Let me start by saying that I would return to Jam if only for the pear chai jam!
So anyways, I was throughly impressed with the food and service. It obviously helped that our server was a total hottie (don't tell my boyfriend I said that). He was very attentive and didn't seem to mind that I asked too many questions and took too long to answer when he asked me what kind of bread I wanted (it's a big decision!).
I got one of the tofu scrambles based off of someone else's review that they really know how to do tofu. (I'm too lazy to look up the exact review now.) They were absolutely spot on! I got the pesto scramble that comes with roasted red peppers, mushrooms, and (of course) pesto. Absolutely amazing! I subbed fresh fruit for my hashbrowns (excellent decision btw), and it was very good as well. The globe grapes were enormous and perfectly sweet. The toast was good, but you can't really go wrong with any Dave's Killer Bread choice; even better (spectacular, one might say) with the pear chai jam. Seriously, this stuff is to die for!
The prices were also very reasonable. My boyfriend and I ate for about $15. Next time though I'm planning ahead to buy a jar of the pear chai jam. (Yes, it's that good!)
Yo, the food is good, no doubt. But if you go here during the weekday, expect to see what is best described as snooty, inefficient, "what do you want from us, we just work here" type of service.
For example, if you show up on a Tuesday at a generally off-peak hour, expect a lengthy wait. Somehow, even though there's 3 tables open, there's a wait. And cause it's a weekday, there's no coffee. And, it's cold outside. And, when a table for 4 opens up, they'll seat the party of 1 at that table, rather than sit him at the table for 2 that's also open. When you ask if you could sit at the table for 4, the server states in an air of arrogance that astounds me to this day, "I believe this gentlemen is first."
After waiting almost a half hour for this charade to play out, we left and hit up Pine state biscuits. Talk about an it-was-meant-to-be situation! YUM.
Sorry Jam, some places are so good it's worth the surly service. Unfortunately, you're not one of them.
Met with the PDX Breakfast Club at Jam this morning and had one of the best scrambles I've ever tasted -- the Autumn Scramble, with mushrooms, goat cheese, and squash. Holy yum!
They were accommodating for our group of 6, which is about the most that can be seated together in their compact space. The staff kept our coffee and water filled, and everyone's food looked de-lish!
It didn't hurt that they have a coffee station set up outside so you can get your caffeine on while you wait.
So this guy took me here once for brunch/lunch whatever.. the lady who served us was in a pretty shitty mood but served us alright. For it being a vegetarian place I was expecting a little more. When she told me that they served morning star sausages in the "burritos," I was a bit disappointed. I can honestly make the shit at home. But it was alright for it being small and way packed with janky hipsters discussing how Ben gave them the herps. Jeez
Had a pretty awesome breakfast burrito wrap thingy with eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, cheese, salsa, and sour cream. The white chocolate mocha I washed it down with was also pretty fantastic. Brenda was our server and she was efficient, nice, and her art rocks.
I got a Oregon squash scramble here today, out-fuggin-standing! (and I'm an omnivore, like a black bear). Hashbrowns were ample and some of the best I've had in Portland. Toast comes in all sorts of options including two kinds of sprouted bread (bread that is actually good for you, and not expendable. It's even more healthy than so-called "whole grain" breads. I got some to make up for my goat-cheesy three-egg omelet) The Coffee was Stumptown, and very potent, my heart is still break-dancing.
Service was...a bit detached, but effective. Don't expect any lively conversation. Keep in mind this was a Monday morning and I was the only one in my party.

Pretty Great.
Service:
The servers were nice, but the general attitude of the cafe is a bit snobby. Well a lot snobby. Like pretentious in that hipster i'm so much cooler than you sort of way. But some people really go for that so I mean, whatever. What really bothered me is how unaccommodating and inhospitable some of their policies are: A sign at the door read something to the extent of "We will not push furniture together for a large group, if you want to eat here you will be seated at seperate, smaller tables. No Exceptions." And on the menu there was a large note in capital letters that said "DON'T CAMP OUT AT YOUR TABLE. PLEASE PAY YOUR CHECK AND LEAVE." Granted, this may seem like a courtesy to the people waiting in line for the tables, but it's just downright rude. They should at least be conscious of the language they use, and try to delight people, not offend them.
