living in the city that a suburban girl needs to make regarding grocery shopping is that for the most part, there is far less room to work with, making shopping a more limited experience, both in inventory and overall ambience.  The criteria for a good grocery store get leaner and meaner, and I have had to jettison some bells and whistle for form and function.

I happened upon M2M and Sunrise Mart prior to my Yelpdom, so I was anxious to see what Jas Mart was all about and I was disappointed.  I thought the place, at about 10 on a Monday night, looked depleted, and was far tinier than I expected.   There were virtually no vegtables other than daikon and bok choy.  I didn't love the snack selection and the inventory of things like dried squid , Pocky and wasabi peanuts was shockingly low.  I know that some markets skew more "Korean", some more Japanese, etc., but even so, I was underwhelmed by the overall selection and experience.

On the plus side, they had the best prices I have ever seen anywhere on Shirataki noodles, which Peter eats in lieu of pasta (we try to minimize his carbs...for diabetic folks who really watch what they eat).  Tofu prices were very reasonable and far more in line with what you'd pay in Jersey City or Fort Lee.  Also ,the salepeople were extremely nice and friendly.  I like the mochi green tea ice cream bonbons, but they half melted by the time we got home.

If you need some staple items, and you don't care what brand, and if you like to live on the edge by buying something that is completely unidentifiable and seeing what happens when you open it, this is a great place, as would be any Korean or Japanese market.  They tend to have specials on things you can usually find a use for if you're creative.  It's also just a fun way to spend a half hour.

Didn't get to sample anything at the bakery upstairs because Peter was having a hell of a time keeping our dog Josie from eating a skateboarder while he waited for me.

Tucked in the basement of a bakery shop on St. Marks, this place offers a range of Japanese groceries from your fresh vegetables to frozen meat to snacks and dried food & spices. The space is small, so the selection is not that great. I would say they tend to have more meat & vegetable stuff. But this place has my favorite instant royal milk tea that I didn't find at any other Japanese markets (not even Mitsuwa!) -- so that alone makes this place unique & worthy. Otherwise, I'd say they could make more use of their space and sell more stuff!

Jas Mart is a small Japanese grocery store on St. Marks. It's really small, only three or four short aisles. I will go there to buy some instant miso soup and snacks sometime. They don't have a wide range of selections though, unfortunately. And they run out of things very easiily. For example, 50 sheets seaweed packs run out two times out of three when I shop there. They have okay selections of snacks, but other than that, not so much variety. I will certainly recommend you to check out M2M on 3rd and 11th. They have a lot more selections on snacks, drinks, sauces, noodles, and everything else (also slightly cheaper). And the things they sell in M2M also aren't limited to Japanese products.

downstairs is JAS MART, and the ground level is bakery/deli called Italian tomato. They have spaghetties, curry rice, japanese baked goods, cakes, breads, etc...
You can find mostly anything at JAS MART and its not that expensive. (considering how it has to be sent all the way from Japan.)

I used to come here to eat pasta and chicken cutlet curry and it used to be awesome. But not anymore.
Its not as good as it used to be. The sauce is not good; its sota bland, not rich in taste. The curry is still good, but nothing special.
I feel like the place has changed a bit, and not in a good way
But the desserts look awesome. Theres a large variety of cakes and tirimisui.
Also, I do like the Japanese tv shows they show. Its something to watch even though I have no idea what theyre saying. Better than staring at someone eating their food. And theres also a section for Japanese videos if your willing to checking Japanese shows or movies.
The food is inexpensive and the portions are still good. But dont come here if your mighty hungry or expecting a really delcious meal.

This was my grocery store when I used to live in the E. Village. I used to come here for the Asian stuff--shoyu, tofu, etc. I mostly got the gyoza and discovered cheap ($3.99, I think) MOCHI ICE CREAM that actually tastes good. I usually only ate Bubbie's mochi ice cream ($10 at Dean & Deluca) back at Bubbies in Honolulu, because factory made never tasted right, but the mochi ice cream I found at Jas Mart is AWESOME!

I also usually find good deals on all things Japanese. For example, Naive face soap (one of my favorites) I can get for under $4!!!

BTW, I didn't know that the curry/spaghetti place had a grocery store for the longest time, so you'd miss the entrance to the downstairs unless you knew it was there.

As for the food, the curry is a bit greasy.

FYI--the bakery is NOT Italian, although on the awning outside and on the glass door/walls, it says, "italian tomato" or something engrish-like.

This place is definitely the real deal when it comes to Japanese goods.  Walking in here is like going back to Japan, complete with the weird conbini style baked goods (sweet corn and ham danishes, anyone? How about yakisoba pan?), and pre-made sandwiches (potato salad on white bread, anyone?).  I haven't yet tried their actual menu foods, like the curry or the pasta, but I mean to.  The downstairs grocery is also good, with a selection much like Sunrise Grocery a block away.

I love to come here and eat. Cheap, decent good food. My favorite are the turkey sandwiches and the ume. Then afterwards head downstairs to do a lil shopping. You can find some crazy stuff down there. Some are cheap and some are just way outta the price range for what it is. If you can't seem to find the actually Jas Mart itself and look confused when you step inside the glass doors just look towards your left and you'll see some stairs heading downstairs. Keep a good look out haha.

my friend and I always go here after we eat at MenKuiTei.  It's a ritual we are really into and proud of; eating cheap good food, then going to Jas Mart to check out what's on sale.  We'll go upstairs, buy some cake and check out the circular.  Then, after we've staked out what we want, we go downstairs and spend about an hour figuring out what the random boxes mean, deciding which haircolor would suit us best, and then buying shampoo/other various haircare products so that perhaps one day, we too, can have fabulous hair like the silky raven haired girl on the package.  It's really fun!!

To get to JAS Mart, you have to first walk through an Italian bakery, and down some stairs. Confusing, since Italian baked goods and Japanese groceries don't seem to go together.  There are so many amazing things, though it's hard to say just exactly what all of them are. I dare you to come out without buying something just because you like the package. I found a cake mix that comes with its own hello kitty-shaped mold, that you bake in the microwave. How could I resist?

We had a lot of fun eating and shopping here.  The place kind of reminds me of a minituarized Mitsuwa market because they offer all sorts of japanese snacks, prepared foods, cosmetic/hair products. We ended up buying a cute package of peach body wash which came with a sponge shaped as a delectable peach. Located upstairs is an italian bakery that offers all sorts of beautiful cakes.   The cakes look absolutely perfect and light in texture, definitely try a slice after shopping.

i surprise whoever i bring here. after scarfing down some veggie croquettes and maybe a wheat cake (yum!) i proceed to stare at the delicious green tea cheesecakes and then mysteriously disapear! my friends start shuffling around trying to locate me, and then realize there's a small japanese grocery store downstairs! they all thought it was a storage room or something. haha! i love their specials. always have a cool sale on ramen (Neoguri!!!!) or beauty products. it's fun eye shopping and answering all your non-Asian buddies what everything is. funny, b/c i don't even know what some of the stuff is. i guess. lol. they have great prices for tofu, mochi ice cream (ahhhhh i'm thinking about it right now), frozen croquettes (the curry potato one is delish), and Myojo instant chowmein ramen. (the ones you put mayonaise on it... yup, it's mind numbingly good.)
