Ok, I've never been to Philly and the prospect of putting cheese-whiz on anything other than as a joke makes me kinda want to vomit. That being said, I really liked Jake's Steaks.

I didn't go for the "traditional" with the Whiz cause I just couldn't do it, however with provolone and mushrooms the sandwich was delicious.

Initially the GF and I were only going to grab a quick bite and move on but the laid back atmosphere and ALCS game on the flat screens won out.

We ended up staying for about 2 hours drinking beers and watching the game.

BIG PLUS for this place: They don't serve "traditional pints" they serve over-sized "pints"... but at a reasonable price.

Definitely a place to hit up!

Do not order items from here for delivery.  Consistently terrible at a) being on-time, b) delivering the correct items and c) not putting the right items on the sandwich.

Ordered today for 11am delivery, they showed up at 12pm, well past the lunch meeting.  Only excuse was that they were busy, but this is no excuse if you want to be in corporate catering/delivery business.

They completely missed a bag of items that include 1/2 the "finger" items.  Only apology was that they would redeliver at 1pm the missing items (now 2 hours past the meeting) or they would give us a credit.  Did not want to offer a refund.

Orders they did deliver were incorrect, including mayo on a cheesesteak that should not have been there.  The chicken and meat was not very good to top the meal off.

What better way to be a phat kid than to phill up at Jakes? I hear that it's the Amoroso roll that makes it, and I can't pretend like I know what I'm talking about, but the roll is money!

The Hoagie is my staple here: lettuce, tomato, American cheese, with onions and jalapenos! Polish it off with waffle fries and a beer, while all my emotions are concentrated on the Phillies pennant.

My running favorite is still Phat Philly's in the Mission.

Finally tried Jake's... I'm a big undiscriminating philly cheesesteak lover -- I've hardly met one I didn't like.

My husband and I were shocked, shocked! to find little to no cheese in our Jake's steaks. Otherwise, the meat was decent. The roll was decent. I think they're a bit pricey for charging extra for peppers and other toppings. You can can as many peppers as you like at Phat Philly's!

Maybe it was a one-off thing with the cook (did he forget to add the cheese???), but we won't be back.

Phat Philly's first, Buster's second still.

I'm from Boston, so I don't claim to know anything about cheesesteak. But these are damn good, best I've ever had (again, never been to Phili). Get it traditional style mushroom cheesesteak wiz wit (comes with onions) and you won't be disappointed.
They also deliver...not to my apartment unfortunately. If they delivered to my apt I would give 6 stars...

After having been to Pat's and Geno's in Philly many many times, I can safely say that Jake's has the BEST and MOST AUTHENTIC cheesesteaks in the SF Bay Area!!

Great meat, great roll and if you there's room, it's a fun place to watch Phildelphia sports!

I've never had a cheese steak before so I decided to try this one after visiting a friend who lived close by. And I must say, I am glad I'm no vegan anymore. I ordered the original cheese steak but substituted the cheeze whiz with provolone, I dunno there isn't anything appetizing sounding when you say whiz. And I must say I was really happy with what I got, there was sooo much MEAT, and the cheese was perfectly melted as well.

if i could give a 3.5, i would, but jake's is a great place for cheesesteaks in the city.  my favorite thing about jake's is THEY DELIVER.  HOWEVER, if you try to get delivery on a busy day (on a football sunday, for example) you can expect to wait an hour (but at least they tell you up-front).

if you love cheese-whiz cheesesteaks and waffle fries for a pretty good price, then jake's is a winner.

Imagine my Philly native butt's shock at finding a damn-near perfect philly cheesesteak outside of Philly without having to go to Vegas for Capriotis!

I'm laughing at the reviews that think this place is gross because they use Whiz....hello?!?! It's an F'n PHILLY cheesesteak place! They use Whiz in authentic cheesesteaks. Now personally, I, like you, am not a fan of Whiz but you know what I do? I get it with american. NAILED IT!

The key in making this authentic is the Amoroso rolls...mmmm so goooooooooooood! I mean christ! They even have italian water ice(pronounced wooter if you're from slower DE ya hearrrrrrrrrd) and tastykakes, and I think we all know, nobody bakes a cake as tasty as a tastykake.

If you're reading reviews and wanting to check out a fast, unhealthy sandwich place as a native NorCaler...these are pretty yummy sandwiches so go give it a try and see if you like em. If you're a native Tri-State area reader...get your ass to Jake's for the best cheesesteak I've had without having to pay $500 to fly home and get one.

Oh yeah! They deliver and they even keep one side of the the fries box open so the waffle cuts don't lose their crispiness.

