OK, I'm disappointed in the quality of the reviews that Jake's has been getting, because as a local this is one of my favorite places to eat (keep in mind that we typically go during happy hour or special occasions). Hands-down they have a fantastic happy hour menu and I usually will order the "fish of the day", but the Udon is the best that I've found in Tahoe. Some evening they will have local musical talents perform. They also do a great St. Patrick's Day dinner with Irish music and bag-pipers.

For apps we like the poke rolls and fried artichoke hearts. The sauce that the poke rolls come with is just delicious and is great for dipping bread in. Of course, they serve the famous Hula Pie, which requires at least two people to eat. Be prepared to fight for the chocolate cookie crust!!!

So, if your looking for a good place to eat in Tahoe City please consider Jake's on the Lake.

The good-The atmosphere here is killer.  We were seated at a table with a view which was very romantic.  That's where the good ends.

    The average-Service was ok.

The bad-The food was awful.  For our starter, we ordered clam chowder.  It was orange (wtf?), salty and it tasted like it came out of a can. For our main course, we ordered New York steak and it came with vegetables, potatoes, and some sort of dark brown gravy (I think), with mushrooms ( I hope they were mushrooms).  The steak was bland, the vegetables tasted like frozen vegetables from a bag, and the potatoes tasted like they came out of a box.  FIRE THE "CHEF." My eight year old son could have made a better meal than that.

Luckily, we received a gift certificate from our hotel which covered a majority of the bill.  I would have been ticked had I paid $90.00 out of my own pocket.

Giving it 3 stars for the view of Lake Tahoe from the balcony.

The staff was friendly, but service was a bit slow. We sat on the deck for the view.  It was a cool day, but they did not turn on the multiple heaters on the deck.  A lot of people moved into the sun.  We kept our jackets on in the shade.

The food was OK.  We went during "bar hours," which meant a somewhat limited menu.  We shared calamari, which was served in large chunks, like fish sticks.  The dipping sauce was good.  We also had fish tacos. The fish was freshly grilled, but not too flavorful.

All in all, a bit pricey for what we got, but the view was nice.

Well , this place has an awesome location and atmosphere. The service for me was fine , no major wait and I felt attended to. I ordered the Tuna rolls and I enjoyed them very much. You do pay for the view of the lake but that's being a tourist

As expected the view was wonderful.  Service was fairly slow and the lunch choices that we ordered were average.  The reason we gave this restaurant a try was because from the Sunnyside website it looks like it is owned by the same company as Duke's Waikiki which my wife and I really enjoyed.

Made reservations for Christmas dinner here. They seated us in the bar area which was not the best place for kids with all the traffic.  The entire restaurant only has round tables. It's a little difficult for larger groups.  Maybe our server was new but we had to get up and go get him for service a couple of times.  We ordered the prix fixe traditional Xmas dinner.  We needed a lot of gravy to make up for the dry and bland turkey and mashed potatoes. The green beans and candied yam were good. The bread was hot and tasty. But how could the holiday meal not come with any pies?

I always come to jakes when i am in Lake Tahoe, this place is awesome, I loved the service, the waiters are friendly, the food is flavorful and the atmosphere is fun. This is a great place for groups, but I suggest making a reservation especially on the weekends. I was there again last weekend with some friends from San Diego and they absolutely loved the food.  Not to mention the view of the lake. ;)

Went in last weekend for a quick bite and a drink, ordered the poke rolls and they were fantastic....we sat at the bar and the red haired bartender was great, fun to talk to, but not ignoring other guests....prices were fair and the views are awesome.  Thanks for a nice time Jakes.

Man, was I in for a treat! I'd been to Jake's a couple of times as a kid with my parents, but can't remember much about it, as I was all of 13 years old. I returned with my fiancee this fall/winter to see if we could find some snow, and ended up eating at Jake's our first night by chance, and boy were we happy to have surrendered to chance.....

The view (as expected) was great, having been seated right by a window, but the food and service were truly exceptional. Our sever was friendly, knowledgeable, and very attentive. I ordered the blue cheese burger, and was floored at how much I liked it. More flavor than any burger I've eaten in years, and I eat a lot of burgers! My fiancee, who has a gluten allergy, mentioned to our server that there are some things she cannot eat, and was ecstatic that the kitchen was able to modify certain items to meet her needs. A lot of restaurants seem put out when this comes up, but not Jake's. This was a huge plus for us.

