Having been a pretty loyal fan of Jay's Cheesesteaks, I finally got around to trying out the somewhat legendary Jake's Steaks last week. Not surprisingly, there are no frills here, you order at the counter and after a few long minutes, your piping hot sandwich arrives.
And arrive it does: grilled shredded beef and onion piled onto an imported amoroso roll from Philly. Cheese Whiz that just melts into everything. I like to add some pepper. Wash it down with an ice cold soda and you begin to understand why this place has such a cult following. Yeah, I might just be a believer.

Just moved to my new place, and right in front of my place, there is a cheesesteak place! NOt only that, They serve beer and have bigger TV (than mine:) Cheesesteak was good..meaty...heavy...FULL! Chicken tender was great...all white meat...i love it!
Oh why oh why does all ridiculously yummy food have to be soooo BAD for you??? Life is truly cruel! LOL!
I'm definitely a fan of the famous Jake's Steaks! I got the chicken philly with whiz (yes that's CHEESE WHIZ), mushrooms and onions. Pretty much it was a plate of messy heaven. What's not to LOVE? I was also able to try the garlic fries and (embarrassed to admit) the onion rings! So if you pretty much want a meal to stock up for winter...Jakes Steaks is the way to go!
They deliver and leftovers reheat really well (uh, I heard)! LOL

I can't help but compare this place to the Cheese Steak Shop on Divisadero. It's just not nearly as good. I've tried the different cheese options, and I unabashedly think the Cheese Wiz is inferior. Maybe if I grew up going to Pat's in Philly I would feel different, but I didn't.
There's just a funky taste about their cheese steaks. It's like they're grilling with almond oil...
Cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeez Whizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Pleazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!
On a Sunday afternoon when you are hungover and disoriented and extremely, and I do mean EXTREMELY hungry, nothing could have been more satisfying than a greasy, cheez whizzy steak from Jake's.
I went with the 8" with whizzzzzzzzzzz and a basket of garlic fries. With 2 cans of Dr. Pepper. It totally hit the spot. TOTALLY. The bread was nice and soft too. I wonder if it's amoroso's bread? If it is, kudos to Jake.

Cheese steak sambo is delicious. So are the chicken tenders. Any place that can master those two food items wins my vote.
I prefer the cheese steak with Provolone but the cheese whiz is good too. I have to admit i was reluctant to try cheese whiz on a sandwich since the last time i ate cheese whiz was circa 1994 but Jake's surprised me.
Love that the deliver too...$15 minimum
Check out the update.

Oh my god these guys are awesome! I would have never known they were in the neighborhood if my BF, a Philly native himself who is addicted to this place, hadn't found them years ago. The shop is tucked away on a side street away from major foot traffic so it's mostly locals here.
For $10 you can get a Philly with waffle fries and a can of soda. Portions are large enough to split with a friend even if he happens to be a linebacker! Their cream cheese jalapeno poppers are fresh and run $5 for a basket of 6 to 7 (these are to die for). Beer is on tap, two flat screen televisions, and the restroom has a speaker so you don't miss anything while taking care of business :) The place has a dive bar feel to it but the staff keeps the place clean.
Very very good cheese steak with cheez whizzz. Extra cheeese on top please!!! Oh man....i want more already! Thanks he-man....definitely a place I didnt know about.

Ordered delivery from them again and again, they were on time and the quality was excellent. Tried it with Provolone cheese this time and it's equally as good as the cheese whiz (which is also good). My friend is like absolutely in love with this place, I'm just worried about our health LOL.
The one issue I do have though is either the phone or the person answering the phone. It was very difficult to hear the person clearly, I highly doubt it was the person as they seem to speak English just fine, so I'm guessing it's the phone or it may have been on my end.
Either way, I highly recommend this place at least once to try for yourself and they deliver too, so that's another great reason =).

The purdy sign led me to this joint off of Lombard. I originally thought it was some steak-house place, but was shocked to learn it was a cheese-steak place. Notice the blatant omission of Philly, as these sandwiches are far from resembling or tasting like anything from Philly. The star of the sandwich is supposed to be the beef. But when you start off with some poor grade of beef as your base, no amounts of cheese, onions, peppers, etc. can help it. The beef tasted old and kinda rubbery. It definitely was not rib-eye. I'll be sticking to the Cheese Steak Shop when I need my fix.

Well I should probably eat here again before I write this review...I had just come from the Family Winemakers Tasting...so after 4 hours of drinking wine perhaps anything would taste good. That being said we had the hottest of the chicken wings and they were prepared well but they lacked any flavour just had serious heat. Fries were good nice and crisp. We shared the with whiz steak sammie. Good meat, juicy. I've never had the real deal holyfield so can't compare it to Philly...but solid. I like the sports bar feel to it as well.

