Great place to get a hot drink and a slice of DELICIOUS cake! This was the perfect warm-up to the cold fall day of walking around Salem. Cake was expensive (about 7/slice) but totally worth it! We tried the Red Velvet and Chocolate Cake. You must try the chocolate cake if you go! So rich and moist! Coffee was good as well. Recommended also if you are looking for a free wi-fi spot to go and chill out. Pretty low key and hanging out stuff. Relaxing atmosphere.

Jaho gets full props for ambiance and good service/provender, and demerits for price and pretension.
YMMV, and obviously for a lot of the reviewers here, it's a matter of taste. I actually waited until I'd been a few times, waiting to fall more in love. It didn't come.
I mean, dude, check the antique-y parchment loosely bound book-of-shadows menu of "zodiac teas" for $5-ish for a tea-for-one pot. This is obviously Pickering Wharf looking for an October tourism crowd and the witchy-kitchschy contingent. My friend's Aquarius tea was full of juicy infused freeze-dried fruits, and nommy, and I had to show her how the nesting tea-for-one set worked. Perhaps it's an Experience.
I feel like the management is hanging a big fat HIPSTER neon sign on me when I walk in, just from the menu, the prices, the selection... I just moved to Salem from the environs of Davis in Somerville, and trust me I know those signs! :)
The dark wood and comfy chairs are awesome, and it's quiet and nice. It's just irksome that a local place is charging more than Starbucks for everything down to the small brewed coffee.
I carve a lot of coffee shop out of my budget -- I'm a writer! Budget luxuries first. And really, getting out to somewhere with good ambiance, caffeine and wi-fi is not even a luxury.
I'll meet someone else here if it's their choice, but opt for somewhere else first for myself.
Service is awesome, although I heard rumors there's been some issues between management and waitstaff from a companion.
Just misses being a winner. -

This is like a Starbucks, but without the name and with a lot more delicious pastries! My boyfriend and I kept seeing people come in and out of there with gelato and we were craving for something sweet and cold after our dinner on the harbor! The gelato was good, not spectacular, it hits the spot without the extra added sugar. But all awhile, a tall four-layered, chocolate cake kept starring us in the face...I can only imagine what that might have tasted like.
The staff is young but distracted by their clock-out hour. There is enough seating on Sunday afternoon. The price is okay, would have probably preferred to spend it on that chocolate torte instead of the gelato....
I will try the ice cream shop a block away next time for a soft served delight. -

Delicious coffee for a brisk afternoon. The cafe was super cozy. The coffee fresh and yummy.

This place is top notch. Today I may have had the best cup of coffee I've ever had. I had their hand made Guatemalan drip coffee at the recommendation of the staff and I was not disappointed. As others have commented, the coffee did not need any cream or sugar--it was perfect just the way it was. I've never seen coffee made like this before, but it was really good. Before my cup of drip coffee, I also enjoyed a delicious cafe americano. The barristas here know what they're doing.
The atmosphere here is very comfortable and slightly more upscale than your average cafe, but it is not stuffy or pretentious. It's a great place for lounging and hanging out while you take advantage of their free wi-fi (FYI - if you sit in the back, there's an outlet inside the middle cabinet on the bottom of the display rack. Just open the cabinet door to find it. I heard the employee behind the counter provide another customer with this information. It appeared that outlets were somewhat scarce because of their being so many tables placed away from walls).
I will definitely be back to try other selections from their vast array of coffee. I also will be going back to try their siphoned coffee.
Another plus is that there's free 2-hour parking just outside the front door (note: they don't open until 9am and they're closed on Tuesdays).
My only complaint was that it was ridiculously cold in here, even with several space heaters scattered throughout the cafe. I sat right next to one of them and was still cold. Turn up the heat my friends! I want to be a regular here, but I don't want to freeze! Other than this one complaint, my experience here was fantastic. -

