    Y U NO OPEN YET?!

Please hurry back to us. I passed by today and it seems they're restocking after renovating. The door was open and everything but it was still closed. What a tease. I love Jas Mart and I really miss the kitchen.

The prices are good and I usually stock up on dango and mochi while I'm in there. Every once in a while, curry goes on sale and I buy a few boxes. I prefer their onigiri over Sunrise, the packaging is nicer. It's more complicated but once you master peeling plastic off seaweed, that onigiri looks absolutely perfect.

    JAS MART IS CLOSED

Sign on the door says the basement is for lease.

This place was my first exposure to Japanese snacks back in the day, I'm sad to see it go. =(
I heard it is being replaced by a 7-11

yay!! So I've recently become obsessed with Sesame balls from Chinatown. I brought them to work on Friday and a woman told me about Mochi ... what a healthy sesame ball sign me up!! So I immediately came to yelp to find a spot that had Mochi.

I stumbled across Jas Mart and saw all the great reviews of this place and had to check it out for myself. I went to Sunrise Market before stopping here and was pleased I kept it movin' to Jas Mart.

Plain ol' Mochi is $1.39 here whereas at Sunrise it was $1.49, I know its only .10 but hey! Gotta cut corners where you can. They have a great selection of sauces and spices. I will definitely be back here soon to get some mochi ice cream for sure! wahoo!

JAS Mart is right on St. Marks but you might well miss it because it is in the basement. IT used to be bigger, occupying the first floor but sadly it had to lease the store front.

There is still a decent selection in the basement, ranging from grocery to personal items. I come here when I crave Japanese snacks and grocery. The price is decent and it is a clean mart.

The selection might not be as great as Sunrise Mart, but DAMN. On one of my Japanese grocery splurges I picked up the best cup noodles a girl could ask for. AUTHENTIC TONKOTSU FLAVOR! Seriously. This was the real deal.

    Please believe it.

After returning from a 3ish week trip from Japan back in '05, I could be spotted here on a weekly basis. It's great for stocking up on bottled teas, zany Japanese snacks and...um...gyoza.

    QUICK TIP!

Did you know that you can microwave gyoza? Being the poor, unfortunate soul that I am (without a working stove), I've had to come up with new and interesting way to prepare my fave snacks! Simply lay your gyoza (I recommend buying the family size package - being single means that this "family size" bag will last you two meals! ::eats sadness::) on a microwave safe plate, cover with damp paper towels, and nuke as necessary.

    BOOM!

Tiny little place, right next to Crif Dogs. If you ever are craving J-Pop, japanese anime, asian snacks, or if you're me, Ramune, then walk over her. This place is bomb. You have to be on the lookout tho, this place is a basement, so it might be a little confusing to find it. There's a store front that looks closed, but on the left, there's a door leading to stairs.
The selection is amazing. Service is decent, basically a normal shop. They have ramune in good ol' japanese aluminum bottle form.

My great friend, who happens to be very cosmopolitan and we both take the city in our hands when we're together, has taken me to this place and I felt so magical.

You don't understand - My very first pop kiss was to a Japanese boy back in Elementary school in Rio De Janeiro. His mother used to bring so many goodies here back from Tokyo for me . And, they made my childhood.

Approximately 17 years after all that, we were strolling down St. Marks and my friend leads me to this weird, mysterious stair case that I'm not too fond of, but then, my eyes get all starry...I've encountered a treasure chest.

I had only bought some mochi and those chocolate candies in a tiny box...But, as the cashier was ringing us up, I almost jumped the counter to hug him...I was a happy woman...Nothing comes in between me and my past. I proudly do anything to go back at that time and I do consume a lot of things that I did back then.

The market might not be big, it is in a basement and it could look better. But, there is a good amount of mochi selection, candies, dry goods,  Ramune, drinks, etc. It is worth a visit.

As far as little Japanese markets is concerned, this one is not bad. It's not incredible, but it has many things you would need. I think Sunrise is better though.

Jas Mart is a deceptively large Asian convenience store, with a spacious basement in addition to the main level.  I've only been once and prefer both Sunrise and M2M for my Asian cravings.  This might be because I ended up stuck in line behind a woman who seemed to be furnishing a house with Asian wares, and because the cashier thought it best to let me know I could pay for my downstairs purchases upstairs after I'd been standing and glaring for several minutes.  Granted - I should have known better, and I probably should have gone upstairs at that point rather than stubbornly waiting it out.

Okay, so that's totally unfair.  That said, Jas Mart also has less to offer in the way of grocery items than its competition.  It has plenty of cute little snacks and a lot of beauty products, but it doesn't provide as much stuff that would look good in my refrigerator or pantry.  There is a good selection of Asian shampoos and the like, and this is what I purchased whilst standing impatiently in my one-person line.  Still, other Asian markets also offer shampoo, with higher ratios of useful to whimsical products.