I've never been to Philly, but I imagine you won't find a better cheesesteak outside of Philly then this place. The rolls they use are very soft and I think thats what makes it special. Total comfort food joint. Awesome when you are hungry and want something quick (other then jack in the box, or MCDs).

Apparently this is a good place for a gal, like myself, to meet MEN.

Rolled into this place around 6pm last night. The tvs were going--basketball and baseball. The meat was grilling and the beers were flowing. Score. I also had a young child with me, which added to my "it" factor. I was the one woman, and there were 8 guys in the place. A group of them began to chat me up, and then invited me to some movie/book/music thing going on at AT&T Park on June 6-7. Nice.

I ordered the child a small cheese steak with provolone, a side of waffle fries (who doesn' t love waffle fries?), and two sodas for $13.

The food came out quickly and it was enjoyed.

I have to try the one with Cheeze Whiz on it next time, I was unsure of it, so I chose provolone.
So. Much. Meat.
Tasty, hot and yummy. Bread was fresh, and meat was plentiful. I ordered with onions and mushrooms, and this was very good.
We also had wings (hotter.... they also have one call "fire in the hole" lol)
good stuff. I wanted to go back for their happy hour but we did not have time. Maybe next time.

Let me first say.. I have never had a cheese steak in Philly (the airport doesn't count), so by no means am I an expert on the topic.

My girlfriend and I went to Jake's for dinner... we each ordered the standard cheese steak... I opted for it 'wit whizz'.. she did provolone. Both were good, not amazing. I feel like I would have enjoyed it more if it was like 2am, and I was wasted out of my mind. We also had the waffle fries.. which were good, we got the basket, which huge... good for three people.

The service was ok, not overly friendly.

They had some solid brews on tap, with a couple of plasma's showing sports.

Overall impression...eh, alright.

I will probably go back again, but not anytime soon

Arguably the best cheese steak in the city.

2 Star a cheese steak that tastes like a cheese steak
1/2 star for having the Phillies game on and having all MLB Package.
1/2 star for "You Are in Eagles Country" banner.
1/2 star for having Tastykakes and "water ice."
1/2 Star for Happy Hour $3 big beers (not PBR).

If you have read my other reviews you know that I am from Philly and can be a tough critic of San Francisco cheese steaks.  Jake's Steaks is definitely worth checking out.

As a philly native I can say that Jake's has the best cheesesteak that I have tried so far in SF.  A cheesesteak being in its unadulterated form: an Amoroso roll, cheese whiz, and friend onions.  You can't beat the fact that you can follow your "whiz with" with a butter scotch krimpet and some italian water ice.

This place usually draws a good crowd of Philly natives for Eagle's games so if your a birds fan its worth checking out on Sunday.  Only thing holding this place back from a 5th star is some regular season Flyers coverage.

+2 stars for having a cool name and free wifi
-3 for ruining a perfectly good cheese steak with cheese wiz.

They must have had the B team on staff tonight because I was not impressed. Im kind of ashamed, actually, to share my name with this place. The one I had,the mushroom cheesteak (which apparently is Jake's favorite so naturally I had to get it) was bland as crap.

And who the eff uses cheese wiz as a topping? When she said wiz was an option, I thought it was a joke. But no, that vile filth that disgusted me when I was 9, was actually available to use in lieu of american or cheddar. More importantly though, how the hell did cheese wiz replace swiss on the menu? No swiss? FAIL.

Some nights when I was working at the hotel, I would order dinner from here. The cheese steaks were not bad, waffle fries were good but would get soggy if left out for too long and for some odd reason the ceasar salad was one of my "must order" items.

Delivery was always the way for me to get food and they would do so pretty quickly. But remember, eating all that food in one sitting will give you a very bad case of Food Coma.

Things I LOVE about Jake's Steaks:

1. GREAT cheesesteaks, whiz and all.
2. Service is USUALLY pretty good (there was this one night though, where I'm pretty sure they just hung up on me...oh well, I'll blame it on the moon.)
3. Nice, mellow location.
4. Nice soda ("pop") selection.

Things I hate about Jake's Steak:

5. I think all that cheez whiz gave me a tummy ache!

Salt is cheap.... use it...

The waffle fries had no salt on it.. flavorless.

The meat, to me, has been chopped up way too much, seemed more like ground beef consistency.  and again.. salt please.

For a great Philly Cheese Steak, look no further. I only give a 4 instead of a 5 because I had an ever-so slightly better cheese steak down in LA at Big Mike's. Otherwise, the cut of meat was good: not too fatty. The Cheez Whiz was just lovely (though I prefer the white American deli cheese you can get at Big Mike's in LA). And, it's a good walkable neighborhood (uh, San Francisco...) Yum!

Went here during the week for an impromptu dinner and we got there at a great time....it was nice a quiet. I have heard that this place can get packed.