Atmosphere:
We went at 12:30 on a Wednesday, and only had a 15 minute wait for a table. It really wasn't that bad, especially since they start you out with coffee while you wait. But with that said, I can imagine a Saturday would just be WILD.
The tables were tiny and it was really crowded and small. But the art on the walls was fantastic, and the decor and menu design was really really nice. The ambiance was kind of like a cute little bar scene, it was really noisy due to the small space and a semi-open kitchen, but with the loud hip music, it was not really a bad thing.
Food:
The food was fantastic and served in really big portions. I had the challah french toast with blueberry compote and fresh berries. I also ordered a side of hash browns and I was STUFFED. I could only eat about half of it. Delicious! The prices are average. it was about 28 bucks for two people including tip. But it could be a lot less if you don't get all the extras and drinks.
The food made it all worth it. But the hipster pretentiousness still bothers me. Oh well, it's Portland, what do you expect?
I've had a few breakfasts at Jam, but the one that really knocked my knickers off was when I had the Lemon-Ricotta pancakes. These 'cakes are the best thing since sliced bread - and taste way better too.
Jam doesn't stop at the lemon-ricotta though, they serve those the tasty cakes with a delicious side of blueberry compote. No syrup needed.
Awesome coffee, awesome service, awesome place.
my mouth is watering just thinking about Jam.
there's a reason there is always at least a half hour wait to get in and get some brunch. if you do get stuck in the wait, they always have stumptown available for you to sip on. its a pretty small space but there's always great art on the walls, and it changes pretty frequently.
i've had mixed experiences with the service. a few servers that were really friendly and great, and a few that were just wayyy too cool to be serving the lowly likes of myself.
as a vegetarian (and not especially fond of eggs) i love breakfast places that offer tofu as a substitution for eggs in scrambles, wraps, etc. Often times though, kitchens don't seem to put in much effort towards making the tofu flavorful -- NOT the case with Jam. i love there tofu! I have been addicted to the JD Massacre breakfast wrap (with tofu instead of eggs!) for ... going on maybe 6 months? IT IS DELICIOUS! Herby delicious scrambled tofu with hash browns, swiss cheese, veggies all wrapped up in a tortilla and served with a side of the most incredible housemade roasted red pepper sauce.
you can get sides of single pancakes -- the lemon ricotta pancake is a must!
the cocktail menu looks great, but i unfortunately i have yet to try anything on it.
I have never had a bad food experience at Jam, and honestly i am happy to ignore the few times i've had subpar servers because the food is so goddamn good. My carnivorous friends i've noticed don't seem to love it quite as much as i do, but they still generally always really enjoy there food.
I live about a 2 min walk from the place and have to told myself back from ducking in for a bite on a daily basis.
Wow. My stomach hurts, but in a good way. As a habitual french toast orderer, I'm pretty accustomed to getting less food than I expect when breakfasting out.
Today, however, was different. Jam on Hawthorne filled me up and sent me home with a mountain of hashbrown leftovers.
I ordered the "Tommy's Joint" wrap, which was eggs, veggie chorizo, beans, and some other good stuff I don't remember. It was hearty, filling, and great-tasting. After finishing that, I had no chance to summit the mountain of hashbrowns that came on the side.
Additional bonuses include: cool paintings on the walls, lots of windows (although all the people waiting outside to eat block most of the view), an obviously kid-friendly bathroom--if you're into that kind of thing, and friendly waitstaff.
Finally, this was my first time here, but I'll have to go back because the menu is full of good-looking stuff, much of it veggie-friendly, incidentally.
This place is the perfect place to go for breakfast.
i am not a pancake person, but i had a bite of my friend's Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, and there was a party in my mouth. Creamy, light, and perfect. I had the egg and chorizo breakfast sandwhich with hasbrowns which were good but nothing like those pancakes. I eyed her plate enviously the entire time. She also got an order of the oatmeal blueberry chai pancake which tasteed like a dessert, but was a litle too heavy for breakfast. i ended this meal with a passion iced tea and i was ready for my big day of exploring portland.
While the food has been pretty good at moments, and I have been treated wonderfully by the server Murph.