If I can't make the trek to Edgewater, then I come here.  It is small, but has the essentials. You have to go down a flight of stairs.  So, if you have trouble walking, this isn't the place to visit.  There used to be an eating area and bakery on the first floor, but now it's just the market downstairs.

ok...even though this place does not carry a large selection of things as Sunrise Mart..but somehow i like it here....they have more beauty products and junk food than Sunrise and M2M...so i like it...and plus im really not interested in buying fruits and vegetables...so this is a great place to hit for snacks and beauty products....

One thing i dont like about this place is the stairs..its kind of dangerous to walk down...and i think if they renovate it a little...they should be able to bring in more business.....because more space = more product....lol....

An extra star for the Tokunaga Hideaki album they were playing the entire time I was there. Lol. (Psst. For you Filipinos, he sings the original Japanese version of "Kailanman." http://www.youtube.com...)

I'm a writer, and sometimes when I am just sick of writing in coffeehouses, I'll go here because they don't care if you're there for 4 hours on your laptop or notebook.

I don't like the cold bento boxes, and the rolls are old, and I'm sure I can get pastries that are better at a million other places in NY, and the coffee is sometimes burnt and their tea comes in small cups, so...why????

I just love watching Japanese TV commercials. I used to speak and read Japanese, so for someone with the comprehension level of a preschooler, the wacky TV shows and commercials with overly white surgically open eyed Japanese girls giving the thumbs up saying, "Oishee!!!" makes me so happy.

Sometimes I look up at the screen in the middle of writing and I can read some of the lettering, or maybe someone will get a pie in the face, but it's all good. It reminds me that there is a big world outside of NY and life isn't so tiny on our little island.

The upside of this place is that they have a good selection of bag tea, like my favorite...genmai cha! And ok, so the desserts are pretty good, not fantastic, but better than that same Barnes and Noble cookie or scone I was going to have at Starbucks.

People make fun of my hair, even here on Yelp.  I stock up on my $10 Gatsby Japanese Styling Wax at JAS Mart lookin like a Gotti Boy.  Asian guys w/ hair need to use hair products daily because if we didn't, we look like Bert and Ernie, FLUFFY.

Not only do I get my styling wax at JAS Mart, but I also pick up my favorite pre-made sammich there aka no crust, diagonal cut, Tonkatsu sandwich on white toast. Recognize!

Another great Japanese grocery store in the East Village. JAS Mart doesn't have as much stock as Sunrise Mart but it is there if you need something quick. They have a better selection of Japanese drinks in the cold section in the back of the store, so sometimes if I'm just craving Gogo no kocha, I come here to pick it up.

They are also only getting 4 stars because out of all the items they import from Japan, they don't bring in the carton drinks that are popular in Japan. :(

I got dragged....i mean I was escorted here by Audrey the other night. I had always seen this place but never bothered to go in. When we got there they were already closing up so I did not get to sample the coffee shop upstairs, but it looks quite good.

Downstairs was the Asian market, and what a market it is. Reminded me of Mitsuwa in Edgewater, that big and ginormous Asian market out there. Only this, of course, was much smaller in scale. But they had the requisite Japanese magazines, the requisite Japanese cookware, and of course my favorite, a box of Pocky. YES new york, they have it here! Thats why it automatically gets four stars outta me. I'll be back to check out the coffee shop upstairs soon.

It's a sad, sad day for mankind. I recently tried to buy a strawberry shortcake for my mom's bday but to no avail. THEY STOPPED SELLING CAKES ALTOGETHER HERE! WTF? Oh well, at least their supermarket downstairs is still open. Found my Mt. Fuji brand Mochi ice cream here. They had green tea, sesame, and assorted! WHAT? ASSORTED = 2/ea X vanilla, sesame, green tea, strawberry = AWESOME!. Red Bean wasn't that good anyway. Can you believe I saw them selling COOKED RICE here? How lazy can one get? Gives new meaning to 'minute rice'. I also noticed that the cashiers/staff aren't Japanese anymore. That's not a good thing. This can only mean that this chain is spreading themselves thinner and thinner.

I read the Yelp reviews and instead of going to M2M or Sunrise Mart tonight for the squid peanuts called "Kasugai Peanut and You" with a dancing pink squid on the bag, I went here.  Being from New Jersey and having had lifetime (mostly) exposure to places like Han Ah Reum, Mitsuwa, etc., I a) love to shop at Asian markets, and b) I love the values you can find.  One adjustment to living in the city that a suburban girl needs to make regarding grocery shopping is that for the most part, there is far less room to work with, making shopping a more limited experience, both in inventory and overall ambience.  The criteria for a good grocery store get leaner and meaner, and I have had to jettison some bells and whistle for form and function.

I happened upon M2M and Sunrise Mart prior to my Yelpdom, so I was anxious to see what Jas Mart was all about and I was disappointed.  I thought the place, at about 10 on a Monday night, looked depleted, and was far tinier than I expected.   There were virtually no vegtables other than daikon and bok choy.  I didn't love the snack selection and the inventory of things like dried squid , Pocky and wasabi peanuts was shockingly low.  I know that some markets skew more "Korean", some more Japanese, etc., but even so, I was underwhelmed by the overall selection and experience.

