One of the best mistakes i have made. I was to go out to a restaurant close by which was incidentally closed on a Saturday and I didn't know.
So I came to this restaurant just to ask for directions to another place. I was totally taken aback by its ambience. My friend and I immediately changed our plans and got ourselves seated. The chicken Satay which we had as appetizers were fantastic and much better than the satay I have eaten at other Thai places.
The main course of the Thai Basil fried rice along with a serving of 'Gang Keaw' (Green curry) definitely hit the spot. Both had a slight kick in it. Although we ordered our food with medium spice it was just enough to make our taste buds sing. I shudder to think what would have happened if we had ordered food with the spice level as 'Spicy'
By the end of our lunch we had consumed so much food that although the desserts looked inviting neither of us had any place left to even another morsel of food.
Great place . great food ..
This was our first time at this restaurant and our last!!! We had the shrimp rolls and the Yum Woon Sen for the appetizer. The Yum Woon Sen was EXTREMELY spicy and the shrimp rolls looked as though they had been soaked in oil. For the entree we ordered Jungle Curry (medium spice), Green (Gang Keaw) Curry with shrimp and the Roast Duck Curry. The entrees weren't anything to rave about. They were of average taste. The medium spice was nowhere close to medium it was more like EXTREMELY HOT!!
The waitress kept hovering over us from one side of the table while another employee could hardly wait for us to put our forks down before he would come over to take the dishes away before we were even finished! We were charged for rice when rice is ALWAYS included with every entree, even when you order Chinese take out!!!! To top this "wonderful" experience off the manager came over to us to ask if there was a problem with the service since apparently the $12 tip we gave was NOT ENOUGH!! We tip based on service and the service was not exceptional but I think a $12 tip was decent enough. Overall a horrible experience and we will not be returning!
I headed to Jaiya simply for the lunch special - an appetizer with an entree. Appetizers include salads, soup and spring roll. Being cheap however didn't really pay off because I'll be honest, I wasn't impressed with the food.
I went with the spring roll to start. The plum sauce, although greasy tasting, made the spring roll taste much better. While I understand there were mushrooms in the spring roll, the taste overpowered the roll. Egg rolls and spring rolls are my favorite part of Asian dishes and I was very disappointed.
One of the reasons I love Thai so much is that it's not nearly as greasy as say, Chinese. This chicken pad thai however was so greasy, that I could easily have mistaken it for lo mein. Now, I wouldn't have mistaken it for chicken lo mein because frankly, there was very little chicken in it. The dish tasted bland, and if I was home and eating this dish, rather than a conference room during my lunch hour, I would have been microwaving it with peanut butter on top.
With plenty of Thai places out there, Jaiya won't be on my list to ever return to.
This is the best Thai restaurant I have been to in NY. The ingredients don't taste frozen. Flavors are bolder. Fresh ingredients. And you aren't restrained to the typical Pad Thai / See Ew / Fried Rice menu of most Thai restaurants.
One drawback - if you can't handle spice, you can't eat here. Even if you ask for mild, it won't taste that way to you.
It seems like most nice thai restaurants i've been to around the city all have the same quality of food. Which is really all I can say about Jaiya also. The pad thai and traditional curry was very well made, flavorful, and true to the taste you expect, and the portions were hardy. But since I can get the same quality of food at a number of thai restaurants, the only thing left to really judge was the quality of service, which definitely did not enhance the experience.
The waiter we had must have been useless since he would come over the second we put our fork down to see if we were done. and he did this multiple times. He had no sense of what the we wanted at all. When we asked about why we were charged for rice when they brought rice out with the meal, he was interrupted by another co-worker and never followed up with us.
And that's another thing, RICE IS NOT INCLUDED WITH CURRY! even though they served rice with the curry, it is an additional $1. We didn't even ask for rice, they just brought it out.
whatever, we just took it out of the tip.
it's just sad when some restaurants overlook the little details and think that neon lights and fancy decor makes up for a good dining experience. IT DOESN'T.
if you want a better experience, go next door to THAINY, MUCH BETTER service, slightly lower prices, same quality of food, less crowded.
