Jaguar in Coconut Grove is a great concept and suffers from a typical Miami problem. Great food, poor service and exorbitant prices. I went with two coworkers to have dinner and drinks. I suppose I should give some background, Jaguar, is a ceviche restaurant. What is ceviche you ask? In its most simple form its nothing more then fish that has been cooked in lime/lemon juice.
We ordered the sample to try the very best they had to offer. Six spoons with one bite of civiche came out each very unique and a masterwork on a spoon. Each offered a different take on the classic offering and was a pleasant meal to be sure. Our server was attentive if not a bit busy. This isn't his fault and he can't be blamed for it but it was noticed. The place was full but not jammed and the décor was a bit scattered. Seating is both inside and outside, we opted for inside, and were greeted by chips and (cheap) salsa very quickly.
The drinks were a bit sweet for me, and under poured. That being the case we ordered 9 of them between 3 people so I suppose it couldn't have been all bad. A few more dishes to pass between all of us, (swordfish kabobs mostly) and a free dessert spoon (nothing impressive) and we were done with our meal.
I picked up the bill for the whole table and we came in at just under $200. I was a bit shocked but hey this is Miami.
Three Stars because the prices are bit high for the product. There isn't really any feeling of getting to know and recommend to guests what that might want to try if this was their first visit. The few gaps in service were noticed but didn't ruin the meal.  Go for something new, and make sure you take someone who knows what their doing, otherwise You'll be disappointed when your order and get a bit of fish with lime juice on a spoon for dinner.

How long has this place been open?

Whenever I drive through The Grove, I've seen this place...But it never occurred to me to actually eat there. Went this past Friday to catch up with an old friend I hadn't seen in over 10 years, and had a great time!

It was crowded, but the nice thing I noticed about the layout at Jaguar is that even though it can get packed, you never feel overwhelmed by the crowd or the noise.

We were promptly seated toward the back of the restaurant, which made it feel like we had our own private area- not too shabby.

I would have given the place 5 stars but their chips 'n salsa are less than mediocre.  They were practically crumbs, and the salsa tasted too much like tomato paste.  But that is my only complaint about it.  It only gets better.

The waitress was great, and I was amazed at how well she remembered each kind of ceviche when she brought out the sampler platter to our table.  Each kind of ceviche was delicious in its own right.  I particularly enjoyed the Oriental  (a blend of fresh tuna, ginger and cilantro), and I think the other was called the Nuevo (shrimp, calamari, and I believe swordfish in a red, mildly spicy sauce).  That's not to say the rest of them weren't as good, but there are certain things that just do it for my palate.

For my main entree I chose the Lomo Saltado.  I've had this a few times before (either at a restaurant or made at home by my uncle), and I'm not exaggerating when I say it is the BEST Lomo Saltado I've ever had.  What is it, you ask? Think along the lines of beef/vegetable stir-fry, Peruvian style.  It is made with onions, tomatoes, and french fries (yes, you read right- french fries).  What made it so much better than the rest I've tried is how UNgreasy it was.  Some restaurants make this dish with way too much oil and it really takes away from the vegetable and beef flavors.  Also, the beef they use here tastes lean, but still manages to melt in your mouth in all its juicy goodness.  It was served with a side of rice, and depending on how hungry you are, you can probably finish it all by yourself.

I can't forget to mention the Blueberry Martini.  It was the drink of the day when I went.  I know, it sounds too sweet, and it might be for some people...But the truth is that I have always had a thing for anything blueberry since I was a child, and the martini was no different.  It was sooooo good.  Dangerous drink!

All in all, great place to grab dinner... I found it to be a little pricer than the "$$" that is listed on here, but it wasn't exorbitant either.  I'd go there again in a heartbeat.

We've been here a bunch of times and it's been all great experiences!  The ceviche is great, as others have said, and the six choice sampler is a great way to try it all.

Both indoor and outside seating are comfortable and nice atmospheres.  They allow dogs outside.  The service has always been good and everything I've tried has been great.  Lunch is well priced and dinner is moderate.

Make sure you try the Dulce de Leche Cheesecake - sooooo good!!

Stick with the ceviche, and maybe the taquitos.