I had a cappuccino that made me very very happy. It came in a huge red mug, with a heart in the foam. It was rich and strong, but mellow, and with no bitterness. Yum. Didn't need any sweetening at all. In fact, it was one of those good cappuccinos that would have been damaged by sugar.
This location was nearly empty on a nice sunny Saturday - the location on Derby street right around the corner was packed with a line for service and all the little bit of outdoor seating taken. . . yep, we'll go back to the big open space of wharf street, thanks!
Though I was initially disappointed that the low comfy looking squishy chairs were taken, upon choosing another table it was clear that ALL the chairs have nice padding and are good for sitting in for hours of caffeinated conversation. Just enough light, very low key and soothing atmosphere. Wood, leather, cozy chairs, regular chairs with surprise padding - and also lots of tea and coffee paraphernalia available, displayed on shelves that lined the walls.
I didn't notice the food available or the prices, since I didn't deal with those things.
I must go back there to do more research.
For you, in the name of Yelp journalism.
So far, so good. -

I'm personally not a coffee fan, but everyone I know who is raves about their coffee. I'm in love with their sipping chocolates, and hopefully they have hot cider again this fall, yum!

Jaho is a cool spot right next to the Salem waterfront. They seem pretty intense about their coffee, but as a regular ol brewed coffee guy, I thought what they had to offer was pretty average. Can't speak for the espresso drinks though, at least not yet.
As a student, I would say this place is great for studying - lots of comfortable chairs and large tables - but there seems to be a real lack of electrical outlets for plugging in computer adaptors...kind of a pet peeve of mine. Maybe I overlooked some, but they seemed to be pretty scarce.
Overall, though, Jaho is one of the top coffee spots around the North Shore. -

Quaint little coffee house in Salem near most of the tourist attractions. They've got a huge menu with a large selections of beverages and treats. The Cafe Au Lait was good although I was tempted to try several things on the menu.
The decor was a bit odd and I thought it was kind of weird that they have carpeted floors all over the place. The cashier was friendly but the poor girl behind the espresso bar was so overwhelmed and the drinks were slow to come out. I loved their cute coffee sleeves with the glasses and mustaches. Definitely would return if I were in Salem but not necessarily spectacular. -

This is a great coffee shop. It could be an amazing coffee shop with more effort and technique directed toward cappuccino making.
Looking forward to trying Syphon process and their cold drip in the summer. I'm a cold drip fan from back in my NOLA days.
Breakfast sandwiches are yummy. Atmosphere is cozy.

Well I love the atmosphere it's unlike any other i've ever been too.
At the same time, they do a lot of advertising of drinks on their doors but they tend to not have what it says in stock. Even in the summer. Which was upsetting. Their red velvet cake was amazing and almost too rich for my taste. THe frozen hot chocolate is good good good. It takes like lucky charms to me but it's still very good.
Parking is very limited and the prices can vary. I heard the tea is really good -

Nice little coffee shop in Salem, Mass that can could easily substitute for Dunkin Donuts any day. Had a nice morning breakfast with my girlfriend and other friends. Nice cozy quaint laid back place, although i feel like there were these two guys grilling my girlfriend and I and i kept staring back at them but they didn't cause any trouble. When our orders came out they were brought to us by a nice young lady who got one order wrong but promptly came back out with the corrected version. I got an iced coffee which i added nothing to and my girlfriend looked at me like i was crazy but i just like my coffee straight up and with a wacka flocka pow pow punch to it! also got a toasted plain bagel with egg and bacon on it, and it was quite scrumptious, not better than Bagel world but then again who can really compete with that place!