We ordered:
Cheesesteak with Provolone and Onions
Pizza Steak
Garlic Fries
Onion Rings

All was delicious but I really preferred the Pizza Steak better. Not only was the flavor wonderful but having the marinara sauce on it kept it really moistt.
Garlic Fries were good but the hit of the dinner, to me was the Onion Rings.

I will be back, SOON!

First off, thanks to Elite Yelper Eileen H. for telling me about Jake's steaks.

Now, on to the facts:

- menu is not available online, our PC at work won't pull up the menu!
- Free delivery with $15 minimum purchase
- DAMN-cheesy-good-cheesesteaks. (redundant? I don't think so)
- order the cheesesteak original (with Cheez Whiz and onions -- don't worry about getting onion breath, these are well grilled enough, so it's really caramelized onions)
- you can have American, Swiss or Provolone cheese instead of Cheez Whiz
- did you know that Cheez Whiz is also used as a stain remover?? (I can hear the health nuts going "what!!!")

http://www.wisegeek.co...

Interesting Side notes:
- ordered the cheesesteak special with waffle fries and a coke for $10
- they forgot the soda upon delivery.  Yes, I called to remind them that.
- of course they had to come back just to deliver a can of soda.  With the generous $6 delivery tip, I expected them to!

Had Jake's this past Saturday night for about the 4th or 5th time since moving to San Francisco. I lived in Philly for 4 years and have had my fair share of Pat's, Gino's, and Jim's on South Street. They even have the Amorosa rolls! When I have those philly steak or chicken steak cravings I head here. Try a philly steak "wiz with"- aka w/ cheese wiz and onions! They even deliver but it is super easy for take out! There are tasty cakes for purchase at the register- the butterscotch krimpets are the best! I love the mural of boathouse row that is on the wall- makes me miss Philly. For all you Eagle fans- great place to watch the games in the fall! When the birds score- free green jello shots on the house. FLY EAGLES FLY!

Have given Jakes' Steaks three times to get it right and they haven't come through. Unseasoned and virtually flavorless meat (both chicken and beef) on a delicious Amoroso Roll. Also, beef is way to chopped up to call it a "cheesesteak". I gave them a third try today and not only did I get their usual unseasoned meat they couldn't even get my order (take out) right. Twelve inch cheesesteak American cheese no onions. I get my order see that the word American cheese is written on the foil only to open it up at home to find Provolone. C'mon guys screwing up such an easy order. Would customers in Philly put up with that?? So aside from the order f*** up try using a little salt when grilling the meat. It'll save the customer the trouble of having to salt each bite of their sandwich!

I went to Phat Philly yesterday, and yelped that after eating a very good sandwich there, Jake's was still the most authentic cheesesteak in town.

Then I went back to Jake's today to make sure I was telling the truth.

I was.  This place rocks.  Provolone and whiz with steak on a roll.  Hard to screw up, but also hard to do really well.  Jake's delivers, and they have just the sort of hard-edged, don't come into my store and order like a moron and waste my freaking time kind of attitude that the best cheesesteak places have in Philly.

One other plus - my pizzasteak + large cheese fries at Jake's = $13.  The same sandwich + onion rings + beer at Phat Philly = $20.55.  Either that beer cost me $7 (in which case, dude, seriously), or I paid a ton extra for fancy cheese sauce.

I must say, Jake's Steaks is a very clean and well kept restaurant.

But Cheez Wiz on your Philly?? Hmm...I'm not so sure. Despite the fact that it was reallyyyyyyyyyy cheesey, it tasted very very processed. I did have their Pizza Philly and their marinara sauce on it is a BIT on the tangy side but still good. Mozarella sticks were decent, and their waffle fries lacked flavor. Next time, I'm going to ask for garlic waffle fries -- perhaps that'll be better. Oh and I have to add, the bread they used for their sandwiches is AMAZING. Soft, somewhat chewy, and delicious. Mmm...

The bf's younger brother said "I think I like Great Steak better...that place in all the malls..."

Perhaps I'll give Jake's Steaks another go sometime in the future but for now, I have to try other places -- like Phat Philly on 24th in the Mission District.

yeah, sorry we wont deliver to the geographical center of the city, that's out of our area. The City is 7x7?

How is that too far? are you walking the sandwiches to my house? It's a 7 minute drive!

The funny part is I had them deliver to fell st. at a friends house. So yeah, you are a bunch of Liars, just say your busy, or it's gonna take a while don't be a bunch of liars who lie.

This place has some SUPER Phillly Cheesesteaks. I'm definitely not from Philly, I've been a loyal go-to'er of The Cheesesteak Shop, but can I just say that this place probably reigns #1 in SF now?

