Review from Ashley B.
I wish I could give 6 stars! I'm so overjoyed that Jai Shanti is staying open! I tried out Yoga Samadhi and it just wouldn't do (I felt like I was lying down for half of the class I took!), and the prospect of finding another class somewhere else comparable to the Yoga Workout class just seemed so daunting.
But now there is no need and, let me just tell you, it's even better! I took my first Yoga Workout class of the New Year with Tra (who used to do the morning yoga classes and I'd taken that class with her once) and she kicked my ass! It was an amazing class, and her sense of humor kept things lighthearted and her thoughts and soothing voice calmed me and kept me centered. I'm sore, but limber, strong-feeling, energized, and focused this morning - just how a good yoga session should make you feel!
Plus! They have plans to start taking credit and debit cards soon! My beloved studio is not only still here, but it's going to keep getting better!Listed in: Workin' on My Fitness

I began my yoga journey many years ago with videos, but it wasn't until I began taking "live" classes that I truly embraced yoga as a lifestyle and experienced actually LEARNING yoga rather than following the physical poses. Jai Shanti combines amazing teachers and a sacred space for fun, safe, and energizing yoga for everyone..regardless of their intentions behind their own individual yoga practices. I was so impressed with the energy and scope of knowledge of the teachers here, not to mention the sense of community and events like drumming and kirtan, that I decided to take the yoga teacher training offered through Ja Shanti. I had already been taking yoga for nearly a decade and had begun leading some classes after being asked. But it was through Jai Shanti, William, and Yoganand that Pranakriya yoga gave me the training to become a teacher. Today, I am grateful that after over 8 yrs, Jai Shanti is now going to stay in its space as William moves on and a new owner has stepped in to keep this space a sacred, positive place for people to continue to follow their yoga path.

I have to admit, stepping in Jai Shanti tonight for the first time, I was a bit apprehensive. Since this was my first time ever stepping foot in a yoga studio, or even practicing yoga, I didn't know exactly what to expect, all I knew was that I didn't want to make a fool out of myself. I really wanted a supplement to my work out, and to learn how to manage stress, so I decided to swallow my pride.
As the practice went on, the instructor (also the owner), Bill, was very soothing, and very nice in showing everyone poses during the 90 minute session. Yes, I know 90 minutes sounds a lot, but as the minutes past by, the more and more I wanted to stay! The studio was nice sized, and a bit warm in temperature, but it all complemented along with the stretches and strength poses.
For your first session, you receive the next session free, which is awesome! I definitely liked the way in which money was collected. I did notice they offer mat rentals for $10.00 and offer other yoga classes, and Thai massage.
I'm definitely hooked, and looking forward to another practice with Bill!Comment from Bill H. of Jai Shanti Yoga 7/26/2009

I've never taken a yoga class anywhere else, so I'm not sure how Jai Shanti compares to other studios. Yoga videos on netflix is the most experience I had before checking out Jai Shanti.
What I do know is that I've found the Yoga Flow and Yoga for Everybody classes with Chuck to be very good. He's a very good teacher, keeps things light while helping you stay centered and is easy to follow, even if you haven't done a lot of yoga before.
The studio is very lovely and you will start to feel relaxed as soon as you walk in. They have lots of good equipment (mats, blocks, straps, etc...) and grabbed a mat for me when I forgot to bring my own.
I do find it easy to miss if you're flying by on Dekalb Ave (even though the name is painted super large on the side of the building...). Keep in mind it's just past My Favorite Mechanic if you're heading towards Decatur on Dekalb.
They have a good newsletter too, with lots of info on upcoming events and sometimes multi-class deals. -

I attended Jai Shanti's "Yoga for Everybody" session with Kristin, and really enjoyed it here. They have great props, like lavender-filled eye pillows and neck pillows, that make it very easy to unwind.
Kristin was great - she provided help when it was needed and answered my questions at the end of the session. I liked the music Kristin played, which helped to mask the slight car noise on Dekalb Avenue.
Jai Shanti has some interesting classes - for example, "Hooping" (hula hooping), "Poi Spinng" and "The Living Room". They also offer Yin/Restorative Yoga, which not every yoga studio offers. And they even have a "Yoga for Kids" class for those of you with children. Classes are mostly $12 or $16, although a few classes are $8 or $10. 2nd class is free. -

