Texas Monthly called it one of the best.  I am not sure why.  I had the Chicken Fried Steak dinner.  The Waffle Fries were the great, the steak was okay and the gravy was bland.  The salad was boring iceberg with bottled ranch.  Two slices of bread but no rolls or cornbread.  Someone else at our table had a burger -- it was okay but nothing amazing either.  Even the atmosphere isn't great -- it feels a little too institutional.

I stopped here yesterday while driving back to FW. I was excited to see "Since 1948" on the window and in my quest for great pie... well it seemed like a good place to stop.

    Waitresses: Friendly, nice, efficient.

When you walk in, you will be slapped with smoke smell. I didn't know any restaurants still allowed smoking but boy does this place.

I went to sit in non-smoking in the back.
    Salad: anemic iceberg
Soup: was clearly condensed old school Campbell's from a can, microwaved.
Food: Mashed potatoes were real and delicious, Chicken Fried Steak was... well they do not use salt or pepper, it was very bland.

    The coffee was great.

I got pie to go, "blueberry jamboree" and I was underwhelmed.

Sweet waitresses, bad food. It's really disappointing. I thought it could be an amazing 1950's era diner but no, the food is very lackluster.

This place is horrible! I still don't understand why people like this place. Very smoky, food is greasy and bland and it is infested with pests!! The last time my fiance and I were there for a study group session the waitress was walking around killing flies with a flyswatter in the dining area!! Around the tables and on the walls!!! Gross.  And that wasn't the worst part!! As we were walking out the door we heard someone call at us to hold the door open....why? So that a waitress could sweep out a like mouse with a broom through the front door!! We will never set foot in that place ever again!

This place could be featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. I think it is one of the last dozen restaurants that have an ACTIVE smoking section...which happens to be the main area of the eatery. HA! The non-smoking section is in the back. But....I digress.

This place has some of the BEST chicken fried steak EVAH. If you like Tip Top's CFS in San Antonio then this will NOT disappoint. The batter is light and crunchy and they serve the steak on TOP of the gravy, so the steak really doesn't get soggy like other CFS where the gravy is served on top.

The sides aren't amazing, but their waffle fries are a local favorite, and if you like them greasy then you will love them. (I think they're better than Chik-fil-a's "dry" waffle fries hehe)

They have a large menu of southern staples--from grilled cheese sandwiches to steak and baked potato....but our whole family always orders the chicken fried steak. :)

Sweet tea is great and their PIES are amazing. My in-laws regularly order a whole chocolate meringue pie to take home for my hubby (his fav) and it is amazing. Some of the best I've had. Their banana pudding is nom nom nom as well.

So....hold your breath when you first walk in and rush to the back room for non-smoking and order the Chicken Fried Steak dinner....NOM NOM NOM

Warning - read the other reviews here. There's a reason that everybody talks about the smoking section. If you do not smoke or live with a smoker, I doubt you will be able to stay in the place long enough to order.

The food was average diner fare, but the place was really filthy (bathroom was a disaster).

Avoid unless you want to enjoy your smokes with your meal.

Service was good.  Waitress was really nice.  However there is a smoking section and non-smoking and the smoke from the smoking section came over to the non-smokling.  That was awful and my kids had to leave.  Food was ok but over-priced for the quality.  Chicken Fried Steak was huge but over cooked and tasted dried out.  Potatoes were either instant or over mashed to mush.  Omelet was good.  Pies looked good but we did not try them because we had to leave because of the smoke.

Wow, I thought I'd reviewed this place a year ago.   Anyway, get in the car and go here now.

Yes, it's greasy.  Yes' the smokers rule the restaurant, and you non-smokers get a little room to the side that's not even really closed off.  HAH!   Start smoking, it's good for you.

We had chicken fried steaks, gizzards, onion rings, chicken fried chicken, burgers, and just about everything else on the menu and it's all wonderful.  The notable thing is the waffle fries.  Sometimes crispy, sometimes greasy and limp, but always edible!

Oh, that's not it, there's also the pie.  Save room for pie.  They have more pie than anywhere else within ten counties probably.   Get the triple delight, chocolate, cream cheese, and love.  Or the blueberry cream, the coconut, the lemon, buttermilk, cherry, apple, triple chocolate, and so so so many more.   If you're not sure which one to try, get one with the pecan crust . It's AMAZING.

We'd drive at least 100 miles for this stuff.  We have a similar greasy-spoon in Brownwood, but they quit selling pies years ago and it's never been the same.

I have somehow managed to live 40-something years without ever eating chicken fried steak ... until yesterday, at Jake & Dorothy's. I thought it was pretty awesome, but have nothing to compare it to. My H, on the other hand, has plenty of experience in steak of the chicken fried variety, and says it was the best he's had.

Be hungry -- the portions are HUGE. And take cash, cuz they don't take credit cards. But if you're in the area, make time for Jake & Dorothy's. You'll be glad you did.

We stopped because the place was packed with cars and we figured that the natives must like it.

We will never know how we would have liked it.  After walking in and being totally ignored by every waitress - you would think one might make eye contact - we decided to leave.  We could have sat down at a dirty table, but the smoke smell from the smokers turned us off too.

We found a much better location at City Limits, just up the road.

WHAT THE HELL!! Seriously? This is probably some of the worst food I've eaten in eons. I went with my 14 yr old son tonight with high hopes. I LOVE chicken fried steak, and always looking for the best in Texas. This "AIN'T" it!

It was soggy, and sitting in 2 inches of thick gunky powdery gravy. The waffle fries were semi warm and soggy with grease, not crispy and hot by any means. Toast was unbuttered limp plain toast. My son had a BLT we asked if it was big (he likes the triple decker) and was excited when she said it was, but when it came out, he stated he wished it had more bacon, so i looked at the other half. 3 small pieces, one all fat on one of the pieces the other half of the triple decker had NO bacon just lettuce. HUH? over 5.00 for 3 pieces of bacon and some lettuce. I originally thought it must come with fries because thought i'd read that, so he orders waffle fries (same soggy mess as above) and were charged 2.50. Our sodas came in bottles, my coke was a measly 8oz bottle for 1.35 no refills, however it was stated on menu either.

Even before we ordered we asked her to hold to pieces of cherry pie for us (the second reason we came) and after she served us our food we never ever saw her at our table again. They were not busy at all. I had to get up and stand at the cash register to pay our tab and about 5 minutes later she finally gives us our ticket without so much as a "did you not want you pie"? I also asked another waitress if no bacon was standard on the BLT..her answer "don't order that again, our bacon is NOT GOOD"..HUH???? I paid 20.00 for the most horrible meal ever..and at approx 9.00 the worst BLT/fries I've ever had. PLEASE TRUST ME, DO NOT EAT HERE!!!!! you will be much happier at chili's..i'm sorry to say. SHAME ON YOU TEXAS MONTHLY.

Oh yeah..VERY IMPORTANT!! DO NOT GO IF YOU DO NOT LOVE SMELLING OLD STALE SMOKE. I smoke, so this is bad..but walking thru the stench of smokers mixed with grease...yuck..the non smoking room, which isn't separated stunk worse, like an old wet ashtray. My hair smelled like smoke when i left out of there, and my eyes were on fire.

Just like home cooking, if your mom or wife has no cooking skills, imagination, or doesn't own a spice rack. The smoke might bother some people but it never really made a difference to me. With food this bad, a little smoke can't hurt it much more. If I wanted canned green beans and a chicken fried steak like that I'd just marry a elementary school cafeteria worker.