I had the 8" Philly Hoagie......no frills, just with onions.....It came out with beef and cheese overflowing from the top. The sides were shooting out cheese and beef too! One bite....and it's just sheer goodness.

I was actually contemplating whether or not to buy one for dinner....or keep one in my bag for later. AMAZING.

I was waiting in a line of 3-4 people to order a cheesesteak for the first time at Jake's.  To my astonishment the cashier got through all of them in literally under 40 seconds and next thing I know shes waiting for my order.  Since I was not ready at all I asked her for a recommendation and she quickly said "Mushroom Cheesesteak".  Fair enough, i like mushrooms so let go with that.  Next question.. "regular or large?"  Not sure why I said large? maybe it was because I was really hungry, or just felt I needed to makeup for my utter confusion before. But I figured I would eat half and take the rest home for tomorrow.
So I waited at the bar, and within minutes I was given a cheesesteak the size of my forearm.  FOR SURE I was taking some home.  I started on my 1st half, and it was increadible!  Very juicy, great quality meat, and good mushroom flavor to top it off; the bun could have been better tho.
I finished the half in no time and started eyeing the other half.   Ok so I wont be a complete pig and Ill just eat half of the 2nd half.  Before I knew it, I had stuffed the entire thing in my stomach and was experiencing one the more enjoyable food comas ever.  The short walk home wasnt as enjoyable but well worth the satisfaction.

Waffle fries are a bit greasy, but hey you're eating french fries eh?

I dont get people who rate this kinda places 2 stars, I mean I get it, taste differs but come on, you're going to a cheesesteak place, not ritz carlton 4 dish signature dinner.

I just love local places like this and they do a very good job with fast service, delicious cheesesteaks and most of all, THEY DELIVER!!

You can order your cheese-steak with the following choices:

chicken or steak
onions or no onions
choice of cheeses (including cheese whizz!)
choice of sweet or spicy peppers

The result is a delicious amazing melt in your mouth cheese-steak sandwich!

It's a small place with a little counter, and a few seats along the wall and maybe a few tables outside. Casual inside, with TVs to show whatever sports games are in season.

I like the place alot even though the cheese-steaks were good, they weren't my favorite, prob because I chose cheese-whiz out of curiosity despite not being a cheese-whiz fan. Next time I will go with my gut and try what i really want.

Cheese and meat, can't go wrong for me!

Esp in this case, we came after the Chocolate Salon at Fort Mason and needed some grease to drag us out of the chocolate coma we were in.

Walked from Fort Mason here after the SF Chocolate Salon because I needed something to cleanse my palate from all the free chocolate samples.

The traditional cheesesteak, all 12 inches of with cheese Whiz and onions was fabulous.  I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to finish an entire footlong, but it was great. I didn't get a chance to try any of the friees but the Garlic fries looked really good.

Go with the cheese whiz!

First the obligatory yes, I'm from Philly.  And everyone there argues just as much over which hoagie shop has the best cheesesteak.  As far as San Francisco goes- this is as close as it gets and damn good, too.
If I lived any closer to Jake's I'd be 20 lbs. heavier.
They have Tastykakes, too. Mmmmmm.  Peanut butter Kandykakes are the cat's meow.  Truly.
Don't bother with the water ice.  They give you a teeny bit in a condiment cup.  Italian ice back east is bigger and oh so much better.

I'm craving a cheesesteak right now.  If only I could find a decent Italian hoagie out here.

I should lead off this review with the disclaimer that we received the food via delivery on V-day...however, I dont think the issues I had with the dishes are based on things that would have been different had I eaten on-site.

The BF and I were enjoying a lazy day watching TV and recuperating from our exploits of the night before (see Buck Tavern review to be posted soon). In this state, cheesesteaks and buffalo wings are almost always a great way to satiate what feels like a bottomless hunger for fatty spicy food (see review of Original Buffalo Wings based on New Year's day delivery - also to be posted shortly).

We ordered and the food arrived in a timely fashion, still appropriately warm. The "whiz with" cheesesteak was "satisfactory" as an earlier review read. Certainly not my favorite, and not terrible either. A little on the boring side.

However, the buffalo wings left everything to be desired. There was a choice of Mild, Hot, Hotter and Fire in the Hole. We ordered "Hot" and ended up dousing them in Frank's Red Hot after one bite, which still didn't help the taste. They were mild, bland and overcooked. Gross. Though I may stop in from time to time for a cheesesteak if I'm in the area, I'm definitely staying away from the buffalo wings.

these are no wimpy sandwiches, though i've had better.  i wish that they were just a bit better, and when i mean better i'm talking the meat.

it's all about the meat at this point. the cheese is good, the bun, and the fries. but the meat was just not quite there.