As far as delicious authentic Thai food goes, this is a good spot. I just went back recently and it looked like they had changed the interior so now it looks a little more loungey. Before, it was more like a regular small restaurant wit simple tables and chairs but it looks like they've put some effort into their cool factor.
The one thing everyone will warn you about is how spicy their food is. They ask you how spicy you want stuff and if you have a weak stomach, I would just stay with mild. I've been eating spicy food since I was like 3 years old so I'm used to it and asked for Medium and it was alright. It actually wasn't that bad so I think if you're used to eating that type of food you can go Medium to Hot.
I've had their Pad-Thai, Pad-See-Ew, Basii Chicken, and Mussaman Curry - all really delicious.
Definitely recommended over ThaiNY next door.
3 1/2 Stars
This review is just for their take-out. They offer delivery in Manhattan for a charge. I ordered food for pick-up and love that you can re-use their tupperware! (It's even dishwasher safe!)
I've walked by this restaurant many times and it's always crowded. I'm sure they have a lot of tasty dishes but I found their tofu pad se-ewe to be on the oily side (even the tofu was deep-fried). I prefer it to be stir-fried and soft.
I'm definitely going to give the rest of their menu a try, but I think I'll do their lunch specials.
It used to be much, much better but has gone downhill in the past ten years. It used to be, hands-down, the best in Manhattan, with its original site in Elmhurst being the best in the entire city. The one in Elmhurst closed years ago and moved to Hicksville (Long Island). I'm not sure if this one changed ownership or not, but I'm assuming it did and that caused the drop in quality.
This place is still above-average and better than most places around, although it is quite expensive. I am a big fan of their Pad Thai--always get it medium spicy--but my favorite dish there is the Mussels in Chili sauce. Exceptional. The soups are excellent, especially the Tom Kha Gai (coconut milk soup).
Definitely check it out--it's worth it.
Yummy yummy yummy i got thai food in my tummy!
Jaiya Thai is awesome. My friend and I went to eat here and we were both very satisfied with our entrees! I ordered the Rad Nar noodles with chicken (broad noodles.) The noodles were wonderfully dressed in some oh-so yummy sauce, which would have tasted equally as good with rice! Nice and thick sauce with some chicken and veggies-- you can't go wrong there!
My friend had the Pad Thai Noodles with shrimp. The Pad Thai was DELICIOUS-- i stole a bite! :-) The portions were pretty decent and the price was good too.
We ordered an appetizer-Grilled Eggplant Yum. My final analysis is that the appetizer is INTERESTING. I don't mean interesting in a good way, but i also don't mean interesting in a bad way. Haha! The grilled eggplant came with babycorn and some mushroom, but the SAUCE was spicy and lemon-y/lime flavor! We ate the whole thing because it made our taste-buds dance. We couldn't figure out whether we liked it or not, but we kept tasting it because you get a hit of the spicy-ness and then the sauce pulls a 180 on you and you immediately get this surge of a lemon taste!
Overall, I enjoyed my experience here. The big screen TV seemed a bit bizarre and out of place, but other than that-- the vibe of the restaurant is nice.
The only thing that we weren't happy with is the water-- it tasted terrible. We ordered jasmine and green tea, but don't get those either because the tea bags didn't seem to give us the flavor of the tea. I recommend you to order soda or bring your own bottle of water!
The staff is also very nice and accommodating. The waiter was a little slow, but we weren't in a rush-- so it was fine.
Great noodles though!
Yes!!! Finally, a thai restaurant in Manhattan that deserves my money. One where when I order the food "hot" I actually need to stop eating during the meal to compose myself. I will definitely be going back to try some of their other dishes, because this place is as close to bay area thai as you can get without going to Queens.
There were no complaints about anything, but make sure you try the papaya salad and the shrimp roll for appetizers.
Food is very tasty. Their shrimp paid thai was excellent. The shrimp was grilled perfectly. Their fried rices are also excellent and seasoned well. What bugged me was having to order and pay for rice separately for my tofu and curry dish.
Decor is cool. Service is decent, but I constantly felt pressured by the waitress to hurry up and order asap (and I wasn't there right before closing either).
THEIR DISHES ARE EXTREMELY SPICY, SO BEWARE.
