Although it's just a shade too far west for some in the Loop for after work drinks, I'm keeping it in my back pocket for just that, with 40 beers on tap! Great beer list with Firestone Walker IPA, Leffe Brune, Two Brothers. I did not get chance to try the Lagunitas Sucks, but I'll be back soon for that.
When March Madness comes around, nearby Dylan's Tap is downright mad! Jaks does not have as many flat screens, but it should be easy enough to request a table within view of a TV for all the action.
On my last visit I ordered off of the specials menu: Montego Enchiladas. Chicken enchiladas with a pineapple-tomatillo salsa, served with black beans and spanish rice. The enchiladas were a little dry, and where was the pineapple? I asked my nice attentive server for a side of the salsa and 10 seconds later someone from the kitchen was setting it on my table. Damn! That's fast!
Another nice visit to Jaks!Listed in: Oh, The Places That I'll Go!, Nachos Nachos Nachos!, Get Your Suds On

Came here yesterday for a quick bite, bloody Mary's and the last half of the bears game.
The game sucked, the service sucked but our pizza rocked.
Decent beer list, pizza is thin crust and oh so tasty.
Bloody Mary's so-so,
So the stars above are only based on food, which I would give more for, however the service is horrible.
We sat in the bar, almost on top of the bartender, and was ignored when it came to ordering food. Quick on the first round of drinks, forgot one beer with the second order.
I had to get up from my seat and go up to the waiters area to get his attention to order our food after 20 minutes of playing the starring game.
As I approached, he walked by me and said it would be a minute.
Sorry to inconvenience you by me being here and wanting to spend money in your establishment.
I wont be back, however I will order take out Za. -

This was my fourth time at Jaks, and up until this visit I was not that into it - the first time I got a burger that wasn't great, then I got the Cuban Nachos which I didn't think were great, and then I got the regular nachos that were good, but nothing to write home about)...
The fourth visit it all fell into place: I got the Chicago Prime Rib Melt with a side of jalapeno mac n cheese - heaven! Just the right amount of fat on the melt and not greasy at all and the same goes for the amazing mac - it tasted totally homemade and not like they just added Jalapeno to regular mac.
I also got the Ipswitch Oatmeal Stout which it very dark and tastes like a cross between beer and coffee. -

Jak's is a laid back bar with good food and a great beer selection. I have found that servers and food runners are always polite and attentive. Also, we went here with out of town family to watch the Penn State game which is hard to find in Chicago - the staff was very flexible for us! I have been back numerous time since it's in walking distance for me.

I've been going to Jak's since October 2009. I absolutely LOVE this place.
We'll start with the beer since that seems to be the highlight of everyone's visits. Mike and Marshall are top notch bartenders. These guys are seriously just great. They remembered my bf and I after only being in there a couple of times. They remembered our drinks.
We've been drinking the same thing (usually) for the past 2 years. Left Hand Milk Stout is just amazing on tap. Their beer selection is one of the best I've found. I'm a big fan of stouts and porters, and Jak's has some good ones.
Their food? Well I love it. Their pizza, loaded nachos, and Reuben are favorites of mine. They make a mean Reuben. I've had some restaurants ruin it but they nail it every time. They've never made a fuss about substituting or adding extras.
Granted, I've only ordered from the bars so I've never dealt with their servers. We always go in the evening and stick around until closing time.
If you love a good beer selection and a great, laid back atmosphere, this place is a must to check out! -

I realized Jak's was close to our indoor soccer field and now it is our new go to for post game celebrations. The service can be slow at times, but really it is super chill and they seem to always have gumballhead on tap, which no one can really say.

I am suspect at how often they clean their tap lines because a coworker and I got really sick the next day after only a few beers. Food is mediocre. The best thing is the new buffalo pizza. Good prices and nice staff.

