I, too, don't understand the rave reviews this place has gotten.  I had brunch reservations, but still waited twenty minutes past the time for said reservation (and was ten minutes early as well).  Our server showed up exactly twice (after a ten minute wait to take our order and to bring our bill).  I had the Country Breakfast and the free "Best Bloody Mary ever".  Bloody Mary was WAY too sour (loads of pickle juice).  The portion of my food was huge.  The grits and scrambled eggs were on the bottom and a piece of ham and a biscuit were on top.  When I moved the ham, I realized it was cold as was the biscuit.  No help in site to remedy the situation.  We never were asked if we wanted anything else or if everything was okay.  What I did end up eating was just passable at best.  A disappointing meal and aloof servers (and hosts) will not be bringing me back.

I am so glad I was able to finally make it here for a meal.

My visiting friend from Dubai and our former boss and her friend all joined me for lunch here last week and they were suitably impressed.

The service was a little off, but I think it was our waitress only because the other ones were pretty on point and helped when she was away. The hostess was very accommodating and the atmosphere was relaxed.

I had the goat cheese sandwich, which was lovely and they allowed me to substitute the salad with the rosemary fries (with lovely crunchy bits of rosemary everywhere).

The other diners had the special tuna burger and the cod and were very happy with their choices. The portions are a little on the big side for lunch, but that just means that I'll have to come back here and try something lighter so I can get the dessert.

Yay Jane!

Food: 4 stars -  everything is relative - as everything else in Soho is ridiculously expensive, a sit-down brunch place in Soho where you can get good tasting food for $12-16 is rather good.

Hygiene: 1.5 star - I saw a small cockroach underneath our table. Was nice enough to tell the waiter quietly (the next table is extremely close to ours), and he said he was surprised and would ask his manager what to do. However, he didn't do or say anything about it after that. There were numerous flies around too - both in the dining room and the bathroom - which is unacceptable for what you might expect if they charge above diner prices.

Hygiene is extremely important to me, so I won't be coming back or recommend it until they fix this issue.

Wow.

A 4-star average after 122 reviews means nearly universal effusive praise. I beg to differ.

Service was fine, not amazing, and we sat in an outdoors table on Houston that was perfectly okay, even great to watch people walk by.

The issue here is the food. BLT with an egg over easy with fries, Item 1. The BLT was served on brioche bread with a lemon aioli. The bread was doughy and puffy; completely wrong for a BLT, as it overwhelmed the bacon, which was done nicely but nothing you can't get at a diner for six bucks. The egg wasn't seasoned, and the fries were left in the fryer for 30 seconds too long - they were too hard and way too seasoned with rosemary.

Item 2 was the goat cheese flatbread with caramelized onions. It lacked oomph, meaning it lacked that one extra, unexpected ingredient that makes you say, "yes, this is special, yes this is right." You could easily get the same thing at an airport restaurant, and worse yet, it almost felt like the cooks were churning out these items without any sort of life or creativity. I'm not interested in having to pay for airport food at a supposedly "good" restaurant in the West Village.

I might give it another chance, but a very disappointing first trip.

I love this place.
It makes me smile.
It makes my belly smile.
I got married downstairs.
I may be a little biased but so you know we had dinner here before getting married here and it was one of the best meals i've ever had. It turned into our "tasting" for the wedding and we tasted just about everything that night :) and let me tell you, everything tasted amazing. So based on that night we booked their room downstairs for our wedding. The place shined on our wedding day, the service, food and ambiance was great.

Things that absolutley need to be tried here:
The Peppercorn steak (my mouth is watering right now thinking about it)
The Salmon and Avacado Tartar (is it lunch time yet)
The Banana Bruelle (droooool)

Thanks Jane,
we will be back soon.

I came here for dinner with a friend following a recommendation from a coworker as we happened to be in the area. Could not have had a better experience. First of all, the interior is absolutely, absolutely beautiful. It is very warm and inviting and obviously clean. The hostess was very accomodating as we were supposed to be 3 yet the third person in our party came an hour and a half later.

We ordered drinks first-- absolutely delicious champagne cocktails and you must try the homemade sodas. The food was likewise delicious. I had the roast organic chicken which was cooked perfectly with mashed potatoes and asparagus. A must-try! We also shared the cookies with milk-- definitely loved by anyone with a sweet tooth.