Prices are moderate. Food is worth it.
Bathrooms smelled really awful though, but they're getting 4 stars cuz the food was pretty damn good. Will definitely come back again.
i order jaiya at least once a week (read: 2-3 times a week). i think that is testament enough to how i feel about jaiya and its food. if it isn't, i have eaten basically everything on the menu and have never been disappointed.
the one point i need to make is that their spiciness scale is completely bonkers. there isn't a single white person i know who can handle their "medium", let alone the "hot".
I can't really judge what's "traditional" Thai food because I'm not Thai, but I'm basing it off of Thai food in California where it reigns over on the west coast. After having many disappointments with ordering pad thai (ie, pad thai that tastes like chow fun--an experience that made me question if NY had their azns right), I was pleasantly surprised by this place!
Well, it may be because I'm into spicy food, but I thought the food here was tasty and well-cooked for the most part. The pad thai threw me off at first because it was WHITE. I have never seen pad thai that was white, but don't be fooled...there was flavor packed in there. (I got mild. It was just right. And I love spicy.) My friend got a pork dish cooked with other vegetables or eggplant (I think) and it was so-so... the meat was tough. Wouldn't really recommend that one, but I also tried the red curry and drunken man noodles which were both good.
I really hate to write this review but I was really disappointed this time. I consider Jaiya Thai, as my top ten in NYC.
They have been undergoing some really cheesy renovations but that isn't what the issue is. I think that the chef has changed. The chicken was dry and like any run of the mill Thai joint. I had asked the waitress whom I know from frequenting Jaiya. She was reluctant to tell me that the changes are beyond the decor and there is a new chef in the kitchen. The chef has a lot to learn, as well as the owner.
Higher prices for a lame chef and terrible decor in a horrible economy!
Jaiya! Please bring the old Chef back!

Really Spicy and tasty! If your in for a real Thai food, go there. The place is a little bit of a… Read more »
this is the best thai i've had in NYC, and comes close to the best thai i've ever had (in thai town in LA!!). not that i am a connoisseur of new york thai places or nothingk (i am a lazy hobo who craves thai a lot of times, but usually just settles for whatever is closest and/or cheapest, and as there is a thai place literally right next door to me i do not get out very far, you see) but there are SO MANY PLACES where i will ask and reiterate for "really super spicy, like THAI spicy" (key term), and what comes out still does not satisfy. jaiya is not one of those places hallelujerr!!! completely delivers.
i love heartburn-OD-on-pepto-spicy, except i don't really need to worry about heartburn because i am young and healthy. and korean? (there is no spicy dish on the earth that rivals the spiciness of cham-ppong! mm~) i ordered the pad kee mao like i always do for a first-time at a thai place; the waiter asked me twice "are you sure?" like he totally thought i couldn't handle it, me bein all five feet tall and whatnot. whatever waiter dude i ate every bite!! yeah you saw me!!!!! what nowww
to be honest it could have been spicier actually. i don't know, am i abnormal?? all the other reviews here are like "only try the spicy IF YOU DARE!!!!! EXCLAMATION POINTS!!~~" i don't know if there is a spicier level than "spicy," i will have to ask next time.
The thai steak tartar was one of the best appetizers I've ever had. The chili, lime and herb flavors combined with the tender sliced steak set off little bells in my mouth. I was really excited for the rest of our meal, but the main courses weren't nearly as good. Pad kee mao had good texture, but panang curry lacked complexity, and both dishes were oversalted. I think someone had a heavy hand with the msg. They definitely use it, because the menu says to inform them if you are allergic. I have an open mind when it comes to msg, but it shouldn't be a predominant flavor.
Ambience is lousy here, with cramped seating, cheap decor, huge tvs and sketchy homeless guys ogling us through the window.
this is it. the end.
the end all be all of all thai restaurants out there.
cry no more you have reached the holy land.
the mecca.....the final beacon of all that is thai.