My mouth may be pissed off at me, but my stomach is a happy camper.
My boyfriend and I stopped here one evening on the way from my office to the Hawks game.
The atmosphere was great. This would be fantastic place for a happy hour.
The service was great. We were in a bit of a hurry to get to the game, and the waitress was very accommodating. She was also very polite.
The beer selection is stellar, and the food was fantastic. I ordered the Surfin Bird Burger with onion rings. I don't usually like Turkey burgers, but this sounded good so I went for it. I'm glad I did! There was a good quantity of fresh, tasyy avocado on the burger which is surprisingly uncommon for burgers boasting avocado. The Pico was a bit spicy for me, but I have the spicy food tolerance of an infant. The onion rings were top notch - nice and crispy.
Jak's has definitely earned itself a return visit. -

Great service, great food, and great prices. What more can you ask for at a great Sports bar (great lunchin')!
I've come here for a quick lunch with my pals, we ate burgers, salads, love their sides (mash & gravy, mac & cheese or hummus & veggies)
Cajun cesar salad, Patty melt, Bacon Burger, etc etc.
All were just well made and great portions, the beers of the day was POINT beer, not too bad. (super light)
Check this place out! yum fun!Listed in: Good for Groups

My friend and I had a private party in one of their rooms about a week ago and we were so pleased by our experience. Our e-mails and phone calls were returned in a prompt manner leading up to the party. There were no hidden fees and everything was very fair.
On the night of the party, the back room was set up and staffed by a private bartender and busboy. Everything was clean and well displayed. The private bathrooms were also extremely clean. The bartender was friendly and skilled.
We ordered food throughout the evening also. The pizzas were a big hit with everyone, as was the huge bowl of salad we ordered via the catered menu. (The only thing we were upset with was that we forgot to take home the leftovers!) The food came out quickly. Our guests also ordered off of the regular menu and were pleased by what they got.
I would recommend Jak's to anyone hosting a private party. I'm definitely returning! -

Great food and great service for a really reasonable price. Good selection of American pub fare, with something for everyone. Nice selections of beers too. They even carry sprechers root beer on tap.
Lots of booths and tables. When we come in with a group of 8 or so, they always accommodate us right away and are really nice about it.
My only complaint is that sometimes the music is too loud. -

This place is pretty cool for an after-work drink. It is a bit west of the loop so when we got there at 5pm on a Monday night, it was not crowded at all.
They have an impressive list of beers on draft, catering to most varieties of beer aficionado.
The bartender and server that night were kind of slow though, there were open seats at the bar and tables around us, and we still found ourselves waiting at our table (which was right next to the bar) for beers quite a bit. So much so that it was easier to just get up and go to the bar. Not sure if they were just starting a new shift or what.
But whatever. Lots of good beers there, I would recommend it. -

You people are probably going to shoot me, but I am not reviewing Jak's based on the beer. I went here on a dinner-date on my birthday, neither of us ordered alcohol. I had a mushroom burger with BBQ sauce and fries, she had a large sandwich with mashed potatoes. My food was not bad, but not too great either. I think I would have liked it much much more without the BBQ sauce, but that's not the restaurant's fault because I ordered it with the sauce.
I have to confess the waitress creeped me out a bit, and that's the reason for the lousy rating. She had a stone face, like Wednesday from the Addams Family movies, and she came by WAY too often after we had finished the meal, which both distracted me from the date and gave me the strong impression that she wanted us to leave the restaurant.
If I was judging on just the food, I'd probably come back, but they really need to screen their waitstaff better. -

I think my waitress was supposed to work until midnight but she mentally clocked out at 10:30pm. I had to get up and find her four times to:
1) Get a menu
2) Place my order
3) Get my check
4) Adjust my check (I had a gift certificate which I gave to her at the beginning and she forgot)
5) Give her my credit card
OK so it was five times. She was very nice but all pistons weren't firing if you know what I mean.
I will say that food was close to awesome. I got the bbq combo platter which had a half rack of ribs and 1/4 chicken. Both were really moist and flavorful and the ribs were very meaty. The salad I started with was super fresh and they have many dressings to choose from. Further, the beer list is top-notch.
Don't bother going to Smoque for bbq, go to Jak's but get it to go. -

Happy hour has been in the West Loop for the last couple of weeks and we started at Jaks. This place was great! The food was really good and the beer selection was huge! My buddy got ribs and he said they were really good.
The only two issues we had were that it was 5:30pm and there were not spots at the bar or bar tables available so we had to sit at one of their regular tables. We were okay with that, but then the service was really not that good. We were waiting for a while to get our orders in and to finally get the check.
This place does have a pool table and Golden Tee in the back if you are looking for that. Also, if you are driving, don't pay for parking on Jackson, just go on one of the north/south streets that have free parking. -