Everything else was bland, greasy, and nearly inedible, save for the pita and blue corn chips with a creamy tomato-y salsa.

While my Tio Kique was upset that the Ceviche Peruano was not, in fact, done in the traditional "Peruano" way, the quality of the dish was not to be disputed. I was more happy with my aunt's order, the
Tiradito Nikei : tuna, ginger, soy, shallots, jalapeños, cilantro, lime,
grape seed oil, cucumber, avocado & sesame seeds. We switched after she had forced me to order the blue corn tacos, which were so heinous that they actually paid my cousin to eat them.

FOOD FAIL.

Honestly, the Tiradito Nikei was so good that I cannot stop fantasizing about it. It is a MUST ORDER!

My favorite ceviche spot! What is ceviche you ask? In essence it is some from of meat cooked in limejuice, typically fish or shrimp. Jaguar does an amazing job creating this little delights of flavor by adding their own style, salsa and spices to it. My favorite is the tuna. If you are new to this food, Jaguar is the perfect place, as they serve you a ceviche sampler with 6 little spoons. This is not just great to sample but really the perfect appetizer. If you know a particular one that you love, leave the wonton style sample spoons and get a large spoon of one variety. Health and fresh.

There is more to Jaguar than just ceviche though. Their mix of Mexican and Peruvian food features dishes like blue tacos, chicken sandwich and Mexican lasagna. All good to try. There is a special brunch served only on the weekend that has even more specialties to enjoy.

I also really like Jaguar because of their setup. The outdoor tables are covered, so you are protected from sun and rain, yet can enjoy the scenery and people watching. The entire front features windows that allow for natural light to enter deep into the restaurant. A long bar to the right and tables to the left, separated by a low wall and bistro style built in tables, are tastefully decorated with Mexican and Peruvian art and sculptures. The color scheme also makes this place feel like you are somewhere in Latin America. Staff is always friendly and attentive.

Give them  a try!

NOM NOM NOM NOM. that's all I seemed to be doing at Jaguar.

Jaguar was a total blessing on a 105 degree day in Coconut Grove. Stopped by here with the BF and were greeted by friendly and attentive waitstaff. Their salsa and chips were outrageously good and perfectly spicy.

I ordered the Peruvian Causa which I had to call home (literally) about after taking the first few bites. I must admit not knowing what causa is and seeing its ingredients on the menu: potato, tuna, cornichon, green beans, baby corn, kalmata olives, onions, and a mint/cilantro chutney made me want it all the more. It was OUTSTANDING.

BF had the churrassco steak sandwich (he's so boring-if there's a steak sandwich, you know he's getting it) but that was incredible as well! The churrassco sauce was perfect as were the assortment of fried starches (yucca, plantain, and potato).

We left full and very happy!

I don't care what anyone says, the ceviche I had was incredible.  It was the most unique style of ceviche I've ever tried.  We shared the Tiradito Nikei...tuna, ginger, soy, shallots, jalepenos, cilantro, lime, grape seed oil, cucumber, avocado, and sesame seeds.  WE WERE HAPPY AS HELL.  Finding the little tunas lost in the sea of deliciousness was so rewarding.  The sauce along with the onions and cilantro was so amazing that you gotta  use their chips to scoop the rest.  3 of us ate three different meals and all were outstanding.

The place reminds me of Rosa Mexicano, but the quality, authenticity, and flavor of the food was all better in my opinion.  Only negative thing was the lack of table side guacamole.  I had the taquitos yucatan (cochinita pibil).  The tacos come in tiny corn tortillas as they should.  The pork was juicy, came with guacamole and a side of pickled onions, and rice/beans.

I tried some of the mexico city taqueria platter and it was a similar deal to the cochinita pibil with the tortillas, but you can delicious latin-tasting steak, a home-run sauce, and onions.  The chilaquiles had some of the best flavor of chilaquiles I've eaten at any restaurant.  My only criticism of the chilaquiles is that I think it would be better if they  boiled the tortillas to a point of al dente softness.  The fried eggs it comes with, the flavor of the crema and sauces, though are pretty much unbeatable.  The service was decent, not spectacular. As far as taste goes, however, I've tried 4 different items off their menu and they were all irrefutably fantastic.  So, I'm willing to bet you're in for a pretty incredible meal if you give this place a try and/or try some of the above dishes that I tried.