wipe that weary brow...wash away those tears..
no need to work so hard anymore those days are over.....
come and rest your weary head on a plate full of the most savorful shrimp with chilli and basil you will ever find, relax amongst the
succulent aromas of the spicy seafood soup bought to you atop a
searing flame of fire. rejoice in the tropical flavor of the most delicious

can i have an amen?
amen! hallelujah...! praise da lawd! set me free !
free at last free at last, good god almighty, we are free at last !
general rule of thumb that applies to all thai dining establishments: if you see south asians (i.e. indians) consistently flocking to a thai place for like eva'...that means it's the real deal. forget about all the reviews you hear or read. just follow ma peeps ......"cause dey know dey shit.......& somethin' must be goin' on."
jaiya translation:
no spicy ---= a mild
mild ---= a medium
medium ---- = tongue's on fire
hot ---- = hot damn call the paramedics
very spicy----= ............. *crickets*......& then....please we need u to sign disclaimer over here. we cannot be held responsible. "
Do you like spicy, hot Thai - that's the place to go! The food is fantastic, no matter if you eat at the restaurant or order a delivery!
This place attracts a lot of Indian folk. I can say that, cuz my family is Indian.
I thought it may be due to the fact that it falls in the curry hill area of Manhattan... but, I soon realized, its more because its SPICY AS HELL.
Thats right... I ordered medium - BIG MISTAKE. This place is beyond spicy - and I mean hot. I was with someone who ordered mild - yup, still too spicy! And I grew up eating spicy food! I mean, geez, I can't imagine what plain ol' american folk would think.
Once I drank enough water to put out the fire on my tongue, I realized that the taste was actually delicious!
Final input: The food is great and you will enjoy it as long as you have a high threshold for pain... or you are able to tolerate insanely hot food.
My favorite thai place. If you're looking for ambiance, keep looking. If you're looking for solid, tasty thai food, this is it. I'm not thai and therefore I doubt i can be a "purist" the way some people claim to be or might even really be, but this place is good. i eat thai food often enough to be able to consider myself a decent judge. will i be in a food magazine talking about fusion and texture? no. do i know a good thai place when i see one? yes. this is it. the best thai food i've had in nyc. will i ever understand them playing sportscenter on a movie theater size tv sometimes? never.
edit: you must try the Tom Yum Soup. Even if that's the only thing you get. Trust.
Out of the uncountable Thai restaurants I have tried in New York, this one is definitely my favorite. Everything I have tried on the menu on my several visits were excellent. The food is so very spicy, that Spice Thai would be a more appropriate name for this restaurant! I have a decent spice level tolerance, but even the mild is spicy for me.
Not half bad. Beware how spicy you think you can handle - my friend orderd the "spicy" and it turned out to be a tear filled night.
The service is great, and the restaurant itself has a nice ambience. As far as thai food goes though - I can't honestly say it is a class above any of the other places I like to frequent.
I order delivery from here allthetime. I have been in to eat a few times, but I do prefer to order as the service is not great.
And what do I eat, you wonder? I always get the tom yum soup. I either will get mild or medium depending on my mood - I do like spicy foods and let me tell you, medium-spicy is plenty enough for me. And the mild never lacks flavor. The soup is um, made for approx 3 people, and I'm pretty sure I eat all of it in one sitting.
Now for the entrees. I love the penang curry and kee mow noodles. Every time I want to order both but since I live by myself and refuse to be 300 pounds, I try to keep it to one soup and one entree.
What will I do when I leave Murray Hill?
Ordered food for pickup on a Tuesday Night. Place was almost deserted as it was 10pm when I went there.
Ordered the following:
- Chicken with Chili and Basil Leaves - was forewarned it was going to be very spicy but I didn't mind. They were right. It had kick but the addictive kind that kept you wanting more. Chicken pieces were fresh and so were the herbs. Would go back to try more dishes.
Total came out to $12 and change w/ white rice
I came here with high expectations which is probably why I didn't leave happy. We ordered an assortment of dishes including the chili eggplant dish, tom yum soup, prawn with special sauce, and shrimp pad thai. Everything was very average, with the exception of the pad thai, which I have to say was phenomenal!
My advice - Jaiya is a good restaurant, but I am pretty sure that it has passed its prime!
We stopped here for a quick dinner on Sunday night. I had walked past the place several times but it wasn't until someone recommended it for it's authencity and spicyness that we thought we would try it.