This coffee and tea shop maintains a very high level of excellence and it is my clear favorite. Starting with the espresso bar, featuring a superlative La Marzocco machine, the owner is a master barista who produces great shots and great micro foam. Also offered are standard brewed coffees utilizing your choice of methods: either a French press or the unique siphon bar (featuring vacuum brewing pots in two sizes). The coffee beans are roasted on site and the owner does not fall into the trap of over-roasting the beans. He uses an appropriately light roast in order to allow the subtle characteristics of the coffee bean to emerge. In other words, at this coffee bar, you will truly taste the coffee, not just the roast. The taste of the coffee served here is absolutely wonderful.
The offering of teas is also excellent, as is the small menu of foods served. I have tried the tomato-mozzarella salad, and the pizza, and both were delicious. Seating is very comfortable and the atmosphere is very relaxing. This is a place where you can really savor the flavors.
If you truly appreciate a coffee artist whose attention to food and beverage quality is uncompromising, you should check this place out...you will not be disappointed. -

Free Wi-Fi, big menu of breakfast, sandwiches, coffee, and desserts all day.
I had an eggs & cheese + sausage on a croissant today with a grand mocha orange iced coffee, and it was really good. The coffee was recommended by the worker, and it was REALLY GOOD. The prices are decent... typical Starbucks prices like ~$4 for a regular sized coffee.
The interior is very nice and cozy - comfortable sofas to sit on as well!
Wi-Fi is very weak though. -

Wow- this place is amazing! The atmosphere is calming and chic, plus full of goodies to read (which I love to find in a cafe). The way the place is set up is just very cool and appeals to the caffeine freak inside of me. The owner actually makes the drinks, and he was very friendly and quick with the order.
I decided to try something new and got a Moroccan Milk iced Chai. Not sure what I think still- I found it too spicy, but my boyfriend loved it. He wants to go back and get another. And another. It was that good. I've never seen him fall in love with a drink like that so if you like slightly spicy chai drinks then I think this may be the drink for you!
This is going to be a MUST stop spot every time we're in Salem from now on. So much on the menu looked tempting, and I wanted to try it all. Very classy place with great service and good prices. They offered food also, and an assortment of European candy bars. They had "bubble" chocolate which is very popular in Europe; it's essential chocolate bars with air inside so that it tastes lighter. Go relax with a nice chai and maybe a chocolate bubble bar, you won't regret it! -
Review from Geoff M.
I really, really like the siphon coffee. It's pricey, but about as good as it gets. The bitterness just isn't there. Smooth is the way to describe it. Very interesting to watch too.
I haven't tried anything else, though the food menu looks really interesting, with salads and sandwiches that sound appetizing. I'd consider 5 stars, but I'm not sure I'm really cool enough to hang here, so minus 1 for that. -

2nd location round the corner is far far better. Furniture is new and very updated version of the original. Attitude is far better too. I guess someone should break it to them (the girl in dread lock hair in the morning shift and the bearded guy at night shift) that they are only coffee makers for god sake. Word of advice lose the attitude. Be thankful that someone even hired you for a job. I hate the snobbiness and rudeness. Coffee is Great. Price @ almost $4.50? Really?!!!!

Salem, MA
Their new location is a gorgeous, spacious seating area in a historic building just steps away from their original location. Their sandwiches are tasty and fresh, served on the most delicious cheese foccacia I've ever tasted. They're hearty and come with chips but I feel $8+ is a little pricey for a sandwich. Having said that, though, I'd kill for their chicken salad! They have a large selection of cakes and pastries and other desserts that are out of this world.
"Tea merchants" is no joke! The wall behind the service counter is floor-to-ceiling with tins of various loose tea blends, all of which are sold by the bag as well as cup. Their coffee is good, I feel a little on the bitter side. Their unique siphon coffee, however, is not for me. It takes several minutes to brew a cup and it was very bitter.
This is a cozy and comfortable place to relax with a hot drink or some food. It attracts a diverse crowd, much less hipster-heavy than Front St. -

The decor didn't feel quite right to me as a coffee shop. Maybe it is a east coast thing. Also they order our Orange Juice order. Nice place to stop in on a cold day in Salem. Coffee was good, service, not so much