The service was great and the prices not bad at all (we paid around $80 total). 5 stars!

Benedict Jane - best benedict EVER
French Toast - only second to the brioche french toast at Palmetto in San Francisco.

All in all...one of the best brunches I have ever had.

Bathroom level smells like weird moldy cheese and meat...made me want to vomit the best brunch I ever had.

Everytime I come here, its for Sunday brunch.  The wait time can be annoying (once had to wait outside for ~45 min for a table for 2 despite having reservations; the next week, a table was ready immediately for our party of 6), but I suppose its worth it.  I love the Lobster Benny and the Jane Benedict (eggs benedict on a crabcake).

Hate how unpredictable the wait can be, but still one of my favorite brunch spots.

The quality of the food is the best.  I love the mushroom burger and fries.  The green spinach salad is really healthy and I've never had cream of mushroom soup like I had at Janes.  Even the bread that they serve is delicious.  But what I REALLY came here for, was the dessert-the Choco Chip cookies dipped in whole milk and French bean vanilla ice cream.  The cookies are baked and served fresh out the oven, so the contrast of warm cookies and ice cold milk/ice cream is to die for.  I've been here for brunch as well.  The eggs benedict is terrific, however for the price and for the long wait, there are so many other place located in the east village that are just as good at half the price.

This place is so damn awesome. I went there because I kept hearing about this vanilla bean french toast. All I can say is wooo that stuff is good. I've been more than once and never disappointed, even for dinner once. Service is on point too. Let me tell you what put Jane on the map for me. I was there for brunch once and after about 15 mins the waiter comes out and announces that we will be getting an order of french toast on the house because of the wait. I was shocked, thrilled and thoroughly impressed.

Despite absurdly long wait times on a Sunday, the Vanilla Bean French Toast was one of the best brunch items I've ever eaten. Despite it's gigantic size, it had just enough flavor and fluff to it. The complimentary white peach bellini it came with helped aid my hangover quite nicely.

Brunch is worth the wait.

I had the Johnny's benedict: eggs benedict over maple sausage patty and a layer of sweet cornmeal... yes, delicious. Also tried the famed Creme Brulee French Toast... also, delicious.

With the complimentary stiff beverage, the price is right.

Right around the corner, with decent food.  Another good not great popular restaurant.

I have been to Jane a handful of times, a couple for brunch, one for drinks, and one for a first date (a/k/a dinner).

The brunch is good, all though be forewarned you should make a reservation.  People stand in line outside to get in, they love it that much.  I like it, but I don't love it.  I do like the fact that you get a complimentary cocktail with your brunch and their brunch cocktails are quite tasty, but why tease me with one.  I should be able to drink as much as I want .... not really.  Plus, if you come before noon on Sunday, NYC Blue Laws (are they called that here?) won't allow you to order booze until noon on Sundays...because you should be in church I guess, not boozing it up.  Irregardless, your brunch costs the same if you come in at 11:00 am when they open.

Dinner was good, again not great.  My date knew the chef so we got special treatment, and they brought out tons of excess we had not ordered, including a gratuitous bottle of champagne which really helped make the date go much better, booze does that for me, always!  My favorite of the appetizers they brought out was the gnocchi which was nestled in a cream sauce with Gorgonzola, that was really great actually.  The beet salad was nice as well.  My entree was pretty bad, the scallops.  It was just boring, the flavors didn't mesh well together, and I hardly ate it.  They brought us out a ton of desserts, I remember them being good, but don't remember what they were...not a good sign for me.

The service is always good, the wait staff friendly and helpful.  The bartenders cordial.

This place does a great business, but I don't think it's wonderful.  I will probably come here again, but with fairly low expectations.

I went for dinner with a large group of friends for a birthday. Despite having a reservation we had to wait for close to an hour for our table to be ready, which is kind of annoying considering that's the whole point of making a reservation (am I wrong here?).

We passed the time by sampling some cocktails. The raspberry mojito went down very smoothly. Looked like a ridiculously girly drink in my hand but who cares? Delightful.