Let me first say that I have had some very average thai meals in the city, so I wasn't expecting much at Jaiya but it was all suprisingly good. We started with an eggplant salad, which delicious and refreshing and hot! This was followed by chilli basil tofu. Again a pleasently spicy, well seasoned dish.
The service was good, the serving sizes were acceptable. Overall a nice meal. We'll go here again.
Came here for a fix of my late night craving for Papaya Salad.
Service was good. We were greeted as soon as we walked in. Everyone that worked there was very friendly.
I can honestly say that I enjoyed the salad. Wasn't as good as others I've tried but good enough to put me to sleep. Thanks Jaiya! I went to bed a happy man. LOL.
What a boring review, I know! NEXT!
I always use to pass Jaiya when I go to Tonic. I always use to see the place packed, So i finally decided to give the place a shot. I went last Friday with a few friends. The place was packed around 8. here is what I think about jaiya
Pros- Awsome food, good location
Cons-Small place, slow service
3 1/2 stars still, got the drunken noodles again and also tried the pad see ew, both dishes were flavorful and the noodles werent overcooked. Also tried the nam sod which was ground pork with onions with a lime dressing, flavorful but kind of a rip off for 9 bucks.

Yum-E!
Had Jaiya Thai on a friend's recommendation and it truly is the best authentic Thai you can get, either in NY or elsewhere (and I like to think SF has good Thai food).
Take everyone's word for it and beware of the spiciness factor. I can tolerate hot food and the medium level was good: lots of kick but not for the weak.
The dishes are hit or miss. Stick with the beef jungle curry (without coconut milk) and seafood or beef dishes. Their chicken was dry.
Jaiya holds a special place in my heart. It was the first place I ate at and could afford on a shoestring budget when I first moved to New York three years ago. It's also my favorite authentic Thai restaurant and the closest to homecooking I've been able to find here. Although Thai food is often referred to as a single cuisine, there are multiple variations - my favorite being Isan or Northeast Thai style with Lao influence. Somehow, the spicier the food is, the better it tastes. However, I caution people from ordering "spicy" because their medium is already a tongue burner and meant for iron stomachs. Everyone I've taken to Jaiya has also loved it. While the restaurant has been remodeled over the years, they have the same familiar servers and great dishes. And even though a trendier, competing Thai restaurant has opened up next door, I've been loyal to Jaiya and dined there out of my way solo on many occasions. My favorite dishes include:
* Green papaya salad (som tum)
* Grilled beef salad (nur yang nam tok)
* Green pork curry
* Vegetarian spicy soup
* Fish Chili Sauce (pla rard prik)
Culinary Explorer's Guide to Authentic Thai Cuisine:
1. Look for papaya salad on the menu. This is a staple street dish and should be the perfect blend of sweet, salty, sour and spicy.
2. Try the sticky rice and don't be afraid to get your fingers in the food.
3. Many wonder what drink goes best with spicy Thai food. I recommend either the thai iced tea or a glass of Riesling to cool the palette.
4. Look for other Asians or Indians in the restaurant. Hey, we know where good spicy food is served!
A mainstay of the Murray Hill restaurant community, Jaiya is always packed.
I love the vegetable rard-nar and their basic pad thai. One might also fancy their spring rolls and the spicy vegetarian soup (with or without coconut milk). They can make the food as spicy as you want it to be.
Good food. Fast service. Somewhat basic set-up. In a neighborhood that is wanting in good restaurants.
One of the better, vegetarian-friendly Thai restaurants we've tried so far. If it weren't for the zero-star SERVICE, this place gets a solid 4-star rating. (scroll down for details.)
FOOD: Lots of interesting flavors! We found certain dishes to be a little salty, but tasty regardless. The tom yum soup is a big must - it got us all excited. The seafood salad was decent, and the panang curry was heavy, but satisfying. The menu offers many vegetarian options, and the fake duck tasted alright. One thing I didn't like was the rice - soft and mushy.
SERVICE: Very polite. They served us vegetarian duck by mistake, but no big deal...they immediately replaced it.
AMBIANCE: The place doesn't look so nice from the outside, but it's surprisingly clean, modern and well decorated inside. A bit dark, but perfect for any occasion.