Basically, it couldn't have been better, so thank you Jake's! We will be back!

Crabcakes = hands-down some of the best stuff I've had!  I would've loved to have it for a dinner entree....

Seafood chowder...delicious! Chock full of seafood, savory bits, seasoning, creamy and it's gotta KICK!

Garlic bread, to die for!  Tabletop bread is good too, but ask for garlic bread if you really want something divinely scrumptious! ;-)

    Service = fabulous, as always.

Hula pie...as always, SHARE.  It's meant for sharing...trust me!  Even if you really want to eat it all, don't try.   It's not dessert, it's a moat!

Over the years, I've eaten here several times, and I've always lucked out and have had an amazing time.

Sunday was a perfect, summery sunny Tahoe day, and we decided to enjoy a relaxing early lunch on the lake here at Jake's.  We sat out on the deck and soaked in the stunning views.  Service by our waitress was very good - she was friendly without being intrusive, paid attention to what we needed, and seemed to be on top of her game.

For an appetizer, we had the ahi tuna poke roll, small but beautifully done.  My friend from Ireland slurped up his clam chowder in less than 5 minutes.  "That was beautiful!" he beamed.  He devoured his seafood caesar salad, while I finished off my linguini with clams.  The garlic bread they served with the pasta was divine, though the sauce could have used a tad more garlic and flavor.

As always, with busy Tahoe restaurants, I recommend coming early and taking your time and just kicking back.

Very nice atmosphere, friendly staff, and the food is very tasty. I am visiting Tahoe from the SoCal area and a friend told me to check this place out. Our waiter was friendly and attentive to what we needed and always checking to see if everything was going ok. We had some appetizers and for our entrees we got the fish of the day (which was sea bass) and filet mignon. Both were outstanding. The filet was very tender and the bass was prepared nicely. Some might say the service is on the slower side, but i thought their timing was good because it allows you to relax and enjoy the scenery and the atmosphere. Next time I come up to the Tahoe area, i will definitely be coming back.

Being a huge hula pie fan ever since I sank my teeth into a piece in Maui, making the 3 1/2 hour trek became an annual event for us.  Although no longer part of the TS Restaurant group, they thankfully still serve the decadent 3 inch ice cream covered with fudge and mac nuts all over an oreo cookie bottom that is perfect for 2 people to enjoy on their patio on a nice sunny day.

Somewhere in there we did order the fresh fish and pulled pork sandwich that was also good but not good enough to not save some room for dessert.

I had lunch here and let me tell ya they know how to make you a killer burger or turkey sandwich on dutch crunch bread.   The food and service was great and I plan on going back often.  I can't wait to try dinner here next time as the menu offered so many great choices.

I totally recommend stopping by for great food and a breathtaking view of the lake.

Went here last night with a party of 12. Six kids, six adults. We made reservations in advance. The service was horrible. The waiter was clueless and made many mistakes with our meals, and made ridiculous excuses for all of them. It took 1/2 hour to take our order. And it took close to to an hour to receive our food. It seems like this place doesn't do well with large parties.

Thank God all the kids behaved great. But they were tired of waiting and starving. Most restaurants know that when there are kids, you need to serve them quickly or at least in a decent amount of time...not an hour later.

The waiter seemed oblivious, and had an arrogance about him. When we told the manager, he was sort of apologetic but again, didn't seem really phased by it. At the end they served us 2 large desserts on the house. But don't they know that we really didn't want to stay there any longer?

The kitchen needs to work much faster to bring out the food. And the waiter needs to step it up if he plans on working there for awhile.

    Definitely not going back!

Try Sunnyside Resort/Restaurant instead.  We had an amazing meal and terrific service....and a gorgeous view of the lake.

Great view. Mediocre food at best.

Jake's is located in the Boatworks Mall right on the water. Has a fabulous view, but food is meh.

I recommend sitting in the bar and ordering a drink. You still get the great view of the lake and don't have to order food unless you want to.