I really enjoy going to Jai Shanti, but the problem with yoga is keeping a consistant schedule. I really like Bill for an instructor, but it's hard for me to schedule my time around the sessions that he leads. The result is that I usually have an unfamiliar instructor, and I've pretty much had a different instructor every time I've gone. On the plus side, they're all pretty good. The place is clean (mats, blocks, and the most incredible eye pillows). I've found that the instructors are very chatty at the beginning of each session - which is nice because they are just super friendly, but also a bit of an annoyance because I just dropped $10 (student rate) for a single class and I want to get my money's worth of exercise! Parking is a pain in the butt because it's on the street. In the end I keep coming back because it's the best yoga studio I've been to so far in Atlanta.

Edit (9 Sept 2007):
I recently went back to Jai Shanti and Sandi kicks some serious yoga butt as an instructor. I really like her as a teacher and I felt great leaving the class. Try and grab Sandi if you're a beginning Yogi and are looking to break into the Yoga scene. She'll give you a great workout and you'll feel totally refreshed and ready to start your day when it's all over. -

I was lost when I decided to start taking Yoga, I'd heard about Jai Shanti through a co-worker and I cannot express the happiness I've experienced and found at this place. So far the teachers(Jeni & Tra) I've encountered have been super nice and very knowledgeable about Yoga and what it does to your body. They're quick to explain how each work-out,pose,breath will eventually help you in the end. I look forward to each class like a school kid waiting for her first day of school.
I've learned to research poses and workouts on my own as well and I have to thank Jai Shanti for igniting this in me. So if you are looking for an escape from work, life, etc then I highly recommend this place once you've taken you're first class you will see it for yourself. -

I first started taking classes at Jai Shanti about 5 years ago and I knew from the first moment I stepped into the studio that it was going to feel like home to me and that my spiritual practice would benefit from the instruction and insight I received there. I had been to other yoga studios in the Atlanta and Decatur areas and they are all good in their own ways, but what impressed me so much about Jai Shanti and the yoga teachers there is the absolute lack of pretention combined with sincere dedication to and acceptance of everyone who steps into that space for yoga.
What also impressed me is that Jai Shanti is true to its motto of yoga being for "every body." The first teacher who taught me was not some lithe, bend-yourself-into-a-pretzel yoga model - she is a real woman with a real body and I appreciated and respected the love and comfort she displayed with regard to her own body during the class.
I've attended a number of classes over the years and have become quite friendly with a number of the teachers. They are an amazing group of people who inspire me to get on the mat and deepen my practice, deepen my knowledge and connection to the Divine. I especially love the influence of Kripalu here because the emphasis on breathwork and meditation has taught me so much. In fact, Sandi Angotti (one of the teachers) was also my birth doula - and the work I did with her and at Jai Shanti helped me through a 36 hour labor, most of which I did without any pain medications because I tapped into the strength and space that pranayama (breathwork) provides. Bill Hufschmidt often combines Thai massage techniques with asanas, and that can be really helpful at opening up the body to the fullest expression of an asana. Good stuff all around!
As another reviewer has mentioned, the timing for classes can be a challenge at times, but once you get into a routine and find a couple of classes at times that work for you, the teachers generally remain consistent. Overall, I'm glad that they remain relatively small and accessible.
On my big wish list, I would love it if they offered a kids yoga option (toddler through older kids) on the weekends. I want my daughter to be raised with yoga but many of the kids' yoga classes are offered during the week, which is impossible if you're a working mom. -

I have lived two blocks away but have never visited Jai Shanti before this week. I just decided now was the time to go and I'm glad I did. I felt miles away from Atlanta in the small studio right on dekalb ave. My first instructor, as this was my first visit, was Melissa Mimms. She was very friendly and helped me feel at ease at my first class. I really liked the potted plants throughout the building and the open spirit of how money is collected etc. Also, your second class is free. i'm planning on going tomorrow, hopefully I'll have a new review.

i took charles yoga work out class. it hasnt even been a few hours yet, and im all kinds of hurting in a good way. great way to tone up. it was all yoga, but the the sequences were geared more towards the "work out" aspect of yoga. the space is cool. ONLY TAKES CASH!!! i found out the hard way. parking is an issue. go early to secure a spot. the class was great and i recommend it to anyone who wants to get in shape. second class is free, so i will def go back. but i would have gone back even if it wasnt.