I have been back other times and the service has been terrible. After waiting for 1+ hours the server did not ask if we wanted our group split, which we would have gladly.....where there is a sign that says that is what they would do.
Prior to this the waitstaff had scoffed at us every time she walked outside to serve outside. We were hot, having to stand in the sun forever and they were not accommodating, polite, helpful or efficient. There was a table sitting outside that was empty and too small for 30 minutes before they asked us if we wanted to squeeze into and be further sweltered by the sun.....Maybe 30 minutes ago? but not now. We ended up having to eat across the street because it was so bad.
I would take Genie's, Juniors, Milo's City Cafe, or Screen door any day over this place. Sorry!
Every time I go back to this place it gets worse and worse. The wait is longer, the waitstaff more surly, and the hipsters more.... uh... tragically hip. While I am still a fan of the corned beef hash, the other food I've had here is pretty meh, and when combined with the insane wait, it's totally not worth it for me. If I'm going to wait for an hour, I'm eating Mother's or Screen Door or something else phenomenal.
This is still a great spot for veg-heads and vegans, as the numerous choices abound. That for me will leave it at 3-stars.
I wasn't there on the day that my friends got treated like shit by the host/waitstaff, so I can't drop stars for that. This is just based on my last few trips to Jam.
Given the choice, I tend to avoid.

Bummer.
I really used to like this place, but after today, I don't think that I will ever go back. Nor will I take my out of town guests or meet girlfriends there for brunch, like I have done so many times.
It seems recently every time that I go to Jam there is a new sign up around the front door explaining some new "rule" that they have instilled. I get it, I am a server. I know how annoying customers can be when they are grumpy and hungry for breakfast. They get pushy and impatient while waiting and they often lurk around in the way, then after their meal, when presented with their check, they linger at their table with total disregard for the other, annoying, impatient, hungry customers waiting. So...I can sympathize with a smaller cafe's policy when it comes to posting a sign that asks when there is a wait that you finish, pay your bill and free up the table for the next guests. I also get that large parties may have to be split up in order to accommodate around small tables and long wait times, another sign posted in the window.
Having a short staff sucks. Dealing with a busy Sunday brunch short staffed is hell on earth. I get it.
Our party of 6 was ignored while we stood waiting in the beating sun for an hour and 5 minutes (to be exact) while we watched the parties before us, and well after us get sat at all of the open tables. NEVER ONCE were we asked (or even acknowledged ) if we would like to split up. The only communication that we received from either of the servers on staff was a grumble and a rude "excuse me" as they got annoyed at us when we were in their way. I would like to also mention that we were only in their way trying to shade ourselves from the hot sun while waiting an hour and 5 minutes.
On a side note, the busser is cool. Ever time I have been to this place he is always smiling, and I think for a moment he tried to help us. By that point, when he had a 4-top in the sun for us to sit at, we were a bit beyond the point of no return, so sorry dude if I snapped at you...I know you did your best.
Anywhoo, sad news. Even when we tried to be courteous and let them know that we were crossing our name off the list and leaving we were met with blame and snarky rudeness. "You never told us you would split up" one of the servers said as she crassly smiled at us. That is YOUR policy. It is written plainly on your window. WE should not have to bring up to YOU, the person who is employed there. And by the by, if you would have stopped what you were doing for one second and talked to us, we would have been happy to mention that.
Like I said, bummer. I'm gonna miss you Ty's BB, I guess it's off to spend my hard-earned brunch money somewhere else.
I have to disagree with my good buddy Don B. here and have to say "Nay" on the Jam. I have been to this place about three times. First two times was mediocre experience and last time to be horrible experience. Personally, I believe the food is ok here. It's not spectacular or disappointing. The breakfast I have had there is between average and good. This on top of the wait and service here brings the whole experience down to two stars for me.
Last time I went here we waited more than an hour. Hour and five minutes to be exact. I don't mind waiting for that long if it is justified but we watched a dirty empty table that we could have sat on, sit there for at least 20 minutes outside. On the door, Jam clearly defines that with more than 5 people they will split us up to sit at two tables. Again, I sat there and watched two tables open up inside that we could have sat on be filled by people behind us on the list. Nobody came and talked to us. When we finally talked to them and we were told a big table was just finishing up. We waited...and that table did not leave.