Ceviche Nikei, blessed be she or he who brought to life such delectable invention!

Round of 'ritas and ceviche Peruano: a strong, sold "good".

Aaand, pet friendly... a bit too pricey, tho, for under table scraps.

The ceviche sampler is totally fun and delicious - with various types of ceviche (from spicy to savory) served in big white soup spoons. Really cool presentation, really tasty flavors. Take my advice, don't share this with your table. Get one for yourself :)

This is one of the best restaurants I've ever eaten in. The ceviche was the BEST I've ever had. They make an amazing salsa and serve it with really unique chips. Super friendly staff and terrific mojitos as well (best we had on the trip). Highly recommend this place.

Awesome ceviche.  I guess it's not the traditional Peruvian ceviche, but whatever it is, it's awesome.  When I found out that I was moving away from Miami, this was one of my "better eat here while I still can" spots.  The spoon sampler is the way to go.

torn between 3 and 4 stars.

dined at Jaguar during a recent Miami trip for my cousin's 24th birthday. Seeing the ceviche spoon bar in an ad, we were stoked to try it out. The restaurant has a fun and chic environment and service was okay. We ordered a pitcher of Sangria, which was great! The only thing I thought was that the food wasn't up to par with the prices. The food here is pretty expensive, and the food was good, but not great.

We ordered the ceviche sampler, and I must say, they do have a huge ceviche menu. However, I've had better ceviche for a couple of bucks. As for entrees, my cousin and I shared the tuna, and the halibut. Both dishes were presented very nicely - and I loved the way it looked! Also, both dishes were very tasty and had a unique twist to the combinations of food that arrived on your plate.

Another nice touch is the birthday cake that comes with Happy Birthday written on your plate. Nevertheless, I enjoyed my experience here for it's uniqueness, but a tad too pricey to me.

Flew in from northern California on a business trip and staggered into this place absolutely dying from the heat. Ordered the peruano ceviche based on the waiter's reco and it was amazing. The portion seemed generous for my $15, though I can see how six spoonfuls for $12 might seem meager. Had the churrasco and finished with the flan. This being miami and all, i had a nice strong mojito as well.  All in all, a successful business trip meal with food you can't get on the west coast.

Went with my husband on Sat. night.  Ceviche and drink selection was impressive though we had wine.  Our server was fantastic, quick and attentive.  A little slow bringing out the water (which would have been even better with ice!!!) but other than that, food came out quickly as did everything else.  I had the churrasco which was good, I've had better chimichurri.  Had a bite of my husband's "vuelve a la vida" ceviche and it was HOT but delish (and I'm not a ceviche lover!!!)
We had the pudin de pan dessert and that was absolutely fantastic.  It was loud in there, so not recommended for a date, but def. a good place for a good meal and some people watching outside!!

I went here recently for an Easter dinner. The server was very attentive and the Caprihna was good. But the food was just okay. Not blown away. Most of the platters are seafood based. Good if you are there for the ceviche.

Also its in the heart of Cocowalk and a has a beautiful view if you sit outdoors. A type of place you take your parents when in town.

Hubby & I ventured out to the Grove last night specifically to hit up Jaguar Restaurant which is right next to Cocowalk by The Gap.  We were craving some ceviche of which we have tried all offered on their menu, however Vuelve a la Vida is our favorite. They sell ceviche by the spoonful to try or the bowl... we could easily have our own bowl each. We chased our spicy ceviche with some homemade sangria, very light and pleasant after a walk in the summer heat. For entree we shared a Lomo Salteado, a Peruvian specialty that is to die for! It's sauteed beef with onions, peppers, potatoes with a side of delicious rice. We really really wanted the Key Lime Tequila creme brulee for dessert but alas were left with no room in our tummies. I love the atmosphere too and the service is just perfect.

My friends and I were in the middle of Coconut Grove for a conference and looking for a non-chain restaurant to get lunch.  We were pleased when we found Jaguar.