Dinner itself took ages to come out. Apparently they decided to wait until we finished our appetizers (but we were taking it easy eating it because they were taking so long - silly misunderstanding). Their soups are very good, and very generous portions at that. I had the roasted organic chicken. Really tasty - all my friends had different things and everybody said it was delicious.

The waitress was very friendly through the lengthy process of getting seated and getting our food. She made this a 5 star experience by giving us free desserts! Not just a piece of cake, but the entire menu. That wins with me.

I'd say it's a nice place to go to impress a date. Good crowd, good food. Awesome eclectic mix of background music.

I'd heard good things so of course, when a friend suggested we go for dinner one night, I jumped with glee at the chance to try.

I wasn't disappointed in the food at all. I started with the wild mushroom soup and it was incredible! It's also much bigger than I thought it would be and was very hearty. For the main course, I ordered the asparagus risotto and my friend had the roasted chicken w/ mashed potatoes. As always, we shared our plates and it was a perfect combination. I like my risotto a tad softer than it was served but that's just me. The chicken was perfectly cooked: the meat was juicy, the skin was crispy, but not oily. Out meal was accompanied by a few glasses of malbec and was topped off with what might be the best Apple Crisp I've ever had.

I'll be going back again soon.

Mixed review here. The toasted ricotta gnocchi are incredible. Really delicious, and rich without being overwhelming.  The artichoke risotto was good, but not amazing, but my companion's mushroom ravioli were great. The wines were a bit pricy, and the desserts (banana brulee and an apple crumble) were good but not outstanding. But for $18+ an entree, everything should be great (at least in my opinion). Loved the gnocchi, but wish everything was at that level.

looked up this place for lunch one day. It happened to be a particularly chilly one (18 degrees w/ wind chill), and the thought of leaving my office made my eyes well up with tears, but i went anyway. It was a bit more fancy than i had thought it would be. I ordered the salmon sandwich but they were out of salmon, so i had a steak sandwich instead. May i say, yum yum yummy. It was large, perfectly cooked, had caramelized onions and it came with fries all for about $8.50. Pretty good price for a quality soho lunch. Got so full i had to be rolled home, but luckily all the meat i had gave me the sweats and kept me warm the rest of the day.

The good: Complimentary cocktail (Raspberry Champagne for me, tasty) or OJ (for my friend) helped bring the price down, and the entrees (Vanilla Bean French Toast and Benedict Johnny) were decent - and about $18/person with tip is pretty good for Soho brunch.
The bad: After seeing a movie at the nearby Angelika, a friend and I came to wait in line at Jane for their famous brunch. Not only was our "30 minute wait" over an hour,  in the end an hour wasn't worth the other hassles.  The bread basket was cold, the restaurant itself was way too packed for a space that big (we were basically sitting on the laps of the people next to us).
The ugly: After my friend complained about the wait, they brought over complimentary banana chocolate chip bread to apologize and almost redeemed themselves...except that most of it wasn't finished baking.

I had a reservation here for Sunday brunch at 3PM (Seriously, doesn't brunch mean BReakfast-lUNCH?  Who eats breakfast OR lunch at 3?  Aish), and wasn't seated until around 3:30PM thanks to my lagging friends.  Since brunch ends at 4, they were out of some items like the Lobster Benny and the corn pancakes for my Benedict Johnny (which were replaced with English muffins).

Oh, yum.  Yum-yum-yum-yum-YUM.

It's not standard country brunch fare (meaning mama's fresh AYEGGS and GREEEITZ) but a spin on the traditional dishes.  And that's a good, sensible, spin.  Not a "let's throw some foie gras onto the scramble...  OOH and bacon-wrapped caviar HOW DIVINE" spin.  More of a "let's sub sausage with prosciutto" or "hmm how about perching poached eggs on some crawfish cakes" spin.

Brunch items range from $12-$17 and each comes with your choice of a drink.  Service was friendly and unpretentious.

Finally made it down to Jane this morning to try the famous brunch.  I figured the weekend before Christmas was a good time to take a chance on a Sunday at 1:30pm, and lo and behold, I was right.  10 min and we were sat in the celebrity table in the corner - clearly someone must have tipped them off that The Mayor was in the house (hey, I can dream, can't I?).  Decor is warm and brown, but with chic touches like square lamps and sleek banquettes - makes you feel at home.  I like it.