We looked across the street and decided to go to the bakery and eat. Since we were starving waiting people eat for more than an hour. Out of courtesy, we told them we were leaving, we were met with coldness by the people who work there. We explained our situation and they asked us why we didn't ask to be split up....all I could do is think of that sign they put up on their door.
Yes, their jam is good and the food is decent but not as decent as the way we were treated here. I usually give people the benefit of the doubt but I have to say this wasn't a pleasant experience. It would take a lot for me to go back here.
YeeeHaawww!
Had brunch there on Sunday with my hubby and the boys.
Shockingly, this was my first trip to Jam. I am in love. It was hotter than hell out, and we sat outside.
Started with a gallon of water which they were happy to keep bringing, then added the pomegranate champagne yummy drink...mmmmm!
Food, starving, and it was a little bit of a wait for the food, but hell our hour wait was reduced to 35 mins, so I'm not complaining.
I ordered the spinach, tomato and goat cheese scramble. Wooo, the amount of garlic they put in that thing almost knocked me out, but it was soo good. Ate almost all of it and the hash-browns, and the side of bacon :)
Service was great. Had a few people taking our orders, and I think it was becasue nobody wanted to stand outside too long.
Big fan, next time I am going to try to get there earlier, so the wait isn't that long, but i was certainly happy when we left.
I think the breakfast stars aligned perfectly for me on my first visit to Jam. No crazy wait, decent service, not too busy and decent grub. I had met up with a friend I hadn't seen in several years and the staff was very patient with our yapping and lack of prompt ordering.
But there is this nagging feeling that something was missing...I ordered "the bizness" which is a breakfast version of a reuben. The sammy rocked but the side of unseasoned hashbrowns harshed my food buzz.
There is a pretty large drink selection, so I tried my luck with a spicy black chai...my luck must have run out. I highly doubt it was steamed past 130, not spicy and very weak. I am a tea snob though and if I return I will def be specific when ordering.
Do I think this will be a regular haunt? I dunno yet. I am giving one last try with the old man and hopefully they will deliver the warm tingly feelings.
My girlfriend and I were up very early one day, and we decided to go to Jam because we knew that way we could beat the rush I read about here on Yelp.
Because my girlfriend was paying (I'm really broke and jobless this summer), I let her pick both of our meals so that way she could try the sweet and the savory thing that she wanted. She ordered The Bizness and the lemon ricotta pancakes with blueberry compote. These aren't really the things I would have wanted to try, but I liked them nevertheless. My girlfriend really really liked both of them. The pancakes were very yummy, but I'm not usually a pancake person unless I'm in the mood for them.
I do have to say that I really liked their hashbrowns. They were cooked just right.
I might add another review later when I go back and try something that I actively want, because I feel like I didn't get a good read on the place.
My one quibble with the other reviews -- where were these supposed hipsters? All my girlfriend and I saw were families with their kids! Maybe we were up too early for the hipsters to be out yet.
Oh, no worries. Food is still amazing. HOWEVER.
You know the economy is bad when they stop serving breakfast for dinner. I haven't been this upset since I found out they are discontinuing my cigarettes of choice. Gah.

I come to you with an issue stemming from a place of deep avoidance of all things brunch. This… Read more »
This is currently my favorite breakfast spot in SE. They have a lot of really original options, and their corned beef is amazing.
I like to order "The Bizness", only partially because I like to say "Give me the bizness". It's a bagel with corned beef, egg, cheese and thousand island dressing. Down south they call it "One thousand island dressing".
They also make their own soy chorizo (soyrizo) which is amazing, however don't order a side of it because it just comes out like a spoonful on a plate....kind of stupid.
The service is pretty good, but expect a wait after 10 on weekends like all the breakfast places in SE (WTF is up with that?....endlessly annoying)
The only complaint I have with Jam is that they have a really yummy looking pancake option which is made with a vegan batter. Vegan food really sucks ass, I don't even think vegans can argue otherwise.
And if vegans really want to save the world they should kill themselves and stop consuming altogether. I mean why stop at eggs and cheese?