The first thing we noticed was that the service was slow. This was kind of disappointing.

The flat bread chip things plus the salsa were really good.  I ate a ton of those.

My mojito was good.  I don't drink enough of them to be able to judge but all the right components seemed to be there.  Didn't blow my mind though.

I was pretty impressed by the selections of ceviches.  We ordered one as an appetizer.  It was good.  Unfortunately, the app came out 10 seconds before our entrees.

For my entree, I had the seared tuna sandwhich.  I think they over did mine a little bit but regardless it was good.

All in all the food was good.  It was a wee bit expensive.  With cocktail, you're going to spend $30/person easy.

The food was good but nothing to make me seek it out the next time I come.

As it comes to no surprise to my fellow Yelpers, I went to this place last night with lovely Carla- (I think she already wrote a review about this place) She actually chose the appetizers and entrees so I must confess that I did not read their descriptions on the menu until now when I looked it up on line- but their names sounded pretty cool.

This place was recommended to me by several co workers, they allegedly love it - disclaimer .... the recommendation was for happy hour and they have only tried the "spoons" appetizers washed down with a lot of alcohol - I must say, this may cloud your judgement a bit.

The service was outstanding, from the moment we stepped into the place until the time we left.... I wonder, however, if we were not mired in such a financial crisis, would there be so many open tables on a Friday night at such a prime location ?

Anyway back to the food - much to be desired.... they only get some credit are their attempt on presentation - but at the end there is no substance, the tuna salad is nothing more than a scoop of tuna with mayo on top of a bland potato- and the appetizer thing with the spoons is OK but at 15 dollars for 6 spoons ... not worth it at all !! Needless to say, I had a great time because I was in the presence of good company, and the place is well decorated and has a great ambiance so no complaints there -

But I am returning, nor recommending it. For the amount of $$$ we paid I expect a lot more and in this wonderful city there are plenty of places worth their weight in gold.

I had to think LONG and hard to try to decide how many stars this place deserves. PLEASE Yelp give us 1/2 stars, this one only deserves 2 1/2

Lets start from the beginning.. this place had been recommended to us (by people I don't trust with good taste but tried it anyway).  They had been raving about the ceviche, and me being a FOOL for ceviche thought it was time to try it out.

Our server was as sweet as pie, just the nicest guy and very attentive.  We chose the ceviche appetizer with the different flavors, the Tacos Yucatan, I had the Tuna salad Peruvian Style, and Sangria.

The decor was pretty but overdone.  I still don't understand the new trend of plasma TVs in every restaurant.  I work in the Golf world and would rather not stare at the Golf Channel while eating.

They gave us this mixture of chips - pita and blue corn.  The pita were spectacular, and I couldn't stop eating them with the extra hot sauce.  Now I was starving so who knows if it was my tummy talking.

The Sangria was worth skipping.  No buzz whatsoever, but the pineapple was delicious after marinating in it.

The ceviche as promised was spectacular.. ok 2 out of the 6 were - then the others were really good.  I preferred the Peruano and Vuelve a la Vida.. YUM.  Only problem, is that its WAY overpriced for BITES of ceviche.  It comes out to $2 per BITE.  Think about it.

My husbands Tacos Yucatan were delicious, absolutely delicious (I suggested it, and was sorry I hadn't ordered it myself).

My salad.. sigh.. ok this is the description: Albacore tuna with mayo celery and onion (first red flag...  this reeks of regular tuna salad) served over Iceburg lettuce, surrounded with SLICED potato, baby corn and olives, french beans, tomato, hard boiled egg with lemon cilantro vinagrette and Yuca chips.

OK... yes, I should have realized the tuna would be nothing more than canned tuna made into a tuna salad you get at Subway, but for $13 I expected more.  There was no lettuce nor was there sliced potatoes or yuca chips.  It was a scoop of tuna salad on top of COLD tasteless mashed potatoes.  Canned baby corn and tiny portions of the rest of the above mentioned.  Gourmet? Hell no.  By no means.  The vinagrette was a tiny drizzle on top of the tomatoes.  I was so disappointed.  I couldn't believe I walked right into that one. My mistake was seeing the word PERUVIAN and actually believing it wouldn't be just regular tuna salad.. i was hoping for tuna salad with Papas a la Huancaina type dish.  Nothing Peruvian about this.