SUM: We're definitely going back for more spicy Jaiya!
--------------------
UPDATE: No, we're not going back to Jaiya anymore. The service is unacceptable, and here's why. The tables were so narrowly placed that everytime a waiter/waitress walked by, they made us STAND and make way, during our meal. We complained, but they ignored.
WTF. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE.
Everything I've had at Jaiya has been tasty. When they warn you that something is spicy, believe it! I love spicy food.. so I love Jaiya. Good portions, good flavor and good service.
Try:
Tom Yam Chicken - served in a steamboat with fire in the middle, was awesome. I ordered it 2 nights in a row.
Beef Nam Tok (salad for appetizer)
Chicken Green curry (trust me ask for mild spiciness)
Duck basil stir fry (greasy but sooo tasty)
Chicken Panang curry (a dry red curry)
Yum.
Made a reservation, just in case, but they didn't have it when we showed up. Could have been bad, but the place was empty, so we got a table for 4 (the place was totally full 20 minutes later).
After ordering our food the waitress recommended this soup, with fire in the middle. We order after some discussion, the Chicken soup...with fire in the middle. Medium spicy. Wow! This soup was amazing. I'd come here again just for that soup. Quite spicy, so I'm glad that this place isn't like many other places where Medium is "Medium for Americans" but it's actually spicy and not the burn your tongue spicy (though it's some of that as well), but more full of taste and combination of flavours.
If there is a dish there that has varying grades of spicy to it. I'd want to get that one. Whatever mixes of spices they use, it really makes the food taste amazing.
By far the best Thai food in New York. I have yet to find anything that is even remotely close.
My parents used to come here back in the nineties and recommended this place to me when I moved out here myself a few years ago.
There are 2 dishes that will rock your world: the chicken satay appetizer and the chicken pad thai.
The satay is on a stick and grilled and marinated to produce an orange/reddish tint. Dip that in the peanut sauce that comes with it and you'll see why I come to Jaiya Thai every Sunday night.
The chicken pad thai is the other reason to come back. I salivate just thinking about it. Flavorful yet not too filling.
Echoing everyone else on here, they don't mess around with the spice and they will tell you upfront. If in doubt, GO MILD. Trust me. Don't try to be a hero.
Ambiance is casual yet intimate. A great date spot or simply a solid place to catch up with a friend. There is a huge tv in the back that shows whatever is the big event that night while also providing a little background entertainment .
Simply amazing.
Still a 4-star rating overall, but you must order the whole fish with chili. We ordered it medium spicy and it was tingly-hot but not blistering. Wonderful flavor, crispy skin, tender, flaky flesh. A 5-star dish for sure.

Hands down one the best Thai restaurants in the city. Noodle dishes are great and the heat level is… Read more »
This is the only place in Manhattan where I order medium spicy instead of hot or very spicy. Trust me, I've tried "hot" a couple of times and always end up regretting it.
Yesterday my medium-hot beef with basil and chili sauce had the equivalent of 2 or 3 green chilis with the seeds. These things are no joke and I love them! I've had soups and noodle dishes and they are delicious. I agree with other reviewers that prices are not low and portions could be a bit larger. However, the botton line is that this is an excellent Thai place, if a bit of a dive.
We just had lunch delivered from here and I just have to say that the beef red curry with bamboo shoots is by far the best red curry I've had in the entire city. The ratio of coconut milk to broth is perfect. The seasoning equals that of my mom's. In fact, the only way they could make this better is if they stewed the meat more.
Yes, prices are expensive (curry was $14). The lunch special sizing is rather small and many of my coworkers are complaining about still being hungry (though lunch specials are about $7). BUT I will definitely be eating from here again. I'd give this place a 5 stars but I need to try a couple more dishes before I can do that.
Not bad, but certainly did not live up to my expectations. It got such rave reviews from so many people. It just wasn't that that that good.
We had nam sod for app. Just ok. The shrimp pad thai was just ok. The chicken with green curry was just ok, almost too watery.
Everything here was just ok except for the service which was so exceptional. Our waitress was so nice and giggly and so delightful.
But, I would never come back. Wondee Siam and Sripriphai just BLOW this place away.