I've had some great times at Jam. Sure, there's the fact that every time I've gone there I've been hungover, which in turn only leads me to stare into the abyss of alcoholism laid out before me, but isn't Jam's very existence an onslaught against these demons of tomorrow and ghouls of yesterday? Breakfast is the celebration of daybreak, a joyous testament to the fact that the fucked up shit I did last night couldn't destroy my soul's never ceasing quest for the delicious. To me, Jam is the ultimate exercise in the zen and now. It's like a lover or a good dog; someone who sees that distant look in your eyes and says "hey buddy, we'll all be there eventually. For now lets just eat some delicious breakfast."
And a delicious breakfast it is!!! I'm sure there are people who would say the food is too salty, but would those same people slight our majestic oceans for a similar fault? If adventure is the call of the day, wouldn't I rather find myself crashing against the waves of a delicious scramble or plate of corned beef hash than find myself mired in the banal puddle of IHOP or (God forbid) Red Robin? For those who have yet to temper themselves against Jam's flavorful onslaught, I say back to land, naves!!! Never on a listless and unforgiving sea does a crew mutiny against Captain Delicious!!!!
Only on the finest vessel could a high hope for deliciousness be maintained, and Jam is near the finest of the fleet. If our volley against the corporate shill is to see life imitate art, then Jam is the concept's very essence. The interior is cramped and forgettable, much like a mess hall on the high seas, but its the players involved who make the experience sparkle. The service crew is top notch, and the ambiance provided by Hawthorne is second to none. Any place where a man with an eye patch tries to teach would-be patrons sidewalk etiquette can always be expected to entertain.
Hail and well met, Jam! Your salty food reminds me of Columbus' historic voyage: initially astounding, but sure to cause more than a few innocent deaths in the end.
Great place for breakfast, which I came here for twice on a recent visit to Portland. The oatmeal blueberry chai pancakes were simply mind-blowing! I savored every bite. The lemon ricotta pancakes weren't too shabby either, and the ricotta leant them a great lightness/fluffiness. The pesto scramble was super tasty, as well. As the name of the restaurant implies, they make their own jam. I tried the blackberry and apple varieties, both of which beat anything you can get in the store. Combine the good food with a nice, low-key vibe and a great location on Hawthorne, and you have a prime breakfast destination.
We've hit this place twice now on various trips to Portland. Delicious! Great, original breakfast cocktails for those rough mornings, enormous portions, lots of veg options, and free coffee while you wait. Get stuffed, then ride your bike east to Laurelhurst Park and take a nap in the sunshine (if you're lucky enough to be there on a sunny day).
Depending on when you come, especially on the weekends, you may have to wait outside for awhile to be seated but the food is worth it! They provide Stumptown coffee on a cart for you to sip on as you wait. Once you're seated service is pretty quick.
Great vegetarian options. Things I had that were great:
1. Ty's Big Breakfast , so good with the creamy gravy~
2. Lemon ricotta pancakes are moist and melts in your mouth.
3. The breakfast burrito is savory, especially with the salsa.
4. Scrambled tofu is one of the best I ever had with fresh ingredients.
You can ask to have your hash browns cooked extra crispy. Servers and the cook are more than accommodating.
Wish this place was closer!
The scrambles at Jam are good. But they offer free coffee while you wait. Good Coffee. That earn's them an extra star from me.
The food here is really just Ok. I convienietly close to Jam so I've ended up coming a lot. I think on a couple of occasions I've had a dish that is really good. But most of the time its just ok.
But hey good free coffee. I'm a fan :)
By far my favorite SE breakfast spot. The hashbrowns are amazing, they have an amazing scrambles. They top it all off with stumptown coffee. Go to the Jam, wait in the line, enjoy a great breakfast.
Jam on Hawthorne is my favorite breakfast place in Portland. It was a fluke discovery; my girlfriend and I were driving around one morning, starving, looking for a place to eat, and we stopped at the first appetizing place we saw. And what a discovery it was!
That particular morning there was no wait; subsequent trips have proved otherwise, but they make up for it by providing self-serve coffee and in the outside waiting area. If you get there before 10am, you should be ok as far as the wait goes, at least on weekends. Anytime after that and you'll be looking at a line.