We skipped dessert, didn't wan't to risk it.

So after looking at what we paid, which was just under $90 and the extreme dissapointment with my food, the decision was made.  We won't return, nor would we recommend it - the salad was so bad we didn't feel it is worth risking trying other things.

Plus on a Friday night you end up paying for parking at the parking garage so tack an extra $9 to that bill.

The ceviche is easily the best I've had.  The staff is consistantly attentive and friendly.  The prices are reasonable.

My only complaint is that their brunch isn't to my taste.  I'm a traditional eggs benney kinda gal and their "unique" brunch choices didn't thrill me.

Overall, I love this place.  I've never had a bad experience and will continue to eat there.

Still don't like it.  I have tried the ceviche and yes it is good, but in Miami you can find many places with good ceviche.  The other food is overpriced although the portions are ok. Don't have the the rice or beans as a side if you can change it - do.  They are bland.

The service is the only good thing about this place.  They can be very nice.

Delicious Sangria, but a little on the weak side.
Whether it was a result of the cool atmosphere, or the cute ceviches that were tasty, or the fact that we polished off a few sangria pitchers before our food arrived... who knows?!
Any way, it was a tasty and fun night with good food. (Although I think I'd also give it 3.5 stars :-)

I've been to Jaguar several times, mostly for lunch or afternoon eats.

The place is a bit overpriced as others have suggested but it has a menu full of delicious options, I can't remember ordering anything I didn't like!

Somethings I feel that other reviewers tend to rate every eatery against a top of the line gourmet NYC restaurant. This isn't one... this is just a place with an interesting Latin fusion menu and stuff that tastes very good.

This would get maybe a 3.5 from me. I don't think it's the best restaurant in Coconut Grove (or everyone in the Grove would seriously be in trouble). I had the ceviche sampler, and out of 7 ceviches, I think I would only be willing to try three flavors again. I am not in the rush to try the others. The sangria, however, was good.

Other than that, it's a nice casual and modern atmosphere (with somewhat loud music), patio seating, and a decent menu listing with emphasis leaning toward Mexican cuisine. Foodwise, though, I probably would want to go somewhere else until I can find more consistent reviews for this place over a particular dish. I'm thinking I should have stick with the steaks but the steaks were a bit pricey compared to what I can get elsewhere for the same cut. I didn't think it was worth it for the price.

Jaguar is a must go if you are a fan of good food. The Ceviche is great, always fresh, the salads are outstanding (Mango Mambo salad...yumm!) and the sangria is fabulous. Some of my other favorites are the tacos and tiraditos.  Their brunch is pretty good since it goes outside the norm. The service tends to be on the slow side, but when you are enjoying the good food, it's not such a big deal. The Thursday night wine tastings are a great time.

I went back recently, and perhaps I was too hard on this place earlier.  Granted, the only reason to go there is for ceviche, but maybe that is reason enough.  The ceviche samplers are great, and I also had a wonderfully-executed desert consisting of crepes filled with banana and other tasty things.  Also, the ambiance and location are both pretty good, so this place is probably in the 3 1/2 to 4 star range.

The food can be good, but is inconsistent.  Don't bother ordering anything other than the ceviche.… Read more »

I had a fantastic dinner here recently when I was nostalgic for real Tex-Mex food, and this place delivered.  The menu consists of ceviches, grilled meats Latin-American style with a choice of different sauces, fish dishes, and a Tex-Mex (I think they call it Mexican) corner.

We stuck with the ceviches, trying a spoonful of each of its 7 kinds.  And we stuck with the Tex-Mex, because that is what we were craving.

Ok, before I continue, we were greated cheerfully by the owner at the hostess stand, and our waiter Marvin was attentive and great.  He could recite the ingredients of everything on the menu without missing a beat, including each of the ceviches.  And he brought a bowl of their homemade tasty mustard-based aji hot sauce on the side when we requested hot sauce.  And also, this is the BEST Tex-Mex dinner fare I've had outside of Texas.  No lie.  It's like a menu I'd find at an upscale Tex-Mex restaurant in Austin.  Except I'm in Florida.