For what it is, it's great, absolutely hits the spot when you want a greasy, cheesy, bundle of heart attack with minimal veggies, although they do give you a lettuce and pickle or pepper.
I got the mushroom with provolone cheese steak sandwich and a basket of the waffle fries with wizz. OMG, so damn good. those fries are also something just cause they are drenched in cheeze wizz and are crispy. the pricing is also really good too and you should just not even think about the size difference between the small and large since its only like $2 difference in the end to get a large. To my amazement, i actually finished it all. At first i thought i'd have something to snack on later, but once you start eating, munchin on some cheesy fries, you can't stop, until you're finally done and feel a lil tight around the waist with your pants.
This is also making me take interest in exploring more restaurants in the marina area. you just gotta love SF!

The second best steak in San Francisco, after The Cheese Steak Shop on Divisadaro. They've definitely stepped their game up; the first time I went here they committed blasphemy by putting mayo on the steak. Thankfully, they've wised up, and now offer a damn good sandwich. On top of that they have waffle fries. The combo (sandwich, waffle fries, drink) is a deal. Better atmosphere than TCSS, and usually less crowded. No complaints, but not quite #1.
I got the 8 inch Mushroom Cheesesteak with the Whiz and onions. The sandwich did hit the spot but it was nothing spectacular. Maybe it was the whiz drowning out the rest of the sandwich, but the onions, mushrooms and meat could of had more flavor.
The bread was nice and soft and the sandwich overall was decent. Nothing that was knock your socks off based from the reviews.

The best lazy, indulgent food right up the street from my house...when it's cold and rainy, I order and pick up from Jake's. Service is fast and great. Their waffle fries, onion rings, Caesar salad, veggie cheese steak and pizza cheese steak are all excellent.

I originally stumbled upon Jake's because I was looking for a place that had buffalo wings and delivered. Jake's fit the bill, and I've been pleased with every order since then.
The buffalo wings aren't amazing, but they're decent. And I can't really knock the place for their wings since no one else in the city does wings properly either. It's a damn shame.
The name's not Jake's Wings though, and the real winner is their cheesesteak w/whiz. The 8" with a side of garlic fries can't be beat. And I'll toss 'em a few extra points for rocking the waffle fries - good stuff.

Mm... great steaks, great wings. I love this place.
Perfect for curing that saturday morning hangover while watching Big10 football. The first time I went, there was a couple of guys who got a batch of the fire in the hole, man did they fall apart. It was a wonderous site.
Good stuff--I get delivery from here on the regular.
Get the big cheesesteak whiz with and you'll have plenty for lunch tomorrow. The waffle cut fries are good and survive delivery ok.
Caution: eating Jake's with beer late at night will make your car smell something awful the next day, especially on a rainy day with the windows rolled up. You've been warned.

I've never been to City of Brotherly Love but here's what I know about it.
- Will Smith The Fresh Prince of Bel Air
- Rocky
- Cream Cheese
- The Liberty Bell
- The Eagles! (Randall Cunningham, Reggie White)
- The Phillies (Mike Schmidt, Lenny Dykstra, and of course Pete Rose.)
- Cheese Steaks!
With my limited knowledge, I can comfortably tell you that Jakes Steaks has the best cheese steaks in SF. Their chili cheese fries will rock your socks off.
Go try their cheese steaks, chili fries, and one of their beers on tap. Watch a game. Or just enjoy the sun at one of their outdoor tables.
That is all.

It doesn't taste like an authentic Philly cheese steak to me, more like a California style Philly cheese steak but then again I wouldn't know an authentic one, if it hit me on the back of the head.
What I do know, is that these are some very tasty steak sandwiches.
Its so delicious you might close your eyes as you devour it.
I met Jake while at School in Penn in the mid 90's. He brought to San Francisco a great piece of Philadelphia the Cheese steak. A few months after opening, his wife became pregnant and Jake had to sell. The cheese steaks after that began to have a peculiar after taste. The taste of Bok choi. What can I say, I love cheese steaks.
I know nothing about cheese steaks. The closest I've been to a real Philly cheese steak is the Philadelphia airport food court during a layover a couple years ago. And it was horrible.
But I do love me some Jake's Steaks. I don't really do shredded beef of any sort so I stick with the chicken cheese steak. Whiz with, of course. It's just about the most delicious, cheesiest, chickeny creation I've ever tasted. The best part is that regardless of whether I do take out or delivery, my cheese steak is always still piping hot in that silver wrapper when I bite into it on my couch. Their waffle fries are an added bonus. Yummy in my tummy.

This is pretty much as close to the real deal you can get in San Francisco, AND THEY DELIVER. Fresh Amoroso rolls, wiz or real American cheese (the white kind), and sub-grade beef chopped up finely and seasoned well.
Additional pluses- they have legit. water ice pronounced "wooder ice" and crispy waffle fries.
For sports fans they have Eagles and Phillies dine-in events which seem fun for sports fans and they'll serve you a big tall beer in a frosty mug. Check their site for more info for events:
http://www.jakessteaks...
Additionally the joint is owned by a Philly native and has the trimmings and decor to honor the City of Brotherly Love. Oars from boat house row and Eagles and Philly memorabilia.
If you're a Philly fanatic for cheese steaks, you go here.