On the plus side, they had the best prices I have ever seen anywhere on Shirataki noodles, which Peter eats in lieu of pasta (we try to minimize his carbs...for diabetic folks who really watch what they eat).  Tofu prices were very reasonable and far more in line with what you'd pay in Jersey City or Fort Lee.  Also ,the salepeople were extremely nice and friendly.  I like the mochi green tea ice cream bonbons, but they half melted by the time we got home.

If you need some staple items, and you don't care what brand, and if you like to live on the edge by buying something that is completely unidentifiable and seeing what happens when you open it, this is a great place, as would be any Korean or Japanese market.  They tend to have specials on things you can usually find a use for if you're creative.  It's also just a fun way to spend a half hour.

Didn't get to sample anything at the bakery upstairs because Peter was having a hell of a time keeping our dog Josie from eating a skateboarder while he waited for me.

This was my grocery store when I used to live in the E. Village. I used to come here for the Asian stuff--shoyu, tofu, etc. I mostly got the gyoza and discovered cheap ($3.99, I think) MOCHI ICE CREAM that actually tastes good. I usually only ate Bubbie's mochi ice cream ($10 at Dean & Deluca) back at Bubbies in Honolulu, because factory made never tasted right, but the mochi ice cream I found at Jas Mart is AWESOME!

I also usually find good deals on all things Japanese. For example, Naive face soap (one of my favorites) I can get for under $4!!!

BTW, I didn't know that the curry/spaghetti place had a grocery store for the longest time, so you'd miss the entrance to the downstairs unless you knew it was there.

As for the food, the curry is a bit greasy.

FYI--the bakery is NOT Italian, although on the awning outside and on the glass door/walls, it says, "italian tomato" or something engrish-like.

Don't worry if you are not familiar with Japanese language. Everything is translated on tags fixed on the product.

Green tea ice cream + mochi = Orgasm

We all have those Asian products that give us this reaction (No, not Lucy Lui). This is basically your quick stop for whatever Japanese goods you fancy. Or better yet, for those who are inexperienced and curious, you'll have a great time trying out many things that us Americans are not familiar with.

    Suggestions:
Chocolate covered jelly beans in a tube
Melon bread- Though it has nothing to do with melon.
    Chocolate covered Koalas
    Bottled milk tea
Unsweetened bottle tea- Because it actually takes like tea instead of our high fructose corn syrup beverages.

This place is severaly over priced, the selection is poor, and the items are sometimes too old to be consumed by humans.  For example a pack of natto sells at JAS Mart for $1.39 while the exact same item sells for 99 cents at Sunrise Mart on the same block.

Also, none of the employees at this JAS Mart is Japanese, and they don't seem very happy working there.  The mostly-Japanese employees at Sunrise Mart, by contrast, are typically pleasant and efficient.

Not surprisingly, most of the customers there are Americans and non-Japanese Asians--while the Japanese, on the other hand, clearly prefer the Sunrise Mart, right in the neighborhood.

As I was having dinner at Ramen Setagaya, I was staring at this market thinking that yes... I need food for my 5-hour flight back to CA.  I mosied on in to find that a lot of the fresh foods in the refrigerated section (sounds like a contradiction) were gone already.

    Beef Don: $4.25
    Mentaiko (spicy roe) Onigiri: $1.59
    Cheese Bread: $2.19

Now nothing tastes particularly fantastic.  They're good fillers.  I'm thinking the cheese bread might have been better had I bought it earlier in the day or eaten it sooner (I waited until my flight the next morning).  The beef don was not decent -- some of the beef pieces were really fatty but the sauce was good mixed with the rice.  Onigiris, as usual, have a 3:1 ratio of rice to filling.

    LAYOUT OF THE STORE:
Left hand side: counter with rolls and baskets of different types of sweet and salty breads
Right hand side: rows of candy, cookies, dried fish, and other snacks
Back (refrigerated section): onigiri, dons, sushi, drinks

All in all, a good place to get snacks and small foods to-go.

One of my favorite asian specialty markets to visit when I'm in the area. It's small and the matcha snacks selection isn't very vast, but the cashier is always nice and there's still a lot of things to snack on. They have some things Sunrise Mart doesn't have and vice versa. There's a slight difference in price; Jas Mart is probably a few cents less on some items (like melon pan).

So far this is the ONLY place around that area that carries "Sweet Green Tea" for $4 or $5 (which way better and cost-efficient than Green Tea lattes at Starbucks). I highly recommend it.

Though I do think that the store underground is amazing. I recommend not to try the Strawberry Quartet.

It was... disgusting. I wanted to try the Milk Crepe, however the last piece was taken by the person infront of me. I have yet to try the other dishes. I'll post again after I tried it but so far, STAY AWAY FROM THAT CAKE.