I love going to Jaho, and if I didn't live 40 minutes away, I'd be here every week (day?). I've never seen anyone take so much care in making a cup of coffee. I agree with several of the other reviewers who've written that it may be the best cup of coffee they've ever had. They are perfect--no need for anything--don't even think about adding cream or sugar. I also love the atmosphere. It's quiet--when they do play music, it's muted, and they don't seem to mind if people hang out for awhile. They have a good number of tables and very comfortable seating. It's a great place to sip coffee and write or do other high-minded work :)

Ever thought about the coffee that a serious organic chemist would make? How about a molecular gastronomist? An astronaut? I was deeply, deeply impressed by the mad scientist gear behind the counter at this Salem, MA coffee shop. Here they siphon coffee through chem lab equipment and make cold brewing look like it requires a Ph.D. It is really cool to watch and tastes fantastic. Treat yourself to one of the best coffees you'll have all year; the chai is great too.
Detracting from the awesomeness, though, were the prices. A small "regular" coffee was over $3. Small chai latte was over $4. Jaho Coffee Roasters & Tea Merchants actually deserves 5 stars, but with prices like that, I've gotta take away one star. -

Stop! You're about to make a mistake! I know the story - I've been there, too!
It's 1am, you're coming home from the bar. Alone. Again. It sucks. You and I and everyone else - we're looking for the same thing. A lil' warmth, a lil' sugar, something that makes you feel good on the inside. And, well, you know where you can find it.
You can always stop in on the way home and, well, get some. It won't be very good - and, let's face it, it will be quick - but something is better than nothing, right?
Wrong. Do NOT do it.
SKIP THAT DUNKIN DONUTS AND JUST GO HOME.
Once you've been to Jaho's? You ain't ever going back to Dunkin's.
The siphon dripped coffee? The Chocolate Orange Coffee? These things return coffee to how, I like to imagine, they used to be - or maybe send them forward to how they could be...in any event, not the horrible, mass-produced, "big box store" coffees that pollute our world.
I can promise you.
You want some.
Baby, go get some. Thank me later. -

The newer of the two Jaho's (how exactly does one pluralize that word anyway?) is from the décor alone a much fancier location than it's original offering a few steps away. As it should be, because when you walk in and see the siphon coffees you'll know this is serious buisness. You can definately tell that there's a lot of heart and soul built into Jaho fancy and their level of dedication to the quality of beverages is proof enough. Definately go in and see the differences between the menus at both locations because sadly if you're up for bubble tea youre better off going to Jaho classic

i feel like this is the grown-up version of jaho on derby street, even though they're the same place and are like five feet away from each other. it seems a bit more high-class and i felt a bit out of place, but was treated well. it's just that i was kind of sweaty looking and grubbed out, and this place is so pretty. it was me, not jaho. i swear. when i go back and i'm not gross, i'm going to hang out for a long time and look cool and read more than just one chapter in my book.
jaho is the real deal when it comes to hardcore delicious artistic personalized hard-worked master-brewed coffee and tea awesomeness. i feel like they only hire genius baristas with real skill. jaho rules.
the atmosphere in here would be AMAZING after a date at a nice restaurant or something, not that i do that often, HA. my boyfriend and i class it up at cheapo places. but jaho is totally casual-cool and pretty.
tastyface sandwiches! i don't usually get turkey sandwiches when i go out, cause i can do that at home, but theirs is delicious. the turkey is very delicious and flavorful, they toss some nice, crispy bacon in there, and the tomato and lettuce add a ton of fresh flavor to the sandwich. i like run-on-esque sentences. their homemade foccacia is pretty good. that sandwich was a bit pricey at $9.50, but it comes with a bag of cape cod chips and is a very decent size. i'm not mad.

This was my first visit to Jaho's. My boyfriend and I decided to visit Salem after a long day in Boston. What an excellent decision! We walked around a bit and on the way back to the car to drive back to our hotel I saw on their sign that they had bubble tea! So we decided to stop. This place is exactly what we had been searching for in Boston but couldn't find. The tea is excellent and the next time we find ourselves in Salem we will ne sure to stop again. Yelp says they were closed but it's 9:30 now and they ate surprisingly busy!