Out of 5...
Ambiance = 4
Food = 3
Drink = 3
Service = 3
The place had a comfortable feel with a decent layout. Natch -- there was a pool table! Although I wish the TVs were positioned better in relation to the booths. Right now, only one side of a booth could see a TV without neck craning. Some adult-contemporary music circa 1990s was playing at a nice noise level. When they switched to the NFL game audio and more people arrive, the acoustics became very loud. It wasn't easy to hear people seated at the same table. Yet the spot easily accommodated group seating.
The food was definitely overpriced. I had fish and chips. They were okay. The fries definitely weren't the freshly-cut variety. For $12.99, I expected better quality. They did at least come out with all the necessary condiments prior to the food arriving (i.e. malt vinegar, tartar sauce, and etc.). The $12 10" pizza ordered by a friend was decent, just the crust needed to be thinner. Another friend had the blue cheese burger with french onions (which she had to remind them to bring). She said it was okay. It's great that Jaks is trying to offer a variety of items, but the execution needs work.
I really appreciated detailed descriptions of the beers, and that they offered seasonal brews along with taste tests. However, I'm not a fan of beer. The pricing was okay - $4.75 to $6+. I'd would like to see some cocktails represented, even with the tap moniker. There was a full bar though, so patrons could order whatever.
The service started off well, but since they were understaffed, it declined as the seats were filled. Water was replenished and plates were taken away fairly quickly though. If there was more than one server for the section, then I think the rating would have been 4, since we were attended to well otherwise.
I'd go back if in the area, but it wouldn't be top recommendation to friends nor would I make a special trip. -
Review from Tim Y.
Though they ran dry of one selection, it's not like you can't find something good to drink here. If you're into beer, or want to try something new, this is a good place to do so. At 7PM or so on a weeknight, there were no more than ten or twelve people in the place, tops, so the ambiance was quite nice and conducive to a good conversation without having to yell across the table.
The BBQ pork sandwich I had was huge, though the bun was pretty dense. I think it'd be better on a less "hearty" sandwich roll, but it was still pretty good with a lot of smoky flavor. The sauce wasn't anything spectacular, just typical sweet sauce. I'd get the sandwich again, though.
They pass the cole slaw test - quite tasty. The beans and rice were also pretty good, and a good alternative to fries. -

Jak's is a mixed bag. I was here for lunch recently, and the buffalo chicken pizza was unexpectedly tasty. Unfortunately our waitress disappeared partway through our meal. I don't know if she quit or if her shift just ended, but no one came along to pick up where she left off... Our drinks were not refilled, we had to get up to find a server so we could pay for our meals. It was very strange.

I had not previously been to Jaks but attended a birthday party there just recently. I walked through the main bar area and was pleasantly surprised at the back space where the party was held. The two large rooms provided separate areas for the dance floor, tables and even a dinner buffet. The food provided by Jaks was just a notch above okay- mostacholi, fried and bbq chicken wings, and salad. She was also allowed to bring in her own deejay as well as offer drink specials. While I didn't get to experience Jaks under normal circumstances, I was pretty impressed with it as a flexible option for a celebration. Keep in mind, that at the end of the day it's still a neighborhood bar....and still looks like one. However, if you value flexibility over frill, then check it out.
I can't give Jaks more than three stars because my drinks left much to be desired. But then again, I am a cocktail snob. The Margerita just didn't do it for me. Maybe next time. -

Monster beer list. mmmmm...
Great "American bar food".
Reliable delivery.
Fish tacos, Truck Stop sandwich, wings with house sauce, chili and grilled cheese combo-all terrific.
Desserts not that impressive.
No beer specials.
Easy to walk in and sit down. -

I am a UIC student, and I can say with all certainty that this is the place with the best beer selection in the area. Thanks to Jaks Tap we always have a place to live through midterms and enormous home assignments. We usually have beer there, but I can vouch for their fries -- they are phenomenal. Waiters are usually nice; only once we had to wait a bit for drinks, but that was a very busy day. On ordinary day the service is quite fast

Jak's is a great place to grab some really good pub grub, a couple icy cold brews, and kick back and watch the game. Their beer list is really solid, so many killer choices and everything from bocks to hoppy IPAs to Belgian blondes (gotta love Belgian blondes).
It's not too loud that you can't chat up your partner. The service is top notch, our orders always come out correct and fast. I wish I lived closer to Jaks! -