The menu is kind of overwhelming, but only in the sense that everything looks amazing.  I went with the Johnny Cakes Benedict (eating light, as always) which was savory and delicious.  Pair that with a side of rosemary fries, and you've got yourself one damn good brunch.  Minus a star for some server mishaps and cramped seating, but it's a safe bet.

Unless you are a masochist, make a reservation.

I like Jane, but still think Penelope is WAY better.  I like my brunch in places with atmosphere.  I didn't feel much of one at Jane.  Just a bunch of tables crammed into a small space with overworked/overstressed waiters bustling about, but never quite servicing my table.

Shrimp ranchero thing is good, but not great.  Bloody Mary is SPICY.  The BF thought it was awesome, I was not a huge fan.  I do like that brunch buys you a complimentary drink, however.  That's a nice touch.  If only the compliments were available when ordering off the lunch menu too...the fries here look good.

Overall, a decent spot but overhyped (of course, what isn't overhyped in this city?).

Sidenote - was today a fluke, or are the patrons here always incredibly frumpy and unattractive?  Seriously, I'm not totally superficial, but I couldn't help notice Jane was hosting the Ugly Convention today.

Nestled in the twilight zone that is Houston Street, Jane proves to be able to hold it's own with a loyal following and great food. It's chic decor and sophisticated staff make Jane classic without the attitude. The wait can set you back 20 to 40 minutes, but the steak frites and flirtini is certainly worth it. Also, Sunday nights around 7:30ish walk in without a wait and enjoy the steak frites (usually $23) for $12. A fantastic spot whether you're NoHo or SoHo.

Went to Jane for the first time this past Sunday night.  I did not know Sunday nights had $12 house specials for the Hanger Steak, Jane Burger, Salmon, and Pork Chop.  My name a Borat, High Five!

I got the Hanger Steak w/ mixed greens and my friend got the Jane Burger w/ fries.  Our entrees were excellent for the price.  We also got the Goat Cheese Flat Bread and the Toasted Ricotta Gnocchi as our appetizers.  The Flat Bread was nice, but the white and creamy Gnocchi was a little too rumbles in the jungle in the stomach after a few pieces.

Inside, Jane is nice, simple, and clean.  However, I think Sunday night $12 Jane Specials is another word for Senior Menu Specials.  Where am I, in the Upper East Side?  No offense, but I think I'll come back to Jane for a weekend brunch with patrons around my age.

I went today with some friends for brunch.  I've been to Jane before and really enjoyed it.  However, today was a downgrade for a few reasons:
- Coffee was cold & had to order a fresh cup
- My cousin's coffee had a 1/4 cup of coffee grounds in the bottom of her cup
- My french toast was not done enough, maybe cut too thick but it was soggy in the middle, not very appetizing

We had been sitting downstairs and maybe that's why things were 'off' but in any case, I'm not sure if I'll be back.  There are too many other options in SoHo.

eh.  not some place i would go out of place to eat at, but it was ok.... the wait was ridiculously long.  There were 4 hostess trying to work the board and of course, they managed to f' up the whole thing.  Most of the people there were out of town-ers (many brought their huge luggage with them to brunch) and were kinda annoying (and i love tourists btw... support new york's economy).  The food was decent, service was good (excluding the snobby hostesses), but I could have done without people standing over my food as the waited for their table.  eh.

I got married here, so obviously it has a special place in my heart. Their Green Room is adorable and was perfect for our completely modest 18 guest wedding. My family loved the food, which says a lot because we're a bunch of gavones!

The banana brulee has a special place on my waisteline.

Everyone raves about their brunch, which I've never been to. However, dinner is delicious (pricey, but it's New York). Whatev!

Don't leave without having the salmon and avocado tartare at least once. And please love yourself enough to save room for the banana brulee!!!!!!!

My aunt sent us pictures of the wedding with a post-it attached to a picture of the banana brulee that said "I NEED MORE OF THIS NOW!"

We're a bunch of freaks.

I had a most enjoyable dinner here with my boyfriend and two other friends. The area is great to walk through, and Jane's warmth is apparent the minute you walk through the front door.