Hubby and I sat out on the deck and had clam chowder that was a bland semi-creamy soup that tasted more like onion bisque. Not much substance to it and not even sure I ever saw a clam.

Burger was dry and not really worth mentioning.

Service was fine but again, it's all about the view.

Well here is another place I have been going to for years, but really only because it is close to where I usually stay on the north shore.  I have noticed over the last few years that the food (and service) have slid, and on a recent visit I am dismayed to report that trend has not reversed.

The bar scene here is active (and very noisy) and the views of the marina and lake are outstanding.  Unfortunately the food and service does not come anywhere near the setting.  Servers range from rude to inattentive and unless you are a personal friend you need to set yourself on fire to get their attention.  Main courses generally arrive medium warm to cold and the presentations are nothing to speak off.  I ordered two medallions of beef medium-rare.  One was medium-well and the other rare, so I guess on average it works out? The giant lump of mashed potatoes was nothing more inspired than a heaping pile of... starch.

Go for a drink and nab one of the tables by the window.  If you are hungry... there is a McDonald's just down the street.

Went there for a saturday night dinner, and as we expected on a warm summers evening the place was packed. We got a seat at the bar/kitchen and were served a great Calamari appetizer by the chef. He was extremely personable, and was never too busy to engage in good conversation.
We got a table after about 30 minutes and were seated outside. Because of the abundance of pesky mosquitos, we asked to move inside which was absolutely no bother to the host, and we got a great table in a private little cove overlooking the lake.
The food was excellent. I ordered a steak which was succulent and cooked to medium rare perfection. The service was quick and extremely friendly.  It was expensive, but if you want the spectacular views, delicious food and great service, then you should expect to pay top dollar. Will definitely return next time we're in Tahoe City.

Jake's is a busy place.  I don't know how to explain it but it always feels that there is just a lot of movement in this restaurant. All of the workers move about like ants.  (It makes me want to suggest a restaurant redesign with a better foot traffic flow)  Because of that fact and the noise, it doesn't feel like the type of place that you can just sit and relax.

That being said though, the food is decent. Slightly overpriced.  Becoming an ahi tuna regular, I had the seared ahi special.  It wasn't bad but wasn't noteworthy either.

The service wasn't bad either.  And even though it was busy, they didn't mind that we just sat there for a while and enjoyed the evening.  We'll probably go back there again sometime, the view of the lake makes all the annoyances seem little.  But its not really on my list of places to go back and eat at before I die.

I came here for New Year's 2010.  After scouring Tahoe for some sort of big party (that didn't involve crossing the border and going to a casino), we ended up at Jake's.

We saddled up to the bar and grabbed some grub and drinks.  The food was surprisingly delicious, and cooked right in front of us.  Our server, Aaron, was fantastic.  I usually don't mention a server's name in a review, but he did a great enough job that I made sure to remember it.  The drinks were strong, and the crowd was fun.

I'm not in the Tahoe area, but if I were to drive through again, Jake's would be on my list of spots to stop by.

Summer destination when you just want to hang out for the afternoon and enjoy the lake.  Phenomenal views!

Really slow service, combined with high prices, don't make me happy.  Hence, the three stars.

What's happenin......in Tahoe City on a weekend night (Friday/Saturday).....this sleepy lakeside town can rock (no, not an earthquake)......if, as for us, the night-goers flock to Jake's (or other proximate watering holes (Christy Hill, Wolfdales, Fat Cat, River Grill, Bridgetender).

"We" were invited to wrap our earlier-evening dinner night at Jake's. Upon our arrival (at/about 10 pm) - the scene was elbow to elbow - but we were curiously able to find a circular table (seating for 4) proximate to the bar. Actually, we shared our table with several others who had decided to visit Jakes and had cabbed-it from Incline Village.

A duet (combo) provided live audibles.....a nice touch for all, I trust.

Bar prices and bar service were/are reasonable. Nothing complicated in ordering/enjoying a tapper or a martini.  One of the bartenders is "Montana"........he goes with 'the fixtures'......he probably date's from the opening of Jake's since (about) 1975 or so.....hmmmm.

WE had a great time......maybe it's just our/your frame of mine or mind-mood.  Hope you will too.