Spiffy Sports Bar.
Forgot how much I enjoyed the Jaks vibe and its arsenal of enthusiastic staff until my recent return here to peep a certain Chicago team of brutes bring home that Stanley Cup. Hooah!
Beer. Bier. Brewski. Cervesa. Bira. Eer-Bay.
However you pronounce it, Jaks has brews aplenty! Very impressive imbibing line up for what seems to be just your average neighborhood spot with a LOT of tv's. Start with a Piraat, Framboise, Allagash, Magic Hat or Bell's and then on to a smooth draft blended Apple-Berry, Snake Bite or Black Velvet. yes, Yes, YES!
Jaks bites are somewhat bar generic but good for the eating when a beer belly turns into belly a-grumbling. Bites that are best......

/ Gigi's Grilled Cheese

Biggest bang for your buck? Mini cheeseburgers appetizer. There ain't nothin' mini about 'em! 4 large and in-charge melty cheese-covered babies saddled up to a full plate of fries pulls off a huge win for your group even when your favorite team doesn't.Listed in: Drink. The food is decent but they do have a good beer list and a full bar, so if you're going for drinks it is definitely worth it.
I think for the quality of food, Jak's is overpriced, but I go to UIC just down the street so I have been here often in the last few months. The beer selection makes it great for a happy hour and they have enough room for a large group. I wouldn't recommend this place as a place to sit and chat because it can get really loud in there, but for a sports-bar it's a pretty nice atmosphere. There's pool in the back and TVs all around, so everyone is having a good time. -
Review from Cassie D.
This was the perfect venue for a mini-reunion with some former co-workers. We were coming from all different directions and departing to completely different ones so Jak's was easy to get to and from for all. Once we arrived, we had no trouble getting a table that comfortably fit all six of us.
Extensive beer list (though I know that one of my companions was bothered that they didn't have his Heinekin but hey, we can't all be evolved beer drinkers... personally, I was thrilled by the beer list!). Totally reasonable prices. We sampled a bit of the food too - hummus, guacamole, and a pizza. Here's a hint - if you get pizza - make sure you get one that has the garlic oil on it - that stuff is amazing (and addictive). And if you all eat it, then it doesn't matter if you have garlic breath!
Service was great and I definitely would not hesitate to go back!Listed in: Beer Me

Jak's is nearby where I work and live, so I've had a ton of opportunities to form my opinion on them.
I've ordered in for lunch for clients at work and they are quick and concise taking orders and they rarely make mistakes. On the few times there has been a mistake they send someone over with the corrected item asap. When the order arrives every dish comes bagged separately with its side and is labeled clearly. You have NO idea how much easier it is to divvy out an order when that's done for you.. so as far as delivery goes, they're tops. They make take the full hour they say they will to get it to you FYI. Also I think they deliver beer so -bonus!
My dine in experiences were pleasant - not stand out by any means - but pleasant. They have an excellent waitstaff and the bussers are quick. The beer list is extensive and the menu is varied. The jalapeno mac is my go to choice for sides - but I'm a sucker for the two primary ingredients so I'm biased. I've had a variety of things to eat here and its all decent, but nothing knocks my socks off.
You'll never wait for a table and there's a good amount of free parking. That plus the TVs playing the game and all the positives I've listed make this a solid choice for a weeknight out.
Ladies be warned: their bathroom is less than stellar and claustrophobic. Yuck. -

The chicken nachos are enormous and very good, enough to share and then some!
The beer selection is very extensive with lots of options in different types of beer. The staff seemed knowledgeable about the beers and was able to suggest a recommendation based on my preferences.
I like this place because it is close walking distance from home and a good alternative to some of the other pubs in the neighborhood. -

I've lived about two blocks from Jak's for about 6 years, and have ordered from there probably 200-400 times over that span. Very good food, awesome people working there, an old school bar with a homey, neighborhood feel in a neighborhood that lacks it.
I also go there often to watch NFL during the season (I'm a fan of an out of town team) and Mike and the crew on Sunday mornings and afternoons really takes good care of everyone who comes in for the games.

We always love going to Jak's Tap. It's a place near the Loop that is not overpriced and stuffy. The casual atmosphere and selection of vegetarian options on the menu are the selling points for us. Plus they serve Belgium beer in the proper glasses. Great selection of beers all around, including ciders and Lambics; not so hot in the wine department - but the staff and the food make up for it! Favorites: Mama Nature Portobello Sandwich, Bean Burrito, and Veggie Burger.