We made a reservation on Open Table and, although we arrived a bit early, were seated right away, Our waitress was lovely and well-spoken, the beaujolais we drank well-priced and brightly tasty, the mushroom soup and beet salad appetizers delish.

On to the main courses: everyone LOVED what they had. The men both got sirloin steaks with potatoes au gratin (to die for), I got the seared ahi on farro with mushrooms and a fig/balsamic reduction (totally cleaned my plate), and my friend got the fish of the day: pan roasted skate atop moroccan something ;-)

We skipped dessert because Magnolia Bakery was beckoning -- not to mention open til 12:30am!

There's always a gazillion reviews for the good places ;)

I got a wobbly table and just as I started to look for the waitress to ask for a napkin to tuck under the leg, a snazzy manager knelt on one knee in front of me--not to propose but to fix the table.

Service was fantastic. On a busy busy Sunday noon-time, the wait was about 35 min but we were out of there in an hour.  Get the salmon burger with avocado. Avoid the chicken sandwich with roasted peppers ('twas a bit plain).

Yum!

1. Service
Be prepared to wait. Wait a long, long time. Last time I was there, we waited 45-50 minutes for a table of two. I think they forgot about us because it wasn't until 5 minutes after we had asked about our reservation, that we got a table. We were only sitting at the bar! However, the waiter was very observant and keen to knowing exactly when to come by and see if we needed anything. Don't you hate when the waiter/ess comes as soon as you've stuffed your mouth with food?

2. Food
But the food more than makes up for it.  Love the flatbread with goat cheese, arugula and caramelized onions. That is a must, everytime. I will eat it until I get sick of it and so far, so good. Gnocci is very good. The organic chicken is good. The scallops were good. Everything was deliciouso. Must go for brunch one of these days...

3. Drinks
Ordered the martini, not too crazy about them but the mojitos are good. Raspberry Mojitos Rule!

Highlight -
Went there for my birthday and had a very good time. Everyone ordered a different dish, all of which were delicious. (will post pictures)

I wanted to like Jane. I thought the service and decor were wonderful. It's just that, um, the food...I wasn't impressed. I didn't care for the highly yelped about Vanilla Bean French Toast: brioche bread, creme brule batter. Too "eggy" for me and, not very flavored or sweet. The "house made chicken sausages" were so boring, I shouldn't have bothered to finish them. What gives?
ODD
I would have maybe given a 4 star, (I really did like the atmosphere, and Michael F. and Snarkmeister seemed very pleased with their meals.) were it not for the stingy drink offerings. One drink with brunch and each additional brunch drink (in small brunch sized glass mind you) was $8.

Sheesh. I don't think so.

Would have been 3 stars if not for the fact that they served me the BEST HANGER STEAK I'VE EVER HAD.

Seriously.  This was a work of art.  Tender, juicy and delicious.

If only the the brunch came with more than one bloody mary...we might have had something beautiful.

Mikey F seemed to like his prosciutto benedict but Victoria didn't seem to like her "eggy" french toast.

All in all, a 3 star brunch wearing a 4 star brunch's clothing.

I came here for a friend's birthday.  We had a fairly large party and a reservation for 9:30.  We were not seated until almost 11...
The why the 4 stars, you say?  Well, I'm about to tell you, my friend.

Jane handled this difficult situation extremely well.  Due to circumstances (possibly) beyond their control (2 large tables of lingerers...) our table was not available when we arrived, or for the next hour and a half.  The hostesses did their best to accommodate us.  We waited at the bar and were treated to free champagne and appetizers.  The manager checked in with us regularly and was extremely apologetic.

Once we were finally seated our server was friendly and accommodating.  The drinks were great, lots of interesting choices.  The food was good as well, though I'd filled up on free appetizers and thus only had a Nicose salad.  Anyway- the point to all this is that we all left feeling satisfied with the experience despite what could have been a disastrous situation.  Well done, Jane... I'll be back!

Very good! I love the location of this place because you're so close to the shops and a nearby F train on Broadway. I went with my friend and I got the salmon burger and she got a plate of ricotta gnocci. It was so delicious- my burger wasn't oily and perfectly cooked. I loved how it came with a huge heaping of rosemary fries (I swapped for it instead of the mixed salad).