The food is first-rate. Portions are generous - one burrito is enough for both of us to split, along with a lemon ricotta pancake, and coffee or a breakfast cocktail. The menu is large, with tons of choices, but I have to recommend the "Tommy's Joint" with vegetarian chorizo -- it's off the chain -- dab a little Secret Aardvark sauce on it (which they also sell), some sour cream, and your mouth is in for a party! There are tons of vegetarian options, and they don't skimp at all on the amount of food you get for your money.
The place has an artsy feel to it; paintings adorn the walls and the floor sports a black and white checkerboard tile.
So make your way out one morning, and treat yourself to one of the best breakfasts this city has to offer. Be sure to get there early, though!
Called Jam cause it's just that, the jam. I grew up eating chorizo and eggs thanks to my Father. When I learned what it was......well, I had a hard time enjoying it. I like that I can have a super morning cocktail and a scrumptious soyrizo breakfast. This has been my spot for the last few outings mmmmmm. Now I don't fit in my pants so I'm on restriction.
Really cool place, with lots of vegetarian options.
I had the lemon ricotta pancakes, hash browns, veggie chorizo, and scrambled tofu. All *excellent*.
The pancakes were fluffly, yummy and moist.
The veggie chorizo was spicy, and I'd bet money would satisfy even the most discriminating meat eater.
The hash browns were buttery and crunchy,
Finally, the scrambled tofu was remarkably good. To me, they tasted just like scrambled eggs.
If you're going to call yourself "Jam" You better have some damn fine jam. Jam's jam wasn't damn fine. It was far from it. If you want damn fine jam go to Biscuits. Jam's jam is more snot-like rather then jam-like.
Jam is far too fancy for me. One look at there menu and I was scared. The walls started to close in on me, I couldn't breath, and I started to frantically flip back and forth through the menu in search of something simple. Then a glimpse of light reflected off of my menu and showed me the way to the promised land. "Build your own scramble." Hallelujah!
One bacon, mushroom, and swiss cheese scramble later I was full... but I couldn't help but notice Grand Central Bakery starring at me across the street. Calling to me like a mistress of the night. I was left with thoughts of what could have been. Is the grass greener on the other side? I don't know but I think I'll take a peek next time and skip Jam.
This place rocks! Yes, you may have to wait for a table, but they provide excellent stumptown coffee to enjoy while you wait, and as long as its not raining, what is there to complain about?
The blueberry chai pancakes are excellent: lightly crispy on the outside, cakey on the inside. The oatmeal is quite good as well. A cocktail with emergen-c! Everything was reasonably priced. Service was friendly and prompt. I'll definitely be back on my next visit to Portland.
Ty's Big Breakfast. That about sums it up for me why Jam's on Hawthorne deserves as many stars as they do. It is perfection (and clogged arteries) on a plate. It's finger-lickin' good, too! (Don't ask...)
About the only negative with this place is the long-ass lines on the weekends if you get there any time after 830am. I mean, you're supposed to be able to sleep in on the weekends, right? But, apparently, you can't if you want a shot at having breakfast in a timely manner.
Although, bacon and eggs sounds good just about any time of the day...
I'm not a fan. It took forever to get in simply because they just don't have enough workers. Food was okay. But it wasn't anything special. Service was slow, the staff was very nice, but there seriously is nothing "Special" about this place. Except for hipster go here. Not because the food is amazing though. Because it's not.
I love the food here! I don't have a complaint about the wait like everyone else does because I NEVER go on a Saturday and Sunday. Never. There are always swarms of people hanging out for a table. The food is good but it's not that good.
I've only been to Jam a few times but I thoroughly enjoyed the food and service both times. No complaints. Their breakfast cocktails are yummy too.
This used to be my favorite breakfast spot. We (Husband and I) started eating there when they first opened about 6 years ago, and fell in love.
Unfortunately things have gone WAaaaaaaayyyyy downhill over the last year or so. The service is TERRIBLE. The last 2 times we went we did not leave a tip ,and we never ever do that. Seriously. The service was just that bad. They took forever to take our order, didn't bring out food we ordered, never came back to check on us or refill our water, wouldn't bring the check and acted snotty. The food has gone from excellent to Meh, and there is always an insane wait on the weekends. I will wait for good food, but Jam is NOT worth the wait.