When it was announced that we were scoping out a place for an off-the-books work Christmas Party and Jaks was chosen, I thought my head was going to explode.
You see, I have had so many life-changing, scarring experiences here that I fear going back. Seriously, if anyone invites me to Jaks Tap out of the blue, I know it's to tell me that I'm an awful person or just to humiliate me in front of a large group. And I've never even gone there for my birthday when that sort of thing is just expected.
Yet each time Jaks is suggested, I make my way there like a lemming to a cliff because, well, it's really quite a good bar. The food here is one of Greektown's best kept secrets (even if the only Greek item on the menu is a salad). From the veggie burrito I had yesterday (using real beans instead of refried mush) when I was insulted by a co-worker to the bar nachos that are a staple of each time some girl has told me she's just not that interested in me, the combination of great food and painful conversation just keeps winning me back.
Thankfully there are a plethora of beers to choose from. Ranging from the unique domestic to imported craft beer, there are many ways to drown sorrows (or beer snob) - many of which will be unrecognizable from other bars. The imports are expensive (around $8 a pint) but that doesn't really matter at the start of a downward spiral. Yesterday's was assisted by Sin City cider from NYC. A sweet cider I hadn't seen anywhere else in Chicago and could cry into.
Jaks is a great place for groups, though it does get really noisy with the after work crowd. And for watching sporting events, due to its large rooms and television angles it's second to none. You'll just have to excuse me if I ever turn down an invitation there. It's probably for the best.Listed in: Surviving In The Food Desert

Love this place. Pretty rowdy with some strange people, but the food is delicious and the beers on tap make you spoilt for choice. I've tried the ribs, chili, and burgers, and they've all been delicious.
A great place to get together with some friends in the West Loop. -
Review from Helena B.
My father understands my love of craft beers, but commented this weekend that you can get micro brews just about anywhere now, so it's hard to discern the true beer-bars from those just riding out a "fad".
Jak's is a beer-bar.
The entire list of American Craft beers comes in three sizes: Sample, Pint, and Pitcher. While we are all familiar with the later two, the first is a cute 4 ounce pull in a mini-pint glass. This allows you to try new things with minimal commitment or try more beers than you would (or should) have if you were downing pints of each.
Veggie burger; the menu said it was chickpea-based, which I couldn't really picture as I placed my order, but ended up meaning that the patty was crumbly and fallafel-ish. Quite a tasty change of pace.
And cheers to our server who made what would have been a 3-star place into a 4-star experience! -
Review from Jelena Z.
Any bar that serves Delerium Tremens on tap is a friend of mine.
Jak's also serves Allagash White, a traditional Belgian wheat brewed in Portland, Maine. This makes Jak's Tap a dear friend.
Came through with a group of 7 for their twice annual beer tasting, Humulus Lupulus (no, nothing to do with hummus). Before the tasting, we grabbed a few pints and a couple of appetizers. Nice mix of young professionals and urban West Loop dwellers. Service was good considering the dense crowd, however, our server inadvertently left off a few beers and tracked us down an hour later (in the tasting room) to pay the deficit. He forgot, and we honestly overlooked the fact that our tab should have been about $20 higher. Slightly annoying.
Scene 2: Tasting room. Quite the assortment of seasonal and craft brews. Probably at least 20! Generous samples + complimentary pizza buffet to the tune of $15. What's not to love? I'll definitely return for the next Humulus Lupulus... and anytime I crave a delicious craft beer.Listed in: Beer Me Over: Chicago, Strength in numbers.

Delivery review:
We ordered pizza and a 1/4 fried chicken dinner from this spot. We live a couple of miles away, barely in the delivery zone. Still, it was fairly quick, less than 25 minutes before the guy rolled up on his bike. Now, since he was on a bike, our delish portabella mushroom pizza was askew but as I mentioned it was pretty tasty, cheesy and a bit garlicky. The fried chicken was a bit thin on the batter, but the mashed potatoes were delicious, also quite garlicky.
I noted on their menu/pamphlet that they delivered beer, and got excited when I saw their sizeable selection... BUT they would only deliver the boring stuff, miller, bud, pbr. I picked up a goose island pub pack a couple of blocks away and got back right when the food arrived. Nice.