Worst hostesses ever! We showed up 10 minutes early for our reservation, to be told rather rudely to come back in 15. We got a drink at the bar, came back at our "real" reservation time to be told that they were busy and we'd have to wait. I used to be a waitress...and customer service is key. We ended up waiting an extra 30 minutes to be sat from our actual reservation time. This is not a big deal -- but comp SOMETHING, ANYTHING. Especially a drink. It goes a long way.

The apps were mediocre at best, the main was pretty good, and the dessert felt like it had been cut from some mountain of ice cream cake in the freezer with chocolate sauce poured on top -- nothing to write home about.

Location was great, fireworks (the reason we were there) were pretty fun, won't be going back to the restaurant unless dragged.

I don't know what is going on with Tahoe restaurants but it seems they have been steadily going down hill for years. Just plain poor value. There are still a few places we eat, like Steamers for pizza and the Firesign for breakfast. Jake's is not one of them. Believe every negative recent review you read about them.

Used to love this place. Been going for 15 years but our last meal here was sub-par at best. It just seems like they don't care. Service pretty good but food just bad. Ordered a steak cooked medium and it came out raw and I'm not exaggerating so we just asked for a little more heat, no big deal. The steak came back, at least with fresh sides, but burned to a crisp on the outside and bloody pink on the inside. Another person at our table had gnocchi and the gnocchi still tasted frozen. We were a party of 4 and they messed up 2 meals, sorry Jake's we wont come back until you change your chef

We had a great lunch here.  The food was tasty, and priced at what I would expect given the location.  We had a heirloom tomato sandwich and a chicken sandwich.  The chicken was good enough, but the tomato was what really stole the show--delicious and nicely balanced with the other sandwich toppings.

Some of the reviews here indicate the service is bad--perhaps we were just lucky, but our waitress was very friendly and attentive.  Over all, the next time  I am in Tahoe City I will definitely consider returning to Jake's for a lunch with a fantastic view.

This place really needs a range of review for various aspects:

    5 stars - the view
    4 stars- service
3.5 stars - Seafood derby buffet only $18!

The view of the lake is simply amazing. We came here on Sunday for brunch around 11:30 a.m. and we just missed the breakfast menu but we were openly offered the seafood derby buffet since we happened to be visiting during their annual fishing derby.
It was great to sit on the patio and see all the fishermen come in with their catches...
The drinks (mimosas and bloody marys) were good and strong but the food that came with the buffet was just ok...given that it was only $18 it was a deal!
Definitely enjoyed lunching here and will come again to enjoy the views and maybe try out items from their menu.

Meh is the right word for Jake's on the Lake. We came here with a party of 7 and we were all disappointed. The view's of Lake Tahoe are unmatched, but that's about all the appeal this place has.
The Fried Artichoke Hearts were greasy, and did not taste like anything beyond the crumbs it was breaded with.
The Buttermilk and Panko Chicken Sandwich tasted like something they bought from the McDonald's down the street and put tomato chutney on it, which admittedly could taste good. Except it wasn't. The soup of the day was Potato-Leek, and one of our party said it tasted like moderately liquid mashed potatoes. No thanks.
The service wasn't terrible. Despite how busy it was, our waiter listened to specific requests and was patient. So there's another half star.
All in all, I wouldn't recommend this place to a friend. The view of Lake Tahoe does not make up for the disgusting food.

After a long trip up to the Tahoe City area from the Bay Area, my honey and I joined my best friend and her husband for late meal before the rest of our friends were able to join us at the cabin.

It looked to be a busy night - filled both with the casual person (like our group) and the suit/tie kind of guy (private party in the level above us). We had to wait about 25-30 minutes since we didn't have reservations, but was perfect for us since we had a late lunch on the way up the mountain.

Once seated outside - overlooking Lake Tahoe - under heat lamps, our waitress got our drink orders and we looked over the menu. It was hard to look at the menu since the lighting was so dim, but with the help of the iPhone flashlight app, I was able to peruse the menu.