Her gnocci was amazing!! It crispy on the outside and has that melt-in-your mouth texture. Creamy and great comfort food. Service was pretty good, but we went during lunch so there weren't too many people. Overall good food, and LOTS of it- so it was a good value!

My bf and I were in NY last weekend and wanted to find a good brunch place. We had no idea where to go so we randomly selected Jane because of all the great reviews we've read about this restaurant. I'd have to say we made a very good choice!

At first we were running late and didn't think we'd make our reservation. We arrived 15 min late and thank goodness we were still able to get a table. Definitely make reservations! The restaurant was jam packed...there were tons of people waiting to be seated. I'm so glad we made reservations or else we probably would've waited at least 45 min.

Now on to the good part...the food. My bf ordered the Lobster Benny (maine lobster, poached eggs, buttermilk biscuits, spinach, hollandaise) and I ordered the Benedict Jane (poached eggs, crab and crawfish cakes, spinach, tarragon hollandaise). Both were delicious! They were both well prepared and the poached eggs were perfect. The biscuits in the Benny were so good...so buttery and flaky...mmm. We also ordered a side of chicken apple sausage. The sausage was ok...not the best I've had. It lacked a bit of flavor so we weren't too impressed w/ it.

The prices range from $14-$17, which is a bit higher than what you would normally pay for brunch food, but it's well worth it. You also get a complimentary cocktail or juice with your meal, which is nice.

The service was great. The waiters/waitresses there are very fast and efficient. We were in and out of there in less than and hour. When we left it was almost 2:30pm and there was still a long line at the door. Crazy.

If you're looking for a good brunch place in NY...I highly recommend Jane! I'm definitely going back the next time I'm in NY.

Went with a good friend of mine on a Wednesday night: low key, satisfying portions, and random but fun music (Feist followed by Nelly Furtado). I suppose this spot is like any other New York eatery, but if you want a place where you're not sitting on the laps of your neighboring diners and where you can actually carry a conversation without yelling, you should stop by for some tasty food, wine, and most of all: THREE HUGE, WARM CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES WITH ICE CREAM DUNKED IN A GLASS OF COLD MILK. They were out of this world, gooey deliciousness.

I went here with a friend out of town, partially because I've always seen the place as I walk to the movie theater, and also because I heard great things about it. But all in all, I just wasn't impressed.

Food: On the better side, but I could still name a slew of restaurants with better food for the dollar. I had the grilled pork chops, and while the cranberry sauce was good, it didn't take away from the ho-hum pork. The vegetables that came wtih it were lackluster as well. The bread basket was good though.

Atmosphere: I think this did the most for me. I remembering leaving the place and telling my friend, "it's trendy, but they won't have to redecorate every three years before it gets tacky." It's the quiet suave.

People: Prompt, but unremarkable other than that.

Well, I can't remember what I had to eat, but I can probably attribute that to the freely flowing wine and booze at our table.

I loved our server (as did my other two dining mates).  He was friendly, useful (in terms of information and the borrowing of his lighter) and energetic.  The comment from earlier regarding the wannabe actors as servers didn't seem to apply to our waiter.

My friends and I had a great time, loved our fried appetizers and drank gobs of alcohol.  The bill, although expensive, was not exhorbitant and did not leave us feeling as if our wallets had been plundered.

I would like to try out their brunch as it seems to be "their thing", but who can make it into Manhattan all the way from Yonkers for a Sunday brunch?!

This morning I hit up Jane for the 4th time (3 being brunch), and at this point I'm willing to say that it's worth the hype.  All of my dishes there have been fantastic, and there seems to be nothing to complain about accept for the wait (which unfortunately is usually 45+ min, given the popularity).  This morning while we were waiting for our dishes to be served, the waiter sent over a plate of french toast 'on the house' as an apology for the delay, which is something I had never ordered myself there and thoroughly enjoyed.  The cheese grits is a great side order, and the Benedict Johnny is a huge improvement on a classic dish (eggs benedict).  The ham is switched out for turkey sausage, and the english muffin is switched out for cornbread pancakes, which makes the dish fantastic.  Also, I was very happy with the orange juice, which is included in the brunch, fresh squeezed, and comes in a normal glass (not a shot glass), which is sometimes not the case at nicer brunch places.