Our favorite ceviches were the more traditional ones.  The Peruvian one ("Peruano") made with corvina, or Chilean sea bass.  The "Vuelva a la Vida", or Mexican/Tex-Mex version famous for its hangover-helping properties down southwest.  And the "Black Market" ceviche, which is the Peruvian one mixed with the aji amarillo (yellow Peruvian pepper sauce).  The only cevice we didn't care for, because we weren't in a Japanese food mood, was the "Oriental" - it was straight up Japanese tuna sunomono.

We ordered two main dishes to share:  the Taquitos Yucatan, which were the typical interior Mexican cochinita pibil pulled pork tacos in a row of 5 small corn tortillas, topped with pickled red onion. This dish is popular on both sides of the border -- but this version was served with freshly-made guacamole on the side, and the pulled pork had a slightly sweet (hints of cinnamon) bbq taste.  However, the guac and the slight sweet bbq flavor of the meat made this dish Tex-Mex, and hence kicked up that nostalgic factor for me.

The Tamale Duo, consisting of 2 huge tamales -- one with shrimp in guajillo & ancho chile adobo sauce, and one with salsa verde pulled chicken.  This was definitely Tex-Mex fusion, and the shrimp one had amazing savory flavors that went well with the slightly sweet corn tamale. The tamale to filling ratio is quite high, and at first I was wishing for more filling...until I tasted the black bean puree that they were swimming in.  The dish turned out to be a complex blend of sweet and savory flavors, and very filling.

Drinks-wise, we tried the passion fruit caiparinhas, which were strong and really good.  Don't order their mojitos though; they use a rum that has mint flavor in it that is reminiscent of toothpaste.

I'll definitely make the drive here again in the future.  I just noticed that they have snapper veracruz, under the name "Snapper Jarocho" in the seafood section of their menu.  Now that's a ubiquitous Mexican dish that you can find at any authentic Tex-Mex seafood restaurant in Houston.

Mmmm.

Although I might be biased, as I got food poisoning here once, I really think that the food tastes soul-less. Fancy chips that are cold, stale and oily. South-american-tasting bland salsa. Probably because I hear people talking about how it is their favorite restaurant ever it makes me like it even less. You get a good overflow of cocwalk customers too, bonus!

The ceviche is ok, but not worth the price.

I had the most fantastic lunch here.

I got the ceviche sampler - they were all very good (pricey though).
White sangria (very yummy)
A salad.

I sat in the sun outside and took my time. Jorge my server was very nice and made suggestions and let me enjoy my time.

Jaguar gave me my ceviche sea legs and it was a great place to get them. The food is outstanding and they have good ceviche happy hours. I highly recommend it. Reservations recommended.

Coconut Grove is a well-known tourist shopping district with a bunch of cute little shops, similar to University Avenue in Palo Alto, or Laguna Beach in Orange County. With some coconut trees, it feels different, but not very different. So, if you really want to go take a look, you may want to consider going there at night.

With street lights turning on and party-people flooding in, the place feels more inviting and lively in the evening

Jaguar - A Cute/Fun Hang-out for Locals

Tim and I decided to do some bar hopping. Hey, since we are on vacation, why not just go crazy. The first stop is at Jaguar, a Latam Grill (yes, that is an abbreviation for 'Latin-American') that offers the comfort level available from neighborhood bars and tastes usually only found in exotic locales. It’s an excellent choice for those tourists who want to try a cute and fun hang-out frequented by the locals.

'Taste and Decide' is the restaurant's motto, and we would be remiss not to take up that offer and ordered colorful ceviches samples. Every spoon offers different type of fish or shrimp with unique and exotic flavor. The spicy shrimp is our favorite. Although Tim thinks the texture of the squid is 'rubbery', I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Jaguar has a really great ceviche selection aside from other delightful menu items (my favorite being the crispy blue corn chicken tacos).  Pair that up with a ceviche spoon sampler and you've had a great lunch or dinner!
The location makes it perfect for a walk around coconut grove before or after eating.  It's very nicely decorated and the service is great.