Everything looked yummy, but I ended up ordering a blue cheese & bacon burger - served with fries. I just ate the patty and some of the fries (bf ate the rest ). The tanginess of the blue cheese and the salty bacon made for a good combination. I was left full :)

Two others in our party ordered the yummy chicken pot pie - delish flaky crust and another ordered the Idaho Trout - funny thing is that its from Idaho and not from the lake :)

I would definitely come back here for a nice dinner - it even had tv screens going, showing football and baseball games.

    Cheers!

Visit: 1/23/10 - Lunch.  Burger, Chicken sandwich and chowder.

I would give better rating, but our server was clearly racist.  We were the only non-caucasians in the place and we received the worst service.  Even the group next to us with 2 kids making a bunch of noise and messing the place up got better service.   There was another caucasian couple next to us, around the same age and they got great service.  I was listening.

    Burger was okay.

Chicken sandwich was very unique.  They breaded the chicken filet with panko and used foccacia bread.  Very good I thought.

The chowder was really good.  If I had another bowl, I would have forgave the server for her negative vibes.

Serivce was terrible.  Server did not let us know of the specials.  Did not refill water or soda (which they charge $.50 a refill).  People came in after us and got their food right away.  Our server ignored us.  Most people left and we were still trying to flag her down for our check.

Price is high for burgers and sandwiches.  But hay we are on vacation.

View of the lake is very good.  Don't forget to go up stairs to observation deck.  Even better view.

I would not come back.  I am still offended by this server.

This restaurant is related to Duke's and Kimo's in Hawaii.  Therefore, it's bound to be good.

My family and I like to come here for a special occasion dinner, because the ambience and elegance is perfect for it.  The view of the lake is amazing, and the food is consistently delicious.

The Hula Pie is just like it is in Hawaii.  Try it, you'll love it...

Have you ever had Oyster's Rockefeller? It is totally freaking delicious. Not at Jake's. So don't order them. It was hard to believe that at one point these poor oysters actual were in the ocean. They were drier than gay sex without Astroglide. H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E! And for about $13 not cheap at all!!!

The salad was MUCH better. I had an Apple and Candied Walnut Salad and it was amazing. Plenty of Walnuts, the dressing complimented the tartness of the apples and sweet/salt of the walnuts. Great choice.

The main course was a first for me: Cioppino.  For those of you who have no idea what Cioppino is and are too lazy to google it, it's basically fish stew. I know, I know it sounds kind of nasty and to be honest I was totally disgusted by both the smell and taste of Mussels ICK!! But after 'fishing' out (no pun intended) the mussels everything else was amazing.

The crab was fresh, scallops tender, halibut yummy...and the broth was spicy and tangy. It was great for a Ciopinno virgin!

The wait staff was a little lackluster...I ordered a Tom Collins and she looked at me and asked "like an old fashioned?" I was like "no like a Tom Collins biznatch, shoo go get it!" I don't blame them though. Basically they are there to make money to go snowboarding the next day and get high or something fun and young like that.

Whatev...if you have a couple of Benjamins to blow go to Jake's.

This is a amazing place...if you think you need to go to Reno to eat your mistaken.
Start with the grilled prawns or seafood chowder. They have Dungeness crabcakes which are good, but I prefer the bluecrab from chesapeke bay.
There are so many good dishes here, I have yet to try the lobster, which many people come here to get on weekends.
Any pasta dish is good...but the secret here is the pot pie. This is a good lunch item as well.(you can tell I like this place.)
I enjoy sitting at the bar chatting with people when I come alone. My wife andf I both travel so it;s seldom we get a chance to stay home.
I would give this place 4 stars, but the prices seem high. Gotta pay for the atmosphere. Alright 4 stars it is.
I might add...you can get a early bird special and the price is very reasonable. Look up my profile...I'usually am at the bar once a week.

My husband and I decided to spend our 3 year anniversary in Tahoe City.  He has never been there and I have not been there in years.  Everyone recommended Jake's on the Lake for dinner and I am so glad we went.  It seemed like it was the busiest place in Tahoe City.  The energy was very warm and inviting, the service was great and the food was excellent. We mentioned it was our anniversary and they gave us lots of extra special attention.  Mike, the Manager and Montana, the Bartenter have both been there for about 30 years and are both incredibly personable, professional and both a class act.  My husband and I decided it will be worth it to make the hour and a half drive just to have dinner there just to visit with them again.