Well, it's hard to compare to the real cheese steaks from Philly, 'cause you can't beat em. The rolls were good. Jake's serves Amarosa rolls from the East Side. There was a lot of meat (a little dry and a little chewy), very little grilled onions (onions are cheap, give me mo' onions!), and sharp prov (that was good). I thought the cheese steaks were small, but that's only because Philly servings are a little bit bigger than the Cali servings. I got the $10 special: cheese steak, waffle fries, and a soda.
I'd go back. I'd order the larger cheese steak and request more grilled onions. The waffle fries weren't all that. So I'd pass on those...
best cheesesteak in the city and they deliver. nothing like eating a greasy cheesesteak without having put on pants. what can i say, i am lazy

This place is kinda cheesy and definitely a tad overpriced. The veggie philly is more expensive than a regular philly... how does that work? The veggie one also has a lot of strange stuff that shouldn't necessarily be in a philly sandwich such as cauliflower and carrots... don't get me wrong because I really like both of those things and veggies in general but they're a little strange in a sandwich... a wrap I can see but a philly roll? Otherwise, good location and the waffle fries were especially yummy.
Worth checking out if you're in the mood for a philly but there's probably better places out there.

The cheesesteaks are good. I agree with other reviewers that the meat is on the dry side. However, they still make very good sandwiches and I really enjoyed it. The mushrooms are canned though, which is a bummer. The portions are very generous and I like how the prices include tax. What you see is what you pay! You can get a tasty filling meal here for $10 including a drink.
I felt the best part of my meal were the sides. The waffle fries here are fantastic! They have the perfect crisp texture and stay warm and unsoggy for the duration of your meal. The onion rings are terrific as well! Perfectly fried and not too much batter. They come with a side of ranch - yea! I was a little surprised they had canned sodas vs. fountain drinks though.
The staff is very friendly and I had no service issues at all. They were speedy and great at multi-tasking (juggling phone orders and busing tables).
The restaurant is pretty small with some seating at the bar, about 4-5 tables inside, and some tables out on the sidewalk. There are TVs showing various games. I loved the mural on the back wall. The large windows give the place a lot of light and an airy feel to the restaurant.
Overall, I really liked Jake's and would definitely be back - especially for the waffles fries and onion rings.

I grew up in South Jersey about a 20 minute ride outside of Philly. I know my way around cheesesteak joints and let's leave it at that.
What can I say about this place....big pile of chuck steak on the grill? check. amoroso rolls? check. regular or cheese whiz? check. beer and big screen tv? check. waffle fries? check. hot peppers? check. Enough grease drip out the back of my sando? check. Pure goodness in every bite??? CHECK!

Cheese Whiz and steak is all you really need to know. Me and my bro do Cheese Steak Tuesdays (CST for short) and have tried just about every cheese steak shop in the city. We have agreed that Jake's is definitely by far our favorite. Its really odd that this place is in the marina but still. If they could could maybe relocate somewhere on Divis near the other two steak shops in the NOPA area, that would be great, thanks.

Cheesesteaks here is good.....soft bread...amoroso roll .. that what they call..... We had a Firehole wings! just to warn you.....don't even think about trying....... just go for Hotter....It's perfect!
When I ordered he asked me if I would like it 8 inches or 12 inches and I laughed. Then he blushed.
I thoroughly enjoyed my 8 inches of hot beef. I still prefer getting it at The Cheese Steak Shop though.

Pretty tasty. I'd definitely go back when I need my cheesesteak fix. I'm not sure what a 5 start cheesesteak tastes like though. I got mine 'whiz with' (with cheez whiz and onions) ... pretty good. The cheese could have been a bit tastier though. I think next time I'll try either American or provolone ... yum.
Definitely worth checking out if you like a beefy sandwich.
Whiz, get your cheesesteak with Whiz.
I've had cheesesteaks from here several times and I have never been disappointed. I like my cheesesteak a bit spicy so I get the Hot Cherry Peppers which are always perfect. Just thinking about this food makes me wants to order some. Their waffle fries are always nice and crispy.
If you eat at their shop you can possibly catch a game on their flat screen TV. Also you can grab a brew to compliment your food, they have a couple of nice beers on draught.
Basically, if you're looking for a very flavorful meal get a Jakes Steak... though be prepared for your food coma afterwards... but since they deliver you can be at home for this part.

We were pleasantly surprised! Tasty cheese steaks with american cheese (no whiz wit, that shit is for suckers) delivered to us by a guy in a phillies t hahaha.
Overall verdict, pretty legit. I wish they had yuengling though!

Philly cheesesteaks huh? In CALIFORNIA?
Ehhhh... iono about that ... thing is, even though i've been to philly, i don't recall what it tasted like... but anyways, a cheesesteak SALAD? Ooo weee .. I guess I could cheat a bit and eat salad and kinda fool my tummy thinking it's eating some greens ..
anyways, I hate to say it, but it wasn't that great ...
on an ugly, rainy night, we decided to stay in and have a blockbuster night watching movies all night long.. wasn't really digging the ordinary Chinese delivery or none of that pizza crap, so we shared a $8 cheesesteak salad .. the salad wasn't fresh and the meat was just whatevers... south street in westwood is better ...
what a disappointment. i'll try to come back for the cheesesteak sandwich next time.
