Traveling on the 75 miles of US Highway 101 between Willits and Garberville you would be hard pressed to find a place to stop and have lunch. That is what brought us here. My wife and I had a late breakfast and by the time we reached Leggett it was almost 2 o'clock and our stomachs were growling. Leggett, known for being the home of the drive-thru tree and the northern terminus of Highway 1 is not exactly a culinary Mecca, and the only two restaurants that we were able to find here was this one and a pizza place.
Upon walking inside you are immediately greeted with the feeling of a 1960's roadside diner: cash only, dark wood paneling, brown vinyl booths, an old broken-down juke box, family photos on the wall, and a kind white-haired waitress with just a bit of a southern twang. One look at the menu prices, however, will quickly bring you back to the present time: Lunch is going to run you at least $10. The prices, in fact, are probably my main gripe about the place. My "shrimp platter" (a decent sized serving of small deep fried frozen shrimp and french fries) cost $10, as did my wife's 1/2 pound bacon cheddar burger. Sodas were $1.75 and while we didn't have a need to find out, the fact that they have both a small and a large size listed on the menu seems to hint at the possibility that refills are not free. To be perfectly honest, this is the type of place that you settle for because there isn't much of anything else nearby and given that they close at 2pm I doubt that this sleepy segment of highway can support much more. The reason that I'm giving them three stars, however, is because of my wife's hamburger. Quite simply, it was one of the best hamburgers that I've ever tasted. The meat was excellent (and I'm pretty sure it was something closer to 3/4 of a pound rather than the 1/2 pound listed on the menu - it's served on a roll-sized bun), and it had just the right amount of bacon and cheese (plus the normal lettuce, tomato, and onion of course). It was really quite an amazing find, well worth an extra star. This place ain't much, but at least it's here.