Reviewing Jaho from the comfort of their leather chair. This is my third time here and it's as good as always. I come here mainly for the siphoned coffee. To my knowledge, this is the only place to get this type of siphoned coffee this side of the states. The coffee is delicious, the staff are courteous and the environment is relaxing. With free WIFI, it's a great place to get some work done. I've yet to try their food offerings, so my rating is solely based on coffee. I hope you folks get the chance to try their siphoned coffee soon!

This is a new location/spin off of the young gentleman that owns Jaho on the "other side " of Pickering wharf. It just opened up at the beginning of February. I went here last saturday night for some coffee with my husband. We were both impressed with the new location (as we still are with the other location). My husband got a mocha and I got a chai tea. There is not as much seating at tables as the other location but there is a bar style seating where they make the coffee which I like. It appears the even ship coffee and tea to people as well. Sandwiches and desserts are available as well. Great atmosphere to chill. Now my husband and I will just have to decide which Jaho we will go to for our saturday night date nights.

I was pleased to hear that Jaho opened its second location in Salem. As soon as I came home from college, I went to explore this new Jaho. I must say, I was very impressed when I stepped in and even more impressed when I tried the coffee. This place is a little more fancy than the Derby Street location, and all of the different machines, like the siphon coffee maker, were really interesting. It definitely provides a unique coffee experience. Only downside is that it might cost you an arm and a leg for a cup of coffee.

I adore this place. Great place to sit, have a coffee and relax. It is a cozy atmosphere and very peaceful. I love their syphon coffee, it's so smooth without any bitterness. It is also fun to watch them brew it right in front of you. They have a HUGE selection of teas and freshly squeezed OJ.

This place is something special. It's so nice inside, and the coffee is very very good. This is a good place to go to just relax, have good coversation with friends, read, work online, etc.
The food products are also very good (from what I have ordered). Last time I went, I got bread pudding, and it was delicious.
If I was going to compare this one to the other Jaho cafe store, I would say that this one has way more of an adult atmosphere... So if all the indie kids that go to the other one annoy you, than this one is probably a better choice. -

A friend told me about siphon coffee and I soon discovered this Jaho did it. Its amusing that there is the first Jaho right around the corner (From across the treet you can see both!) The place is a nice standard cool coffee place with long counter and helpful staff. The selection is mind boggling, and the techniques are much much more advanced than any starbucks. You could just get a drip brewed coffee here, but why not go to Dunkins for that? Of course you pay a bit more for the fancier stuff, but hey this is a special coffee house and you came in expecting special coffee from distant lands you can't pronounce being processed through beakers that look more at home in a science lab and drinking the most amazing (and hot if its siphon) coffee you've ever had.

Review from Amanda L.

The siphon machine at Jaho is one of only TWO in the entire US. It is freaking amazing and it is the BEST coffee I have ever had.
I also really like their Kyoto style iced coffee. It is made in this amazing cold drip machine that takes six hours. The coffee is so smooth. My only complaint is that they need to keep simple syrup out with the sugar and milk now that it is getting warm and iced coffee season - and ask for your iced coffee with only a half cup of ice. -

This is the second Jaho's that is fairly close to the other one. If you are picky (or you are with someone that is) about coffee this is the place to go to. Coffee is more pricey but you get what you pay for. It's the only place that serves Kona in Salem. It's mad scientist perfect coffee. It's a quieter place than the other Jaho's so if you are with someone you want to have an intimate discussion with this would be a good place to go for coffee.

I went in for a coffee, and only got a coffee. The space is very nice, plenty of seating. The coffee was excellent! I very much enjoyed it, BUT it comes at a steep price. $4 for a medium iced coffee is just too much in my opinion, even for a quality product.

There's a wonderful steampunk feel to all the hardware behind the coffee bar that meshes with the comfortable seating, and makes it a wonderful place to sit and talk. When you add to that the real quality of the drinks offered then you've got a real winner on your hands.