Also, they have all these really annoying signs posted everywhere with rules, and I think I even remember seeing some rules posted on the bottom of the menu. I counted something like 5 signs near the front door when I was there a few weeks ago. It reminds me of a second grade classroom, and is a HUGE turn off.
Takes forever to get a seat on the weekends, but they dole out coffee like crazy out front, and take care of you as best they can.
Things I dug about Jam:
-great art on the walls
-great selection of breakfast-y stuff
-tons of stuff for veg/vegans
-incredible jam
-really friendly servers
Not a ton of atmosphere in the place, so it's not a great place to try to take the paper and read and hang out (people will be vulturing around your table waiting for you to get up), but it's a nice place for a social breakfast with some friends. Not the most relaxing dining experience ever, but I guess if you really wanted a relaxing breakfast, you probably should've stayed home with some coffee and jazz, eh?
What a disappointment. I waited 1.5 for hours this food and a $50 bill after tip?
My order: Ty's Big Breakfast.
Her order: Corned Beef Hash.
Side order: Two lemon pancakes & two Bloody Mary's (or whatever they call them here). Oh, and a coffee while we waited outside for an hour.
Ty's Big Breakfast is not that big. Corned beef hash lacked sufficient amounts of corned beef. I could count the strands on one hand and they had no salt-flavor what-so-ever. Service was fairly disconnected.
The gravy in Ty's Big Breakfast was nothing to call home about. Eggs are eggs. The "veggie sausage" tasted like a veggie sausage. The hashbrowns were thin and dry.
The english muffins were plain-ol english muffins. I'd prefer a homemade biscuit. The jams (which more resemble paste) were OK. I've had better at other diners. If I were to hit up a breakfast place on Hawthorne, Cup and Saucer is better.
Daaaaaaamn impressive.
As I've heard many say, well worth the forty-minute wait. Add your name to the list as soon as you arrive (run, don't walk), then indulge with some free coffee outside in the cold while you wait for your name to be called. If I ever become homeless (because those things can happen) I will pretend to be a patron to this place often and cash in on that free coffee.
My brother called his Corned Beef Hash "a religious experience" and said something about an orgasm. I believed him, because my pricey breakfast burrito was worth every penny of the $8.50 I paid for it and then some. Tons of vegetarian options, all done very well. I didn't even mind that the floor was dirty and that there was a baby staring at me (it was a hideous baby too, I'll tell you whut).
Set aside an entire morning for this venture.
***IMPORTANT PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT***
When exiting the establishment - whether after you have added your name to the list, when you're checking to see how many names are left on the list before yours, or when you are done with your meal - please note that you push the LEFT side of the door, and not the right side. The door opens on the left and swings out right. Thank you.
So what this place is a total clusterfuck, I'm usually so completely unaware (unalive) to even notice my surroundings when I actually wake up early to go for breakfast. Throw in screaming babies, a pair of loud lesbians, what have you - as long as there are eggs scrambled with love juice, sandwiched in between an english muffin, drenched in veggie sausage gravy with habanero sauce on the side I am as golden as Flava Flav's grill. The paradise iced tea is so off the chain I have now scavenged the internets looking for local shops that carry it. I need me some more Texas tea y'all!!
If I ever wake up before 11AM on a weekend morning again - there is a very huge possibility that you can find me at the Jamiliscious.
Yes I always want to Jam on Hawthorne and today seemed like a perfect opportunity. Turned out to be Jam doesn't have A/C. They only have ceiling fans and a portable fan. On the hottest day of the year, seemed like other place might be a better option. Since we already ready to Jam on Hawthorne we decided to stay.
I got the BOL. It's hashbrown with veggies covered with sausage gravy and cheddar cheese. When I got my food, I didn't see any cheddar cheese or veggies. Our waitress was ok. She seemed like she's not having a good day. Maybe she's just irritated with the hotness of the place (not in that kind of "hotness" criteria).
I used my entertainment book coupon for buy 1 entree get another 1 free. So it was $5 for breakfast for my friend and I. I think next time, I'll try a different entree than the BOL. I need to remember that not all BOL is as good as Chipotle BOL.
